Setup[edit | edit source]
Setup is practically similar to aforementioned builds of Vista, however the «Next» button is now much larger. The EULA has also been updated, and the wallpaper of the OOBE is essentially the same aurora wallpaper used in the first 2 stages of setup. Finally, the orb used during the OOBE has been changed with the start button orb, and it is positioned higher. The orb can even be clicked, which has the same functionality as the Start
button on the bottom-right. The Japanese version does not have the setup translated, although it would end up getting translated in 5308.50.

- The «logon» screensaver shows up duplicated in Screensaver Properties.
- «scrnsave» screensaver throws up a blank error.
Shutdown[edit | edit source]
The shutdown sound is cut off during playback.
Starter SKU[edit | edit source]
This is the first build to block processors newer than the Pentium III, as the following error appears if logging in with an incompatible processor:
You cannot use with this computer because the [processor] component is not supported. Contact your computer manufacturer for assistance or try fixing the problem by running Windows® Update in safe mode. To restart your computer in safe mode, click OK
According to documentation in the later build 5356, the Intel Celeron, Pentium III (except for Pentium III Xeon) and AMD Athlon processors are supported, but the Intel Pentium 4, Pentium M, Core and AMD Opteron (as well as any later) processors are incompatible.
To use the Starter SKU, it either needs to be installed on a computer or VM utilizing one of the supported processors or the CPUID needs to be modified to run it on newer processors. This works with VMware by modifying the VMX file of the VM, with QEMU by setting -cpu=pentium3
or 86Box by using the «Intel Celeron (Mendocino)» or «VIA Cyrix III» processor.
Without this, only Safe mode can be used properly.

