The Windows Phone SDK 8.0 is a full-featured development environment to use for building apps and games for Windows Phone 8.0 and Windows Phone 7.5. The Windows Phone SDK provides a stand-alone Visual Studio Express 2012 edition for Windows Phone or works as an add-in to Visual Studio 2012 Professional, Premium or Ultimate editions. With the SDK, you can use your existing programming skills and code to build managed or native code apps. In addition, the SDK includes multiple emulators and additional tools for profiling and testing your Windows Phone app under real-world conditions.

If your computer meets the hardware and operating system requirements, but does not meet the requirements for the Windows Phone 8 Emulator, the Windows Phone SDK 8.0 will install and run. However, the Windows Phone 8 Emulator will not function and you will not be able to deploy or test apps on the Windows Phone 8 Emulator.

Installing the Windows Phone SDK
- Choose the language version you want to install and click the Download button for the WPexpress_full.exe file. Follow the instructions to install the SDK. Note that each localized version of Windows Phone SDK 8.0 is designed to function with the corresponding localized operating system and localized version of Visual Studio 2012.
Note — Windows Phone SDK 8.0 installs side-by-side with previous versions of the Windows Phone SDK. You don’t need to uninstall previous versions before beginning this installation. - Download the release notes which are in a separate file. - Important Installation Notes/Warnings
- When installing the WPSDK 8.0 on a computer with a Gigabyte motherboard and the USB 3.0 host controller enabled in the BIOS, the computer might stop responding when it boots. For details on impacted Gigabyte motherboad models, see Installing Hyper-V on Gigabyte systems. To resolve this, disable USB 3.0 support in computer’s BIOS.
- When installing the WPSDK 8.0 on Windows 8.1, the Windows Phone 8 emulator does not work on Windows 8.1. To fix the emulator, install Visual Studio 2012 Update 3 after installing the Windows Phone SDK 8.0.
Using the Windows Phone SDK
- If you have Visual Studio Professional, Premium or Ultimate installed on the computer, the Windows Phone SDK will install everything you need into your existing installation. Start your Visual Studio instance as usual and use it to create your Windows Phone 8.0 apps using the installed Windows Phone templates.
- Otherwise, the Windows Phone SDK will install and create a shortcut for Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone, you can click the application in the Apps list to launch it and create your Windows Phone 8.0 app.
- If you try to run a project in Windows Phone Emulator and Hyper-V is not enabled, you will be prompted to turn on Hyper-V. Turning on Hyper-V requires you to restart your computer.
Note: this release is also available in .iso format.
Choose one of the following options for handling downloaded ISO images:- (Recommended) Write the image file to a blank DVD.
- (Alternative) Mount the image file virtually as DVD devices.

This section explains how to download and install the Windows Phone Developer Tools, a development environment necessary for developing games with XNA. This tool includes a Windows Phone development environment and a complete set of XNA Game Studios.

Installation Notes
(Modified from 2010/11/22)—
If you install using this tool, Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, XNA Game Studio 4.0, and Expression Blend 4 with Windows Phone Extension will be installed, but the Japanese version of Expression Blend 4 will be installed. If Expression Belnd 4 is installed, the installation always fails. However, Visual Studio itself can be installed successfully, so if you don’t want to use Expression Blend 4, you can leave it as is.
If you want to use both Japanese and Visual Studio versions of Expression Blend 4, you can install them by following the steps below. (It is assumed that you have the Japanese version of Expression Blend 4 separately.) If you don’t have one, you can use the English version as it is.)
- Install the Windows Phone Developer Tools
- Uninstall the English version of Expression Blend 4 that was installed at the same time (anything that is named Blend, such as the SDK)
- Install the Japanese version of Expression Blend 4
- Download and install Microsoft Expression Blend 4 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Maybe «Install Expression Blend 4 Japanese» ⇒ «Install Windows Phone Developer Tools (this will cause a Blend installation error)» ⇒ «Install Microsoft Expression Blend 4 Service Pack 1 (SP1)» might work, but I haven’t tried it.
Conversely, if you want to use Expression Blend with Windows Phone extensions, uninstall the Japanese version of Expression Blend 4 (SDK and anything else named Blend ), and then open Expression Blend 4 in the Windows Phone Developer Tools Please install the . However, in this case, Expression Blend works as the English version.

