Windows XP Media Center Edition

Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) is a version of the Windows XP operating system which was the first version of Windows to include Windows Media Center, designed to serve as a home-entertainment hub. The last version, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2, was released on October 14, 2005. After that, Windows Media Center was included in certain editions of later Windows versions. It was an optional, paid addition to Windows 8^[4] and then discontinued in Windows 10.^[5] Windows XP Media Center Edition reached end of support on April 8, 2014, along with most other Windows XP editions.

Windows XP Media Center Edition has had the following releases, all based on Windows XP Professional with all features enabled except domain-joining ability disabled in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and Terminal Services in the original release.

• A preview version of Windows XP Media Center Edition from Microsoft’s eHome division, was shown at CES 2002, with the final version released later that year.^[6]
• Windows XP Media Center Edition (codenamed «Freestyle»)^[7] was the original version of Windows XP Media Center, which was built from the Windows XP Service Pack 1 codebase. It was first announced on July 16, 2002,^[7] released to manufacturing on September 3, 2002, and was first generally available on October 29, 2002, in North America.^[2]
• Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 (codenamed «Harmony»),^[8] which was launched on September 30, 2003, and was made available as an upgrade to the owners of the original editions’ licenses, was built from the Windows XP Service Pack 1 codebase, after the original Windows XP Media Center Edition.^[9]
• Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (codenamed «Symphony»),^[10] which was launched on October 12, 2004, was built from the Windows XP Service Pack 2 codebase.^[11] It is the first edition of MCE available to non-Tier 1 system builders. Among other things, it includes support for Media Center Extenders, and CD/DVD-Video burning support.^{[citation needed]}
• Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 (codenamed «Emerald», October 14, 2005)^[12][13] is a major update to MCE 2005 (Symphony) and was a recommended download. It adds support for the Xbox 360 as a media center extender, DVB-T broadcasts, and support for two ATSC tuner cards. It is the second version of Windows XP Media Center based on Windows XP Service Pack 2, after Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

To determine the underlying edition of Windows XP on which a particular revision of MCE is based, the System Properties Control Panel applet can be used. To determine the revision of MCE that is being used, select the About Media Center option from the General -> Settings area inside MCE.

Windows XP Media Center Edition is distinguished with its exclusive component, Media Center, a media player that supports watching and recording TV programs, as well as playing DVD-Video, photo slideshows, and music. Media Center sports a user interface that is optimized for use from a distance with large fonts and icons.

Unlike competing commercial DVR products, Microsoft did not charge a monthly subscription fee for its Media Center TV guide service.

Due to its strict hardware requirements, Microsoft opted not to supply Media Center as an independent retail version. Microsoft only distributed it to MSDN subscribers and original equipment manufacturers in certain countries.^[which?] Consumers purchase Media Center preinstalled on a new computer, set-top box or embedded device.

• SoundSpectrum’s G-Force: a special edition is included as one of the music visualizations for Windows Media Player.
• Screensavers and themes from Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP are included (Aquarium, Da Vinci, Nature, Space and My Pictures Premium).
• Media Center Extender Support, dedicated hardware devices that allow users to view the same content that is available on the MCE computer over wired or wireless Ethernet, are introduced in this version for the first time. Linksys and other companies currently sell Media Center Extenders, and Microsoft sells an add-on kit for the Xbox game console that allows it to function as an extender. The Xbox 360 also has Media Center Extender functionality out of the box, including HDTV support (which is notably absent from current extenders). Media Center 2005 currently can support up to 5 Media Center Extenders per household.
• First party hardware: Microsoft has released its own first party remote, receiver and infrared blaster with MCE 2005. A new specially designed wireless computer keyboard for MCE 2005 was released September 2005.

• Joining a Windows Server domain: The ability to join an Active Directory domain is disabled by default. Computers that upgrade to Windows Media Center from a version of Windows that had joined the domain before upgrade will remain joined to the domain. However, if they leave the domain, they may never re-join. The option to join a domain during installation of this version of Windows is still available. Microsoft says that the reason for this discontinuation of feature is to support Media Center Extenders which required Fast User Switching.^[15] It is possible to re-enable joining a domain by modifying the Windows registry.^[16]
• Windows Media Player 6.4, which is shipped with Windows 2000 and can be installed on Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98, was removed.

Media Center has higher hardware requirements than other editions of Windows XP. MCE 2005 requires at least a 1.6 GHz processor, DirectX 9.0 hardware-accelerated GPU (ATI Radeon 9 series or nVidia GeForce FX Series or higher), and 256 MB of System RAM. Some functionality, such as Media Center Extender support, use of multiple tuners, or HDTV playback/recording carries higher system requirements.

