Hi OneSerendipity, and rest of team.
Here are your menu bitmaps back.
I did not change anything on the black bitmaps,
except for moving the white part up higher to match original.
As the skin file has the main, jump, and search bitmap masks just sitting there doing nothing,
I did however turn them back into red masks. Mild, not strong.
I took the alpha layer of your bitmaps, made negative, and turned to red.
The reason I did was in Win 10, I have to put opacity to 0 to get to look like Vista.
Problem is, all the glass color is stripped away at that level. This puts some color back in menu.
It can be easily shut off anyway, for other operating systems.
The search background bitmaps had to be modified to get the box skinny looking.
Search box
If it really bothers you about the search box ends not coming to the ends,
another way is burn it into the main, jump, and search bitmaps.
Glass Buttons
Be great if you get the original glass buttons.
Still the ones I made aren’t that bad. Just need to darken 2 pixels in each corner.
The black spot on shutdown button.
Ended up putting on top line, so English «shutdown» language, and its underline are hidden.
Other languages like German will have the underline in a different place.
Hope Ivo gives us more info on turning off the text?
All the settings I gave already as well as these updated ones, help to make it look more like Vista.
I have no issues with it on my Win 10 system. Thanks
Hope I didn’t miss anything.
One more thing. Even though it’s not pure Vista, it would still be nice to make a Vista skin with a regular shutdown button,
for people who might get confused by the function. I’m sure a11ryanc and others would be happy.

Post by Luximoz on Aug 4, 2024 14:16:53 GMT -8So, over the last few days, I’ve made a fork of the Windows Vista Start menu made by OneSerendipity on the Classic Shell forums, which aims to replicate the default start menu (not the classic one you could get on Vista by right-clicking the start button and choosing the classic start menu, but the default one in classic style that you can get by just disabling themes/choosing a classic theme).
As you can see in the screenshots, it is color-scheme responsive, it follows your menu color, as well as your message box font, and your selected item color. However right now, as you can see, I have 2/3 major issues with the skin file at the moment: I have no idea how to make the search button’s image bigger: Because this default Open Shell search button icon is 16×16, while the actual Vista Classic icon is around 22×22 while having a different, more detailed design: Also, as you can see, there’s a horizontal divider between the power buttons and the action shortcuts that’s missing on Classic Shell. |

