Windows XP build 2465 (idx01) is a post-Beta 2 build of Windows XP, which was released to testers on 26 April 2001[1] and later scene leaked on 22 June 2001.
Release information[2][edit | edit source]
Interim Build 2465 is available for download We are pleased to announce availability of Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP interim build 2465 for electronic download. This is an interim build following Beta 2. You are not required to download or install this build as a part of the Whistler beta test. Interim builds are provided on an as-is basis for hardware and software developers, and for those beta testers that are interested in interim build updates. Microsoft has recently announced that the official product name for Whistler will be Windows XP. However the code name "Whistler" is still present in many places in the product. Please do not file bugs on these issues yet. This build will NOT be made generally available on CD. FEEDBACK ON INTERIM BUILDS We are not looking for detailed feedback on this build (e.g. bug reports). Although there are some improvements, there are not a lot of significant Beta 2 changes. You should report regressions from Beta 2, and you are welcome to see if bugs in some areas have been addressed. Other than that, please report only critical issues at this time, as we are still focused primarily on beta 2 feedback. PRODUCT KEYS Microsoft Windows Whistler requires a product key to complete installation. Each Technical Beta ID will be issued a unique product key for their use in testing Windows Whistler. If you have not yet gotten your assigned product key, log on to http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/support/key.asp. The product key previously issued to you should be used to install this build. Your product key can be used to install all editions of Whistler (e.g. Personal, Professional, Server, and Advanced Server). This product key is assigned to you and should be used by you only (or only your designated representatives if you are a corporate site). Your product key is a representation of your Technical Beta privileges. You may lose your Technical Beta privileges if your product key is published on an Internet site or otherwise becomes publicly available. WINDOWS PRODUCT ACTIVATION You have up to 14 days from installation to activate Windows. The prior registry key to disable activation no longer works. Activation can be accomplished via two different connection methods: Internet and telephone. Customer service centers supporting telephone activations for other countries are now available. You may install Whistler on as many PCs as your End User License Agreement (EULA) allows. Please see your EULA and the supplemental EULA posted here and on the web site for exact details. For beta, the grace period by which you must activate is set to 14 days. For RTM, it will be 30 days as previously stated. Please use the ".beta.whistler.product-activation" newsgroup to post any problems or technical questions pertaining to product activation. INTERIM BUILD This is an interim build we are releasing for ongoing development efforts. Microsoft does not recommend that you install this build. This is an "external test release interim build" provided primarily for hardware and software developers to use in lab test environments to verify recent code fixes and application and device compatibility. If your connection to the Internet is such that you can download a build of this size, you are welcome to download, install and report any critical problems to us as soon as possible. However, this release is interim developmental code between standard release milestones. As such, much work is in-progress and many features may not be fully functional. In addition, this release has not been fully tested to the same level as a full external beta release This build may not be as stable or reliable as a beta milestone release. It may contain fixes and improvements in some areas while it may have new problems in other areas. You are welcome to install and try this build at your own risk, recognizing these limitations. This build may in fact work better in some cases for a limited set of beta users. We are only releasing the client SKUs at this time (personal, professional and professional checked versions). Server SKUs may be available in future interim releases but will not be made available for 2465. If you install this build, please complete an install survey. (http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/Survey/Install_Survey.asp) WHAT IS NEW IN THIS BUILD? To avoid going too deeply into the details of the build process, very few areas of build have changed since Beta 2. Most of the changes that have been made were prepared and cued up before Beta 2 even shipped. As a result the changes do not contain many changes based on specific feedback from Beta 2. The areas that have changed are: - User Interface - Audio drivers - Print drivers - COM + - Help and Support - Some server components - IE, OE and Windows Media Player