Media Center is much more restricted in the range of hardware that it supports than most other software DVR solutions. Media Center tuners must have a standardized driver interface, and they must have hardware MPEG-2 encoders (this was changed as companies such as ATI wrote drivers to support MCE 2005 with their All-In-Wonder cards and HDTV Wonder cards), closed caption support, and a number of other features. Media Center remote controls are standardized in terms of button labels and functionality, and, to a degree, general layout.

Windows XP Media Center Edition could be directly upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate.^[17]

Support for Windows XP Media Center Edition under Microsoft’s consumer product lifecycle policy was planned to end on April 13, 2010,^[3] however, in July 2009,^[18] Microsoft extended the support window to July 12, 2011.^[19] This date would be then extended again on December 31, 2010^[18] to a final end of support date of April 8, 2014,^[20] citing support volumes in emerging markets as the reason for the extension.^[19]

Windows Media Center is a digital video recorder and media player application that was first introduced in 2002 with the release of Windows XP Media Center Edition. It was later included in the Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista, and later all editions of Windows 7 except Starter and Home Basic.^[a] The application would later be made available as an optional paid upgrade for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Windows XP (2002)[edit | edit source]

Windows Media Center was originally planned as a successor to the canceled Activity Centers for the Neptune and Windows Me operating systems. The earliest available build of Windows XP Media Center Edition contained a near-finalized variation of the interface, along with its original working title Windows Remote View. Not much else is known about the planning or overall development of the initial Media Center Edition release.

The operating system shipping with Media Center was codenamed «Freestyle». It was released as Windows XP Media Center Edition in 2002 only in English. Windows Media Center is only available with brands like HP, Gateway, Sony, and more.

Longhorn[edit | edit source]

Development continued initially on the codebase of Windows Longhorn, Microsoft’s project for the successor of Windows XP. The Media Center components needed to be installed manually through the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet (APPWIZ.CPL). As the WIM installation method was introduced in build 4001, it was no longer possible to install these components, so development shifted in December 2002 back to the codebase of Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Windows XP (2004, 2005)[edit | edit source]

In 2003, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 was released with a design overhaul for the Media Center user interface, along with support for a Media Center Extender (codenamed BobSled). It is the first version to be made available internationally with support for a wide range of localizations unlike previous versions, which were only localized and released for the North American, French, German and Japanese markets. It also introduced support for broadcast teletext for European localizations and makes better use of widescreens compared to version 2002.

In 2004, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 was released, again with UI changes for the Media Center, including the switch of the default font from Trebuchet MS to Segoe UI, making it the first version of Windows with the Segoe font family to be released. This version also introduced support for HDTV.

A slimmed-down variant of Windows Media Center, called Portable Media Center, was available in the mid-2000s for Windows CE. OEMs could license the software from Microsoft to put it as the default user interface for their Windows CE-powered systems.

The Portable Media Center was later used as the foundation for the user interface of the Zune series of media players, which themselves also ran Windows CE.

Windows Vista[edit | edit source]

Development shifted in 2005 to the Windows Vista codebase after the Longhorn development was reset. The first build with Media Center was build 5212, which introduced a similar interface found in Windows 7 version of the program. As development progressed, the look and feel of Windows Media Center changed drastically with updated branding and UI elements in build 5270, and redesigned music and window controls in build 5310. The UI would be refined further in later builds with a new launch animation and updated sounds.

In early builds of Windows 7, Windows Media Center looked identical to its Vista version. However, later builds would receive a minor UI revamp with a new launch animation and sounds. The final sounds were implemented in build 7051

Deprecation and removal[edit | edit source]

Microsoft ceased active development of Windows Media Center after Windows 7 shipped in 2009, with its official deprecation presented in Windows 8/8.1 after it no longer became bundled with consumer editions by default. A separate variant of the Professional edition that additionally contains the Windows Media Center application was later developed and offered as a supplementary paid add-on for these versions until 30 October 2015 via the Add features to Windows 8 service and the Windows 8 Feature Packs web site.^[1] As a result, the application would not see much change between Windows 7 and Windows 8.

On May 2015, Microsoft announced that Windows Media Center would no longer be available for Windows 10 due to declining usage;^[2][3] the application (and its corresponding SKU) were ultimately shelved and removed in build 10147. As a result, users upgrading to Windows 10 from a previous version of Windows that had Windows Media Center would lose access to the application, and (in a now-expired limited-time offer) were offered the paid Windows DVD Player for free instead of requiring a payment of US$14.99.^[4]

In January 2020, Microsoft discontinued support for the Electronic Program Guide service on all versions of Windows Media Center as free support for Windows 7 ended.^[5]

Media Center, обычное приложение, которое и представляет собой «единый вход» ко всем мультимедийным функциям персонального компьютера.

