Setup[edit | edit source]

• The setup application found in the root of the installation media features a new icon.

• The page of setup before the restart has been redesigned to resemble the RTM. Most notably the «Restart now» button no longer has the arrow icon from pre-reset Longhorn, but it does not work in this build. The user will need to wait until setup restarts automatically.
• During the first boot, the message «Please wait while Windows prepares to start…» has been changed to add «for the first time…» at the end. This would persist to the RTM and would be changed again in Service Pack 1.
• A stage has been added to setup, which performs a Windows Experience Index check upon first boot. Unlike later builds, it is performed before the OOBE.
• Added some new messages when logging into a user account for the first time such as «Preparing your desktop».

User Interface[edit | edit source]

• This build includes the Windows Aero cursors, but they wouldn’t be enabled by default until build 5469.
• The startup sound now also plays during the orb animation. In this build, it will play a second time at login.
• After connecting to a network, a balloon tip will notify the user that the network has been set to public. The user should click on it to reconfigure the network as private.
• Game Explorer tiles, which were first introduced in build 5219, have been removed.
• If a UAC popup appears, the system plays the «Critical Error» sound.

Themes[edit | edit source]

• The Windows Basic theme now utilizes thicker window frames for most window dialogs (such as the OOBE), making the window metrics more closely resemble those of the RTM.
• The Windows Aero theme colors now have a much more lighter shade, making them resemble the colors seen in the final release.

Applications[edit | edit source]

• Windows DVD Maker no longer quits if a blank DVD is not inserted.^[1]
• The Sidebar Gadget Gallery has been redesigned.
• Windows Defender uses a new background gradient.
• Windows Journal received new icons.
• Windows Media Center no longer directly opens the Setup wizard. Instead, the user can select between Express and Custom options.
• A new media only mode has been added to Windows Media Center. It allows the user to use the system for Windows Media Center only until exiting the mode.
• The ability to filter for Word for Windows files (.DOC) has been removed from the Open File dialog of WordPad after respective support for such files has been removed previously by build 5355.

• Windows Update has been integrated with Windows Ultimate Extras.^[1]
• Network Center has been revamped and is now called «Network and Sharing Center».^[1]
• Scanners and Cameras now has an option to scan for profiles.
• Several icons have been updated:

  • Icons for AutoPlay, Default Programs, the Hardware and Sound category, and Printers have been updated slightly.

The warning and information dialogs which appear during the drive format process have the text strings displaced; they appear below the line with the respective warning or information icon.

Logging off, as well as shutting down and restarting the computer does not work in media only mode.

Applying the Windows Aero theme may cause the system to hang. Pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination, logging off, and then logging back in will bypass this problem.

Microsoft has just released a new build of Windows Vista for technical beta testers. Windows Vista Build 5456 offers many security, functionality, and performance advantages over the previous build (Beta 2 – build 5384.4). Vista Build 5456 is quite a large leap number-wise, and according to Microsoft, in features and performance as well.

Some of the new features include a revamped Aero/DWM subsystem, and a completely overhauled and siginficantly less obtrusive UAP for all those that couldn’t stand the previous one. From what we have been told by Microsoft, the Time Zone bug that plagued all most all previous builds of Windows Vista has been fixed and works great now, and quite a few fixes in the Regional Settings and IME are now implemented. And for the first time since Windows 3.0 Microsoft has finally announced that new mouse cursors will be made available for Windows – something they promised to do in XP with “Watercolors” but failed to deliver for internal reasons!

Continuing the standards of 5365, both x86 and x64 are only distributed in FRE staged formats for optimal install-times and performance ratings.

These ISOs contain Windows Vista Ultimate, Home Basic, Home Premium, and Business Editions. The Product Key for Ultimate Edition is the one for 5342 and above, the rest use their respective Beta 2 keys (information courtesty of Microsoft Corporation).

NeoSmart Technologies recommends downloading from either the Dublin (Europe) or Redmond (United States) severs regardless of location; the Singapore (Asia) server seems to be experiencing bottle-necks and isn’t fast – and may even result in data corruption as previous occurences have demonstrated.

