После загрузки диска Windows XP в CD/DVD привод, начинается запуск установщика и загрузка драйверов, необходимых для взаимодействия с аппаратным обеспечением компьютера.
На этом же этапе предлагается воспользоваться восстановлением системы из образа (F2), а так же загрузить драйвер дискового контроллера (F6) в случае, если последний появился позже версии дистрибутива операционной системы. (Примечание: на новые компьютеры Windows XP можно поставить только при переводе контроллера в режим эмуляции IDE)
После этого этапа появляется экран на котором предлагают начать установку Windows, запустить консоль восстановления или отменить установку.
Нажимаем Enter для перехода к следующему шагу, на котором нам необходимо принять лицензионное соглашение. Внимательно прочитав его и согласившись с условиями нажимаем F8 и система предлагает нам разметить жёсткий диск.
Мы не будем создавать разделы, а позволим системе использовать всё доступное пространство. После этого диск необходимо отформатировать. При форматировании нового жёсткого диска рекомендуется выбрать обычный режим при котором форматируется всё свободное пространство.
После форматирования система начинает копировать файлы на жёсткий диск. Эта процедура занимает от 5 до 15 минут в зависимости от скорости диска. Иногда на этом этапе бывают сбои – при использовании пиратских сборок или некачественных дисков могут быть нечитаемые файлы. В таком случае система предложит заменить носитель или повторить считывание диска. Именно поэтому рекомендуется ставить лицензионную систему, или если по каким-то причинам Вам нужна пиратская, то ставить её надо с оригинального образа Microsoft скачанного с MSDN.
Затем завершающий этап и перезагрузка.
Теперь мы уже видим привычный экран загрузки компьютера с логотипом Windows и бегущей полосой. До установки пакетов обновлений, на этом экране так же присутствовало название операционной системы и цвет бегущей полоски был разным для домашней (зелёный), профессиональной (голубой) и версии для встраиваемых систем ( жёлтый).
Установка переключается в графический режим, в котором рассказывается об основных нововведениях системы во время выполнения операций установки. Эта текстовая демонстрация пришла ещё с первой версии Windows 95, где демонстрировались преимущества последней версии. Так же тут предлагается выбрать настройки языка и региона в котором будет использоваться Windows, настройки клавиатуры. Большей части пользователей достаточно будет нажать Далее, я же привёл снимки экранов детальной настройки для общего ознакомления.
После этого вводятся данные владельца — Имя и Организация и разумеется самое важное — ключ продукта.
Затем даём компьютеру имя, которое будет персонализировать его в сети и вводим пароль администратора. Надеюсь правила составления пароля все знают — буквы разных регистров, цифры и знаки. Если не ввести пароль администратора, то любой человек имеющий доступ к вашему компьютеру сможет войти в учётную запись администратора и делать с вашим компьютером всё, что захочет.
После этого проверяем дату и время, которые берутся из BIOS компьютера и корректируем часовой пояс.
И снова любуемся рассказами о возможностях системы. Правда спустя несколько секунд вас попросят ввести настройки сети. Если вы не извращаетесь с сетями, то просто нажимаете далее, даёте имя рабочей группы и установка продолжается.
В итоге можно сказать, что установка Windows XP содержит много этапов, которые могут запутать неподготовленного пользователя компьютера, к тому же на протяжении всего цикла установки пользователь должен находиться рядом с компьютером.
Замечательной возможностью установщика Windows является файл ответов, с помощью которого можно полностью автоматизировать процесс установки. Файл создаётся в блокноте и не требует изменений в самом установщике.
Ещё одна перезагрузка и переходим к экрану OOBE который многие из вас не видели, т.к. в пиратских сборках его отключают.
И так, нас приветствуют и предлагают продолжить. Интерфейс выполнен в стиле Luna который будет сопровождать вас всё время пользования Windows XP. Необходимо согласиться на автоматическое обновление системы, настроить подключение к интернету и зарегистрироваться в Microsoft для получения новостей и бесплатной поддержки.
Наконец мы создаём учётную запись для основного пользователя компьютера. Для остальных пользователей записи лучше создавать из самой операционной системы, т.к. там можно будет создать пользователей с ограниченными правами.
После этого загружается рабочий стол с известной фотографией местности Сонома в Калифорнии сделаной фотографом Чарльзом О’Риром.
Первое, что делается после установки системы — проверка обновлений и установка недостающих драйверов. К счастью всё это делается несколькими щелчками мыши. В обновлениях находятся исправления ошибок операционной системы, новые версии некоторых программ, а так же альтернатива стандартным программам Windows — набор Windows Live Essentials. Сначала рассмотрим систему без новых версий программ, но после установки обновлений безопасности.
