Windows Never Released (abbreviated to WNR) is a cult started by jhj22 in 2008. It is where people make fictional Windows bootscreens and (rarely) desktop using programs such as Photoshop or Paint.NET and often compile then into videos.

Windows Mockups (WM) is an alternative title of WNR, and was popular in 2017, while people here doing bootscreens frequently. During 2017 there was an increase in «cringy» WNRs. This lead to Aero Community members starting to consider WNR dead, leading to Twiglets1888 starting the Windows Mockups cult, where each idea would usually have accompanying desktops, logon screens or programs too. This would give people a deeper understanding of how the idea may have looked and worked. However, in July 2017 following a drama everyone agreed to end the elitism and return to doing WNRs instead of WMs.

WNR is is notably worsened in 2018-19, after several aeroians and minderians quits making WNR videos. It became even worse in 2020, 2021 and 2022, following Windows Mockups Cold War and other conflicts, on which it affected productivity of several prominent members. It gets worse when some people steals other works for their Windows Never Released type of collections.

NROS seems like WNR too, but it is non-Windows mockups.

The name of Windows Never Released was coined back in 2011.

Nowadays the cult is named as «Operating System Mockups» due to reasons such as; the appearance and arrival of people doing non-Windows mockups.

Etymology[edit]

Originally, fictional versions of Windows was called Never Released Windows Versions by jhj22, but it was believed the name got distorted by aqwert22, naming the mockups videos as Windows Never Released. It took longer to blame the Windows Never Released name for it’s english language being broken, which leading some peoples to create Windows Mockups videos.

Pre-History[edit]

Main article: Prehistory
  • August 1998 — Created Windows Titanic 98, which likely inspired present-day WNRs.
  • 2001 — Released Windows RG on Newgrounds.
  • 2005 — Released Windows XXP on Newgrounds.
  • 2008 — Released Windows Doors on Newgrounds.

Most notable ideas[edit]

Reception[edit]

Redeeming quality[edit]

Nermal Cat, Neptune98, fean, Glosswired, and a few more WNRers is praised by high-quality Windows arts (Boot screens, desktops, etc).

Criticism[edit]

While the cult is little known, it has gained some infamy outside of the community for the low quality and unrealistic design of many of the bootscreens, as the cult is mostly associated with works by Minderia and his followers. The term «Windows Never Released» has also been criticised for being broken English, along with it being misleading. People who are unaware of what WNR is think that it means «unreleased Windows versions» and may start accusing the creator of that video of lying.

The community also has a bad reputation for its toxicity and immaturity. Since 2017, the community has split into two sides — Minderians and non-Minderians. This resulted from many people using assets created by Minderia, which is frowned upon by the older part of the community for being lazy and low effort. The splitting has gotten even worse, with some people being referred as Arsenians, Cheat Manians, Tartarians, Chromaticans, and even more. The community overall has been labelled by some as a «kindergarten», especially from people who are unaware of the more mature part of the community.

Even further WNR being criticised thanks by Arsen54800 and Mockup Man (former), while still using Update 5 and it’s modifications.

Windows Never Released (Web Original)

Even an operating system has its set of Fan Works.

Windows Never Released is a series of Windows mockups, where a community can make fake desktops, bootscreens and logon screens of fictional versions of Microsoft’s famous operating system — Windows and sharing them on various social media, showing their ideas for Microsoft Windows. The Fanon!Windows usually have remixed startup and shutdown sounds, sometimes they include existing ones from other OSes. The mockup screens can be made in any of computer graphics programs like Photoshop, GIMP, Krita or Paint.

The first of WNRs started with Never Released Windows Versions by jhj22 in 2008, on YouTube, showcasing rather esoteric (and some, as a joke) ideas for fictional Windows versions. However, the idea of WNR took off, because it allowed the Windows community to experiment with ideas of what their dream Windows version would look like. Popular WNR creators include Nermal Cat, GuySwagger, Neptune98, MinderiaYoutuber and TLakituGamingTV.