Microsoft has also made available German, Japanese, and for the first time, Arabic localized builds of Windows Vista available. This marks quite an interesting turn of events, normally Arabic is one of the last languages to be ported to Windows, and is the buggiest of IMEs. However, at NST we have realized that Arabic support in Windows Vista is far-improved over that in previous versions of Windows.

This build is only being made available to technical beta testers (members of the Vista & IE7 program on Connect.com) and TAP members. MSDN and CPP members will not have access to this build (though it installs and activates with their existing product keys from Beta 2).

Завтра я улетаю. И как же мне повезло, что до отъезда я могу протестировать самую свеженькую и, признаюсь, интересную сборку Windows Vista. Сейчас я готов прыгать от радости просто по одной причине – хоть что-то новое! Действительно, это дежа вю, этот день сурка, преследующий нас на протяжении трех сборок, закончился. 5365 – 5381 – 5384. И теперь 5456 – сборка по нынешним меркам просто преисполненная различнейшими нововведениями. Неужели, неужели наконец-то мне вновь представился случай написать полноценный качественный обзор? Вместо тех небольших заметок, преследующих нас ранее. Первая сборка поколения Release Candidate 1, новая сотня билдов, нововведения. Все это здесь, перед нами, в наших руках! Все еще не верите и сомневаетесь? Вот наше традиционное доказательство, где все еще стоит Beta 2, несмотря на то, что сборка из поколения RC.

Что ж, пора начинать обозревать новую сборку. План обзора уже составляет 17 пунктов – значит, обзор будет не слишком маленьким. Но, вероятно, уже никогда не будет таких «гигантов», как CTP релизы (5231, 5270). По-крайней мере до Vienna.

Установка, как всегда
Начинается все, как всегда, с DVD диска, вставляемого дрожащей рукой в ПК, и красивой заставки Windows Vista. В последней произошли изменения – теперь вы можете проверить совместимость вашего ПК с Windows Vista (что открывает веб-страницу загрузки небезызвестного нам Upgrade Advisor).

Еще один аспект, заслуживающий внимания – иконка диска. Диск в Моем компьютере, то есть основной файл (setup.exe) и иконка привода становятся логотипом Windows Vista.

Сама установка, принимающая ключ Beta 2 на ура, несколько странная. В самом начале она просто пропустила пункт копирования файлов Windows, и приступила сразу к следующему. В итоге система установилась за 20 минут – рекордное время. Не сравнить с 45 минутами у Beta 2 (что 5381, что 5384).

Сама установка теперь поддерживает обновление с Beta 2, но, ходят слухи, лучше с этим не сталкиваться – ошибок не оберешься. Поэтому была чистая установка с бута на чистый раздел.

Думаю уже не стоит говорить, что бут-скрин остался прежним, что в загрузчике ничего не изменилось и т.д. Хочется поскорее перейти к самому интересному – самой ОС.

Видимые изменения и «фичи»
Что же видят очи после запуска 5456? Теперь перед входом в Vista нас встречает действительно гигантская лампочка Windows Vista (любители Restorator, дружно готовимся смотреть внутрь authui.dll) – в несколько раз больше предыдущей!

Далее обновленный логон-скрин. Теперь там красуется надпись Windows Vista Ultimate, да и общее оформление как-то изменилось. Анимация по-прежнему не работает.

Внешних изменений не так много, но они временами радуют, а временами наносят удар в спину. Во-первых, обновилась прозрачность. Не знаю что произошло, но текстура явно другая, более прозрачная; больше нет той молочной завесы. На фоне ярких границ окон, оставшихся прежними, прозрачность выглядит удручающе.

Изменений в настройке прозрачности не произошло почти никаких. Можно лишь упомянуть о предупреждении в разделе персонолизации – прозрачность снижает быстродействие системы.

В Sidebar произошло 2 изменения. Первое — вы теперь не можете скрыть его двойным щелчком по иконке в трее – для этого вам нужно щелкнуть по нему правой кнопкой и выбрать «Hide Sidebar». А вот восстанавливается он все еще щелчками. Второе изменение – новое оформление окна добавления гаджетов. Оно больше не полностью прозрачное, а лишь частично; основная заливка теперь белая, и немного (чуть-чуть) прозрачная. Выглядит более профессионально.