1) Обновление до Microsoft Update. В новой версии расширен список продуктов для которых предлагаются обновления. Первоначально устанавливаются 2 обязательных обновления — средство проверки подлинности Windows и обновление установщика Windows.
2) Вот и список обновлений. Число впечатляет. 99 высокоприоритетных обновлений, 12 дополнительных. Для дальнейшего обзора устанавливаем только исправления безопасности, обновление списка перехода на летнее время, обновления сертификатов, средство проверки подлинности, патч отключения автозапуска, silverlight и средство удаления вирусов. Итого 103 обновления на 109,5 мегабайта. Установка займёт продолжительное время, так что лучше в это время заняться чем-то другим.
После установки обновлений видим стандартный рабочий стол. Из ярлыков присутствует только корзина. Все остальные доступны через меню Пуск.
Стандартные программы включают: Браузер Internet Explorer 6, программу для рисования Paint, 11 игр, почтовый клиент Outlook Express, IM-клиент Windows Messenger, программу для редактирования видео Windows Movie Maker, проигрыватель Windows Media 9, программу для удалённого доступа к компьютеру, удалённый помощник, программу для звукозаписи, терминал HyperTerminal, 3 мастера настройки сети, программу для архивации, программу восстановления системы, дефрагментатор диска, программу очистки диска, программу переноса файлов и настроек со старого компьютера, планировщик заданий (для системы), программу для сбора данных о системе, центр безопасности, редактор текстов WordPad, блокнот, калькулятор, проводник.
Онлайновые сервисы почты убили клиенты электронной почты, но надо признать, что Outlook имеет весьма удобный интерфейс. Причём за счёт огромных кнопок он удобен и для сенсорных экранов. WordPad представляет базовые возможности редактирования текстов. Windows Media Player 9 умеет воспроизводить музыку и видео, потоковое аудио и видео, записывать музыку на диски и копировать музыку с дисков. Имеется поддержка обложек, интернет-магазина музыки, есть каталог интернет-радио. Калькулятор имеет 2 режима — обычный и инженерный. Так же есть средство для отправки и принятия факсов.
Все настройки проводятся через Панель Управления которая имеет 2 режима: классический и вид по категориям.
Имеется стандартная подборка обоев, несколько хранителей экранов. В стандартной комплектации доступно 3 варианта раскраски Windows: синий, зелёный, серебристый.
Для любителей классики есть классическая тема оформления, впервые появившаяся в Windows 95 Desktop Update Pack.
Теперь установим всё что предлагает Microsoft в бесплатном обновлении с Windows Update и дополнительные темы с сайта Microsoft. Пакет включает 11 обновлений на 155 мегабайт. В него входит .Net Framework 1.1, проигрыватель Windows Media 11, браузер Internet Explorer 8, .Net Framework 3.5, Windows Live Essentials и антивирус Security Essentials на 155,4 мегабайта. Дополнительно установим две бесплатные темы которые так же предлагает Microsoft. Первая Royal — входит в состав Windows XP Media Center, вторая — Zune созданная для поддержки рекламы плееров Zune. К этому добавим пакет Windows XP Fun Pack включающий в себя несколько новых скринсейверов, обновление окна переключения задач и программу для тонкой настройки системы.
После установки система выглядит так.
Программа просмотра изображений заменяется галереей Windows Live которая добавляет возможность каталогизации фотографий, сортировке по дате, по людям на снимке, по тегам и папкам. Так же присутствует возможность редактирования изображений с возможностью отката к оригинальному изображению. Outlook Express заменяется почтой Windows Live, которая предлагает возможности фильтрации спама, защиты от фишинга, улучшенный интерфейс, встроенный календарь, папку контактов.
Так же появляется функция семейного контроля, программа для ведения блога (по признанию многих блоггеров — самая лучшая). Windows Messenger заменяется на Windows Live Messenger.
Новый Windows Media Player 11 предлагает улучшенное качество воспроизведения видео, удобный интерфейс, функцию мгновенного поиска и множество мелких улучшений. Антивирус Security Essentials интегрируется с браузером для увеличения безопасности работы в интернете.
PowerShell — новое средство управления в виде командной строки с поддержкой сценариев. Расширяет возможности управления Windows.
Поиск Windows 4.0 — позволяет мгновенно находить файлы на диске компьютера благодаря индексации.
Интерфейс администрирования Windows представляет возможность просмотра системных событий, управления дисками, есть список оборудования подключенного к компьютеру. Есть монитор производительности.
На этом стандартные возможности Windows XP заканчиваются и дальнейшее расширение возможностей можно с помощью отдельных программ.
Подведём некоторые итоги:

