How to get desktop icons in Windows 2008 R2.
Не пойму зачем так делать, но в Windows 2008 R2 разработчики, засунули управление иконками рабочего стола настолько далеко, что сразу и не найти. Я привык чтобы у меня на рабочем столе были иконки “Computer” “Компьютер”, “Network” “Сеть”, “Recycle Bin” “Корзина” даже на сервере – мне так удобнее. Но разработчики наверное посчитали что это серверная ОС и нечего рабочий стол засорять 🙂
Короче:
1) Самый быстрый способ добавить иконку “Computer” “Компьютер” на рабочий стол
2) Быстрый способ включить произвольные иконки рабочего стола
В строке Search набрать “show desktop icons” и в появившемся списке выбрать давно знакомую утилиту управления иконками рабочего стола.
3) Установка возможности (feature) “Desktop Experience”
После этого, при правом клике мышью на рабочем столе в меню появиться пункт “Personalize”, с помощью которого можно управлять иконками рабочего стола.
ВНИМАНИЕ! Требуется перезагрузка
Запустить Server Manager
Нужна перезагрузка. Перезагружаемся
Проверяем. Кликаем правой мышью на рабочем столе и видим
- Компьютеры
- Cancel
В Windows Server 2008 R2 зачем-то убрали возможность настройки иконок рабочего стола с интерфейса. По умолчанию на рабочем столе только иконка корзины, да и то ее можно случайно удаить 
Помните как в Windows 7? Personalise->Desktop Icons Settings.
В действительности, всё осталось, только через интерфейс не запустить этот диалог.
Ну и что.
В меню Start->run набираем control desk.cpl,,@web и вуаля, нужный элемент настройки у нас перед глазами.
ЗЫ. В Windows Server 8 абсолютно та же процедура. Только командную строку вызвать сложнее, точнее, менее привычно

Have you noticed that you cannot add the desktop icons (Computer, Network, etc.) to your Windows Server 2008 R2 desktop? Am I the only one who is annoyed by this? If not, here’s how to get them back.
First, you’ll have to go into Server Manager and access the Features section. In Features, you will select to add a feature and then select the Desktop Experience feature. Once added, you will have to reboot the server. That’s right! A reboot is required to add icons to your desktop.
Now this is really insane. Think about it. You can add your own icons for shortcuts on the desktop, but to get Computer and Network, you have to add the entire Desktop Experience feature. What a ridiculous decision Microsoft made here…
Once you’ve rebooted the server, simply right-click on the Desktop and select Personalize. From here, you can add the desktop icons you desire as usual.
Go to the Server Manager and click on the Features section. In Features, select add a feature and then select the Desktop Experience. Follow the prompts.
Once added, reboot the server.

I know it’s skirting the issue, but desktop icons aren’t exactly a major concern in Server 2008 R2, because it’s a server operating system that isn’t designed for desktop use. 99% of the time, it won’t even have a monitor attached.
Thanks for the reply, this is not a win08 as a workstation thing, the server is a Dev Server, which as has been suggested is being admin via remote desktop. The server is for testing, SQL Server and VMWare Server.

I may be missing something, i know the option is in Win2008 however i can’t find it in R2. I get the feeling that like 7, Classic is removed. I have attached some screen shots of the only two settings i can find.
P.S. Am loving the speed of R2 so far, am running SQL Server 2008 SP1 and performing some file operations.
The Remote Desktop is incredibly snappy over 2008, the file copying is faster and SQL Server 08 is more responsive. Haven’t ran any tests, but remote connecting via the SQL Server management tool is a lot faster performing various operations, shrinking databases etc…
