Windows Phone 8 Update 3, formerly known as General Distribution Release 3 (GDR3), is the third and final OS update for the Windows Phone 8.0 operating system before Windows Phone 8.1.
The update has been released-to-manufacturers in September 2013 and a developer-preview version was released on October, 14th 2013. The update is meant to add new features to current devices, in addition to allowing 1080P displays and quad-core processor support (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800) for new hardware.
Update 3 will launch on with the Nokia Lumia 1520 in early November and current Windows Phone 8 devices will receive the update in the coming months. In addition to the OS update, Nokia devices will also receive the Lumia Black firmware update.

Итак, в Windows Phone 8 GDR3 нас ждет:
- Поддержка Full HD разрешения (первый смартфон с ним — Nokia Lumia 1520);
- Поддержка новых процессоров (в том числе мощных Qualcomm Snapdragon 800);
- В каждом ряду может быть 2 средних или 6 маленьких плиток — касается смартфонов с разрешением 1280 х 768 пикселей и выше (в том числе Lumia 920/925/1020);
- Можно закрывать работающие в фоне приложения в диспетчере, нажав на крестик в правом верхнем углу;
- Различные мелодии уведомлений для текстовых сообщений, сообщений мессенджеров, e-mail и напоминалок;
- Возможность фиксации ориентации экрана;
- Режим вождения (Driving Mode): отключаются все уведомления, кроме входящих вызовов и SMS-сообщений. Кроме этого, можно заблокировать и входящие вызовы и SMS-сообщения с автоматической отправкой сообщения, вроде «Я за рулем, перезвоню/отвечу позже». Режим может включаться автоматически при подключении смартфона к Bluetooth автомобиля;
- Возможность резервного восстановления данных по Wi-Fi;
- Возможность присоединить документы Office (.doc, .xls, .ppt) и pdf-файлы к письмам.
Nokia Bittersweet shimmer — надстройка Nokia для смартфонов Lumia (аналогично Nokia Amber для Windows Phone 8 GDR2) — включает в себя следующие новшества:
- На экране заставки (Glance Screen) появятся уведомления о пропущенных событиях (аналогичные тем, которые сейчас видны на экране блокировки). Теперь можно выбрать один из 20 цветов для них (на данный момент есть только красный). Кроме этого, появилась возможность отключать Glance Screen во время зарядки смартфона.

Как уже известно, Microsoft открыли доступ к предварительной версии обновления GDR3 или Update 3 для Windows Phone 8. В этом посте я расскажу вам, как поставить этот апдейт на ваш смартфон. Для установки превью-версии Windows Phone 8 update 3 вам понадобится разблокированный «девелоперский» смартфон. Стать таковым может любой смартфон на Windows Phone 8. Для среднестатистического пользователя вполне хватит анлока от Windows Phone App Studio. Зарегистрируйтесь там под тем же Microsoft Account на который активирован ваш смартфон и анлок у вас в кармане 
Теперь осталось дело за малым — пройти со смартфона по этой ссылке и установить приложение Preview for Developers. Затем, запустив приложение, согласитесь лицензией и переходом на превью-канал обновлений.
В завершении проверьте обновления Windows Phone стандартным образом и поставьте обновления, которые будут найдены. После установки обновления у вас на смартфоне будет Windows Phone 8 Update 3. И в дальнейшем, пока вы не отключите это в настройках приложения, которое вы поставили из Windows Phone Store, вы будете получать превью-версии обновлений Windows Phone.
В завершении несколько ремарок. Получение обновления от MS не означает получение обновления от Nokia (Bittersweet shimmer). Апдейт от Nokia будет получен при выходе финальной версии Update 3. Так же нет возможности откатить установленное превью на стабильную версию. Можно лишь отключить дальнейшее получение предварительных обновлений. Однако, вы получите стабильное обновление Update 3 и обновление от Nokia по мере выхода апдейта со стороны Nokia для вашего продакт-кода.
Microsoft is now allowing Windows Phone Developers to update their Windows Phone device from the previous GDR2 to GDR3 Preview. But the good thing is that the availability is not limited to registered developers only, instead practically anyone who is willing and has the latest GDR2 update installed on their phones can update to the GDR3 Preview.

How to Update any WP8 phone to GDR3 Preview
Before you proceed
GDR3 Preview is a preview actually meant for developers and normal enthusiasts. As expected, it will come straight from Microsoft and won’t include any OEM Level improvements. In short, this is not the Lumia Black update and hence, don’t expect those features to be enabled on your phones with this update.
Installing the preview will also put you out of the OEM Releases, however you can switch back to that anytime you want.
- Click Here, scroll down and Press “Start Building”, and then the Sign Up window will appear. You just have to Log In with your Microsoft account which is linked to your WP device.
- Check again whether your device is Updated to the Latest OS release.
- Download ‘Preview for Developers’ app in your device. ( QR Code at the end of article).
- Then open the App and Sign In with your Microsoft account which you have registered before, and accept all the Terms & Conditions.
- You are almost ready. Go to Settings> Phone Updates> Check for updates.
- Now follow the update procedure (you surely are aware of it) and complete the Update.
Done. 😎 . Your device is now updated with GDR3 Preview. Enjoy.

Finally, some movement in Windows Phone Dev centre at Microsoft and some big-big news is on the way. Windows Phone Blog has just shared details of the third update which according to them will come in few months. Here are the details :
Major Enhancements
- 1080p Support: This is not new as we been hearing this rumor since Nokia’s devices like 1520 and 2520 leaked. with this, you will have more space on your screen with room for 6 live tiles which is set to 4 now. This creates enough room on a 6 inch screens.
- Snapdragon 800 Quad Core: This processor has already proved itself for longer battery life and better performance. Good to see Microsoft finally changing their approach of picking up latest hardware.
- Driving Mode: This mode will make sure that you receive calls and SMS from only numbers which are important while you are driving. Automatic reply supported.
- Accessibility features: Suite of apps to make it easier for you or anybody who needs a bit of help. This includes screen reader for managing calls, emails, Skype, notifications and so on.
- Improved Internet Sharing: You will be able to share Internet from your mobile to Windows 8.1 or tablet over Bluetooth.
Other Small Improvements:
- Set ringtones for messages, emails, voicemail and reminders.
- Screen Rotation Lock : Finally!!
- Better storage management to help you figure out what is taking space.
- Close Apps using the App Switcher AKA the back key.
- WiFi Setup possible during Initial setup of the phone.
- More options for Bluetooth accessories.
No complains here but it seems that the notification centre wont make it unless the Blue Update comes to Windows wherein there will be some major sharing between Windows Phone and Windows 8.1. Lets hope the updates are coming ASAP and its coming to all devices.

That said, Microsoft is also opening up their Windows Phone Preview for Developers to get early access to new OS update and test their apps accordingly. To download Windows Phone 8 Update 3, you need to meet one of three conditions: your phone is “developer-unlocked,” you’re a registered Windows Phone Store developer, or you’re a registered Windows Phone App Studio developer.