Windows XP Theme Installer
Overview
This PyGObject-based GUI program automates the installation process of the xfce-winxp-tc theme on Linux systems. It simplifies the installation steps that currently require manual compilation and package installation.
Current Progress
The current UI of the PyGObject program is simple and user-friendly. It recreates the Windows XP OOBE. You can click a button to install the winxp-xfce-tc theme.

- The installation functionality has been added, but it is currently only available for Debian-based systems. Support for other distributions is planned for future releases.
- Rozniak has started working on porting my work on the theme installer over to C for integration with his theme. This work is still in progress, and the C-based version is not yet complete. The goal is to enhance the theme installer to be more closely integrated with the theme itself.

There is a LightDM greeter in xfce-winxp-tc that implements both the Welcome screen and Classic logon functionalities. This greeter is located under /base/logonui. In future updates, the installer might include this LightDM greeter as an option, allowing users to enable or disable the Welcome screen and Classic logon during the installation process.
By implementing these enhancements, I aim to provide a more versatile and user-friendly tool that meets the diverse needs of users.

The Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), also known as First-Time Setup, is a setup wizard present in various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux (along with its derivatives). It typically launches proceeding the installation or reset of an OS, guiding users through account creation, locale selection, and other initial settings.

Microsoft Windows[edit | edit source]
In Windows NT-based systems, the files for the «Microsoft Out-of-box experience» are located in the oobe directory in %WinDir%\System32, with the main file being msoobe.exe.
Predecessors[edit | edit source]
Before a real out-of-box experience existed, Windows 3.1 included a tutorial program, which shows how to use the mouse and could be launched during setup.
A similar introducing program is included in Windows NT 3.x, which shows the user what Windows NT is and how to use it. Unlike the tutorial in Windows 3.1, however, it needs to be started from the Program Manager after setup.
After first-booting into Windows 95, a simple welcome program (WELCOME.EXE) starts, which includes tips for using Windows 95 and links to Help topics for new and existing Windows 3.1 users, as well as an option to register to Microsoft. After a second start, there is an option to no longer launch the Welcome program after boot. A similar program is also included in Windows NT 4.0. While it was slightly redesigned and continued to exist in Windows 98 pre-releases, it no longer launches in Windows NT 5.0 Beta 1 builds and returned in Beta 2, albeit completely redesigned. Also a significant interface overhaul received the application in the Beta 2 of Windows 98, where it first played a sample video before playing a sample track. It includes links to the Registration and the Tune-up Wizard, as well as a tour, showing the new features of Windows 98.
In Beta 2 and 3 builds, there is also a link to the Beta Guide. The Begin button goes through the list, while in the second edition, it changed to a Close button, which simply exits the application.
In Windows Me, it is full-screen and now plays a video showing new features of Windows Me. Then, it turns into an interactive program with more details to these features.
The Welcome program was replaced by the Windows XP Tour in said OS.
Windows 98 and Me[edit | edit source]
The Out-of-box experience was introduced in Windows 98 SE. However, it does not start at first boot since the OOBE was intended to be customized by OEMs which can set the start of the OOBE at first boot.
In Windows Me, the Microsoft Agent character Merlin was introduced. OEMs also had the ability to use their own Microsoft Agent character instead or modify the text spoken by the assistant. One example for the former is HP’s Agent character Victor. Merlin also appeared as an Office Assistant in Office 2000, 2001, XP, 2003, v.X and 2004 as well as being a Search Companion in Windows XP.
Windows 2000[edit | edit source]
Windows 2000 introduced the «Network Identification Wizard», where the user account is being created. It launches after clean installs starting with build 2072. On upgrades from Windows 9x instead, the user is prompted to set a password for each account, which is the case since build 1796. On upgrades from Windows NT 3.5x and Windows NT 4.0, the user is prompted neither due to the user information being transferred from those earlier builds, which is only partially the case for Windows 9x. It no longer launches after clean installs starting with Windows XP build 2276.
Windows XP (Whistler) and Server 2003[edit | edit source]
The Out-of-box experience was ported to NT-based Windows beginning with Windows XP build 2223. In this build, it has Windows Me branding due to being copied from a Windows Me Beta 3 build without any modification. It also does not close after the final page (it just loops back to start), so its process (msoobe.exe) must be terminated to exit. The OOBE starts after an upgrade starting with build 2257. Merlin was ported with build 2250, albeit being absent in the next builds until build 2410. Also with this build, Windows Product Activation has been implemented into msoobe.exe and can be invoked with the /a switch. However, it was non-functional until build 2428.