Windows Never Released has examples of:

  • Adaptational Expansion: A handful of WNR mockup feature real Windows versions with fictional editions (such as Windows XP Workstation Edition).
    • Another variation is the WNR versions of Windows 1.0x, 2.0x/2.1x and 3.0 having their own startup and shutdown sounds, unlike their Real Life counterparts.
  • The Aesthetics of Technology: Some WNR mockups have a rather sophisticated design that heavily deviates from the familiar Windows interface.
  • Ascended Extra: Longhorn and Whistler and to lesser extent Neptune (prototype versions of Vista and XP, respectively) have gotten far more focus here than they did when they were developed.
  • Aerith and Bob: With so many different names for codenames of Windows mockups, this is bound to happen. Most names are quite normal (for example: Harrah’s, Winter, Chromium, Everest, Narquise, etc.), some have more unique ones (Nightlife, Vanta, Fahrenheit, Chlorophyll, Fidangör, etc.).
  • Crossover: Some feature elements from non-Microsoft operating systems (mostly from IBM’s OS/2 Warp or Apple’s macOS).
    • A few would feature crossovers outside Windows’ respective market (such as Windows: Touhou Edition).
    • Of course, there’s also «Windows History with Never Released versions», which features both real Windows versions (read: XP, NT 4, 7, Vista) and fictionalised ones in chronological order.
    • Sometimes with OS-tan, which makes sense, considering both are related to Windows itself.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Earlier WNR videos are made more of a joke, some of them rather poorly-done. However, the imagination was still there and it didn’t take long before more serious WNR creators to make videos that are better-done and far more accurate to Microsoft official versions.
  • The Future: Some WNRs with a more futuristic setting were made to look like they will be released in the future (say 2040).
  • Product Placement: The cradle of the WNR series. After all, it’s all about fictionalised versions of Windows, isn’t it?
    • Exaggerated: Few WNR mockups can feature products outside tech industry.
  • Scenery Porn: Some wallpapers of OS mockups can feature quite few beautiful illustrations. An example is Microsoft Codename Everest.
  • Viewer-Friendly Interface: Justified, and also Truth in Television, as most fanmade screenshots have a Start Button and Start Menu similar to most Windows versions since 95.

      Oggosoft

A time traveler named Samuel Caufman theorized who founded Oggosoft by time traveling to the year 1 BTE/0E∞, one year before 13800000000BC when they developed and released the first operating system. The person who was claimed to find the very first computer company is an (Neon Genesis Evangelion-like) angel, (like Tabris/Kaworu Nagisa) named Myhsja Moonlak. A woman named Mary Nicks, who also time traveled to the year 1 BTE/0E∞, also confirmed that Myhsja was the one who created the company. Myhsja later died of Heart Cancer and then Thomas Sengurlor came on. He created the next versions of Vanura and would go on to later form Malco.

      Details of Company

The first company made Vanura, the very first operating system. It was created in the year 1000000 BTE.

The motto used to be «We make it happen.»

It was changed to “Your Imagination is Our Possibility.” a bit later.

It’s hard to see!! Just level up the brightness.

Oggosoft was a company that did big computers that had 15 bytes of storage.

These computers had billions of bugs and could crash every millisecond.

Oggosoft was shut down and renamed to Malco in 500 A.D. It’s new series of operating system, Vindaugus, replaced Vanura that year. Malco reduced the numbers of bugs, so that their computers and OSes crash less frequently.

There is a similar company called Nanosoft. It’s like Oggosoft, but in the middle ages.

Note: The competitors came a bit later after Oggosoft was created.

      Codename

      Final name

Windows Codename Delta is the codename of Windows OMV. It is also known as Windows OMV, due to its name. It is the successor of Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. As for OMV it is named after Austrian petrol station (because it was made with collaboration with HagsBurg Computers Inc./Kadishenware and OMV, specially designed for computers in OMV) as for Delta it is named after fourth letter of Greek alphabet and seventh letter of Pearler alphabet.

      History

      Pre-Nashville

Before Windows Cleveland was released, there was Windows 95 OSR1. In 1996 Microsoft released a build of Windows 95 called build 4.10.999. However it is codenamed Cleveland.

      Pre-Seven, «Nashville»

Later, the build is renamed from «Cleveland» to «Nashville». Due to Windows NT 4.0 and development of Windows 98 it is cancelled and original build was merged in order to develop Windows Memphis. The release intended to focus on a tighter integration between Windows and Internet Explorer, in order to better compete with Netscape Navigator. After the deal with Hagsburg (now Kadishenware) it is reset with a Plus pack, an early version of Outlook and a new version of Internet Explorer. Later, the reset build being merged with NT project «Seven» to form Windows Codename: Antarctica.