Оопс, совсем забыл – отсутствуют некоторые гаджеты. Нет пазлов и моего любимого яйца таймера. А жаль.

А вот Flip3D почти радует. Во-первых, его иконка вернулась на панель быстрого запуска. Кстати, эта иконка включает комбинацию именно WIN+CTRL+TAB, которая включает режим Flip3D на постоянной основе, в отличие от WIN+TAB, работающего только до тех пор, пока нажаты клавиши. Во-вторых, как будто наконец-то графика улучшилась, эффект расчески куда меньше – но все еще не идеально.

Произошло повсеместное обновление иконок. Иначе не назвать. Иконок новых очень много, они повсюду. Совсем повсюду. Некоторые из них обновились даже в диспетчере задач. Можно отметить новый стиль папок. Однако абсолютно не произвели впечатления новые иконки игр – старые, просто на белом фоне. Помимо иконок кое-где поменялась и графика, но все это так незначительно, что вместо двадцати скриншотов, лучше не приводить ни одного – смысла особого нет.

Любители «списков» могут радоваться – «list view» (список) вернулся в 5456. Не лучше и не хуже, чем он был в ХР.

Но все это не без ложки дегтя. В 5456 очень много графических нелепостей. Ну чем можно объяснить, что разделитель правой и левой частей Explorer – черный, а временами закрашивается чем-то совсем немыслимым? Кстати, на этом же скриншоте видны вновь переработанные полосы занятого места на дисках – мне кажется, стало хуже.

Да извинят меня в Microsoft, но окна при развертывании во весь экран теперь выглядят ну просто страшно. И Фредди Крюгера не нужно – посмотришь, и уже трепещешь! Ну почему нельзя было вернуть то, что было в 5342? Почему мы должны вспоминать 4074 с его Jade, где было подобное же явление. Прописать текстуру #000000 каждый умеет, для этого не надо арендовать штат работников в Редмонде!

А вот самое «сладенькое» в новой сборке – указатель мыши темы Aero. Правда по какой-то загадочной причине он не включается по-умолчанию. Его можно задействовать из соответствующего апплета персонолизации. Мое мнение – всяко лучше, чем острый указатель из ХР. Новая анимация радует – лучше песочных часиков. Это самое замечательное нововведение в 5456, самое замечательное.

Внешних изменений в приложениях не так много. Можно отметить обновление в Movie Maker (черные симпатичные панели) и некоторые мелочи – на них даже останавливаться не хочется. Приложения с прозрачным «низом» (Windows Media Player, Photo Gallery) с новой прозрачной текстурой выглядят несколько отталкивающе.

Наконец, изменения коснулись Media Center. Правда, очень маленькие и я никак не могу понять – что же изменилось? Например, раздел видео и ТВ теперь слились в одно целое, но дело даже не в этом. Что-то изменилось.

Ну как, не устали? Пора поразмяться на практике – рассмотрим, что нового с точки зрения функциональности.

Практические изменения и инструменты
Здесь, безусловно, лидирует диспетчер задач. Люблю когда обновляют привычные, обыденные вещи! Итак, в разделе процессов мы видим новый столбец «Description» — описание. Тут буквально расписывается, какой процесс чем является. Очень удобно! Правда многими любимые svhost так и остались… Host Process for Windows. Другое проявление темперамента Microsoft то, что после внедрения столбца описания напрочь исчез столбец с занимаемым процессом местом. Ну как такое можно объяснить?

Microsoft не раз говорила, что в RC1 будет улучшен UAC – предупреждений станет меньше. Пока что это не очевидно. Вернее, согласитесь, сложно определить стало ли меньше сообщений или нет. Учитывая, что я к ним привык. Поэтому очень вероятно, что их меньше. Но не настолько, чтобы это можно было заметить.

Network Center больше не существует. Да здравствует Network and Sharing Center! Я с локальными сетями на «Вы», поэтому ничего хорошего или плохого сказать об изменениях в сети не могу.

Аналогично небольшие изменения произошли в Центре безопасности, Ultimate Extras теперь присутствует в апплете Windows Update и т.д.

