MP3 players are equipped with a USB port that allows you to connect them to a PC. Usually, when you connect an MP3 player to your computer, Windows will automatically recognize it. But there may be times when your Windows computer may not recognize your player and you see an «Unknown device» message. This FAQ will help you solve this problem.
Reasons MP3 player not showing
Our advice before moving on to other solutions. Sometimes a simple restart of your computer can fix the problem with a failure to read an external USB device.
There may be several reasons why your PC does not see the player. This can happen due to an incorrect (not tight enough) connection of the player to the computer, due to a breakdown of the USB port or the player itself, as well as due to reasons such as low battery power on the computer, hardware incompatibility of devices, and even due to the presence of virus in the player. If you have checked your gadgets and are sure that the cause is not a virus, a broken port or insufficient battery charge, then follow these steps:
How to make your PC recognize your MP3 player?
- To begin, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > Display. Locate the Hidden files and folders section, and check Show hidden files and folders.
- Right-click on the My Computer icon from the desktop, then click Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. Right-click on the line marked Unknown Device, and click Update Driver. In the wizard that prompts you to update the hardware, choose No, not this time.
- Click Next > Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) > Next > Do not search. I will choose the driver to install. Choose from the list of hardware USB hub, then click Next > Disk.
- In the window that opens, click Browse. Then, go to C: /windows/inf, and select usbstor.inf > Open.
- The path of the selected driver will appear in the previous window. Click OK. The driver will be installed, and you will have an option called Device USB Mass Storage.
- Select Storage Volume > Next > Disk > Browse. Go to C: /windows/ inf, and select volsnap.inf > Open. The path of the selected driver will now appear in the previous window. Click OK. The driver will be installed, and you will receive a Generic Volume option.
- If the problem persists, click Start. In the search box, type cmd, and press Enter.
- The Command Prompt will be opened. Enter the following commands:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd\
cd windows\system32
start devmgmt.msc
- Device Manager window will be opened. There, click View > Show hidden devices > +. If you get any greyed entries, right-click on them and select Uninstall.
- After you restart your PC, your MP3 player should be recognized by your computer.

Помните, что впоследствии Вы должны будете выполнить активацию Вашей копии ОС Microsoft Windows, что может потребовать от Вас совершения междугородних звонков и выхода в интернет. Необходимые требования для проведения работы:
На этот раз я привожу Вам набор инструкций по интеграции, используя только свободно доступные утилиты и программы (то есть абсолютно бесплатные), которые Вы можете абсолютно точно найти в сети. Вот — то, что Вам понадобится в ходе дальнейшей работы:
• Установочный диск Windows XP Home или Professional с SP2. Возможно, что оригинальный установочный компакт-диск с XP SP1 тоже будет нормально работать, но я проводил свои работы на XP SP2, имея под рукой обычный retail-диск и диск, полученный по программе volume-лицензирования. (Вы вполне можете попробовать поработать и с OEM-диском от изготовителя Вашего ПК, но 100% гарантии дать не могу, все зависит от того, как была изменена разметка диска и образа.) Нормальный диск или Upgrade CD от Microsoft работают вполне прекрасно. Мною проводилась процедура интеграции на дистрибутивах с обычных одинарных дисков, пользователей Windows Media Center и TabletPC ничем порадовать, но и огорчить не могу.
• Автономный установщик Windows XP Service Pack 3. Этот файл размером в 316Mб теперь доступен с
Вебсайта Microsoft.
• ISO Buster. Этот полезный инструмент восстановления данных может быть загружен абсолютно бесплатно.
• Nero 8 Trial. Это ознакомительная версия, доступная бесплатно, включающая только лишь сам Nero Burning ROM. (Если Вы захотите заплатить за программу, то сможете использовать все прилагающиеся дополнения к ээтому продукту.) Замечу, что возможно использование утилиты ImgBurn вместо Nero 8.
• Другие файлы. Вам могут понадобиться дополнительные файлы после проведения интеграции, они могут прилагаться на компакт-диске или USB с комплектацией Вашего компьютера. Этими файлами могут быть драйвера для Вашего оборудования (особенно обратите внимание на наличие драйверов для сетевых устройств), а также уже скаченные обновления для Вашего ПО, но это еще упомянется в Пункте 6 ниже.
Убедитесь, что Вы загрузили автономный установщик XP SP3, ISOBuster и Nero 8 Trial перед продолжением! Устанавливая Nero, Вам будет предложено установить множество дополнительных модулей, длинный список которых будет представлен в открывшемся диалоговом окне. Помните, только Nero Burning ROM, третий в списке, нам требуется (см.рисунок).