Installing Windows Vista Beta 2 on Virtual PC 2004 (Build 5270)
When you decide to install Windows Vista Beta 2 on a Virtual Machine, don’t be in a hurry. Have a good book to read or a T.V. program to watch. The install takes hours and while there are long intervals where no human input is required, the whole procedure slows up the host machine.
Please note: here is an update featuring Windows Virtual PC 2007 SP1
Introduction to Installing Vista on Virtual PC 2004
From the outset I believed that it would be possible to install Vista Build 5270 on Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2004. My background is that I have installed about ten virtual machines before I installed Vista Beta 2. I choose to install Virtual PC 2004 on Windows Server 2003, even though the setup explicitly says this is not host operating system is not recommended. The reason that I mention these two facts is to give you confidence; to emphasise that while I am no great expert on Virtual PC, yet I got Vista working.
For experienced techies, who are geniuses at computing, all you need to do is absorb these key concepts:
- Download an Image from connect.microsoft, else get a CD.
- Create a new Virtual Machine with Virtual PC.
- Have a mixture of patience and faith that the Vista Beta 2 install will work.
For ordinary mortals, I will provide step-by-step instructions to help you install your Vista Beta 2 build 5270 on Virtual PC 2004. (Information on Build 5112)
Topics for Installing Vista Build 5270 on Virtual PC 2004
- First Goal – Get a Copy of the Build
- Second Goal – Create a Simple Virtual PC
- Third Goal – Capture the CD – Use Physical Drive
- Fourth Goal – Create a Partition for the Vista Install
- Post Installation Essential Tasks and Troubleshooting
First Goal – Get a Copy of the Vista Build
One of Microsoft’s satellite companies called Connect deals with Beta downloads. You can find them at connect.microsoft.com. The reason that I am vague about how I got started with Connect is purely bad memory. I cannot be sure whether it was a bonus of being an MCT, MVP or whether I just saw the site and applied to trial Microsoft’s Beta software.
What I do remember is getting stuck when I first joined, I could never seem to find the downloads, then I could not find the product keys – most frustrating. My message is once you have been accepted into the Vista Beta Program, search and you will find everything that you need there on the Connect site – somewhere. Incidentally, I also applied for the Exchange 12 Beta, and after a few days received links to downloads that DVD ISO image.
At this point, we need to download the Vista Beta 2 image. The Connect site supplied me with a file, which was a DVD image in ISO format. Incidentally, I applaud Microsoft on their download engine – File Transfer Manager, this software is intelligent and continues where you left off if the internet connection breaks.
Second Goal – Create a Simple Virtual PC
My advice is keep the New Virtual PC setup as simple as possible, just follow the defaults, the one exception is increase the 512 Ram memory for your Vista Virtual Machine. By all means adjust the settings once you have created the machine and installed the operating system.
- From the Virtual PC Console, click New…
- Create a virtual machine.
- Choose a location with at least 16 GB of free space.
- Operating System, Other or Windows Server 2003 doesn’t matter.
- Adjusting Ram – 512 MB Ram is recommended, I choose 1,000 MB.
- A new virtual hard disk.
- Name and Location. Previously, I created a special partition for VM images..
- Finish.
Third Goal – Capture the CD – Use Physical Drive…
The situation so far, we have downloaded the ISO DVD image, now we want to boot the Virtual Machine, not from the physical CD, but from the bootable ISO image.
What we do in the Virtual PC console, is click on the top menu called ‘CD’ and select – Capture ISO image, then browse to the location where you downloaded the ISO DVD. «DecCTP_5270_32bit_Main_DVD.ISO» in the screen shot.
.
Fourth Goal – Create a Partition and Install Vista
I was thrilled that the Virtual CD was able to boot from the image, the first few menus were straightforward. My problem was in creating a partition on the Virtual PC. The solution maybe as simple as resetting the Virtual Machine when you reach the menu opposite, ‘Where do you want to Install Windows?’. What I did was to click on New (Green Cross), created a new partition, selected Format (Red Bar) and only then Reset the Virtual Machine from the Action menu.
When the Virtual Machine restarted, it seemed as though I was repeating another failure, for example, Vista Beta 2 asked for the product key – again. Then a glimmer of hope, the partition information was just as I left it. Good news, this time, it asks for a machine name, I entered a NetBIOS name and the install carried on. The install then completed without anymore interaction from me. However, it does take for ever; including one long automatic reboot in the middle, thank goodness for the progress bar at the bottom of the screen, otherwise I would not have believed anything was happening.
One install menu both amazed and surprised me, is the above: ‘Installation is taking longer than expected, but should be finishing soon. Do not restart your computer during this time.’ I do believe that I was lucky in that I was doing other jobs and just left the install to progress at its own pace. If I had been watching, I would have been impatient and rebooted prematurely. It took over two hours to install on my Virtual Machine.
At the end of the install Vista asks you to set the Region and Time Zone. In terms of efficiency and intelligence, Vista has Microsoft’s best install to date. For example, XP installs are a pain in that the halt after about 10 minutes and ask you to input networking information. Vista had no such interruption, moreover it appeared to automatically detect the network and give it self, not an APIPA, but a suitable IP address for the subnet where I installed e.g. 192.168.0.10. This was not magic, it picked up the IP address either from and XP machine with Internet Sharing or the traditional DHCP server.
Post Installation Tasks and Troubleshooting
When the Vista Build 5270 finished installing I was desperately disappointed. The 256 color resolution meant an atrocious display of any graphics and the machine ran unacceptably slowly – even for Beta software. Then I remembered the Virtual Machine Additions. In a nutshell installing this add-on transformed my Vista 5270.
To install the Virtual Machine Additions I first selected Capture CD, this changed the menu from the ISO DVD, necessary for the install, to Use Physical Drive D: Next I selected the Action menu at the top Virtual PC 2004 console – Install Add Virtual Machine Additions. Wait for a Setup menu to appear, then click Ok and allow the Virtual Machine to restart.
On one occasion nothing happened, so I explored the captured D: and ran the InstallShield Wizard manually, I was relieved, and impressed to see it find new hardware, for example Graphics Adapter.
I found that the best setting for Network Adapter 1 was to select the host NIC. In particular, this configuration cured a specific problem: Virtual PC could not open the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, or The Virtual Machine Network Services driver has failed to install.
My machine was fortunate in having 2 GB of Ram, so I allocated 1 GB to Vista. The problem was the Virtual PC Console would not let me use more than 300 MB. The error was: The virtual machine could not be started because there was not enough memory available on the host.
The true problem was interference from other programs, in my case Nero CD burner, in another case SQL. So try judicious zapping images in Task manager until you find the root cause, I say again, take care ending processes. The safe way would be to remove programs via the Add or Remove Programs.

