Hi guys,

I’m new to this forum (and at work) so i’m going to make my post short, i’m limited to where I may post, so if you feel this thread needs to be moved then please do so without hesitation .

I have been looking around since the HD7 ROM was taken down , and i have found more ROM’s.
One for HTC Titan, Nokia Lumia 720 and another for Omnia7.

I have not tested these 7.8 ROM’s personally so use them at your own risk, I thought i’d share it for those who want to try out the new Update.

As expected though, some apps don’t work with all tile sizes.

More info on both ROM’s can be found in the following Threads:

Omnia 7: winphoneviet. com/forum/showthread.php?t=15305
HTC Titan: winphoneviet. com/forum/showthread.php?t=12350
Nokia Lumia 720 winphoneviet .com/forum/showthread.php?t=15264

Note: Remove the space in the URL’s as i cannot post external links yet.

Enjoy and Kudos to the guys at WPViet :good:

Hi
this is great news
I hope you will all languages, and the current problems are improving

If anyone could please host the Omnia 7 ROM I would be very happy… and perhaps some more info about the ROM itself? The site does not display in English…

At the moment , the guys at WPViet have not yet released one. I have no idea if they have plans to create such a ROM but at the rate they seem to be updating and releasing these 7.8 ROMs it seems likely.

hello

just for info…
i have flashed OMNIA 7 rom yesterday.
it’s fully unlocked
working ok for now
basically 7.5 rom with new start screen (wich i like as it’s nicer)

no lags, responsive like 7.5, calling works ok
found one feature i didn’t have or notice in 7.5 — when calling…it vibrates when other party picks up the phone, so you don’t have to watch screen or hear when they answer, great feature…

overall seems ok for now!!!

cool, vibration on call is a must feature that wp7.5 (and me) miss

what about the marketplace/store apps? can you install reinstall run etc them?
what about wp root tools?
are gps, localization, wifi, bt and other sensors working?

sorry for a bunch of questions… but you are a real pioneer!

Thanks for posting some feedback, good to know that their Omnia ROM is running stable. I’ve got a Lumia 800, so I couldn’t test these ROMs my self.

It only has en-us display language, the keyboard languages are all(?) there.

Flashed one hour ago, currently on the process of configuration and installation of my apps. So far so good.

Edit: Omnia 7.

Unfortunately I am relatively new to the windows phone platform so i am unaware of the technicalities behind restoring from a backup and adding languages to this rom. None the less AFAIK as long as you do not erase your boot loader and can reach download mode once more after flashing to 7.8 then yes you should as per usual be able to restore 7.5 , and according to some of the WPViet posts, depending on the ROM some do support Cab updates so theoretically you can add them like that.

Edit: It appears, that you can install other languages however it breaks some applications.

If any info I’ve posted is incorrect, please assist.

Galaxy Ace Custom ROM with Windows Phone 7 UI: A Comprehensive Guide

In the ever-evolving landscape of mobile technology, customization has emerged as one of the most sought-after features among smartphone users. With devices becoming increasingly modular and open-source, enthusiasts look for ways to personalize their experiences and harness the potential of their hardware. One compelling opportunity lies in the installation of custom ROMs. Among the myriad of options available, a setup featuring the Windows Phone 7 UI on the Samsung Galaxy Ace stands out. This article aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of this intriguing modification, its implications, and a step-by-step guide for installation.

Understanding Custom ROMs

A custom ROM is a third-party firmware that users can install on their Android devices, transforming the stock system software. ROM stands for “Read-Only Memory,” although theterm often refers to the software image itself. By installing a custom ROM, users can access enhancements that speed up their device, improve battery life, remove unwanted software, or change the user interface entirely.

The Android operating system is based on Linux, giving developers the flexibility to build upon it, leading to numerous custom ROMs designed for different specifications and aesthetic preferences. From those looking for a pure Android experience to others wishing for a more heavily modified UI, custom ROMs cater to a wide variety of demands.

Implications of Installing a Custom ROM

Before diving into the installation process of a custom ROM, it is essential to understand the implications of modifying your device’s software:

  1. Voiding Warranty: Installing a custom ROM on your device typically voids the manufacturer’s warranty. This should be enough to make users cautious, especially if they encounter issues down the road.

  2. Potential for Bricking: If the installation process goes awry, there is a risk of “bricking” the device—rendering it non-operational. Most custom ROMs come with their own set of instructions and requirements to mitigate risks, but absolute care is necessary.

  3. Improved Performance: Many custom ROMs are optimized for performance, leading to a snappier experience. They often come with pre-installed utilities that can help you manage system resources better than stock firmware.

  4. Enhanced Features: Custom ROMs frequently include features that are absent from the stock Android experience, including ad-blockers, customization options, and extended settings for advanced users.

