As you know, Windows Server is a specialized operating system which is designed for server only. In today’s post, I will show you how to activate Windows in your VPS or dedicated server for FREE using KMS client product keys. So you can renew it whenever you want. Actually, the license will be renewed automatically every 7 days by default. In this way, just do it one time and forget it completely.
Before you begin
- If you’re using an evaluation edition of Windows Server. Let’s follow this post to convert then activate it to the licensed version.
- The methods work with Windows Server 2022/2019/2016, Windows Server version 1809, 1803, 1709. and Windows Server 2008/2012 (R2).
- KMS license is valid for 180 days only. But it will be renewed automatically before the expiration date if you are online. However, you can renew your Office manually anytime (even when its expired) by running the activation command or script again.
As you can see in the below screenshot, we’re using a copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and it is not activated. We need to activate it to made it function normally and remove the licese watermark on the desktop.
Method 1: Manual activation
The first way, we can use the Windows Command Prompt (CMD) to activate the Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter license free forever.
1️⃣ Click on the search icon, type cmd in the Windows search box, right click on the best match Command Prompt then select Run as administrator.
2️⃣ Copy, right click to paste all below commands into CMD window at once then hit Enter.
cscript //nologo %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk W3GGN-FT8W3-Y4M27-J84CP-Q3VJ9

Note: If you see the error 0xC004F074, it means that your internet connection is unstable or the server is busy. Please make sure your device is online and try the command “ato” again until you succeed.
3️⃣ Your Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter is activated using a KMS key. It’ll reactivate after every 7 days automatically. So, your Windows is permanently activated.

Tip: Why we need cscript in the commands. By just executing a vbs script file, output gets sent to dialog boxes, which need your interaction. Using cscript, the desired output gets printed to your current stdout.
4️⃣ Finally, check activation status of your Windows Server again. Open Control Panel | System and Security | System then check Windows Activation.
Method 2: Using PowerShell
The second way, we can use the Windows PowerShell to activate the Windows license. The steps are similar with using cmd method, but the commands would be changed a little bit.
1️⃣ Click on the Windows Start icon or press the Windows key on your keyboard, right click on Windows PowerShell then select Run as administrator.
2️⃣ Copy, right click to paste all below commands into CMD window at once then hit Enter.

The benefits of this method are:
- When activating with the batch script, you don’t have type the activation commands manually on each client computers.
- The script can activate all Windows client (7/8/8.1./10/11) and Windows server (2008/2008R2/2012/2012R2/2016/2019/2022) editions.
- The script can be used on either Windows 64-bit or Windows 32-bit.
- You don’t need to know which Windows edition you’re using. Script detects your Windows edition automatically then activates it.
This one is not recommended anymore due to the new update of Microsoft. In case, if you have to use the batch script, you can continue with below steps:
1️⃣ The first step is download the batch script to your computer by clicking on the below button. Our script is safe, but you should verify the security and contents of any script from the internet you are not familiar with.
2️⃣ Right click on downloaded zip file then extract it.
3️⃣ Navigate to the extracted folder. Right-click on the batch file, select Run as administrator to run the batch file with admin rights.
Windows may give you a pop-up window saying Windows protected your PC. You would receive a popup if you attempt to run or install an application that Windows doesn’t recognize. To run the script, click on the More info link then click Run anyway button.
The script will run automatically. If has no issue, you should see the below output. The Windows has been activated. You can now press any key to close the command prompt window.

The last way, we can active Windows license using a PowerShell script. The script details can be found at my GitHub. When using the PowerShell script, you can active all Windows editions (Cliens and Server editions) included: Windows 7/8/8.1/10/11 and Windows Server 2008/2008R2/2012/2016/2019/2022.
This method works similar with the batch script method, but you don’t need to download anything. And we had no pop-up window saying Windows protected your PC anymore.
Window Server 2008/2012/2016 versions are not enabling TLS 1.2 by default. So, we need to enable it first to run the script from internet directly.
[System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = 3072If the TLS 1.2 is not enabled. You would get the following error when trying to run the activation script.
Once the TLS 1.2 is enabled on the system, you can run the below PowerShell command to activate the Windows license automatically.
The script will run automatically. If has no issue, you should see the below output. The Windows Server 2012 Datacenter has been activated.

After installing and configuring Server 2012 as evaluation mode, it is often a requirement to upgrade it to full retail version. In this post, I will show steps to activate Windows Server 2012 Evaluation to full version. DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool) command line tool will be used to perform the upgrade of server from evaluation to full version.
Step 1. The very first step is to view the current edition. So open Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell in elevated mode (Run as Administrator) and type, DISM /online /Get-CurrentEditon as shown below. As you can see the current edition is Datacenter Evaluation.
Step 2. You can also view to which target edition you can upgrade. To view the possible upgrade path, type DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions on elevated command prompt as shown below. As you can see the possible upgrade option is, Datacenter edition.
Step 3. To upgrade type DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /productkey:XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /AcceptEula. X is your product key. As you can see below, it this command will upgrade the edition of Server to full version. Press Y to reboot.
You can now view the new Server edition by going into Server Manager.
In this way you can activate Windows Server Evaluation edition to full retail edition.