А вот действительно практичная и интересная функция – в IE7 вы можете вручную перетаскивать вкладки. Просто берете и перетаскиваете. Очень удобно, если вы любите во всем порядок (закроем глаза на то, что Microsoft уже объявила IE7 «полнофункциональным» эдак месяца три назад).

В том же IE7 провайдером поиска по-умолчанию теперь обозначается Windows Live, а не MSN Search.

Качество работы aka быстродействие, стабильность и ошибки
А вот здесь, «всем ветрам назло», есть видимые улучшения. Сборка работает быстрее, чем Beta 2! Ошибок – очень много. Я говорил о некоторых очевидных – графика хромает, все куда-то заезжает, проезжает, переезжает. Не говорю уже об остатках неизвестных мне кодировок в интерфейсе! Кавардак, одним словом! Но скорость работы – впечатляет. Explorer просто летает!

Установка в 25 минут тоже оставляет положительное впечатление, не говоря уже о хорошей работе, а вместе они создают впечатление качественного продукта. Конечно не без минусов – в сборке просто куча графических ошибок. Они фактически повсюду. Но и быстродействие увеличилось – система работает действительно быстрее!

Заключение
Я до безумия рад, что хоть что-то новое нам показали. Не так много, как некогда в старые добрые времена (вспомните сборки 5231, 5259), но есть и сюрпризы! Один приятный сюрприз – новые курсоры, вряд ли кто-то предполагал что они вообще будут. Другой – очень заманчивые изменения в диспетчере задач. Так что все само собой – Microsoft отлаживает уже имеющееся, а затем портит, опять отлаживает, опять портит. И так до… нет, не до бесконечности – до RTM, которую мы увидим уже осенью. А пока 5456 оставляет противоречивые чувства; так и хочется всплакнуть, когда вспоминаешь, сколь отлаженной и готовой была Beta 2.

Installing Vista Beta 2 (Build 5456) on Virtual PC

In terms of names, what Microsoft referred to as Vista Beta 2 was build 5384.  Build 5456 is an improved version of Beta 2 that fixes the bugs discovered in 5384.  One further point, Microsoft say that Build 5456 will be the first version that can be upgraded to Windows Vista RC1 (Release Candidate).

Whether you have build 5384, 5456 or 5472, I now recommend you switch to this page Vista Beta 2 Build 5472.  I also have instructions for older Vista builds, they are probably obsolete, but just in case that is the only version you have, here are the references: 5308,5270 and 5112.

When you decide to install Windows Vista Beta 2 on a Virtual Machine, don’t be in a hurry.  Have a good book to read or a T.V. program to watch.  The install takes 40 minutes and while there are long intervals where no human input is required, the whole procedure slows up the host machine. 

Introduction to Installing Windows Vista on Virtual PC 2004

From the outset, I believed that it would be possible to install Vista Build 5456 on Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2004**.  My background is that I have installed about twenty virtual machines before I installed Vista Build 5456.  I choose to install Virtual PC 2004 on Windows Server 2003, even though the setup says explicitly that this host operating system is not recommended.  The reason that I mention these two facts is to give you confidence; to emphasise that while I am no great expert on Virtual PC, yet I got Vista working.  I would also like to report that installing Vista on Virtual PC gets easier with each successive build number.

**The latest version of Virtual PC is 2005.  While it looks flashy, has more features, I just cannot get along with version 2005, principally because it drives me mad; every time I do anything it asks for my username and password.

For experienced techies, who are geniuses at computing, all you need to do is absorb these key concepts:

1. Download an Image from connect.microsoft, or order Vista Beta 2 free from CPP (Consumer Preview Program), you get a DVD to install Build 5438 on your own computer. The final alternative is via a TechNet or MSDN subscription.
2. Create a new Virtual Machine with Virtual PC.
3. Capture the image of the Vista Beta 2 in the Virtual Machine.
4. Patience and faith that the Vista Build 5456 install will work.

For ordinary mortals, I will provide step-by-step instructions to help you install your Vista Beta 2 on Virtual PC.

First Goal – Get a Copy of the Windows Vista Build

Perhaps the best way to get a copy of the Windows Vista Beta (and later RC1) is from the Vista Beta CPP scheme.

