was being able to print to network printers.
After a bit of tinkering I found the printer and but it would not install … missing drivers.
Think that’s the end of RT for me, I’m going to check out the CloverTrail x86 devices instead.

what printer do you have? I havent tried it yet i just did the trick to get flash on all sites worked perfect works with flash on every site that i use, so far i’m thinking i need x86 less and less, fyi printer drivers should be exactly the same as pro. as far as how many they have i dont think they cut them short could be a windows 8 thing in general.

How is the network printer set up? Is it direct IP or being hosted through a print server/active directory? In your «tinkering» how were you finding and attempting to install the printer? Through Active Directory, the web interface? Please provide some additional details.

what printer do you have? According to the MS list my Canon Pixma ip4300 is compatible with Win RT, according to Canon’s support it is not, like a lot of their older usb printers. They sent me a list of compatible, incompatible printers. I have to say, Canon is correct, my printer does not work at all. So far for simple usb device compatibility…

Perhaps I’m mistaken but I don’t remember them touting network printer compatibility… They seemed more focused on USB connectivity. They always say something along the lines of «Plug it into the USB port and the drivers will be there for X number of today’s most popular printers.»How is the network printer set up? Is it direct IP or being hosted through a print server/active directory? In your «tinkering» how were you finding and attempting to install the printer? Through Active Directory, the web interface? Its an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 , its on the list of compatible printers.
It’s connected to another PC on the network.
Went to the desktop
Control Panel … Add a device … None Found
So I opened Add Printer and added it manually by browsing to the PC and then the printer icon.
Windows Printer Installation pops up, with checking Windows Update then No Driver Found and asked for the location of the inf file ?
Tried pointing it to a inf from the Win 7 driver but then it said printer can not be found.

If the compatibility page mentions a download, then chances are that it’s not going to work, since you can’t install external drivers on Windows RT. That page hasn’t been completely accurate on a lot of devices, from what I’ve seen around.

My Brother HL-2170W wireless printer is working perfectly.
Same printer here and works flawlessly. The nice surprise was how RT found it and automatically installed it during setup without me having to do anything.

Says a free download is available, but I don’t see it.
Wherever this printer is, go to it and plug into it with a USB cable.
Just tried that..
It installed it as a USB Printer (High Speed), then it said its not compatible with this version of windows.
I deleted that printer and tried to install one manaully using the USB port it did not detect it . There are a bunch of Epson drivers in RT but they all have cryptic names.

no they bragged about this at the Surface presser that WinRT works with 420k devices.
I’m assuming that was directed at my comment, and yes I know that… (though if you total up the devices on the compatibility page it amounts to just over 40,500) But I digress… Just because WinRT might work when directly connected to a printer through USB doesn’t mean that it will work if it’s connected through a network connection. That’s the point I was getting at.
Also, not all network setups or connections are equal. I’m sure printers are more likely to work when directly connected over a wireless network than they would if shared through another PC or print server. Having additional devices in between can add complexity and sometimes won’t allow the computer to «see» or communicated with the printer correctly… hence one reason that it may not find the appropriate driver, even if one is supposed to exist.
Also, just because Microsoft says something is compatible doesn’t necessarily make it so… (unfortunately) For instance, they say that the Quadro NVS 110M GPU is compatible with Windows 8 but I haven’t for the life of me been able to get it to work in either x64 or x86 environments on a Latitude D820. The website says it’s compatible. When I ran the upgrade compatibility scanner from within Win7 x64 it said it was compatible. But when actually installing Win8 on the laptop, it won’t install anything more than the generic Windows Driver. So the lists aren’t always 100% accurate.

Windows 10 automatically installed a compatible (in-box) driver for my printer. How do I update the printer driver?
You can install a driver if one is available from the Drivers & Downloads page for your product.
I connected the printer to my computer or tablet using Windows 10. The printer driver settings are very limited. What should I do?
Windows 10 installed a compatible (in-box) driver for your product, thus maybe because an official Epson driver is not available for Windows 10.
Check Epson and Windows 10 to see if a new driver is available for your product.
Epson Scan does not launch since I upgraded to Windows 10. From Windows 7 or 8/8.1 What should I do?
You need to uninstall Epson Scan then re-install the software again.
Once re-installed:
- If your product is connected to your computer or tablet with a USB connection. Try scanning again. If you are still unable to scan, refer to Troubleshooting Printer-related Communication Issues in Windows
- If your product is connected to your computer or tablet with a wired or wireless network connection, follow the instructions in the Configure Epson Scan for a Network Connection section.