Вставьте установочный диск с Windows XP в привод вашего ПК и закройте все появившиеся окна автозапуска. В Моем компьютере (или просто Компьютере), кликните правой кнопкой по значку привода и из контекстного меню выберите пункт «Откурыть». Оставьте окно открытым, чтобы видеть содержимое компакт-диска.
Вновь откройте Мой компьютер. На сей раз, перейдите в корневой каталог вашего жесткого диска (C:\), Вы можете выбрать по своему усмотрению и любое другое местоположение, куда бы хотели временно поместить файлы с компакт диска, которые Вы в конечном счете объедините с SP3. Создайте папку, например xp (C:\xp). Затем создайте вторую папку, например sp3 (C:\sp3).
Теперь, переместите ВСЁ содержимое установочного компакт-диска Windows XP в папку C:\xp.
Пункт 2: Распакуйте содержимое установочного файла XP SP3 на Ваш жесткий диск
Теперь Вам потребуется извлечь файлы из установщика SP3. Пока копируются файлы с компакт-диска на жесткий диск, копируем автономный установщик Windows XP SP3 (стандартное название windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe для англ. языка) в директорию C:\sp3. Нам потребуется командная строка (для Windows XP нажимаем Пуск-Выполнить, в появившемся диалоговом окне набираем «cmd», ав Windows Vista достаточно открыть меню Пуск и набрать cmd в строке Поиска).
После этого, используя нижеприведенные команды, переходим в директорию C:\sp3 и извлекаем установочные файлы туда (Отметьте, что надпись [ENTER], означает нажатие клавиши ENTER):
cd \ [ENTER]
cd sp3 [ENTER]
windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe -x:c:\sp3 [ENTER]
Появится диалоговое окно процесса извлечения файлов из архива, которое покажет ход извлечения.
Когда процесс распаковки завершится, вы увидите соответствующее окно. Нажмите ОК для продолжения.
Внутри директории C:\sp3 Вы увидите новую папку i386, которая содержит только что извлеченные файлы.

Problem Windows XP 32bit sp3 on windows 10 pro
Hello everyone, it’s the first time I’ve written on the forum, but I have used your advice in case of need.
But now I have a problem of which I have not found an open discussion.
My problem is related to virtual machines running Windows XP 32bit sp3. Virtual Box is installed on Windows 10 pro.
Last week I found myself having to make changes to a very old machine, where the software to make them run on XP, so I came back to use a virtual machine created 4/5 years ago, where I’ve never had problems, but now I noticed particular slowness, both during start up and during its operation. this slowness slowed me a lot the communication with the equipment and often I fell communication losing information and changes.
After several tests done by increasing the RAM of the virtual machine, defragmenting the virtual disk, updating virtual box, reinstalling Virtual box, I recovered the old notebook with windows 7 pro, I noticed that with the old version of virtual box I have no problem.
I would like to test, by performing a virtual box downgrade that I currently have installed on windows 10 pro, from version 5.2.12r 122591 to version 5.0, is this possible?

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click and «Show Log» in the GUI, save «VBox.log» (no other file) to a zip, and attach the zip here.

