Error code Error Code 4201
is a common Windows issue that typically arises from “The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider. [ERROR_WMI_INSTANCE_NOT_FOUND (0x1069)]”.
Overview
This article provides a comprehensive guide to resolving the issue: “The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider. [ERROR_WMI_INSTANCE_NOT_FOUND (0x1069)]”. Known as Error Code 4201, this error can hinder system performance. Here’s how to address it.
Identifying the Problem
Error Code 4201 arises when a WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) data provider fails to identify the provided instance name. It often occurs in scenarios involving remote server management or querying WMI information.
Common Fixes
1. Verify Instance Name
Check if the instance name you’re using is correct. Ensure it matches the actual instance name in the WMI repository.
2. Register WMI Namespace
Sometimes, the WMI namespace associated with the instance may not be registered. To register it:
– Open an elevated Command Prompt.
– Run the command: mofcomp <Namespace>.mof
.
– Replace <Namespace>
with the namespace name.
3. Restart WMI Service
Restarting the WMI service can resolve temporary issues:
– Open an elevated Command Prompt.
– Run the commands:
– net stop winmgmt
– net start winmgmt
4. Reconfigure WMI
Reconfigure WMI to reset its settings:
– Open an elevated Command Prompt.
– Run the command: winmgmt /resetrepository
Advanced Troubleshooting
1. Update WMI Providers
Outdated WMI providers can cause this error. Update them to the latest versions:
– Download the latest providers from the Microsoft website.
– Install the updates and restart the computer.
2. Scan for System Errors
Use Windows System File Checker to scan and repair system files:
– Open an elevated Command Prompt.
– Run the command: sfc /scannow
Conclusion
By following these solutions, you can effectively resolve Error Code 4201. To prevent future occurrences, ensure that WMI configurations are accurate and up-to-date. Additionally, address any potential system errors promptly to maintain system stability.

NOTE: This is to make this a backup of the original Repository folder.
8. Restart the computer back into normal mode to an administrator account.
10. In the elevated command prompt, type net stop winmgmt and press Enter.
NOTE: This is to make certain the wmi service is not running.
11. Wait until successful message appears, and then type winmgmt /resetRepository in the elevated command prompt and press Enter.
12. Wait until the successful message appears and then close the elevated command prompt.
- C:\windows\logs
- C:\windows\system32\logfiles
14. Restart the computer.
15. Test the Event Viewer. It should be working now.
16. If it is working again, then go back and delete the RepositoryOld folder. (See step 7)
17. If it is still not working for you, then do a System Restore using a restore point dated before the problem.
That’s it,

Just wanted to check with you guys. Has anyone gotten an error message for event viewer windows-USB video/Analytic?
Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer.
Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider.
I haven’t changed permissions in WMI to see if it fixes the issue but I wanted to check if others got this issue also.
Thanks

Here is the fix I tested.
If you want to apply this fix:
1) Save a copy of your registry
2) Copy this reg command in a text file and save as Fix for WMI Viewer USB Video Analytic.reg

thank you so much for helping me solve the problem.
The solution you proposed worked wonders.
I would just add that for the registry key «HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ PnpResources\ Registry\HKLM \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels\Microsoft-Windows-USB-Video/Analytic» you must change the permissions, otherwise the change will not you are allowed.
Thanks again.

Does not work. Cannot add that registry to the key.
To which user did you change Ownership of the parent Registry Key?
To which user / user group did you give change Permission for the parent Registry Key?Denis

A more common & effective step would be to set it to Administrators [plural] because that is a User group to which all your Admin accounts belong.
If you change the ownership & permissions then you do not need to use that utility to run as TrustedInstaller.
I cannot advise you about your WMI error, I know nothing about that topic.
I only posted to help you with the Ownership & Permissions changes.
best of luck,
Denis

Don’t bother adding the key. It gets overridden eventually. Besides, that error only appears if the journal is empty and not every time. I don’t bother because it has no impact on the O/S

Error 4201 is an error on windows related to WMI data provider, which is a component of Windows. However people have reported a number of problems which are directly linked to the WMI provider. People have said that they have experienced the following error message:
Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider.
What Causes The Error 4201
Normally these kinds of errors are caused because of the program that it relates to and so below are the main causes of the following error:
- Specific Windows files and settings are damaged or corrupt
- Registry keys cannot be found
- Files have been removed
How To Fix The 4201 Error
Step 1 – Rename The WMI Folder
The “WMI” folder is basically what Windows uses to help load up a number of important pieces of software & data for your system. If you are experiencing the 4201 error, it generally means that the references to this folder are damaged and should be changed. Here’s how to do this:
- Use msconfig to switch to safe mode boot
- Boot to safe mode
- Run cmd.exe as an administrator
- Type “cd C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI”
- Type “rename RtBackup RtBackup2”
- Use msconfig to switch to normal boot mode
- Reboot and find event viewer working
Step 2 – Clean Out The Registry
- Download This Registry Cleaner
One of the big causes of the 4201 errors is through the “registry” database of your computer. This is a large database which stores vital information & settings for your PC, and is used continually to help Windows to read the files, settings & options that it needs to run. Although the registry is one of the most important parts of every Windows system, it’s continually causing a large number of problems thanks to the way it will often become corrupted and unreadable. This is the cause behind many 4201 errors, and needs to be resolved by using a reliable “registry cleaner” application.
This step is best completed by downloading RegAce System Suite, and letting it clean out any of the problems that your system may have inside.