- Click or tap the Start Button.
- Click or tap All Apps then click or tap Epson then click or tap EPSON Scan Settings.

EPSON E-Web Print does not work since I upgraded to Windows 10. Why does this happen?
EPSON E-Web Print is not supported in by the default web browser in Windows 10, Microsoft Edge. But may be supported in other web browsers.

The «More Settings» window doesn’t close when I click OK from a Windows Store app. What should I do?
This may happen if you select a Duplex printing setting. To use the setting, you may also need to select the Collation setting. Do the following:

Open the App’s Print screen, then click or tap More Settings.
- Select Duplex Printing and Collation settings, then click or tap OK.
To check for a driver update that may fix this limitation, check the Support and Downloads page for your product.
After I upgrade to Windows 10, my User-Defined document sizes, Printing Presets, or Watermark settings are missing in the Epson driver. What should I do?
You need to create the settings again. During the upgrade, Windows 10 uninstalled and reinstalled your printer software and the settings were lost during the process.

В результате при переходе с Windows 7 на Windows 10 пользователи обнаруживают, что драйвер принтера, который нормально работал в Windows 7, оказался несовместим с Windows 10. Не выкидывать же из-за это принтер на свалку? В этой статье мы расскажем, как установить в Windows 10 неподдерживаемый драйвер печати от предыдущей версии Windows.
Совет. Перед установкой несовместимого драйвера печати настоятельно рекомендуем поискать на сайте производителя обновленную версию драйвера печати с поддержкой Windows 10. Также попробуйте использовать универсальный драйвер печати от вашего производителя, они обычно поддерживают большое количество оборудования (HP Universal Print Driver, Samsung Universal Print Driver и т.д.).
В качестве примера мы установим драйвер от Windows 7 для довольно старого принтера HP 1125.
- Подключите принтер к компьютеру (через USB, LPT !!, или убедитесь, что принтер доступен по сети).
- Если вы раньше уже пытались установить старую версию драйвера принтера и с ним принтер не печатает, обязательно удалите старый драйвер перед его установкой в режиме совместимости. Удалить драйвер принтера можно в разделе Панель управления -> Устройства и принтеры -> Выберите секцию принтеры и верхнем меню нажмите на «Свойства сервера печати». Перейдите на вкладку «Драйверы», выберите драйвер принтера и нажмите «Удалить». Также удалите программы, которые могли установиться при установке драйвера.
- Щелкните правой кнопкой по установочному файлу с драйвером и выберите «Исправление проблем с совместимостью».
- Выберите пункт «Диагностика программы».
- Отметьте опцию «Программ работала в предыдущих версиях Windows, но не устанавливается или не запускается сейчас» и нажмите Далее.
- Выберите что эта программ раньше работала в Windows 7.
- Нажмите на кнопку Проверить программу
- Программа запросит разрешения на установку.
- Установите программу.
- После окончания установки драйвера убедитесь, что в системе появился новый принтер.
Совет. В Windows 10 x64 запрещена установка неподписанных драйверов. Поэтому если драйвер принтера не подписан, или имеет некорректную цифровую подпись, вам придется самому подписать этот драйвер или загружать Windows 10 в режиме с отключённой проверкой цифровой подписи.
Если у вас отсутствует установочный файл для драйвера принтера, а только набор INF, CAB и DLL файлов:
- Установите драйвер, щелкнув правой кнопкой по INF файлу драйвера и выберите «Установить».
- В панели управления запустите мастер установки нового принтера. После окончания автоматического поиска выберите опцию «Необходимый принтер отсутствует в списке».
- В мастере установки принтера выберите опцию «Мой принтер довольно старый. Мне нужно помощь, чтобы найти его».
- Дождитесь, пока мастер не найдет подключенный принтер (убедитесь, что кабель принтера надежно подключен к компьютеру).
- Выберите принтер, драйвер и попробуйте распечатать тестовую страницу.
Теперь вы можете использовать свой старый принтер (можно даже открыть к нему общий доступ) несмотря на то, что его драйвер официально не поддерживается Windows 10.