Windows Vista Build 5270.9 is a Pre-Beta 2 Build of Windows Vista. This build is the official December 2005 Community Technology Preview, released to beta testers on 2005-12-19.
The Starter SKU of this build has the «Windows Starter 2007» watermark instead of «Windows Vista Beta 2».
It is the last build to include the «Professional Standard, «Professional Standard N» and the «Professional Enterprise» SKUs. They were replaced by build 5308 with the «Business», «Business (N)» and the «Enterprise» SKUs respectively.
New Features and Changes[]
Setup[]
Setup got a huge overhaul in this build.
Now the first step of the setup asks you to enter a product key, compared to Windows XP Setup where the first thing you do is to agree the EULA.
If an internet connection is present, the setup downloads up-to-date components when you enter your product key.
After that, you need to agree the End User License Agreement (EULA).
Then, you need to choose if you want to upgrade or perform a custom install.
It still uses the build 5098 wallpaper on the autorun window however the actual setup wallpaper is now an Aurora wallpaper.
Out-of-box experience[]
This build’s OOBE received huge changes and new options as well.
The OOBE now asks you to choose a desktop background and some pre-OOBE steps such as selecting the timezone are moved into OOBE process.
When the OOBE is finished, it shows the message «You’re ready to start» under the Vista orb.
Themes[]
This build of Windows Vista still includes the XP-like names: Windows Vista and Windows Classic.
You can now customize the color schemes of the Aero theme under the «Color Schemes» applet in Control Panel.
There are new stock color variants of Aero theme: Aero (this is the default one), Frost, Smoke, Seafoam and others. You can also disable the transparency effect in the same applet.
The applet also contains a color mixer tool to create different Aero colors from HSL color levels.
Icon sizes[]
Windows can now show desktop icons as «Small», «Medium», «Large» and «Extra Large».
Windows Defender[]
Windows Defender is the renamed version of the former Windows AntiSpyware. It also now runs under standard user privileges.
This app is now integrated into Security Center as well as having a tray icon for it.
New spyware definitions can be delivered through Automatic Updates via Windows Update.
Windows Photo Gallery[]
This app now works in this build of Windows Vista.
Default view mode is Gallery View and it supports adding titles, photo rating, photo captions and metadata tags.
Simple editing can be done via the Fix command which transitions the app into Edit View. You can auto-adjust or manage exposure and colors of individual photos.
A new photo printing wizard was added into Photo Gallery.
You can also acquire photos from digital cameras, scanners and other devices.
Windows DVD Maker HD[]
This build of Windows Vista includes this app which is an equivalent of Apple’s iDVD Program.
Windows Collaboration (Windows Meeting Space)[]
This build is the first to include a new app called «Windows Collaboration» which is later known as Windows Meeting Space.
Windows Collaboration is the peer-to-peer collaboration application that allows one to ten people to remotely work together.
Compared into other P2P apps, this one doesn’t require a server to work. It can be used with Wi-Fi.
Other changes[]
IE7 runs in Protected Mode in this build.
IE7 now has support for International Domain Names (IDN)
This build also renames «Windows Migration Wizard» to «Windows Transfer».
New AutoPlay dialog option was added for Super Fetch: «Speed up my system using this device». This feature requires at least 64MB free space to work.
Windows Update is now accessible via Control Panel.
Volume Shadow Copy service has a client version included in this build.

Home > Windows > Review: Microsoft Windows Vista Build 5270
Submitted by Shah Jahan

Windows
“A while back, when Microsoft announced its decision to no longer release a monthly CTP for Vista, we were a bit worried, since we wanted to follow-up on the latest developments of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system (though Microsoft promised to update current versions via critical updates). To Microsoft’s credit, it has kept its word and has released an update sooner than we had anticipated, and needless to say, the changes in this release are substantial.”
In hope that this is the first review on the internet for Vista 5270, I will try to keep it as factual as possible…
Microsoft Windows Vista 5270.9 (aka the December CTP) is the final build to be given to the Technical Beta testers before Vista reaches code complete. For more information about the background of the December CTP please read the previous post on this topic..
As most of you know, the November CTP failed to make it to the scene, causing much dissent in the ranks of Beta Testers worldwide. This is very important, because it put pressure on Microsoft to release the Decemeber CTP as soon as possible.
As far as my impression about this build, it can best be summed up in a list of quick, sharp, and to the (very pointy) point. In a nutshell it is beautiful and buggy. Read on…
- From the very first, the aesthetic niceties of this build are immediately visible. Setup itself (from within Windows XP, or from boot from DVD even!) comes with transparency support; aero; and the MCE background.
- Upgrade from XP is disabled in this build, though I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions it cannot hurt to tell you that we suspect that next build will have more-or-less flawless XP-upgrading, and this once came very close
- Setup takes longer than 5231, but not too long..
- It actually supports formatting and creating partitions (Yipee!!), so I managed to get Vista running by itself on this system without dual-boot or upgrading or anything (after 4 tries!).
- The in-setup partition manager has a nasty habit of adding one to teh partition number every time you do something to it.. So I ended up (the first 3 times) with one partition on Disk(0) but labelled Partition(3); which gave me hell to boot from it.
- Build 5270 does *not* run Windows Live Messenger; I have yet to test Office 12.
- Do not, no matter what run WLM, it ruins explorer.exe
- DWM has been integrated into the system very deeply, you will not notice performance benefits in Classic mode..
- Microsoft has integrated the (annoying!) ‘feature’ of prompting you before you open any program, change your screen saver, add a wallpaper, type a letter, click the start menu; you have to first tell it “I accept the security risks” again and again. Only known work-around is to use the real Administrator account..
- DWM tweaks from previous versions (pre-5259) no longer work; you need to use the 5259 and later tweaks (namely using HKEY_CURRENT_USER to store settings..)
- Windows Defender now ships installed and working, and is a completely different program from MS AntiSpyware as far as power and interface go; only the engine beneath seems to be the same.
- P2P code (the most pondered-over item in our previous posts) seems to have been removed
So much for that!
