Windows Never Released (abbreviated to WNR) is a cult started by jhj22 in 2008. It is where people make fictional Windows bootscreens and (rarely) desktop using programs such as Photoshop or Paint.NET and often compile then into videos.
Windows Mockups (WM) is an alternative title of WNR, and was popular in 2017, while people here doing bootscreens frequently. During 2017 there was an increase in «cringy» WNRs. This lead to Aero Community members starting to consider WNR dead, leading to Twiglets1888 starting the Windows Mockups cult, where each idea would usually have accompanying desktops, logon screens or programs too. This would give people a deeper understanding of how the idea may have looked and worked. However, in July 2017 following a drama everyone agreed to end the elitism and return to doing WNRs instead of WMs.
WNR is is notably worsened in 2018-19, after several aeroians and minderians quits making WNR videos. It became even worse in 2020, 2021 and 2022, following Windows Mockups Cold War and other conflicts, on which it affected productivity of several prominent members. It gets worse when some people steals other works for their Windows Never Released type of collections.
NROS seems like WNR too, but it is non-Windows mockups.
The name of Windows Never Released was coined back in 2011.
Nowadays the cult is named as «Operating System Mockups» due to reasons such as; the appearance and arrival of people doing non-Windows mockups.
Etymology[edit]
Originally, fictional versions of Windows was called Never Released Windows Versions by jhj22, but it was believed the name got distorted by aqwert22, naming the mockups videos as Windows Never Released. It took longer to blame the Windows Never Released name for it’s english language being broken, which leading some peoples to create Windows Mockups videos.

Reception[edit]
Redeeming quality[edit]
Nermal Cat, Neptune98, fean, Glosswired, and a few more WNRers is praised by high-quality Windows arts (Boot screens, desktops, etc).
Criticism[edit]
While the cult is little known, it has gained some infamy outside of the community for the low quality and unrealistic design of many of the bootscreens, as the cult is mostly associated with works by Minderia and his followers. The term «Windows Never Released» has also been criticised for being broken English, along with it being misleading. People who are unaware of what WNR is think that it means «unreleased Windows versions» and may start accusing the creator of that video of lying.
The community also has a bad reputation for its toxicity and immaturity. Since 2017, the community has split into two sides — Minderians and non-Minderians. This resulted from many people using assets created by Minderia, which is frowned upon by the older part of the community for being lazy and low effort. The splitting has gotten even worse, with some people being referred as Arsenians, Cheat Manians, Tartarians, Chromaticans, and even more. The community overall has been labelled by some as a «kindergarten», especially from people who are unaware of the more mature part of the community.
Even further WNR being criticised thanks by Arsen54800 and Mockup Man (former), while still using Update 5 and it’s modifications.

Even an operating system has its set of Fan Works.
Windows Never Released is a series of Windows mockups, where a community can make fake desktops, bootscreens and logon screens of fictional versions of Microsoft’s famous operating system — Windows and sharing them on various social media, showing their ideas for Microsoft Windows. The Fanon!Windows usually have remixed startup and shutdown sounds, sometimes they include existing ones from other OSes. The mockup screens can be made in any of computer graphics programs like Photoshop, GIMP, Krita or Paint.
The first of WNRs started with Never Released Windows Versions by jhj22 in 2008, on YouTube, showcasing rather esoteric (and some, as a joke) ideas for fictional Windows versions. However, the idea of WNR took off, because it allowed the Windows community to experiment with ideas of what their dream Windows version would look like. Popular WNR creators include Nermal Cat, GuySwagger, Neptune98, MinderiaYoutuber and TLakituGamingTV.
Windows Never Released has examples of:
- Adaptational Expansion: A handful of WNR mockup feature real Windows versions with fictional editions (such as Windows XP Workstation Edition).
- Another variation is the WNR versions of Windows 1.0x, 2.0x/2.1x and 3.0 having their own startup and shutdown sounds, unlike their Real Life counterparts.
- The Aesthetics of Technology: Some WNR mockups have a rather sophisticated design that heavily deviates from the familiar Windows interface.
- Ascended Extra: Longhorn and Whistler and to lesser extent Neptune (prototype versions of Vista and XP, respectively) have gotten far more focus here than they did when they were developed.
- Aerith and Bob: With so many different names for codenames of Windows mockups, this is bound to happen. Most names are quite normal (for example: Harrah’s, Winter, Chromium, Everest, Narquise, etc.), some have more unique ones (Nightlife, Vanta, Fahrenheit, Chlorophyll, Fidangör, etc.).
- Crossover: Some feature elements from non-Microsoft operating systems (mostly from IBM’s OS/2 Warp or Apple’s macOS).
- A few would feature crossovers outside Windows’ respective market (such as Windows: Touhou Edition).
- Of course, there’s also «Windows History with Never Released versions», which features both real Windows versions (read: XP, NT 4, 7, Vista) and fictionalised ones in chronological order.
- Sometimes with OS-tan, which makes sense, considering both are related to Windows itself.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Earlier WNR videos are made more of a joke, some of them rather poorly-done. However, the imagination was still there and it didn’t take long before more serious WNR creators to make videos that are better-done and far more accurate to Microsoft official versions.
- The Future: Some WNRs with a more futuristic setting were made to look like they will be released in the future (say 2040).
- Product Placement: The cradle of the WNR series. After all, it’s all about fictionalised versions of Windows, isn’t it?
- Exaggerated: Few WNR mockups can feature products outside tech industry.
- Scenery Porn: Some wallpapers of OS mockups can feature quite few beautiful illustrations. An example is Microsoft Codename Everest.
- Viewer-Friendly Interface: Justified, and also Truth in Television, as most fanmade screenshots have a Start Button and Start Menu similar to most Windows versions since 95.