      «Seven»

During development of Windows NT 5.0 Microsoft made a deal with HagsBurg Computers Inc. to collaborate on a NT Project to compete with HagsBurg’s competitor Nashan Software Corp., which have already collaborate with Apple Computer Inc. However Bill Gates hated the fact that Delta OS is open source, which HagsBurg/Kadishenware made, and snap out of It, which to make a variation of NT kernel with key features of Delta OS and Delta DOS kernels, to make a Delta-like NT project (Delta-like means OS behaving in a similar manner to or being compatible with either Delta OS, Windows NT or both).

In late 1996, they created the Windows Codename: Seven build 7777.7, which is updated version of Windows 5.0 Beta 1. It introduced logon screen, firewall, new start menu, start screen and Internet Explorer 7.7. It is planned to be released in July 7 1997. Several Seven builds were part of early Windows NT 5.0 builds. However, the project proved to be too ambitious. Later builds featured Delta OS-esque features. They merged reset Windows Nashville from 9x and Windows Codename: Seven to form Windows Codename: Antarctica in May 1997. Because of bankruptcy caused by the sabotage, HagsBurg is refounded as Kadishenware, but keeps the collaboration with Microsoft.

      «Antarctica»

In 1997, Windows Antarctica was formed, and planned to be released in mid 1999. However, due to builds of Windows 2000 (NT 5.0), which Third Edition was released three days before first build of Beta 3), it is updated. Build 1111.1 It introduced Microsoft Office 1999, Microsoft Dream Browser, and Emergency mode. The last build known is build 1200.5.

      «Delta»

      Pre-Development

The Odyssey document confirms there would be new variation of Windows Server 2000. Later, it would given a codename Bloom. However, later documents renamed Bloom to Delta. As stated in confidential document, Delta is originally planned as a Windows Server 2000 variation. This changed in August 22 1999.

      Development

Originally, Windows Delta should named choice of either «Windows.NET» or «Windows 2001» or even «Windows NT 5.5». The most popular choice was Windows.NET. Before Windows OMV was confirmed, Bill Gates think, that none of them will be used, due to changed plan. The plan changed because of the OS was not even fully finished for year 2001, server has not improved and Windows Codename Delta is being different to Windows 2000. Neither does Tev Hanamadski. Before Windows Nashville being developed, Bill Gates went to Vienna while the others were on Greece, every time when his European car’s gas is running out he went to OMV. He states, that OMV is his favorite European petrol station. Many OMV employees worked at Microsoft. This made Tev being confused. Newly reformed company Kadishenware think it is ambitious, choice is logo of OMV or the text itself. Most of employees chosed the logo, since the OS was made with partnership and friendship of Kadishenware and OMV. Tev Hanamadski agreed. The concept of Windows OMV beta was began in September 23 2001. October 3 2001, Windows OMV Beta 2.7 was released, build 2490.1. Beta 2.9 was released in October 10 2001, build 2500.0. Beta 3 was released in October 29 2001, build 2533.8. Final Beta Release was released in November 23 2001, build 2540.4. The last build ever to include the word «Delta» is 2540.0. Final Beta Release include Luna, Royale, Zune, Embedded, Watercolor, and Chartreuse Mongoose themes, other than Prototype theme. Release Preview was released in December 9 2001, build 2555.5. Community Technology Preview was released in December 12 2001, build 2557.9. Release Candidate 0 was released in December 13 2001, build 2560.9. Release Candidate 1 was released in December 22, 2001, build 2575,9. Release Candidate 2 was released in December 28 2001, build 2590.6. Pre-RTM build of Windows OMV was released in January 3 2002 build 2591.3. RTM Escrow build was released in January 7 2002, build 2592.0. Public Testing build was released on January 8 2002, build 2592.5. Stability and Security Testing was released on January 9 2002, build 2592.9 RTM of Windows OMV was released in January 10 2002, build 2593.5. General availability of Windows OMV was released in January 19 2002, build 2595.7. Release to web of Windows OMV was released at January 24 2002, build 2599.1. Windows OMV officially released at February 22 2002, build 2600.0. After this release, Microsoft and Kadishenware end their partnership, because there’s nothing else to do with Windows OMV for Kadishenware. Moreover, Tev Hanamadski and Kadishenware were credited for starting the development as Seven.