Post by Luximoz on Nov 16, 2024 8:07:25 GMT -8Here’s the skin file for those who want it, I’ve been asked to release this, so here you go, just be aware that the few inaccuracies I had already pointed out are still there. |
XP-Vista-Themes
The purpose of doing this is to gather resources here for customizing Windows 10/11 to make it easily accessible for those who want to customize Windows. although, it may be aimed more at old Windows themes like 2000, XP, Vista, etc.
THE FILES AREN’T OWNED BY ME EXCEPT THE .THEME FILES. THIS IS JUST TO PACK ALL OF THEM TOGETHER SO I DON’T AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO FIND THEM AGAIN.
These themes are for Retrobar (https://github.com/dremin/RetroBar), and Open Shell (https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/). I also use ExplorerPatcher (https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher), Windows XP shutdown screen remake, and, Winaero Tweaker (https://winaerotweaker.com/). they make it seem more like XP. It was only tested on Windows 11. not sure if it works on Windows 10 or below.
also, please let me know if it works on Windows 10 or below. this is packed with Themes, Wallpaper, and open-shell skins. when you put on the theme, you need to add wallpaper.
I found these wallpapers and open shell skins from websites. I might make a tutorial on how to make Windows 11 look like XP.
I packed them together. please know there may be some issues in Windows 11 like turning the Aero Lite theme will give you a sort of light theme bar on File Explorer.
there are plenty of wallpapers.
I added cursors from Windows XP on the VM. it has more cursors.
(Also, I lost all my paragraphs. so I had to retype. I had no internet.)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Windows Theme files for Windows 11. you need to throw them into the Theme folder. To do that so to do Win key + R then type in %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
then drag the theme files in there and the Windows theme customization tool from Windows settings should show your themes. also, you would have to add the wallpapers, which I’m including.
for the open shell skin go to C:\Program Files\Open-Shell\Skins then drag the skins into the folder. YOU NEED TO throw in the 2 two folders which are named «XML Menu Settings» and «Extra icon images if need to include them in the second column».
but these folders probably do nothing, possibly.
https://weedtrek.ca/XPshutdown.html (the download page)
https://weedtrek.ca This is down as well.
https://www.tenforums.com/customization/172843-windows-xp-shutdown-logoff-menus-modern-windows.html (forum website and it’s not down)
(anyways, the zip file is called XP_shutdown)
okay, a little quick note, you might need Winaero tweaker for basicthemer2 and change the window’s border in Winaero tweaker to match the basic theme’s original size which is:
Border width: 1
Border padding: 4
then apply changes
for the Windows Vista basic theme title bar size value should be 20 but keep it at 22 if you want Windows 7 and up original size.
UPDATE 1: added a file that fixes the Windows Vista start menu shutdown button’s size. I believe it is the file named «StartMenuL10N.ini», that might be it BUT once you do replace the file with this file in the open shell directory, I think some start menu themes would be broken. you might be able to do the windows vista theme yourself, make sure you use basicthemer2 as it gives the windows vista/7 theme. (https://github.com/Ingan121/BasicThemer2) I also decided to add in Windows XP Shutdown and Logoff menus for modern Windows, I did this because the 2 websites are down, and here is a forum of his post:
UPDATE 2: Added Windows Vista start menu. use StartMenuL10N.ini with the start menu so it’ll fix the button
UPDATE 3: I think this will be useful so here: https://drive.usercontent.google.com/download?id=1LWlkJbwnGp-FVywSeQcXob_sbqaI7ies&export=download&confirm=t&uuid=4dc64e9c-6b15-4319-aaa5-b17372a86221
I found this somewhere on the internet and it’s meant for Windows 11. This is just the download link from google drive. there is some useful stuff like changing the icons and micaforeveryone which lets you get translucent windows. this will just be here for easy access since it is somewhere in a forum.
here’s a youtube video I found about transforming windows 10 to windows vista: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_IEQpvvZ8g
Classic Shell includes one of the most popular Start menu replacements for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 along with a bunch of unique customization options for Explorer and Taskbar. When we cover various tips and tricks related to Classic Shell, our readers often ask us about good looking Start menu skins. Today, I would like to share a collection of excellent skins for Classic Shell to style your Start menu.
To install a skin, copy the .skin or .skin7 file to C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\Skins. Then open Classic Start Menu Settings and go to the «Start Menu Style» tab. Switch to the appropriate style (Windows 7 style for *.skin7 or Classic with two columns/Classic for *.skin). After picking the style, click the «Select skin…» blue link which will take you to the Skin tab. Pick the skin you just copied from the dropdown and adjust the skin options as required.
Here are the skins we liked.
Windows Longhorn Hillel Demo
The first skin is Windows Longhorn Hillel Demo Start Menu:
This is a retrophase skin which repeats the appearance of pre-release versions of Windows Longhorn. This operating system was never released and superseded by Windows Vista. However, its unique appearance and wonderful look still impress many people.
You can grab this skin here: [Skin7] Windows Longhorn Hillel Demo Start Menu
Plex Replay
Like the previous skin, Plex Replay uses ideas from Windows Longhorn. Plex was the default skin of Longhorn for many builds. The skin makes the Start menu look exactly it was in Longhorn.
This skins exists in boths variants.
Plex Replay for classic/classic two columns menu:
Plex Replay for the Windows 7 style menu:
Visit the link here to get the taskbar texture. Your desktop can look like this:
Royale
Our next skin is a set of excellently reproduced Windows XP Start menus. Windows XP users might be familiar with the popular Royale skins and its Noir, Zune and Embedded variants. The «Royale» skin pack brings them back to modern Windows versions where Classic Shell runs:
You can get it here: Windows XP Royale Skin.
Start8 Skin
The next skin is specially designed to fit the flat appearance of modern Windows versions like Windows 8 and Windows 10. It is simple and beautiful. It was inspired by Start8’s look:
Get it here: Start8 Skin V2.5
Gray Classic
The skin Gray Classic is designed for the Windows 7 menu style of Classic Shell. It provides a dark skin which Windows 10 users with dark mode or high contrast mode will like. Definitely good work:
Get it here: Gray Classic
WIN7LIKE
The skin WIN7LIKE is designed to be used with Windows 7 menu style of Classis Shell. It will look best on Windows versions which have glass, that is, Windows 7 and Windows 10. For Windows 10, it will look better if transparency for the taskbar and Start menu is turned on from the Settings app. This skin reproduces the exact look of Windows 7 Aero Glass Start menu. It is recommended to all Windows 7 fans who switched to Windows 10 but miss the classic menu’s appearance:

clrSharp1 2 3
This skin can be used with Classic and Windows 7 menu styles of Classic Shell. It looks clean and nice. Initially created for the Clearscreen Sharp visual style/theme on Windows 7, it can be used in any Windows version without the mentioned theme.
If you like it, read in detail about this skin here: clrSharp1 2 3
Vista Start menu
This is an excellent replica of the genuine Windows Vista Start menu.

Tenified
This flat and modern skin in dark colors will fit the appearance of Windows 10.
The author recommends adjusting Classic Shell settings as follows:
- Enable menu glass: On
- Override glass color: On
- Menu glass color: 0A0A0A, although 000000 works nicely as well
- Glass opacity: 40
You can get it here: Tenified
Two Tone
Yet another flat skin designed for Windows 10. It reminds me of the resizable Start menu we saw in early builds of Windows 10 which was replaced with the Modern/Universal Start menu which shipped eventually. Looks great:
You can get it here: Two Tone
This is our first look at some of the best looking skins for Classic Shell. If you like them, we will follow up with more skins. What is your favorite skin? Tell us in the comments.