  5. Security Updates: While stock ROMs can receive regular updates from manufacturers, custom ROMs often have dedicated communities that update their builds, offering enhancements in security when the device can no longer receive official support.

The Charm of the Windows Phone 7 UI

The Windows Phone 7 UI, previously associated with Microsoft’s now-defunct mobile operating system, is distinguished by its live tiles, minimalistic design, and intuitive navigation. The tiled interface is attractive to users who appreciate a simpler and more organized layout. Below are some features that make this UI particularly alluring:

  • Live Tiles: The home screen is dynamic, featuring colorful tiles that represent apps and information. These tiles update in real time, reflecting notifications and relevant updates directly.

  • Metro Design Language: The clean and bold typography, as well as the spacious layout, sets the Windows Phone 7 UI apart from its competitors. This design ethos emphasizes user experience.

  • Efficiency: The UI is designed to minimize the number of taps it takes to reach an app or information, providing a more efficient user experience.

  • Social Integration: With seamless integration of social media apps, users can easily interact and share updates from their home screens.

The combination of these factors lends a level of nostalgia and functionality to the Windows Phone 7 UI that many users find appealing.

Why Install Windows Phone 7 UI on Galaxy Ace?

The Samsung Galaxy Ace, although launched in 2011, was a popular budget smartphone. However, as newer models emerged and Android evolved, the Galaxy Ace became outdated in terms of software performance and features. By installing a custom ROM with the Windows Phone 7 UI, users can give this device a new lease on life. Here are several reasons why this might be an enticing venture:

  1. Breathable Life into Old Hardware: With optimized performance features, a custom ROM can resurrect the aging Galaxy Ace, making it usable for social media browsing, music streaming, or as a secondary device.

  2. Unique Look and Feel: Modding with the Windows Phone 7 UI can provide a distinctive aesthetic that stands out in a world mostly dominated by Android’s default UI customizations.

  3. Learning Experience: For tech enthusiasts, the process of installing a custom ROM is a learning adventure, providing insight into mobile operating systems and the potential they hold for modification.

  4. Community Support: Installing a popular custom ROM often brings the benefit of an active community that offers support and updates, should any issues arise.

Preparing for the Installation

Prior to starting the process, taking a few preparatory steps is crucial for a smooth installation:

  1. Backup Important Data: Always back up your data before proceeding to install a new ROM. Recovery options like TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) can be used for this process.

  2. Download Necessary Files: Gathering the required files for a successful installation includes the custom ROM file itself, compatible Google Apps (GApps), and the necessary recovery tool (like TWRP).

  3. Charge Your Device: Ensuring that your Galaxy Ace is fully charged (at least 70%) will prevent any interruptions during the installation.

  4. Unlock Bootloader and Install Custom Recovery: The bootloader must be unlocked to flash a custom ROM. After unlocking it, you should install a custom recovery like TWRP for ease of installation.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Windows Phone 7 UI on Galaxy Ace

Step 1: Unlock the Bootloader

  1. Enable Developer Options: Go to Settings -> About Phone and tap on the Build Number seven times to enable Developer Options.

  2. Enable USB Debugging: In Developer Options, turn on USB Debugging to facilitate smooth communication between your computer and your phone.

  3. Unlock Your Bootloader: Connect your device to a computer, open a command prompt, and use the commands:

    adb reboot bootloader
    fastboot oem unlock

Note that this will wipe all your data.

Step 2: Install a Custom Recovery

  1. Download TWRP Recovery: Find the appropriate TWRP image for the Galaxy Ace.

  2. Flash TWRP via Fastboot: After downloading, use the command:

    fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
  3. Boot into Recovery Mode: Once installed, reboot into recovery mode by holding down the power and volume up buttons.

Step 3: Backup Current ROM

  1. Go to TWRP’s Backup Option: From the TWRP main menu, select Backup.

  2. Select Partitions to Backup: Choose to backup system, data, and boot partitions.

  3. Swipe to Backup: Make the selections and swipe to backup your current system.

Step 4: Wipe Cache and Data

  1. Select Wipe: From the TWRP main menu, go to Wipe.

  2. Factory Reset: Wipe data, cache, and system to prepare your device for the new ROM.

Step 5: Flash the Custom ROM

  1. Transfer ROM Files: Connect your device to your computer and transfer the Windows Phone 7 UI ROM and GApps.

  2. Choose Install: Back in TWRP, select Install and navigate to the ROM file.

  3. Flash ROM: Select the ROM file and swipe to confirm the flash. Repeat this process with the GApps file afterward.

Step 6: Reboot Your Device

  1. Reboot: Once both installations are complete, navigate back to the TWRP main menu and select Reboot -> System.

  2. First Boot: The first boot may take longer than usual, which is normal for a new installation. Expect to see the Windows Phone 7 UI greeting you or a setup screen.

