Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703, codenamed Redstone 2) is an update for Windows 10, which was released to the public on 11 April 2017.
While being a minor update, it notably introduces a major overhaul to the first time setup process along with many new features and internal improvements.
It is the last version of Windows in which flight-signed binaries are considered invalid past the certificate expiration date, which results in the operating system being rendered unbootable. This functionality would remain up until build 14963.
New features and changes[edit | edit source]
- Paint 3D debuted in this update.
- Added support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
- Added Night Light.
- Added Game Mode.
- Gaming features can now be adjusted in the Settings app using the Gaming page without having to use the Xbox app.
- Improvements to Gaming features.
- Updates to Microsoft Edge.
- Updates to Cortana.
- The ability to delay updates for up to 35 days was added to the Pro SKU.
- Changed update mechanism to Unified Update Platform (UUP).
- The OOBE gained a huge redesign, most notably with the removal of Express settings and the integration of Cortana.
- Improvements to privacy settings.
- Updates to the Settings app.
- Added Storage Sense.
- The classic desktop version of Windows Defender has been redesigned into a modernized UWP app. The older app continued to co-exist until Windows 10 October 2018 Update.
- Introduced the ability to create folders for Start menu tiles.
- Added more personalization features.
- Updates to existing built-in UWP apps.
Removed features[edit | edit source]
- The ability to postpone the download of certain updates by designating a network connection as «metered» is no longer possible. Windows Update will download updates regardless if the network is metered or not. This was used as a workaround by users to avoid the requirement for automatic downloads of updates.
- The Briefcase functionality was completely removed. Previously, it was disabled by default in Windows 8, but it could be enabled with a registry tweak.
- The Help menu from File Explorer’s menu bar was removed.
- The legacy Display control panel applet was removed.
- Interactive Services Detection was crippled as to where it doesn’t accept any input.
Leftovers[edit | edit source]
Personalization Control Panel[edit | edit source]
Starting with this version, the theme settings got added to the Settings app, and the Personalization control panel was hidden. The Personalization control panel, and it’s sub-pages are still present though, and can be opened using these commands:
- Personalization:
explorer shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921}
- Desktop Background:
explorer.exe shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921} -Microsoft.Personalization\pageWallpaper
- Color and Appearance:

Starting tomorrow the 10th of April 2018 Microsoft will officially be rolling out the long-awaited Redstone update. As with all previous updates, Redstone will be gradually rolled out internationally, so you won’t necessarily get the update automatically on the 10th. If however, you’d like to manually update to Redstone, ‘aka’ the Spring Creators Update on the 10th or shortly after, this guide will show you how.
How to Stop Windows 10 Automatically Updating to Redstone Version 1803.
Just like all the major feature updates that have come in the past, Anniversary, Creators, and Fall Creators, the Redstone (Spring Creators Update) update is being rolled out gradually. This is a strategic plan on Microsoft’s part which is used to manage and distribute the strain on servers. Once a large portion of users have acquired the update, each and every user will then start to act as a miniature server, sharing/uploading the update files to other Windows users.
Related: How to Limit the Download and Upload Speed (Bandwidth) of Window 10 Updates.
The Redstone update contains a wealth of interesting new features and tweaks that will once again improve many aspects of the operating system. Although most of the tweaks are subtle and you probably won’t notice them straight away, there are a few features that will stand out, like Timeline and the changes made to People.
Starting from the 10th of April the Redstone update (Windows version 1803) will begin rolling out. So before we start the more complicated manual process, it’s best to check if you’re lucky enough to get the update automatically. To do this go to Settings > Update and Security, then click Check for Updates. If the update is ready for you to download, you will see the version number listed next to the update file, if you don’t see version 1803 listed, you are getting a regular update or Windows Defender definitions, so you will need to start the manual process.
To start the manual update process there are two different options, the first is to visit the Microsoft Manual Update page and click Update Now. This will download the manual update tool which you can use to update to Redstone.
Note: If you try to do this too early the Fall Creators Update will still be listed, so pay attention to what is listed on the page. I would personally wait until the 11th (EST) before starting the download. It is possible that Microsoft may upload the Redstone patch on the 10th and not change the description from Fall Creators Update until a later date. (this has happened in the past)
The second option is to visit the Microsoft Manual Update page and use the Windows 10 Media Installation Tool. When you have the tool saved to your PC, run it and select Upgrade This PC Now.
Next, follow the prompts and make sure you have keep your files and apps (if it isn’t already selected). Alternatively, if you really want to, you can install a fresh copy of Windows 10 starting from Redstone. Just click Change What to Keep and select the option that you’d like to use.
Keep in mind that the same Note from above applies for this entire process as well.