Сегодня я хочу рассказать о двух способах перехода с Evaluation версии Windows на полную – для серверов на базе Windows Server 2012 R2 и для клиентов Windows 8.1. Способы кардинально отличаются, — для серверных ОС переход продуман Microsoft, как простая плановая операция, для клиентских ОС задумка вендора – заставить пользователя выполнить полную переустановку системы. Предлагаемый ниже способ позволит обновить Evaluation версию Windows 8.1 до полной без переустановки, — а, впрочем, и совершить обратный переход с любой версии Windows 8.1 на Evaluation с сохранением приложений и данных, — если вдруг нужно показать себя честно использующим лишь Evaluation версии проверяющим.
Однако, начнём с простого. Первый вопрос обычно задаётся – а зачем? Дело в том, что в отличии от клиентской системы Windows 8.1 Evaluation, которая через полгода после установки лишь напоминает о своем Evaluation статусе всплывающими сообщениями и чёрным фоном рабочего стола, серверная система раз в час будет перезагружаться, что уже совсем неприятно.
Как быстро обновить Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation до полной версии.
Имею установленную систему Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation – с действительным или уже просроченным сроком пробного использования. Оказывается, в ОС есть штатная возможность повысить издание ОС, в частности с Evaluation до полной версии. Посмотреть, какое издание установлено можно при помощи команды:
DISM /online /Get-CurrentEditionДалее можно посмотреть, до каких изданий можно повысить эту ОС из командной строки:
DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions
На скриншоте видно, что у меня установлена ознакомительная версия Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard и срок пробного периода истёк. Вторая из команд показывает, что я могу поднять версию ОС до полной версии Standard или Datacenter. Для этого мне потребуется лишь ввести серийный номер, — отлично подойдёт номер со страницы TechNet — KMS Client Setup Keys. Воспользуюсь командой:
DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /AcceptEula /ProductKey:W3GGN-FT8W3-Y4M27-J84CP-Q3VJ9Данной командой я запущу процесс превращения своей ознакомительной версии Standard в полную версию DataCenter. Если бы я указал серийный номер Standard и издание ServerStandard, я бы получил полную версию Standard. После перезагрузки я вижу результат, вновь выполнив команду
DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition
Теперь я могу спокойно выполнить активацию системы на своём KMS сервере, и закончить выполнение важной задачи по обновлению сервером.
Как обновить ознакомительную версию Windows 8.1 Evaluation до полной?
Для клиентской ОС, увы, не всё так просто. Корпорация не позволяет вам просто загрузить и установить ознакомительную версию и превратить её в полную публично доступным ключём. Ознакомительная версия Windows 8.1 доступна лишь в издании Enterprise, причём русской версии нет, необходимо установить английскую и добавить русский языковой интерфейс после установки. Выполнив в Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation те же команды, что я выше выполнял в Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation я не увижу возможности сменить издание:
Следующей логичной идеей будет загрузить образ полной версии Windows 8.1 Enterprise и выполнить процесс установки «поверх» с сохранением приложений и настроек. Однако, увы, нас ожидает разочарование – Microsoft не позволяет обновить ознакомительную версию до полной с сохранением данных, нам предлагают полную переустановку:
Однако, не стоит опускать руки. Энтузиастам давно известно средство, позволяющее выполнить установку Enterprise версии поверх любой другой, будь то Evaluation, Core или Professional. Тот же способ, что работал и во времена Windows 7 для перехода с Professional на Enterprise. Скажем нашей ОС, что она уже сейчас есть полная Enterprise, и мы хотим выполнить Refresh инсталляцию с сохранением всех приложений и настроек. Откроем редактор реестра и посмотрим значение двух ключей (выделение красным моё):
Заменим EditionID и ProductName на аналогичные значения от полной версии:
Теперь без всяких перезагрузок можно снова запустить процесс обновления ОС. На сей раз нам будут доступны различные пути обновления, в том числе с сохранением приложений, файлов и настроек:
Мастер установки проходит данный шаг и начинает процесс обновления с сохранением всех настроек:
При помощи KMS сервера теперь можно активировать ОС и наслаждаться результатом:
Тот же механизм при необходимости позволит и понизить издание – с Enterprise до Professional или до Enterprise Evaluation. Надеюсь, кому-то данная информация будет полезна.