New features and changes[edit | edit source]
Out-of-box experience[edit | edit source]
The pre-OOBE display settings popup was updated to have its options reduced to just an «OK» confirmation dialog, with the never ask again checkmark being removed along with it.
User interface[edit | edit source]
Look and feel[edit | edit source]
The Luna theme has been updated to feature a near final design. This design removes the shine on the start button, makes the titlebar color lighter when maximized and changes the tab header style to what would be later seen in the final release. The theme itself has also been renamed from «Whistler» to «Windows XP».
Bliss is now set as the default wallpaper, replacing the previous Red moon desert wallpaper.
Windows XP branding has been introduced. It can be seen in winver
, on the watermark and in a few other areas, removing most references to Windows 2000 and Whistler. The Home Edition SKU now also starts to reference the «Home Edition» branding, replacing the previous placeholder «Personal» branding.
The ShellAboutW
dialog (used in winver and the various inbuilt apps) has changed the copyright notice to use the copyright symbol character (©) instead of (C)
.
Icon set[edit | edit source]
Most icons (like the Internet Explorer, Control Panel or Recycle Bin icons) were updated to their RTM counterpart.
Wallpapers and user account pictures[edit | edit source]
New wallpapers and user account pictures were added, which would be later included in the final release. The wallpapers include: Autumn, Ascent, Crystal, Friend, Home, Peace, Power, Purple flower, Radiance, Ripple, Stone henge, Tulips, Wind and Windows XP, while the user account pictures include beach, car, chess, dirt bike, dog, drip, duck, frog, guest, horses, kick, lift off, palm tree, red flower and skater. All of these user account pictures (with the exception of car and frog), were first used in MSN Explorer 6.0.
Login screen[edit | edit source]
Clouds on the login screen were replaced with a spotlight and the Windows logo was moved from the top right corner to the left side of the user account selection, with the logo itself now only visible when logged out. Additionally, the «welcome» text is now only shown when logging into Windows, with text underneath being removed.
Start menu and Quick Launch[edit | edit source]
More Programs has been renamed to All Programs. The «Log off» and «Turn off computer» options have also had their first letters capitalized.
Outlook Express and MSN Explorer were removed from the Quick Launch toolbar.
Notifications and Desktop[edit | edit source]
- Balloon tips now contain a close button on their top right corner. The «Run in compatibility mode» and Release notes icons were also removed from the Desktop.
- While its features still remain intact, all references to Active Desktop have been removed. The Active Desktop Gallery, for example, is now referred in the New Desktop Item wizard (formerly New Active Desktop Item) to as the Microsoft Desktop Gallery.
Shutdown or log off dialogs[edit | edit source]
The shutdown or log off dialogs now fade the background instead of having a block-like effect.
Shutdown screen[edit | edit source]
The shadows on the Windows XP logo on the «shutting down» screen have now been added.
Control Panel[edit | edit source]
New Internet Options were added, now allowing the use of third-party browser extensions and disallowing the use of visual styles on web pages. The Gaming Options applet was also renamed to Game Controllers.
System[edit | edit source]
In the Performance Options sub-applet, the two buttons for appearance and performance optimizaion in the Visual Effects tab have been replaced by radio buttons, alongside with the introduction of a feature which allows the system to set the settings in the most optimal way for the computer. If a checkbox in the list is being toggled manually, the radio button selection will automatically switch to Custom. In the Advanced tab, all three sections have additional text which explain the default settings predefined by the system and how virtual memory is being used.
Some rewordings have been done in the Startup and Recovery sub-applet, like the term boot being replaced with start(up) instead.
Refinements have been made to Error Reporting as well, such as Windows Components now being classified as programs as well, they can still be excluded from reporting in the Choose Programs section.
Music and movies[edit | edit source]
Windows Media Player has been updated to include a new modern look, with the default sample music being changed to «Like Humans Do» by David Byrne. The legacy MIDI files located in the %windir%\Media
directory were also removed and replaced with flourish.mid
, onestop.mid
and town.mid
.
Windows Movie Maker has had its built-in tour removed.
Help and Support[edit | edit source]
The background of the Help and Support Center is now light blue, with the topbar now being dark blue. The home page has also had the secondary header separated into two individual headers.
Windows XP Tour[edit | edit source]
The Windows XP Tour has been massively overhauled and now behaves like the one found in the final release.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
- The Outlook Express 6 splash screen was updated to match the Luna theme.
- Windows Installer has been updated to version 2.0.
- DirectX has been updated to version 8.1.
- Smart tags suppport for Microsoft Internet Explorer now appears as an installed application, though the feature itself will not show up in the web browser until build 2485.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
Broken OOBE[edit | edit source]
The OOBE is not functional in this build on a clean installation. As such, to bypass it, the user must kill the msoobe.exe
process or select «Cancel» on the display resolution dialog beforehand. The OOBE may work after an upgrade, but usually only if the preceding build has the missing OOBE components.