Step 7: Post-Installation Configuration

  1. Setup: Upon a successful boot, configure your language, Wi-Fi, and other settings as prompted.

  2. Install Additional Apps: Head over to the Play Store to reinstall your favorite applications and explore the functionalities of the new UI.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Should any issues arise during or after installation, here are common ones and how to fix them:

  1. Boot Loop: If the phone gets stuck in a boot loop, return to recovery mode and perform a factory reset again, ensuring no residual data affects the new installation.

  2. Missing Apps: If certain applications are not working as expected or are missing integrations, ensure that you have installed the appropriate GApps package compatible with your ROM version.

  3. Performance Issues: If performance lags persist, consider checking for available updates in the custom ROM community; newer kernels or patches can improve performance.

Conclusion

Installing a custom ROM of the Windows Phone 7 UI on the Galaxy Ace is a remarkable endeavor that allows users to breathe new life into an old device, explore advanced customization capabilities, and learn about the Android operating system’s inner workings. While there are risks involved, the rewards—enhanced functionality, unique aesthetics, and improved performance—make the journey worthwhile for many enthusiasts.

The tech community thrives on experimentation, and with informed preparation and cautious approaches, users can craft incredibly customized user experiences adapted to their specific preferences. Each step taken is a step into the innovative world of personalized mobile technology, ensuring devices remain a reflection of their owners’ tastes and needs.

Due to the unexpected software update that was released recently, the ROM will be postponed until thursday as i am forced to restart the ROM on the new update. I would release the ROM on the last update but i would rather start on the newly fresh one which most of you are probably already running. i will start working on it first thing tomorrow thanks to Woodstock77 for finding a fix for root after the new update, and Androidxd for offering his time with building the ROM from my instructions.

Sorry for the inconvenience please be patient the ROM will be ready by thursday

Thanks for the update, but before I decide to download it thursday, and lose all the apps (I dropped Titanium Back Up, it doesnt work for me) I had. May I ask, does it have all those, cool, interesting but yet still confusing little tweaks and setting (status bar tweaks, built in hot-spot, status bar at the bottom, CPU Overclock tweak Sliders) and all those «nifty» features like CM7?

Ehh it will eventually get there maybe in a couple weeks but not in the first version. To be honest the first version will kind of be boring, but after this this weekend it will get better and better like in the second version after its released you will get some advance speed tweaks thats faster than the other «speed build.prop» and the theme will be rocking in the second version also. Right now im not sure wether you will lose yours apps, because i havnt decided what method to go with.

Did you figure out the signal icons?

You have to manually re-name them in SystemUI.apk but i havnt got the time to look at them yet. I believe you got them themed on your theme you released recently am i correct? whats the name of the signal bars so i can manually do them, message me.

  • #7

looks like androidx is on vacation or something, i can’t seem to get a hold of him. would anyone else like to help me finished the ROM by thursday? i will only need you for 2 and a half hours tops tomorrow anytime after 2 in the afternoon im free.

Wish i had the Warp -__-, i could have ported this ROM looking it’s best in 24 hours tops.

  • #9

ROM almost ready just doing a lil touch ups with it thanks to Rally 517 for offering his time into making it. late tonight i’ll have a tester that i have already choosen to test the ROM for bugs etc. There really shouldnt be any bugs as i didnt do any major modding to it

«yet»

. the ROM will be up tomorrow around 5 pm. lol i apologize if it seems boring but i will be extremely busy this weekend and i just wanted to get the ROM up and running even if its simple. Next week it will be getting some major updates where things like the dialer will be themed settings popups signal bars, deodex etc. this is how it looks on the ultra, it will loook similar on the Warp as well.

the REAL question is it *truely* going to be a rom or a nandroid?

If not, I can try to repackage a nandroid into rom format and try that.. not too difficult afaik (from what I understand)

  • #25

It wont be released in beta stages as the first release will only be some major theming. After im finally Done/satisfied with the theme i will be doing speed tweaks, even faster than the build.prop tweak. Working on the theme as i write this too.

[ROM] Back to the Future [XBmod-Yuki]

UPD.

Windows Phone 7004

  • Скачиваем сам ром xboxmod.sylvester20007.com/roms/HD2_Updatable_XBmod_Yuki_v1.zip

Services -> Clear SD Mbr
Затем дождаться загрузки WP7 и в настройках в пункте About выбрать «Reset your phone»

    HD2-7720fix.rar
    WP7 Update Cab Sender.zip
    DeviceProvisioning.cab

SD-FIX.cab
WP7 Update Cab Sender