Не так давно компьютер играл роль всего-навсего продвинутой пишущей машинки, но эти времена постепенно уходят в прошлое. Благодаря бурному развитию технологий современный ПК представляет собой настоящий центр развлечений. Мы смотрим на нем DVD-диски, слушаем музыку, оцифровываем аудио- и видеозаписи. При наличии TВ-тюнера компьютер вполне сможет заменить и телевизор. Сама собой напрашивается идея каким-то образом аккумулировать все мультимедийные функции современных компьютеров в единой оболочке, создать некий «единый вход», через который можно получить быстрый доступ ко всем возможностям видео и аудио. При этом важно максимально упростить доступ к мультимедийным функциям. Разумеется, это должно быть реализовано даже не на программном, а на системном уровне.

В этом направлении движутся разработчики различных операционных систем. Существуют специальные дистрибутивы Linux, ориентированные специально на просмотр видео и прослушивание аудио. Не могла остаться в стороне и корпорация Microsoft, выпустившая на рынок специальную редакцию операционной системы Windows XP Media Center Edition. В октябре прошлого года было объявлено о выпуске русской версии этой системы, а уже сегодня в магазинах можно приобрести первые компьютеры (медиацентры) с предустановленной Windows XP MCE. Система представляет собой Windows XP Home Edition или Professional с оболочкой Media Center. Что касается русификации, то в данном случае используется технология MUI, когда локализация осуществляется не на системном, а на файловом уровне.

Среднестатистический медиацентр (так мы будем дальше называть компьютер с предустановленной Windows XP MCE) представляет собой компьютер, оснащенный TВ-тюнером, достаточным количеством разъемов для подключения аналоговой и цифровой акустики и видео, ИК-ресивером для пульта дистанционного управления, пишущим DVD-приводом и, разумеется, достаточно мощным процессором и оперативной памятью. Поскольку медиацентр должен выполнять ресурсоемкие задачи, рекомендуются процессор с частотой не ниже 1,5 ГГц и оперативная память объемом от 1 Гб. По утверждению корпорации Microsoft, важны не столько характеристики «железа», сколько вообще наличие соответствующих компонентов.

Media Center — это обычное Windows-приложение, которое и представляет собой вышеупомянутый «единый вход» ко всем мультимедийным функциям персонального компьютера. Благодаря поддержке управления с пульта ДУ его можно использовать и на обычном телевизоре. Разумеется, идеальным вариантом является жидкокристиллический телевизор, так как он может играть и роль монитора.

Поскольку распространяется Windows XP MCE в предустановленном варианте, то и рассматривать мы эту систему будем на примере конкретного медиацентра — Scaleo E от компании Fujitsu-Siemens Computers. В плане железа данная модель не представляет собой ничего экстраординарного — процессор Intel Pentium IV с частотой 3,06 ГГц, оперативная память на 1 Гб, жесткий диск на 160 Гб, графический контроллер Intel 915 GL, звуковой контроллер Realtek, сетевая карта, универсальный привод DVD-RW, карт-ридер, а также ТВ-тюнер Hauppauge WinTV 88x. На корпусе расположено много гнезд для подключения цифровой и аналоговой акустики — от систем 7.1 до обычных наушников, а также несколько разъемов USB. Что особенно радует, они находятся не только на задней, но и на передней панели, где можно обнаружить гнезда для подключения наушников, микрофона, а также два порта USB. Поскольку медиацентр должен взаимодействовать не только с монитором, но и с телевизором, разработчики предусмотрели несколько возможных вариантов подключения телеприемника. В частности, устройство комплектуется проводом Scart-Scart. Есть два разъема Scart — для подключения телевизора и DVD-плеера или видеомагнитофона. На передней панели корпуса предусмотрено светодиодное меню, отображающее состояние и режимы работы компьютера.

К медиацентру прилагаются пульт дистанционного управления и беспроводная клавиатура. Соответственно, имеется встроенный ИК-ресивер, хотя для более качественного соединения можно воспользоваться более мощным внешним ИК-ресивером.

На ИК-пульте за запуск программной оболочки Media Center отвечает специальная кнопка, на которой изображен фирменный «флажок» Windows. После подключения медиацентра к телевизору или монитору, подсоединения телевизионного и сетевого кабелей и загрузки Windows можно нажать заветную кнопку на пульте и перейти непосредственно к настройке. Собственно говоря, интерфейс оболочки Media Center рассчитан на телевизионный экран, так как она имеет простое и удобное полноэкранное меню и достаточно крупный шрифт.

На первом этапе от пользователя потребуется указать параметры интернет-соединения. Забегая вперед, отметим, что интернет медиацентру необходим по нескольким причинам. Во-первых, из Сети загружаются телевизионные программы, во-вторых, информация о прослушиваемых музыкальных дисках, наконец, существует даже специальный сервис, который позволяет просматривать веб-сайты непосредственно из оболочки Media Center.