Windows XP 2465
Author: Blue Horizon
(PNG)
The final Beta 2 build. Microsoft has rebranded the operating system to «Windows XP». With that being said, we got a lot of ground to cover and over 20 screenshots to look at.
(PNG)
Upon first boot, the OOBE is completlely broken. The only way to get out of this is to press Shift+F10, then in the command prompt, type «taskmgr», and end «msoobe.exe». By doing this, a name won’t be set for you.
(PNG)
The first time you see the Windows XP branding. You can see they removed the clouds from the logon screen and the Whistler logo on the top right is gone.
(PNG)
Lots of things here to comment on:
- The shortcut to the readme notes is gone.
- The «File a bug report» icon is updated and it looks just like the «Run in Compatibility Mode» icon.
- «Bliss» is now the deafult desktop background, and there’s other new backgrounds as well.
- Recycle Bin doesn’t have handles on the icon anymore!
- The Luna theme is now called «Windows XP». (big shock there)
There’s also no final XP sounds at this point. The taskbar also has quick launch by default and is unlocked still.
(PNG)
The start menu looks just like it should in the final version. «More Programs» has also been renamed to «All Programs», and my name is Administrator cause the OOBE didn’t work.
(PNG)
Balloon tips now have an «X» you can click to quickly close them. I guess Microsoft workers got tired of getting those without an easy way to stop them.
The activation dialog is still the same as in previous builds. They also removed the old Windows flag icon with just an empty white window icon.
(PNG)
And there’s the activation balloon, this time with an «X» and an updated error icon. All icons such as «Red X circle», «Yellow ! triangle», «White i and ? speech bubble» have been changed to their final look.
(PNG)
And of course, I got to show you the new logon screen.
(PNG)
Windows Media Player got updated again with a new deafult look. Like so many media players back then and today it has to reinvent it’s own UI buttons and controls.
(PNG)
Windows Movie Maker is now also slightly updated. The built-in tour is removed, and it’s not a fully capable YTP machine yet.
(PNG)
The Outlook Express 6 banner is updated and matches with the Luna theme.
(PNG)
The screen saver is way different from the final. I think it actually looks better this way.
(PNG)
There is one wallpaper that is no where to be seen in the final version. It’s this early Windows XP wallpaper that later got replaced by another one with blue or green colors depending on the edition of XP you bought.
And here’s the full image as well.
(PNG)
A brand new tour! It actually has different music than the final and the tour isn’t automatic, so you need to click on everything manually.
This tour will be provided for download at the end of this review.
(PNG)
Help and Support Center has been given a new look. And looks like what it should in the final.
(PNG)
Crashed applications is now handled differently, this has already been in Whistler for a long while, but I just came across this while trying to use search.
And look, they aren’t sorry for any inconvenience! At least not right now, or ever.
(PNG)
The system tray now has a «<» arrow so you can see your least used icons there.
(PNG)
The classic start menu still has some old Whistler icons, but the logo banner on the side has «xp» in tiny red letters. I personally like that more than the final.
(PNG)
The logoff prompt now makes the background fade to black & white instead of dimming the screen via tiny appearing boxes from the top left to bottom right.
(PNG)
Finally, shutting down. Stand-by is still called «Hibernate» at this point, and the background turns black & white here as well.
Phew, that was a lot to showoff and document! In conclusion, Microsoft are doing a nice job merging the home consumer versions of Windows with the business ones. And there’s still more stuff to come.
And just like I said, here’s a copy of the beta Tour below.

History of development
Microsoft Net formerly known as NGWS. The most important change is to provide products as services, and launch a variety of centralized hosting (Hosted) versions and services for direct browser access. Products are expected to be launched after 2002, but its product architecture It is still based on Windows.
Although the chairman of Microsoft claims that this will be another milestone after the company has switched from DOS to Windows, compared with the current software manufacturers have turned software to the concept of service, and successively launched the Web that can be read by the browser. At the same time, when ASP (Application Service Provider) vendors also sprung up, Microsoft did not have any innovative actions in this move, and the situation of conforming to the trend is greater than starting a new game.
Market version
Before the official release of Windows XP, Whistler had Beta 1 and Beta 2 versions. They have been delivered to tens of thousands of testers around the world for testing. In October 2000, Whistler Beta 1 was released; on February 5, 2001, Microsoft officially changed Whistler’s name to Windows XP, and launched its Beta 2 (Chinese version version number is 2462) on March 25, 2001. On November 9, 2001, the Windows XP RTM version officially flowed to the market, and two versions, «Professional» and «Home Editon» were released, which replaced all previous beta versions of Whistler. The development code name of Windows Server 2003 is Windows Whistler Server. The development code name of Windows XP is Whistler.
Windows Whistler is still available for download on the BetaArchive, OSCollect, betaworld and WinWorldPC websites.

From Windows Wallpaper Wiki
Whistler is the codename of Windows XP. This page lists images from both before and after Whistler was renamed, for the sake of convenience, but does not list final image sets. Note that this wiki will refer to Whistler as the codename alone rather than «Windows Whistler», due to that phrasing not being used by Microsoft.
Wallpapers
Build 2416 and earlier
Until build 2416, Whistler did not feature many new wallpapers. All of its wallpapers were reused from Windows 2000, due to it being fairly early in development. By build 2210, the branding wallpaper was replaced with the one from Windows Me, but is still file named Windows 2000.jpg
. However, build 2264 introduced a new wallpaper titled Watercolor, although it was not set as default until build 2410; every build of Windows in general has a picture as the default wallpaper from this point onwards.
Builds 2419 to 2463
While build 2264 introduced the Watercolor wallpaper (default in builds 2410 to 2419), build 2419 introduced a small selection of the wallpapers that would feature in the final release of XP, while removing all of Windows 2000’s wallpapers. Build 2423 changed the default wallpaper to Red moon desert, which would remain as default until build 2465. Testers allegedly compared Red moon desert’s appearance to buttocks,[1] although it was more likely that the wallpaper was set as a decoy and that Bliss was intended as the default wallpaper from the beginning.
The installation of Lab06 build 2415 shown at CES 2001 shows Bliss set as the wallpaper, possibly as the default.

Build 2465 onwards
Build 2465 introduced all of the wallpapers that appear in the final release of XP. Bliss became the new default wallpaper. It also introduced a branding wallpaper, featuring a blue-white radial gradient background with the XP logo in the center. Unlike the rest. it’s at 1024×768 as opposed to 800×600. Starting with build 2485, the branding wallpaper was replaced with one featuring a CGI Windows logo. Between this build and 2532, it was set as the default wallpaper; however, builds 2535 onwards revert it back to Bliss. This could imply that Microsoft had second thoughts about using Bliss as the default wallpaper.
A similar wallpaper is featured in a screenshot of build 2446 by Paul Thurrott.[2] This one features a smaller logo with a transparent skewed “xp” in the center behind the logo, while the radial gradient is in the center left and the background is overall darker compared to the wallpaper introduced in build 2465. However, this wallpaper is not known to actually appear in any build, making it most likely that it was a promotional wallpaper Microsoft provided Thurrott themselves, although the file has surfaced, meaning it was either publically available or it leaked.
Another version of this wallpaper, with the same gradient as Thurrott’s screenshot but with the logo being a similar size to the wallpaper in builds, is shown in screenshots on Microsoft’s website[3] and showcased at an event on February 28, 2001 at the Westin Seattle hotel (where the 2001 Nisqually earthquake interrupted the event),[4] and the Windows XP Expert Zone event.[5]

Sample pictures
Five sample pictures at 480×336 were added in build 2474, with Orange canyon (which was at 336×480 instead) being replaced with Sail in build 2481. With the exception of Winter forest (renamed to Winter), none of these were included in builds 2486 onwards, where sample pictures are at 800×600 instead.
All of the sample pictures here (except Sail, which was introduced later) appear on the Plus! My Pictures screensaver graphic shown in Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP’s launcher. Additionally a dog picture is shown, which is currently not known to have appeared in any builds. No information regarding the original image has been found, although it was likely licensed from Corbis like the rest here.

User account pictures
Build 2419 introduced a small selection of user account pictures, compared to the final release. At this point, none of them are licensed from PhotoDisc; ones with known origins are licensed from Corbis, making it likely the unknown ones came from there too.