Download Windows Phone Developer Tools
The Windows Phone Developer Tools are available as a free download from the Microsoft site. Download it from one of the links below. (The download destination seems to change frequently, so please look for it and download it yourself.)

- Visual Studio Express and SQL Server Express (click the link for Windows Phone Developer Tools and change «Select language» to English)
The installer file will be downloaded, so save it or run it as it is.
Installing the Windows Phone Developer Tools
Once you have downloaded and saved the file, run the «wm_web.exe» file to launch it.
The installer will be launched, and after waiting for a while, the «License Agreement» screen will be displayed, so read the license terms carefully and click the «Accept» button if you can accept it.
When you get to the «Welcome to Setup» screen, click the «Install Now» button to start the installation.
If you want to change the installation folder, click the «Customize» button.
After a while, when the installation is complete, you will see a screen similar to the one shown in the figure.
Click the Run the Product Now button to launch Visual Studio. If you want to exit the installer once, click the «Exit» button.
If you open the Start menu, you’ll see that XNA Game Studio 4.0-related menus have been added.
To develop games in XNA Game Studio, choose Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express > Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone from the Start menu.
By the way, if you’re using a higher version of Visual Studio 2010, you can create one there. The Japanese version is also OK.
When you open Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Visual Studio opens as shown.
Register your product
If you don’t register your free Express Edition, you will only be able to use it for 30 days, so don’t forget to register your product.
From the Help menu, click Regist Product.
Click the Obtain a registration key online button.
A web browser opens and you are redirected to the product registration screen.
To register your product, you must have a Windows Live ID. If you have already registered, sign in from the red frame in the figure.
If you don’t have an account yet, click the «Sign up now» button on the left to get one. (You can use the same account as Japanese, so it is easier to register on the Japanese page)
Register your personal information and enter the questionnaire. If you already have a Windows Live account, it may have already been entered.
After entering the required items, click the «Continue» button.
You will see the «Registration Key» in the center. Please copy or write this down. Even if you delete it by mistake, it will be sent to the email address registered with Windows Live, so you can check it there.
Enter the «Registration Key» you just obtained and click the «Register Now» button. This completes the registration.
If you see «Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone is already registered» when you open the product registration again, you are registered.

Over the past two weeks Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone Developer Tools were finalized. The Tools have been made available at no cost to developers to build apps and games for Windows Phone 7 operating system that will be available in Stores by this Christmas.
The final version of Windows Phone Developers Tools are being offered as web installer, that requires internet connection to download bootstrapper. And for few folks, it could be a trouble to get it on low-bandwidth connection. But Just like a beta release, an offline ISO image of tools has been made available that can be burned to a CD and installed Offline.
The Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta includes the following:
- Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone
- Windows Phone Emulator
- Silverlight for Windows Phone
- Microsoft Expression Blend for Windows Phone
- XNA Game Studio 4.0
System Requirements
- Windows Vista (x86 and x64) with Service Pack 2 – all editions except Starter Edition Or
- Windows 7 (x86 and x64) – all editions except Starter Edition
- Installation requires 3 GB of free disk space on the system drive.

- Windows Phone Emulator requires a DirectX 10 capable graphics card with a WDDM 1.1 driver
The Windows Phone Developer Tools is compatible with the final version of Visual Studio 2010. The web installer is still available and can be opted the most appropriate for you.

Besides new Windows Phone Training Kit (RTM Refresh) is also available for developers. It has total 12 labs including 5 new labs therefore so the size of kit may seem bigger. But you have few options to choose a local copy of any or all of these Kit modules:
