KQ7: XP ERROR: Windows Title Not Found This was one of my fave games. And now I can’t even get it to work! So I’m trying to run it on XP…and it’s coming up with this ‘windows title not found’ error. I first off thought it’s because I have a newer version of windows than the game intented, but I have alot earlier sierra games that run on this pc! The game installs properly, Configures the audio and graphics fine (being changed in compatability mode 256 colours) But when I run the sierraw.exe or sierraws.exe on both the disc and Help please! |

No it doesn’t help…there IS no Sierra.inf file? It is the windows version because it’s setup not install. I’ve tried both ways. I’m so nearlly over it haha. |

Positive. Not on the CD. It worked on an old PC I used to have. So the files should be fine. It’s just some XP thing? I’ve tried running it 95/98 compatability. Not happening! |

Could it be a hidden file? In Windows Explorer, look at Tools / Folder Options / View and make sure «Show hidden files and folders» is checked. I can upload a Sierra.inf file that you could try to download and put in your KQ7 directory. I don’t have time now; will do it in a couple of hours. I don’t see how you couldn’t have it. It’s a file that tells the install how to work. Unless some versions of KQ7 had a different method for installing than others. |

Okay, here is the Sierra.inf file off my KQ7 CD. You should be able to open it with Notepad. |

Nope no good =/ I did have it, it just doesn’t list as .INF It says setup information file. I’ve entered the details as of the other KQ7 Post. either way nothing is working. stupid thing. I’ve had it with it! |

Having file extensions turned on is always a benefit too. From what you’ve said, I’m guessing you have windows set to hide them (which it does by default). In Windows Explorer, look at Tools / Folder Options / View and make sure «Hide extensions for known file types» is unchecked, and your kq7.inf file should be shown as such, instead of just «kq7».

Help2 Hi, I was having many of the same problems that the guy that started this thread was having, so I thought that I would just post here to prevent clutter. I too have the Windows title not found error, and did what the link said but with no luck. I even moved it to the same directory, just in case, but still no dice. Worse yet, while the others seem to be getting something after the error, I’ve got nothing. A blank window pops up, and if I ran sierraw.exe, it simply closes again. If I ran sierraws.exe instead, it says breakpoint reached, and says it is going to close, but doesn’t until I force it to. (Send error report? NO!) I really did enjoy this game back in the day, please help. |

Thanks Jolaes. The screenshot wasn’t displaying for me, so here is a link to it. Hopefully this will be helpful to those who couldn’t get the game running with the other method. |

Качал бы с spacequest.net что ли…
На spacequest.net англицкая… -
C:\Games\SIERRA\SQ6\SIERRAW.EXE -o C:\GAMES\SIERRA\SQ6\RESOURCE.WIN
Пропустил ответ Destructor’a. Cпасибо ему -

Lebannehn Karnimirie,
sierraw.exe -o resource.win -

Hi,
I’m trying to play kings quest 7 on my laptop which has winxp. I’ve adjusted the compatability settings, but everytime i try to launch the game it say “windows title not found” and quits. I’ve alos already tried copying the sierraw.exe file from the cd to the c:\sierra folder, and changing the path in the start menu icon accordingly, but it didn’t help.
Thank you soooo much to anyone who can help me. -
What did you change the compatibility settings to? Have you tried all the different options (even NT and win2k)? Sometimes those work, for some strange reason.
Also, I’m not sure it would help with this error, but try manually setting the computer to 640×480 resolution and 256 colors before you launch the game. To do this:
Right-click desktop
Select Properties
Go to Settings tab
Click Advanced
Go to Adapter tab
Click List All Modes
Select 640×480 and 256 colors from the list, click Okay. -
You’ll need to use the sierraw.exe executable copied from the cd into your kq7 folder rather than the sierraws.exe executable that is installed by default. Also, run in 256 color compatibility mode. If you want the game to run full screen, use run it from a batch file using Multires (free from http://www.entechtaiwan.com). Here’s the batch file I use:
c:
cd multires
multires.exe /640,480,8 /exit
d:
start /w C:\SIERRA\KQ7\SIERRAW.EXE c:\SIERRA\KQ7\RESOURCE.WIN
c:
multires.exe /restore /exitwhere my cdrom drive is d:, multires in installed on c: i the “Multires” folder, and the game is in the c:\sierra\kq7 folder. If you use the batch file, do not use use XP’s own 256 color setting on the compatibility tab.

“… If you use the batch file, do not use use XP’s own 256 color setting on the compatibility tab. …”Sorry, but what does ‘compatibility tab’ mean? Is it an option to choose in the ‘installing’ KQ7 program?
I too am installing KQ7 on a WinXP machine, and thanks for your suggestions.
-
In Expoler right-click on file ‘sierraw.exe’. Select ‘Properties’ and select ‘Compatibility tab’.
-
Thanks! By the way, I already managed to run the game properly without any need to right-click and select the Property.
Again thanks for all the help!
I’m unable to repoduce what your saying. could you share your code so i can see if its that or maybe its just your computer?
It’s doing this on more than one computer in Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate.
This code, in stand-alone script with nothing else in it, fails:
Dim $gPID Dim $gErrorTrap Opt("WinTitleMatchMode", -2) $gPID = Run( "c:\program files (x86)\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe", "C:\", @SW_SHOWDEFAULT ) $gErrorTrap = WinWait( "firefox", 20 )
I don’t know what else to say. Firefox launches immediately with the Run() function. The WinWait() function never sees the window. I mean, what else is there to do/try to get it to work?
This code in a stand-alone script also fails:
Dim $gPID Dim $gErrorTrap Opt("WinTitleMatchMode", -2) $gPID = Run( "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe", "C:\", @SW_SHOWDEFAULT ) $gErrorTrap = WinWait( "explorer", 20 )
This code in a stand-alone script fails as well:
Dim $gPID Dim $gErrorTrap Opt("WinTitleMatchMode", -2) $gPID = Run( "C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe", "C:\", @SW_SHOWDEFAULT ) $gErrorTrap = WinWait( "notepad", 20 )
I’ve discovered that if I remove the «,20» it works. Or if I use:
$gErrorTrap = WinWait( «notepad», «», 20 )
Then it works.
This seems clearly a bug in AutoIt3.
[Edit: The documentation does show the timeout as being nested, as in:
WinWait ( «title» [, «text» [, timeout]] )
So it may not be a literal bug in that I’m doing something not documented. But, it should recognize the numeric value of the second parameter (instead of a text parameter) and use it as a timeout… don’t you think?]

Topic: Silence Detector not finding Windows Titles, Windows 10 (Read 12015 times)
Hi, in Silence Detector > Setup > Alarm Activation > Window Title, the «find» function returns no window titles. I have many windows open, but Silence Detector finds no — zero — titles.
Logged
It works under normal circumstances, maybe on your PC this function is blocked by some way.
Is there anybody having similar problem?
Logged
My computer is joined to an Active Directory domain . . . maybe that will block finding Titles? From the command line, «tasklist» returns running processes and their window titles.
