Windows update windows 98 second edition

This Update CD is a community sourced collection of official Microsoft
updates, security patches and hotfixes for Windows 98 Second Edition. It’s based on the Windows Me Update CD (Release 2.2) by «micbr» here on archive.org (https://archive.org/details/wmeupd-r2). 

It includes:

-An interactive, automatic installer for over 100 separate
updates, security patches and hotfixes, including Windows Installer 2.0, Data Access Components 2.8 SP1 and Jet
Database Engine 4.0 SP8.

-Options to update preinstalled Windows
components to Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Windows Media Player 7.1
during the installation process, along with installing updates and
security patches for each.

-A collection of recommended and optional component updates for Windows 98 Second Edition, including:

  • Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (w/ updates)
  • DirectX 7
  • DirectX 8.2 (w/ updates)
  • DirectX 9.0c (w/ updates)
  • Microsoft .NET Framework, 1.1 and 2.0 (w/ updates)
  • Visual Basic Runtimes
  • Visual C++ Runtimes (6.0 and 2005 SP1 w/ MFC Security Update)
  • Windows Media Encoder 7.1
  • Windows Media Player 7.1 and Windows Media Player 9 (w/ updates)

—Additionally I recommend the following updates for Windows 98 SE that are not included in the package due to size constraints:

  • Update for Windows 98 SEs Network Stack from the Windows XP disc (preferably with Service Pack 3 for the newest version):
    Insert Windows XP disc -> Run setup.exe -> «Perform additional tasks» -> «Set up a home or small office network».
  • Microsoft IntelliPoint 4.1
    Although it’s meant for Microsoft mice, it works for all mice I tested. It updates the mouse and input stack of Windows 98 SE and even contains some nice themes.
    It can be found on WinWorld for example.

This
CD has specifically been compiled to include only official, unmodified
updates and hotfixes as they were originally released by Microsoft, and
excludes unofficial updates, third-party utilities, and UI enhancements. These can however be installed separately later, should you choose to
do so.

— blue: these updates are OFFICIAL unmodified hotfixes released by Microsoft

— updates with a * at the end are NOT available from Windows Update

— most (if not all) updates hosted at www.mdgx.com are also not available from Windows Update

— red: these updates are UNOFFICIAL hotfixes released (in the main) by people who frequent MSFN

— updates with # at the end require other updates to be installed first, so read the info!

— the list was originally ordered by kb number, but recently I have just been adding the latest to the top, so the numbers might not be in order.

Install Instructions

Before installing U98SESP3.EXE make sure that:
1/ You have the original w98SE installation disc.
It will change core system files. It means that if something goes wrong you must be prepared to reinstall windows from the beginning.
Sometimes installing U98SESP3.EXE after a fresh install is working normaly while it failed on an old install.
2/ You made a back up of all important datas.
It’s extremely unlikely that an error forces you to reinstall windows and eventualy to reformat thus to erase your hard drive.
But for the sake of safety, please do it!
3/ You made a back up of your system files
A copy of the «windows» and «Program Files» directories, at least the «windows» directory, preferably on a second physical hard drive or on CD or DVD or an external drive.
This is usefull to revert back to a prior w98se install which was already updated and functioning well.
Restoring windows 98 can be done simply be recopying all the system files back to their original location, in dos mode. The easiest way is to use a second physical (not a partition) and internal (not USB) hard drive.
It’s aslo a good idea to make sure a copy of the registry has been automaticaly preserved in the system files you backed up and to know how to restore the registry in dos: boot in DOS, then type SCANREG /RESTORE. 
4/ You have time and patience to read all the instructions
If you are somebody who will select all options no matter what they are or who will click «OK» instead of «Cancel» on any dialog box without knowing what was the question about, then you are sure to run into trouble.
Don’t do it in a rush. If words are written on the screen it must be important. Please read them.

    Доброго времени суток!

    Волею случая (так уж получилось) встал вопрос об установке обновлений для MS Windows ME, русской версии. К сожалению тут же наткнулся на кучу препятствий — неработающий уже черти сколько Windows Update, отсутствие информации по этому поводу и так далее. Ценой неимоверных усилий удалось найти список обновлений английской версии и на его основе собрать обновления для русской. Таким образом родился пакет обновлений для русской версии Win ME, основанный на инструкции по ее «правильной установке», найденной в интернетах. Дальше — больше: ввиду аналогичности большинства моментов был создан аналогичный пакет для русской Win 98 SE, собранный на основе паков от maxud. Одним словом, решил выложить здесь ссылки для тех, кому могут понадобится данные пакеты в процессе установки системы на даунгрейдовскую машину. Хотя тот же WinME и нелюбим олдгеймерами, в том числе за отсутствие нативного режима MS-DOS, сырой PC Health/System Restore — все это потом можно допилить напильником с помощью спецутилит. Оба пака созданы для упрощения установки части компонентов в плане автоматизации процесса.

