Connect to a remote PC from your Windows 10 phone

Last year, Microsoft introduced a new universal ‘Remote Desktop’ app that works across all Windows 10 devices and allows you to connect to a remote PC from anywhere on the go. The best thing is that the Remote Desktop app works perfectly on Windows 10 Mobile and it even supports Continuum, which means you can access a remote PC from the phone while connected to a mouse, keyboard and a monitor in Continuum-mode.

Here is how you can set up the Remote Desktop app in Windows 10 Mobile (and Windows 10):

1. Allow remote access to your computer

The feature is disabled by default. Type ‘allow remote‘ in the search bar.

Remote connection

System Properties will open to the Remote tab. Select ‘Allow remote connections to this PC’ and tick the box to enable connections only from PCs running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication.

2. Find your IP Address

ipconfig

Type ‘cmd‘ in the Windows/Cortana search bar to start the ‘Command Prompt’. Now type ‘ipconfig‘ and press Enter. You will see the IP address on the screen. In this case: 192.168.0.100

3. Install the Remote Desktop app

Microsoft has two Remote Desktop apps for Windows 10 – an official version and a preview with all latest features available for testing before the global public roll out.

4. Open the app on your Windows 10 smartphone

Tap ‘Add’ and click on ‘Desktop’ to connect to your PC. Type the IP address instead of the PC name and tap ‘Save’. Click on the new connection you’ve just created, enter your PC’s log-in credentials – user name and password – select ‘Remember me’ and tap ‘Connect’.

Windows:
• ОС (Pro or Enterprise) с Windows Client: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista;
• ОС Windows Server: Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003.

Приложение использует протокол Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 8.1 и поддерживает технологию RemoteFX, а также протокол безопасности Network Layer Authentication.

Google Play.

Microsoft recently launched the Remote Desktop app for Windows Phone 8.1. It’s free and allows you to connect your phone to a remote PC over a local network or from the internet. Although it’s a pre-release version and doesn’t include certain functionality that you would expect from a remote desktop app from your computer, it’s still handy for a lot of situations. Here’s a look at how to set up your computer to receive remote connections, and how to use your phone for remote desktop.

For this article I tested the app over my local network and connected to one of my servers and a couple of Windows 7 and 8.1 computers. For connecting to computers at your workplace, you’ll have a problem getting past the gateway as the app doesn’t currently support connecting through Remote Desktop Gateway or Remote Desktop Connection Broker. However, according to Microsoft execs: «Enterprise-focused enhancements such as the Remote Desktop Gateway and RD Connection Broker, VPN support, and Remote Resources,» are planned for later this year. These are important features to be added since Android and iOS already support them.

Set computer to accept remote connections

By default, Windows computers have the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) disabled. You’ll need to enable it on the computer(s) you want to connect to. It’s a simple process. Right-click Computer or This PC (as it’s called in Windows 8.1) and select Properties. At the top left of the resulting screen click Remote settings from the list. This will open System Properties to the Remote tab. Under Remote Desktop, check Allow remote connections to this computer. On Windows 8.1 it’s also recommended to click the box to allow connection from computers with Network Level Authentication for an additional level of security.

Note that accepting remote desktop connections isn’t a feature included with Home versions of Windows 7, Vista or Windows 8. The computer you’re connecting to will need to be running a Professional version or higher – Windows 7 Ultimate, for example.

Connect from Windows Phone 8.1

Now on your phone download the Remote Desktop app to your Windows Phone. Then, to connect to a computer tap the plus icon at the bottom of the screen. Then you’ll need to enter in the host name or IP address of the computer you want to connect to. Here you can also select whether you want to enter in your login credentials each time, or you can to save your username and password for different computers, which makes connecting to them again in the future much easier.

After you have a few computers set up, you just need to tap on the one you need to remote into. The first time you connect to a PC or server, you’ll see a message about not being able to verify the remote computer’s certificate, as shown in the screenshot below. If you’re remotely connecting into a computer from you’re phone, I will assume you know you’re connecting to the correct one. I recommend checking the option to not show that screen every time.

Select don't ask again for this certificate

After the connection is made your phone’s display moves to landscape view and you’ll see the desktop of that computer. In the example below I am connected to my Windows Home Server.

In the top toolbar you’ll see a magnifier icon, the remote computer’s name, and the keyboard icon. Taping the keyboard icon will display the onscreen keyboard. As you can see in the shot below, the keyboard will take up most of the screen real estate. The top row of keys – Windows, ALT, ESC, etc., are «sticky,» meaning you’ll need to tap it once to turn it on, and again to deactivate it.

Type on the remote computer via the onscreen keyboard

The magnifier button allows you to zoom in on the screen. This is handy when you need to hit small targets like in Outlook or, depending your phone’s screen size, being able to read text. You’ll also notice a directional button that will appear to let you to drag the screen around in any direction.