I see you are using VirtualBox 5.2.0, which is by definition the buggiest release in the 5.2.x series.
I would bring the software up to date (5.2.12 at time of writing). You should also update the Guest Additions, which are still on the 4.x branch, so very old.
Finally I would increase graphics RAM in the VM to 128MB, since the host has plenty of RAM. You should have been getting warnings in the VM settings dialog about the VRAM being too low (16MB).
Then let’s see where that takes us.

One parting question: what is drive F on your host? If that’s an external drive then naturally the VM is slow, though you could speed it up by killing off disk management tasks in the XP guest, e.g. disk indexing.

Thanks for the advice, but I have to apologize because I sent the wrong log file.
Two weeks ago I had to recreate the virtual machine because it did not start up anymore, so I recreated it by connecting it to the .vdi file of the previous one.
In the meantime, I also answer about the tests you asked me to do and I just did, I increased the video memory to 128MB, but nothing has changed, the machine is still slow at startup, I also see it from scrolling of the windows startup bar that often crashes, and as the XP startup logo appears and disappears on the screen. I do not know how to describe what happens.
On the contrary, on the old PC this does not happen, everything flows freely and without problems.
I do not understand how the guest 4.0 can have, when I install the new version of VirtualBox it also installs the relative guests. Do I need to start the installation for each individual virtual machine created previously?

The guest (being virtual) does not use physical host graphics RAM, so the latter question is moot.
I see that the new log still shows the guest using 4.1.8 Guest Additions.
I see you increased allocated cores from 1 to 2. In fact if XP is already installed then it won’t recognize that this happened, unless it was originally installed with a multi-cpu kernel. However VirtualBox still has the overhead of context switching an additional core, so this most likely slowed things down some more.
If you open a task manager inside the guest you can check whether it shows you a performance profile for one core or two. Also your host only has two cores, so this means that the guest can slow down the host and vice versa.
Finally: CPU time is like energy. It gets converted into work, it can’t just disappear. So look at the task manager in the guest and the host and see who the CPU or I/O hogs are. But do bear in mind that any CPU or I/O hogging process running inside the guest (e.g. indexing, windows update) will present on the host as a VirtualBox process being the hog.

Ok, I put the processors back to 1 because entering the task manager is as you said, I see only one processor, I had taken to 2 to run a test.
Having a little bit of fear in updating the guest additions, I created a copy of the virtual machine, I installed the new guest additions but it did not fit anything, it’s always slow.

Sorry for the delay but for a series of inconveniences at work I had to get away from the problem, which still did not solve, I checked the CPU HUG, but I do not find anything abnormal, if not different executions of svchost.exe.

In these days I still have to use two other old virtual machines with XP and all have the same problem, ie slow start and even once started are slow. I’m sure that time ago with the old Notebool HP with windows 7 pro I had no problems

I agree that 96% system idle means there is no CPU hog. Something could still be hogging I/O however. If you right click on the columns headings of that dialog you should be presented with a menu that allows you to select the columns which should appear — most are hidden by default. I enable CPU Usage, I/O Reads and I/O Writes. In evaluating I/O hogs, look for processes whose I/O figures are much larger than others, and especially when the number is continually incrementing.
Then Google for information on the processes which are the worst offenders. Typically for XP they’ll turn out to be related to Windows Update. Disk indexing can be disabled. I also see a lot of non-standard processes in the list, e.g. Modbus related.
Ultimately, if there is no extra CPU use and no extra I/O use then by definition the OS is running well and you should look to your own perceptions to evaluate why you believe it runs slowly!

Nothing really stands out, but the intention was for you to watch the general behaviour — is the I/O count on one process continually incrementing? I can’t really tell that for you from one screenshot or any other reasonable number.
Looking again at the original log I see that the VM reaches the stage of having loaded the GAs only 21 seconds after boot. It looks like you started interacting after 36 seconds. Those seem like quite respectable times to me, especially for a single core VM whose VDI is located on a secondary drive. Why do you call it slow?
Incidentally, the following link discussed how to change the XP kernel from single CPU compatible to multicpu. It’s quite easy if you take your time and read the instructions, but do remember to back up the VM before trying it. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24823&start=15#p111502.