It has been a full year since Microsoft released the Windows 10 operating system for everyone. The update to Windows 10 was offered as a free upgrade for all the users of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 computers. Now at the first anniversary of Windows 10, Microsoft has decided to release a major update to the Windows 10 operating system. This new anniversary update is being called the Redstone 1 Edition or the First Anniversary Edition. There are many ways of upgrading your Windows 10 system to this new Windows 10 anniversary edition –
1. Through Windows Automatic Updates
This is perhaps the easiest way to upgrade to Windows 10 Redstone Build 1607. All you have to do is turn on the automatic updates and stay connected online. When the updates are released, your Windows PC will download the update and install it. But for this to go smoothly, you should first install all the other Windows updates as soon as possible because once the Windows Build 1607 update is released Microsoft servers will be put under a lot of stress by all the users worldwide and your PC will get stuck on downloading the older updates. Another thing to do to prepare your PC for the update is to keep at least 5-6GB of the space free on the system disk drive – you can do this by removing unneeded programs from your PC.
2. Download Windows 10 Redstone 1 ISO from Techbench
If you want to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 Redstone, then the best and easiest way is to visit the Microsoft Techbench website and download a copy of the Windows 10 with all the latest updates. You can read more about this on : Downloading Windows 10 ISO from Techbench. You should use a download manager for downloading files from Techbench because the files are as large as 3.8 GB.
3. Download Windows 10 Redstone 1 ISO using Windows ISO Downloader
The Windows ISO Downloader is a third party tool that makes downloading ISO images from Microsoft servers very easy. It can help you download all the available variants of Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 to your PC. You can read more about this here : Easily Download Windows 10 ISO Images Legally.
Conclusion: Getting Windows 10 anniversary update can be a little faster than just waiting for the update to arrive via the Automatic Updates if you use some of the tools like Windows ISO Downloader. But it is a matter of personal preference on how you want to update to the anniversary edition of Windows 10.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 development is now well underway internally at Microsoft, which means it’s time to start poking around to see if I can find out what Microsoft is planning for its next major release of Windows 10. Here’s what I’ve learned so far.
Release date
Microsoft itself has already stated that it plans to release two feature updates to Windows 10 each year, one in March/April and the other in September/October. Considering the next scheduled update is March/April 2018, we’re expecting Redstone 4 to be finalized sometime in March 2018 with an official release in the month after.
Features
Timeline and Cloud Clipboard
File this one under totally obvious, but Microsoft is planning to debut both Timeline and Cloud Clipboard features with Redstone 4. Announced last year, these two features were originally going to show up in the Fall Creators Update, but were cut at the last minute.
Timeline is a glorified recent apps screen that shows the user all the apps they’ve opened on their device and other devices that are signed in with a Microsoft account. You can see apps you’ve opened through time, open them with a single click that puts you exactly where you left off. It works across Windows 10 PCs, iOS and Android.
I believe Timeline will be another CShell element, similar to the new swipe keyboard found in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Microsoft will slowly be introducing more CShell elements over time, and Redstone 4 will see that trend continue.
Cloud Clipboard is a feature that many people are excited about, allowing you to copy text or a document and have that copied item saved to the cloud for pasting on other devices. This will be optional of course and will work across Windows 10 PC, iOS and Android too.
Fluent Design in the Windows Shell
Microsoft announced earlier this its new design language called «Fluent Design System» that will be implemented in Windows over the next several releases. We’re already seeing small bits of it show up in the Fall Creators Update, and I’m told Redstone 4 will see Fluent Design show up in the Windows Shell a lot more.
All the latest news, reviews, and guides for Windows and Xbox diehards.
My People improvements
My People in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update at best looks unfinished, and that’s because it is. I’m told My People will be getting some love in Redstone 4, with an updated design that more closely matches what Microsoft unveiled back in October last year.
The My People feature in the Fall Creators Update is only there so that developers can start working on integrating their apps with it. Its UI isn’t final, so expect to see some good things on that front.
Cortana
As always, we’re going to see Cortana get smarter with a new release of Windows 10. Abilities such as being able to set a wallpaper, find lyrics, help with shopping and a whole lot more are being worked on for Redstone 4. Microsoft is also working on a new chat-based Cortana UI, however, I’m not sure if that will be ready in time for Redstone 4. We shall see.
And more
There’s a lot more in the works for Redstone 4 from what I’m told, and of course, more things are being added to that plan all the time. Expect to see more improvements to Microsoft Edge, new Pen and Ink features and improvements, Windows upgrade improvements, and more enterprise-related features.
Improvements to the Windows Shell is what I’m most excited about with Redstone 4. Fluent Design is going to make Windows 10 look pretty, and hopefully closer resemble that of what Microsoft unveiled in its concepts.