The OOBE was overhauled with a Luna-esque design in Windows XP build 2416. Also beginning with this build, it starts after a clean install. Merlin was replaced with the Microsoft Agent character «Question Mark» in build 2469. The music played during OOBE, title.wma, was composed by Stan LePard[1] and first appears in build 2481. It previously appeared in Internet Explorer Starter Kit, and is known as «Windows Welcome music» within the metadata and as «Velkommen» on LePard’s SoundCloud.
In Windows Server 2003, the OOBE is non-functional and is only used for Product Activation. Attempts to launch OOBE with msoobe.exe /f lead to a black screen until the process has been killed. Despite the OOBE not being functional, the previous music was replaced with «No Hay Problema» by Pink Martini in build 3615.
Windows Vista (Longhorn) and Windows 7[edit | edit source]
Due to being forked from a Windows Server 2003 pre-release, the OOBE in Milestone 3 plays «No Hay Problema» in the background and has not changed much from its inclusion in Windows XP.
With the introduction of WIM-based Setup in Windows Longhorn build 4001 the OOBE received a major refresh. It no longer features background music as well as MS Agent characters and was branded as Windows Setup. Beginning with Milestone 5, the OOBE no longer starts at first boot. This has been changed with the development reset, where it returned to its Windows XP design, but the «Question Mark» character is absent, and it returned to playing «No Hay Problema».
After the Omega-13 branch, the OOBE was again absent until build 5259, where it gained a huge redesign. Also, it launched directly after setup and before the last restart. This has been changed with RC1, where it launched after the restart. The final page contains an orb with the Windows logo. Clicking on it or the Start button located in the bottom right of the window leads the user to the login screen. Such page was removed with Windows 7, where it directly leads the user to the login screen after it finalizes the settings. Windows 7 also introduced the new HomeGroup page in OOBE when the user set up their network location as home.
Windows 8 and 8.1[edit | edit source]
Early Windows 8 builds had two versions of OOBE: a nearly unchanged design of Windows 7 and a new one based on the Metro interface behind Redpill. In Milestone 3, the wallpaper of the old OOBE has been corrupted, but this would not be fixed by Microsoft.
The new Metro OOBE firstly was a full screen version of the old OOBE. This changed rapidly, as later builds introduced a color background as well as customization options. The background was at the beginning a gradient blue with flower patterns in the corners of the screen. These were removed later and in the Developer Preview, the color has become solid and the default is purple, later green. After 8155, it added more colors and change default color to teal.
The Developer Preview added the option to create a Windows Live ID (now known as Microsoft Account). Build 8155 added more colors and changed Windows live ID to Microsoft Account, The Consumer Preview added few more customization options into OOBE and switched back to blue as default color. With the Release Preview, the Express Settings have been introduced to speed up OOBE along with adding more colors. The RTM changed the default color back to purple.
Windows 8.1 keeps purple as the default background color, but has a different color picker. Other than that, not much has been changed.
Windows 10, 10X and 11[edit | edit source]
The OOBE has not gained many new features, although the background color was changed to blue and can no longer be customized. This design is still included in LTSC releases of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 or later.
With Windows 10 Creators Update, OOBE gained huge changes: Express settings have been removed in response to criticism of the operating system’s data collection; the user must set up privacy settings manually,[2] and Cortana has made its debut in OOBE.
Windows 10X introduced a new design for OOBE, which is based on the Fluent Design System. After the cancellation of Windows 10X, it merged into Windows 11 with some modifications.
For the Home and SE SKUs of Windows 11, the OOBE requires an Internet connection and a Microsoft account to continue the setup. This requirement is not applied to most of non-Home SKUs, including Pro (up until build 22543), Education and Enterprise. Starting with build 22557, however, it has been applied to the Pro SKU as well. This requirement can be bypassed by the following methods:
- (For Pro SKU only) Select «Set up for work or school» on the «How would you like to set up this device?» screen. On the «Let’s set things up for your work or school» screen, select «Sign in options», and then «Domain join instead».
- Press ⇧ Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt, and execute the following command:
oobe\bypassnro. Removed in builds 26120.3653, 26200.5516 and 27842. - Press ⇧ Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt, and execute the following command to show the Windows 10-style OOBE for local account creation:
ms-cxh:localonly - Use an answer file on top of a Windows installation image to perform an unattended setup.
- Sign in with a locked Microsoft account such as
no@thankyou.comand any password. When the message “Oops, something went wrong” appears, select Next. No longer works as of 3 June 2024.[3]
In build 22567, a new page has been added to the OOBE for linking Android phones to the device.