You can also force install them and it will work fine, I’ll get around to patching the drivers some time. I’ve been meaning to since august

I don’t see a ‘drive’, I see «Dell Streak 7» under «My Computer», I open it up and see two drives.

Old thread but it helps me a lot!
Did the same with a lumia windows phone, which did not appear in my old and messy windows XP.
I wrote the hardware ID of the phone in the «wpmtp.inf» and finally the driver was installed.
The phone comes up as camera … but I can move the files (photos music etc) with windows explorer, that’s all I wanted.

I’d like to just post this reply so others with android phones who are possibly having my issue can find this. I did an OS update on my Droid Razr M (verizon) last night and when I got to work today I plugged in my phone and got a device driver error «MTP Device» It was like it was trying to install the device and couldn’t find the driver for it. Would just end with «error — your device did not install correctly». I searched forums for hours and un-installed/re-installed Motorola Device Manager twice, aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Why the F*** did Moto/Google not make these phones just show up like a mass storage device, it’s unbelievable how much frustration and wasted time they have caused so many people over such a simple issue.
Anyways. If you go to device manager and find your «MTP Device» which will be in the «other devices» section. You can go to the properties and get the parameter you need for your particular device: VID_xxxxxx&PID_xxxxxxxxMI_00
It’s weird how it show up as a parameter in device manager but if you click it and use ctrl+v you can copy it.
Strip off the stuff after MI_00 and replace the correct info in the two lines you will add per kalibulax’s advice.
After saving, restart and plug your device in and wallah!!! My computer sit thinking for like 2 min when installing the driver then finally it asked me if I would like to continue installing driver that was not microsoft cetified, bla bla bla. I clicked «continue anyway» and it worked perfect as before» The only thing I can see that changed form last week to this week is the update to android on my phone. I don’t know what it was, but the current version as reported by my phone is Android version: 4.4.2
I hope this can help someone who is having my same problem and just wants to transfer their files like the used to )

uav, к сожалению, установка на Windows XP SP3 всех библиотек Microsoft Visual C++ (2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 и даже 2015-2019) мне не помогла. VLC Media Player v3.0.21 (2024 года выпуска), скачанный с его официального сайта https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html, по-прежнему не запускается на Windows XP SP3 и выдает ошибку «Точка входа в процедуру wcscat_s не найдена в библиотеке DLL msvcrt.dll».
Где скачать сторонний патч для VLC Media Player v3.0.21, который возвращает поддержку Windows XP SP3?

EgorKuzevanov, я же дал ссылку (с официального сайта) на ночную сборку 3.0.21, где это исправили, чем она Вас не устраивает? Разработчики в курсе бага и уже его исправили, просто официальный релиз ещё не вышел.

Попробуйте установить Classic Media Player, это можно сказать то же самое что и VLC Media Player. Я видел Classic Media Player версию под Windows XP.

Либо подмените файлы (EXE-шник, например) уже после распаковки портативной (возможно, понадобится и какие-то DLL-ки перенести), либо используйте прямо с той страницы, что по моей ссылке, там в ZIP лежит как раз портативная:

Если вы имеете в виду Media Player Classic, который входит в состав K-Lite Codec Pack, то у последней версии под Windows XP есть проблема с внутренними библиотеками, которые иногда (в случайный момент) рушат воспроизведение файлов в стандартном Windows Media Player. Решается ручной заменой dll-файлов с более свежей сборки.
Также некоторые видео выдают ошибку о точке входа, но работают. Поэтому я пользуюсь VLC 2.2.8 (хоть он мне и не очень нравится). Версию 3.X.X не использую — она у меня почему-то криво работает с визуальными эффектами меню. Видимо, это как-то связано в видеокартой. Версия 2.2.8 меня полностью устраивает.