One of Microsoft’s satellite companies called Connect deals with Beta downloads.  You can find them at connect.microsoft.com.  The reason that I am vague about how I got started with Connect is purely bad memory.  I cannot be sure whether it was a bonus of being an MCT, MVP or whether I just saw the site and applied to trial Microsoft’s Beta software.

What I do remember is getting stuck when I first joined, I could never seem to find the downloads, then I could not find the product keys – most frustrating.  My message is this, once you have been accepted into the Vista Beta Program, search and you will find everything that you need there on the Connect site – somewhere. Incidentally, I also applied for the Exchange 2007 (E12) Beta, and after a few days received links to download that DVD ISO image, thus getting an account with Connect will be useful in the future, for example with Longhorn.

The Actual Vista 5456 image

At this point, we need to download the Vista Build 5456 image; not a trivial task as there are a bewildering number of variations.  The only trap is to make sure you have the appropriate version for your x86 or x64 processor.  Once I made my selection, the Connect site supplied me with a single file, which was a DVD image in ISO format.  Incidentally, I applaud Microsoft on their download engine – File Transfer Manager, this software is intelligent and continues where you left off should the internet connection time-out and you have to reconnect.  As I mentioned earlier, build 5438 is available on DVD, which is much more convenient for the install.

Second Goal – Create a Simple Microsoft Virtual PC

My advice is keep the New Virtual PC setup as simple as possible, just follow the defaults, the one exception is increase the 512 Ram memory for your Vista Virtual Machine to 1GB.  By all means adjust the settings once you have created the machine and installed the operating system.

1. From the Virtual PC Console, click New…
2. Create a virtual machine.
3. Choose a location with at least 16 GB of free space.
4. Operating System, Other or Windows Server 2003 it doesn’t matter.
5. Adjusting Ram – 512 MB Ram is recommended, I choose 1,000 MB.
6. A new virtual hard disk.
7. Name and Location.  Previously, I created a special partition for VM images..
8. Finish.

Third Goal – Capture the CD – Use Physical Drive

The situation so far, we have obtained the ISO DVD image, now we want to boot the Virtual Machine, not from the physical CD, but from the bootable ISO image.  It is always worth reading the Release Notes and in this instance the gem in the document was that there would be an upgrade path from Beta 2 to Vista RC1 (Release Candidate).

There is problem with downloading Vista builds starting with 5308 and including 5456.  These build is over the 2.2 GB DVD limit that Virtual Machine 2004 understands.  (Build 5270 was under 2.2 GB).  Solution, I invested $48 in Nero 7 ImageDrive, what Nero 7 does is make the ISO image appear as a Physical drive, as a result you can by-pass the ‘Capture ISO Image which has the 2.2 GB limit.

What ImageDrive did for me was capture the vista_5456.5.060620-1700_winmain_idx03_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso to the I: drive.  (Your drive letter is likely to be E: F: or G:)

What we do in the Virtual PC console, is click on the top menu called ‘CD’  and select – Use Physical Drive I: (See screen shot, bearing in mind that your drive letter will be different).

Fourth Goal – Create a Partition and Install Vista

I was thrilled that the Virtual CD was able to boot from the image captured on my I: drive.  The first few menus were straightforward, the only slight hiccup was the CD Key, I requested a ‘5342 and Up Ultimate Keys’ and they worked on my 5456 build.  I guess the key phrase is ‘and Up’.

Earlier versions gave me enormous frustration when Windows Install asked the question ‘Where do you want to install Windows’, however Build 5456 handled creating the virtual disk smoothly.  (Problems with Build 5308)

Once I agreed to the licence menu, the install continued copying files, expanding, installing features, I came back 30 minutes later and Windows Install had completed successfully.

At the end of the install Vista asks you to set the Region and Time Zone.  Another bonus was that Vista Beta recognised the United Kingdom keyboard layout.

In terms of efficiency and intelligence, Vista has Microsoft’s best install to date.  For example, XP installs are a pain in that the halt after about 10 minutes and ask you to input networking information.  Vista had no such interruption, moreover it appeared to automatically detect the network and give it self, not an APIPA, but a suitable IP address for the subnet where I installed e.g. 192.168.0.10.  This was not magic, it picked up the IP address either from and XP machine with Internet Sharing or the traditional DHCP server.