Before getting into OOBE, the system will play some Mac OS-relating clips until the user begins to interact with the system.
Mac OS X Server 1.x and Rhapsody[edit | edit source]
Apple Rhapsody Developer Release 2 introduced the «Rhapsody Setup Assistant», which is an OOBE-like experience where the OS can be configured. When the Setup Assistant is complete, it will restart the system. After the release of Mac OS X Server 1.0 (which only supports PowerPC), its name was shortened to simply «Setup Assistant». It was ported to Mac OS X Developer Preview 2.
Mac OS X[edit | edit source]
Setup Assistant gained an Aqua redesign in Mac OS X Developer Preview 3 and a massive overhaul in the Mac OS X Public Beta.
The Setup Assistant was replaced with a full-screen OOBE. Mac OS X Cheetah, Puma and Jaguar played a short video clip before entering the OOBE, which shows water dropping to promote their new Aqua interface. The latter introduced the ability to register or sign in for a .Mac subscription.
A new clip is used in Mac OS X Panther, and the OOBE now goes completely full-screen on low-resolution displays.
A remake of the clip is used in Mac OS X Tiger. It bears a slightly lighter background as well as some more OOBE-related changes.
Mac OS X Leopard uses a completely new intro clip and changes the appearance of the OOBE, which is now windowed. Also, this version introduced the ability to sign in for a Educonnect subscription, since it succeeded the former .Mac service. Not much has been changed in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Mac OS X Lion removed the intro clip.
OS X Yosemite redesigned the OOBE to match with its new design language.
macOS Catalina introduced an option to toggle Light/Dark mode and Screen Time.
macOS Big Sur updated the OOBE design and adds a blurred background to the OOBE.

There are also some Linux distributions which come with an OOBE. OOBE is usually in distros which use the Anaconda installer from Red Hat, meaning that it is used by distros from the surroundings of Red Hat and Fedora. Later versions of GNOME 3 also have a post-install utility.

I downloaded Windows XP x64 from an MSDN mirror (all hashes checked out). I noticed that after installation, it just goes straight to the desktop as the Administrator account instead of an OOBE. Is this supposed to happen?

Pretty sure the skipping is intentional considering both its base OS and target market.
One thing worth pointing out is that the OOBE is enabled in early Longhorn builds and most used the otherwise-unused title.wma from Server 2003, a couple of them reused XP’s for whatever reason though.
Longhorn was however pitched as a mainstream release, XP x64 was not and was intended for enthusiasts and hobbyists so they probably just couldn’t be arsed basically.

I have solved it in XP2ESD v1.6.1. Now Windows XP SP2 x64 images created by XP2ESD have same OOBE as x86 XP.