Tap the middle of the top toolbar and a sidebar will pop up where you can enable the mouse pointer.

Tap the top bar in the middle to activate the mouse pointer

When you’re ready to disconnect from the remote computer, just hit the physical back button on the phone twice.

Summing up

As I stated at the beginning, the Remote Desktop app for Windows Phone 8.1 is still in development and there are some glaring omissions of important features like Remote Desktop Gateway, RD Connection Broker and pinch and zoom to make navigating the screen easier. After these features are rolled out later this year, the app will be more complete and useful in corporate environments. While not everything is working perfectly yet, I expect continuous development and a better experience as it’s updated over time.

You’re probably not going to get a lot of productive computing done from your phone’s small screen like you would on a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, but it can get the job done, and works in a pinch when you need to remotely access different computers while on the go.

How To Remote Desktop To Your PC From Windows Phone

There are times where you want or need to access your Windows PC from afar.  It isn’t often mind you unless you are doing remote support or the like but sometimes you need to find that file you left on your PC desktop instead of uploading to OneDrive.  After all, if you had it in OneDrive, you could easily access it from your Windows Phone.

Microsoft makes a Remote Desktop app for Windows Phone and it works flawlessly for just such a need.  The app is a free download but there is a little bit of configuration you need to do in order for you to be able to access your Windows PC from your Windows Phone.  The good thing though is that once you have it set up you will be good-to-go from that point forward.  I’m going to divide this How To into two parts.  The first part will cover what you need to do on your Windows PC and the second what you need to do on your Windows Phone.

Windows PC

The first thing we need to discuss is the IP address or host name of your Windows PC.  Doing a Remote Desktop to your PC will require you to know one or both of these.  If you are accessing your PC from within the same network (same WiFi network as an example), then all you need to know is your computer’s name.  If your PC is part of a domain then you will likely need the full domain name such as computer.domain.com.  This will vary depending on how your domain is configured and you may need to contact your administrator for exact instructions on how to do this.

If you are accessing your Windows PC from a different network, the game gets a bit more interesting.  First, you have to make sure that you have access to do a remote desktop session which may or may not be allowed.  Second, if you are accessing your PC at home from afar, you will need to know the public IP address that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has assigned to you.  It is also likely that that address changes from time-to-time.  As a general rule it is easier to access your PC from within the same network than it is from outside it.

For the rest of this How To I am going to assume you have the network element sorted out.

The next thing you will need to do is configure your Windows PC to allow for Remote Desktop sessions.  In Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, go

Control Panel Allow Remote Access

to Control Panel and go to System and Security.  Towards the middle of the screen you will see the option to allow remote access to your computer.  Click this radio button to enable it.  When you do this, a details pane will open.

First, you need to click the radio button to allow “remote connections to this computer”.  This effectively turns the feature on for your Windows PC.  Secondly, you will need to click the Select Users button to select which users on your domain or users on your PC that you want to grant this access to on your PC.  By default your login account will have access but you can add others by typing in their domain user name or their local PC user name.  If

Control Panel Allow Remote Desktop

you use your Microsoft ID to log into your Windows PC, that too will be enabled by default and will be your credentials to Remote Desktop to your PC.

When you are done you can close Control Panel on your Windows PC.

Windows Phone

The configuration of your Windows Phone for Remote Desktop is super easy as it is all driven from the Remote Desktop app.  That app is free.

Remote Desktop for Windows Phone – Free – Download Now

Once you have the app installed, open it and tap the + icon at the bottom to add a new PC to the configuration.  Remember that computer name or IP address you needed earlier?  This is where you put it into your Windows Phone.  If you are on

Computer Name Entry for a Remote Desktop Session

the same network this is generally just the computer name or if you are on a domain it is computer.domain.com.  Again, if you are doing this from within your work network, ask your administrator for help.

Once you have a PC added you will see it in the list of computers that you have configured.  Tap it to bring up the login credentials page.  Here you put in your username and password to access your Windows PC.  This will be either your default login for your PC (which could be your Microsoft account) and password or it will be the user you have granted access to do a remote desktop session on your PC.  Once the credentials are entered, tap connect to connect to your Windows PC.

My PC from my Windows Phone

At this point you should see your Windows PC on your Windows Phone.  You can tap the keyboard at the top of the screen to bring up the keyboard along with other keyboard commands such as the Windows button so you can easily navigate around on your PC from your Windows Phone.  When you are done simply close the Remote Desktop app on your Windows Phone and the connection to your PC will be terminated.

I can’t stress enough that in order to do this How To you will need to have some basic working knowledge of computer networks.  While the Remote Desktop app for Windows Phone does make it very easy, it is the initial configuration of your PC that catches people out.  Also, if you are accessing your PC remotely, your ISP or work network may not allow that to happen through their firewalls and other security mechanisms.