Post Installation Tasks and Troubleshooting

A new development is the need to create the administrator’s account, Microsoft no longer create an administrator by default.

When the the earlier Vista builds finished installing, I was disappointed.  In 5308, the 256 color resolution meant an atrocious display of any graphics moreover, the machine ran unacceptably slowly – even for Beta software.  Then I remembered the Virtual Machine Additions.  In a nutshell installing this add-on transformed my Vista 5308 experience.

With build 5456 I learnt from this experience and attempted to add the Virtual Machine Additions even before I started the install.  I was slightly surprised that the Virtual PC kept asking me to install the Virtual Machine Additions. 

To install the Virtual Machine Additions – again, I launched the Virtual PC console and clicked the ‘Action’ Menu and selected, ‘Install the Virtual Machine Additions’.  It seemed to install very quickly – too quickly.  To cut a long story short, this procedure was useless, the machine kept prompting me to install the Virtual Machine Additions.  Finally, I went for the throat and drilled to D:\windows\ and double clicked setup.  From here the Setup InstallShield Wizard appeared, took its time, but installed the Virtual Machine Additions properly.

What lulled me was the fact that build 5456 had good graphics from the start and silly me thought the slow performance was down to a checked beta version, the reality was the slow performance was down to lack of Virtual Machine Additions.

I found that the best setting for Network Adapter1 was to select the host NIC.  In particular, this configuration cured a specific problem:  Virtual PC could not open the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, or The Virtual Machine Network Services driver has failed to install.

My machine was fortunate in having 2 GB of Ram, so I allocated 1 GB to Vista.  The problem was the Virtual PC Console would not let me use more than 300 MB.  The error was: The virtual machine could not be started because there was not enough memory available on the host.

The true problem was interference from other programs, in my case Nero CD burner, in another case SQL.  Therefore, try judicious zapping images in Task manager until you find the root cause, I say again, take care ending processes.  The safe way would be to remove programs via the Add or Remove Programs.

Footnote

The above problem did not occur with build 5456 (only 5270).  I credit Microsoft for ironing out that behaviour, however, it could have been the fact that I upgraded from Nero 6 to Nero 7.

  Once you have installed Vista in your virtual machine, access it via Remote Desktop.

Summary of Installing Windows Vista in a Virtual PC

Obtain your copy of Windows Vista by either downloading an Image from connect.microsoft, or on DVD from CPP (Consumer Preview Program).  Launch the Virtual Machine console to create a new Virtual disk / image / machine.  Capture the image from the CD menu.  The actual installation takes about half an hour, but the menus are straightforward, even easy if you have experience from installing XP.

When Microsoft released Windows Vista Beta 2 to the public earlier this month, it was received with mixed if not poor reviews. Some problems were attributed to the fact that the operating system was in beta, yet other problems appeared to be so glaringly obvious that one would have to wonder how Beta 2 ever escaped QA. Luckily, now we can forget all about Beta 2 and move on because there is a new build of Windows Vista out, and it is reportedly much improved over the Beta 2 release.

According to Paul Thurrott, Build 5456 is «so much better than Beta 2, in fact, that I’m begging the company to offer it to everyone that signed up for the public beta through the Community Public Preview (CPP).» Some of the new enhancements found in this release include:

• Less time required for the install
• Default network setting is now a «public network»
• Faster access to network PCs and shares
• Renamed and revamped Network Center; it’s Network and Sharing Center now
• Quick launch icon for Flip 3D
• Appropriate performance warnings when using Aero Glass
• List view added back to Explorer’s view styles
• Drag and drop tabs in Internet Explorer 7
• Aero mouse cursor
• Improved performance, new icons, and new branding

And those are just some of the additions. Surely, as more and more testers get their hands on this build, reviews will sprout out from everywhere. As Thurrott says, it would be nice for the public to get its hands on this build if it is that much better, but a CPP release is definitely more trouble than it’s worth for Microsoft. More than likely, the next public release of Windows Vista will be RC1. I’m thinking that what we saw with Beta 2—frantic download frenzies —is minor as compared to what will be coming with RC1. It’s just a hunch.
