You may play MPG files on Windows 10 by installing Microsoft’s MPEG-2 Video Extension, using the VLC Player, or converting MPG to MP4.

If you have a file with the .mpg extension it is either a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video.

MPG files aren’t common these days compared to MP4. But there are many old video files that are available in the MPG format.

Sometimes you may not be able to play an MPG file on Windows 10. If so, read on to fix the issue.

On Windows, you can use Windows Media Player or Movies & TV app to play media files.

These media players can only play MPG files that have MPEG-1 video.

If your MPG file has MPEG-2 video, then your Windows Media Player or Movies & TV will not play it by default.

You’ll get the following message. Or your MPEG-2 file may play, but you get only audio.

You’ll be prompted to download and install the MPEG-2 codec into your Windows system.

You can do this for free at the Microsoft Store.

According to Microsoft, the MPEG-2 Extension is a handy tool. It comes with MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 codecs.

Types of video files known as MPEG or MPG files are named after the Motion Picture Experts Group that developed the format. There are .mpg extension files, which are usually MPEG version 1, as well as .mp2 files, .mp3 files and .mp4 files. Each MPG format can be played by different players, and some require add-ons to be used as Windows Media Player file types. You can also play MPG files with other tools such as VLC.

Windows Meda Player is a Microsoft application used for playing a wide range of media types on Microsoft Windows, as well as its own Windows Media Player format. Microsoft provides a list of the types of files usable with various versions of Windows Media Player. When you download a new type of file, check to see if it’s compatible with the version you have and whether it requires an add-on to play.

Playing MPG Files

If you download or otherwise come across a file with a .mpg or .mpeg file extension, it’s often an MPEG version 1 file. If so, you’re in luck because Windows Media Player plays these types of files automatically without any add-ons. Open the file using the «File» menu in Windows Media Player, and the file plays.

Some .mpg and .mpeg extension files are MPEG version 2 files. This is a file format used by DVD video. Windows Media Player can’t play these files without help, but you can download add-ons, known as DVD decoders, from Microsoft’s website to handle them. Players are also available from companies including Corel and Cyberlink. Look to see which features they have and how they match up with your needs.

Another MPEG file format is MP3 audio. These are playable by Windows Media Player and other programs, including many web browsers, without plug-ins. They have the extension .mp3 and contain only audio, not video.

MPEG version 4 files are not playable by Windows Media Player directly. However, you can download plug-ins called decoder packs for these files using links at the Microsoft website to let Windows Media Player handle them. They usually have the extension .mp4 or .mp4v.

Other MPG Player Software

Windows Media Player isn’t the only media player available for Windows. You may be able to play additional files using other players. Some examples are Apple’s iTunes, the free program called DivX and the free and open source tool called VLC Media Player.

Check to see which of these players can handle the files you want to play. VLC, for example, can play MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 files without any additional support files.

«I’m experiencing some difficulties in opening an MPG file on Movie Maker for Windows 8. The file shows as if it was «inserted» into the timeline, but I can’t play it nor edit it. After upgrading to Windows 8, many folks have got stuck for the Windows 8 system doesn’t support MPG files playback. Time to plug a good alternative then ! I have gotten quite fond of VLC. An open source (read FREE) video player that really performs well. I suggest you download and install VLC on your Windows 8 system and play your mpg files that way ! Problem solved !

Method 3: Convert MPG to WMV or MP4

For those who don’t wanna to install VLC or the codec pack won’t work, here is the the third choice, which ensures you to play MPG files on Windows 8 with Media Player and Windows Movie Maker. I received an email (thanks Tim) that reported an issue with DVDVob2Mpg, or at least that’s how it looked. Tim had a set of VOB files that were recorded with a handheld dvd camera. When he converted the VOB files to MPG files with DVDVob2Mpg, only the audio would play on Windows 8.

My first thought was an issue with the source VOB files so I asked if I could look into it. I converted the VOB files and they played just fine on my Windows 7 PC. I did not understand ? All tools at my disposal showed that the resulting files were perfectly OK.

So I did some more test and indeed, on my Windows 8 PC the files do not play. The Metro style VIDEO app simply stops and says the format is not supported. Windows Media Player only plays the Audio.

Strange ? So I Googled the issue and it seems that Windows 8, at least its standard version(s), simply doesn’t play mpg-2 files anymore ? Basically the mpg that is recorded on DVD is not played anymore. Just when I thought Windows 8 couldn’t disappoint more, it just did.

Time to plug a good alternative then ! I have gotten quite fond of VLC. An open source (read FREE) video player that really performs well. I suggest you download and install VLC on your Windows 8 system and play your mpg files that way ! Problem solved !

It is of course still useful to convert VOB files to MPG files. The fact that Windows 8 doesn’t play perfectly OK mpeg-2 files doesn’t mean they are not … well … perfectly OK ! If you want to use or load the mpg/video into other programs, to edit or to remaster a new DVD or even to play back, then these applications will be happy and eager to receive proper and correct mpg files as input. I will also avoid all sorts of issues if these applications don’t understand the VOB format well, or get confused because of incorrect timing etc. And of course removing the VOB clutter from the MPG data stream is always a good idea.