    Jart, где вы были раньше?))
    Думал, что не найду все апдейты для Миллениума на русском, купил коробочную английскую систему (в надежде, что Unofficial Service Pack спасёт. Не спас, глюки после него).
    Как удалось всё раздобыть?)
    Да, говорят, что Visual Basic 1-6 Runtimes и Visual C++ 6, 7 Runtimes уже входят в Windows Millennium Edition, а доустановить нужно только Visual C++ 2005 Runtimes.
    Нет ли возможности сделать такой же пак, но для английской системы? Если нет, придётся собирать файлы и вручную всё ставить.
    Кстати, система нормально переваривает такой набор обновлений сразу? Windows 9x же почти после каждого подобного апдейта хочет перезагрузиться, а отложишь, установив что-нибудь серьёзное ещё, потом крышу системе сносит…)
    В любом случае, спасибо за список обновлений)

    1) нет ли для ENG такого ? Интересно Win98
    2) нет ли такого для win 95 ?
    3) из разряда вообще некрофильство — нет ли такого для win3.11 ? Все же под нее патчи выходили, ну или где то список достать ?

    Раньше просто как-то не актуален был вопрос, а тут вот понадобилось запустить МЕ на одной машине.Неимоверными усилиями))) Нашел логи обновлений с Windows Update от 2005 и 2009 годов для английской версии и на их основе начал искать обновы для русской — что-то нарыл в инете, что-то с дисков майкрософта, что-то с оф. сайтов, что-то мне прислали по просьбе на других форумах и так далее.VBasic 1-4 в системе нет точно, насчет остального кое-какие длл-ки есть, но не все, тем более что заменяются они обновленными версиями.Теоретически да, но это займет некоторое время, не могу сказать когда это будет. Пока могу порекомендовать посетить эту страницу, там помимо упомянутых Вами сервис паков есть и обновления (официальные и неофициальные) отдельно.На реальной машине все прошло гладко. В процессе установки будет 11 перезагрузок, они выставлены в тех местах, где апдейты/устанавливаемые программы требовали обязательную перезагрузку. Также тестил на виртуальной машине — вот тут уже в среднем один раз из трех во время установки фреймворков или после нее вылетала System Restore, но все при этом ставилось ровно. Вообще в принципе System Restore после установки данного пакета все же лучше выкорчевать из системы, уж слишком она там сырая.Да не за что.Пофиксил.Опять таки теоретически можно сделать, но это займет время. Пока не могу обещать когда это будет, но думаю как только появится свободное время займусь этим вопросом. А пока можете посмотреть англоязычные пакеты обновлений для Win98SE от maxud или пакеты и обновления отдельно для оригинальной 98 здесь, для Win98SE здесь.С русской версией все печально — апдейтов практически нет, а некоторые из них и вовсе для нее не выходили (есть только английские). Существует кумулятивный пак для русской Win95 OSR2 от maxud, но он вызывает ряд проблем, в частности там некоторые системные файлы взяты из немецкой версии окон. Если хотите попробовать — вот тема на форуме с собранными обновами, часть ссылок не работает, но по названиям можно практически все нагуглить. Если интересует англоязычная версия, то WINDOWS 95/95A OSR1 ESSENTIAL FREE UPGRADES + FIXES, WINDOWS 95B/95C OSR 2.X ESSENTIAL FREE UPGRADES + FIXES.WINDOWS/WFWG 3.1x ESSENTIAL FREE UPGRADES + FIXES. О русской версии даже и не спрашивайте…

    Спасибо огромное! А я уж было собрал обновы по кускам из соответствующей темы на ру-борде, но вручную ставить каждый раз довольно гемморно, а тут все в одном. Спасибо!)
    PS/ Тему срочно прилепить наверх раздела «Хард и Софт» надо, чтоб не терялась.

  16. Прошу пардону, а как модифицирован MDCU в данном пакете?
    А то у меня 98я с последним MDCU, MDDAC, IE6Sp1б Office XP и прочее, прочее… В общем почти усе из шапки всем нам известной темы на борде. Отсюда вопрос, имеет ли смысл ставить этот пак и как он встанет, когда почти все уже поставлено.
    Ну и и еще…. Версия винды остается 4.**** А или становится 4.**** В?

    Версия остается А. Если уже все стоит, думаю, пакет ставить не стоит, в первую очередь он предназначается для чистой установки системы. По модификациям:


    Дарк Шнайдер нравится это.

  19. Кстати я тут нашел диск с ENG обновлениями win98,ME за февраль 2004 года.

    Второй момент, можно было бы как то разделить оригинальные update от уже не официальных ?
    Что там с Win95 ?
