From Windows Wallpaper Wiki
Windows Vista build 5342 added six folders consisting of 36 placeholder wallpapers (6 wallpapers in each folder). They were created by an unknown Microsoft employee. Instead of naming them by objects that they depict, they were named imgX.jpg (where X is a number of image), which has been the case for Windows wallpapers ever since then. There are six categories of wallpapers: Black and White, Textures, Fine Art, Vistas, Abstract and Widescreen. The 4:3 wallpapers are at 1600×1200 and the widescreen ones at 1600×900.
By build 5355, placeholder wallpapers were replaced by an entirely new set, except img15 and img19, which was oddly reallocated to img13. Additionally, the Fine Art category was renamed to Paintings and Abstract to Light Auras.
