Task scheduler asks for password
Hi there! When I create a task and select the option ‘Run whether user is logged on or not’ it asks for an admin user and password, which I don’t know.I am the only user for my computer.

Task Scheduler Password In the past with Task scheduler I never had to do that and it worked fine but I did as you suggested and had the same result.

Task Scheduler asking for password ?
this is completely baffling.
Why should i be asked to provide a user name and password when I am already logged in as the administrator?
I tried to change certain properties of teh Macrium schedule in Task scheduler but it kept asking for login details. The properties said for it to run whether or not the user was logged in or not — screen shots below
Every time i try and change something in these screens I am asked for a username/password but apart from the fact that I think I should not be asked for these details. I cannot find the right combination that grants me access. I have tried my User account
email address and password and/or PIN but these dont work.I have come across many articles on the internet about changing properties of tasks in Task scheduler but none of them have mentioned anything about being pressed for login details.
Very curious.
I even created a dummy task in task scheduler using my user name + password but when I tried to edit the properties I was asked for login details. Why?
Is this another peculiarity of windows 10??

If so, did you also try clicking on «Change User or Group», type your user name in and click «Check Names»?
If it prompts for a password there, and you actually don’t have one, have you tried leaving it blank?
Also, just be sure that you actually don’t have a password.
Sometimes, there is actually a password that has been originally set, but it has been disabled in control userpasswords2 / netplwiz.

Running a task in the Scheduler with «Run with highest privileges» Does not request a password when the task is run. That’s a neat trick we learned years ago to run any task as Admin without needing to enter a password.

Download Windows Speedup Tool to fix errors and make PC run faster
Some PC users running Windows 11/10 might notice that Outlook and other apps won’t remember login details on reboot. In this post, we will briefly explain why you might encounter this anomaly and provide the most suitable workaround/solution you can try to successfully resolve this issue.
Windows allows credentials to be stored in the Credential Manager. The stored credentials can be used to log on to websites, connected applications, and networks. Credential Manager allows you to view and delete these credentials.
Some users have noticed that their saved logins and passwords used for authorization on websites and applications have disappeared. It was reported that when affected users re-enter and save the credentials, the situation does not change since they disappear after restarting the computer.
Based on messages from users that have appeared on the Microsoft support site, the problem affects a large number of applications, including Outlook, Lastpass, Edge, Chrome, OneDrive, as well as various VPN services.
This issue occurs when some Windows Task Scheduler Tasks are configured in a certain way. A task that appears to cause the issue is the HP Customer participation utility task.
Until a permanent fix is released by Microsoft, you can try the workaround/solutions below in no particular order.
- Disable certain tasks using Task Scheduler
- Reconnect the Microsoft Account to Windows
- Rollback to an earlier version of Windows
- Upgrade to the latest available version of Windows
Let’s look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.
1] Disable certain tasks using Task Scheduler
Do the following:
- Press Windows key + X to open Power User Menu.
- Tap A on the keyboard to launch PowerShell in admin/elevated mode.
- In the PowerShell console, ccopy and paste in the command below and hit Enter.
Get-ScheduledTask | foreach { If (([xml](Export-ScheduledTask -TaskName $_.TaskName -TaskPath $_.TaskPath)).GetElementsByTagName("LogonType").'#text' -eq "S4U") { $_.TaskName } }
If you see any Tasks listed from the PowerShell output, make a note of them.
Next, go to Windows Task Scheduler and disable any tasks you found from the above command. Here’s how:
- In the Windows Search box, type Task Scheduler and then open the Task Scheduler app.
- Locate the task in the Window (HP Customer participation), or other task from the Windows PowerShell output.
- Right-click the task and choose Disable.
- After you disable the task, restart your computer.
You may need to re-enter your missing passwords again before it is saved.
2] Reconnect the Microsoft Account to Windows
Many users have reported that reconnecting the Microsoft account to Windows could resolve the problem. To fix issues with Windows Credentials, follow these steps:
- Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Click on Accounts.
- Click on Your info on the left pane.
- Click on Sign-in with a local account instead.
- Once you’re signed in with a local account, reboot your computer.
- On boot, go back to the Accounts > Your info settings and reconnect your Microsoft account.
3 ] Rollback to an earlier version of Windows
If you’re experiencing this issue after an upgrade, it’s only practical to rollback to an earlier supported version of Windows.
4] Upgrade to the latest available version of Windows
Also, as you’re experiencing this Outlook and other apps won’t remember login details issue on Windows, you can upgrade to the latest available version of Windows.
I hope this helps!

Здравствуйте, такая ситуация, на работе есть парк win-станций + ms ad. Поступило распоряжение руководства изменить время выполнения задания в планировщике на части ПК, я начал копать schtasks, разобрался с опциями, получилась такая конструкция:
schtasks /change /s %hostname% /tn %taskname% /st 00:00

Hi,
Windows 10 Pro 64 seems to love giving me a bad time managing my «account» privileges. Weird, because my «account» is the only one my desktop have.
This time it asks me for a user password to save a simple task in Task Manager. Since I create none in the OS installation, i leave the field blank, but an error message says either I can’t do it or «a restriction policy was applied».
I am afraid of entering something and start a crazy chain reaction kafkanian-nightmarish-style in which my «account» belong to the Administrators Group, but since no account there is required to enter passwords (since they all must have «all access» privileges), Hal9000 then interprets my «account» is foreigner and it got to be banished from Shangri-la forever.
…This unusual behavior from Windows really drives me crazy.
What could be the problem?
Regards,
Pablo

DevDream,
There is no new users, my user account is the only one which is not «system-native» (I mean it was created during installation, and it’s the only one created so far).
I didn’t registered a Windows account during installation. I skipped the user/email address step.
For the test, I created and deleted a new user account. No password required.
Cheers,

Have you tried running Task Scheduler as Administrator?
Click on Start then scroll down to Windows Administrative Tools.
Right click in Task Scheduler, More … then Run as Administrator.

DevDream,
Why should I create a password? I don’t use it.
For the test: I go to the Control Panel, User Accounts, create a new administrator account and attribute a password for it. Will it grant me all the Administrators’ privileges? I ask you this because I tried something similar in another post (with Ztruker’s help, by the way), and am not sure if doing it will grant the new account all the privileges the administrators have. I think it will not, as far as I remember, because we had to do some tweaks back then.

Sounds like your problem has been solved.
Yup, neither do I (understand this OS). I find it strange that a password is required for a task , when none is present. I agree that instructions should be made clear at the very least, directing the user to create an administrator account with a password.

If the problem was solved by itself… It’s Ok.
This OS really puzzles me.
My first install, from my erased hard-disc, created 2 accounts out of nowhere. I asked Ztruker’s help by then, and was using only one acount in a system with 2. I erased the hd again, did a second install, everything fine. But the built-in games were absent (solitaire, mine field, purble place, nothing). Then a serious TILT made me erase everything to a third install. No games again. How can I bring them back?

I don’t think I can use a file recovery app, because I erased the hd with Dban. I don’t believe the app could find traces of old files there.