Но вернемся к процессу настройки. Наверняка, большинство пользователей хотели бы с с помощью медиацентра смотреть телепередачи. Для этого им необходимо указать регион, в котором они находятся, тип принимаемого телевидения (антенна, кабельное или спутниковое) и свой почтовый индекс. Это нужно постольку, поскольку медиацентр загружает из интернета телевизионную программу и необходимо, чтобы она соответствовала месту проживания пользователя. Далее осуществляется сканирование доступного диапазона частот для поиска каналов. После того как все каналы найдены, и каждому из них в автоматическом режиме присвоен порядковый номер (разумеется, последовательность можно будет поменять вручную), необходимо указать тип экрана. Предлагают несколько стандартных вариантов: обычный телевизор или дисплей, встроенный экран (ноутбук), плазменная панель, проектор или проекционный телевизор. После этого нужно отметить и использумеый тип подключения. Поскольку далеко не все владеют терминологией в данной области, приведены рисунки, иллюстрирующие, как выглядит тот или иной разъем.

После того как все настройки завершены, перед нами предстает во всей красе главное меню Media Center, открывающее доступ ко всем функциям. Ко всем пунктам меню можно обращаться как с клавиатуры, так и с пульта ДУ. На последнем имеются кнопки быстрого вызова основных разделов меню Media Center. Рассмотрим основные возможности.

За прослушивание AudioCD отвечает пункт меню «Моя музыка». Как только пользователь вставляет музыкальный диск в привод, автоматически начинается воспроизведение. При этом в подразделе «Моя музыка» — «Альбомы» появится информация о прослушиваемом диске, включающая имя исполнителя, название альбома и каждого трека, а также длительность всех произведений. При наличии интернет-подключения запрашивается сервер CDDB, откуда загружается обложка прослушиваемого альбома. Разумеется, в этом разделе может быть доступна не только музыка с AudioCD, но также треки на жестком диске или флэш-драйве. Media Center создает библиотеку музыкальных файлов, позволяющую сортировать их по жанрам и по именам исполнителей. Можно также осуществлять поиск музыки непосредственно из оболочки Media Center. Кроме того, поддерживаются списки воспроизведения.

Полезная функция — синхронизация медиаконтента. Стоит присоединить к USB-порту медиацентра какое-либо устройство (флэш-драйв, mp3-плеер, цифровую фотокамеру), распознаваемое в виде съемного диска, как система тут же предложит синхронизировать его содержимое, разместить его в соответствующих папках и сделать доступным в оболочке Media Center.

Во время прослушивания трека аппаратное меню медиацентра отображает название. К сожалению, попавшая к нам на тестирование модель не понимает русских букв, так что вместо названия песен на родном языке бегущая строка светодиодного меню показывала нечитаемые символы. Скорее всего, эта проблема решается обновлением прошивки.

Еще одной возможностью, предоставляемой Windows XP MCE, является просмотр изображений. Пользователь может из любых источников добавлять любые изображения в библиотеку картинок и затем просматривать их в полноэкранном режиме. Поддерживается и просмотр в виде слайд-шоу, правда, эффектов смены картинок совсем немного, и они быстро надоедают. В момент демонстрации картинки на аппаратном меню будет отражаться ее название.

Пожалуй, одной из наиболее востребованных возможностей медиацентра можно назвать воспроизведение DVD с фильмами. Достаточно вставить такой диск, и воспроизведение начнется автоматически. С помощью пульта ДУ можно перематывать видео в обе стороны. Доступны два режима перемотки — медленный и быстрый. В случае остановки программа автоматически запоминает место, где было прервано воспроизведение, и пользователь может в дальнейшем продолжить просмотр. Помимо DVD, поддерживаются и диски в формате VideoCD, а вот фильмы Mpeg4 (DivX) не читаются. Чтобы их посмотреть, необходимо установить соответствующие кодеки, выйти из оболочки Media Center и открыть их обычным способом в Windows.

Собственно говоря, медиацентр заменяет собой не только DVD-плеер, но и DVD-рекордер. Непосредственно из главного меню можно записывать CD или DVD. Правда, по сравнению с обычным способом эта запись несколько ограничена — для добавления на диск доступны лишь изображения, музыка, видео или записанные телепередачи. Нельзя также копировать диски (кроме музыкальных), регулировать скорость записи и производить прочие настройки. Но не стоит переживать, ведь в обычном режиме Windows все это будет доступно. Кстати говоря, к модели Scaleo E в качестве приятного бонуса прилагается диск с программой Nero Express.

Самой полезной функцией можно назвать просмотр телевизионных передач. Медиацентр заставляет по-новому взглянуть на такую, казалось бы, привычную вещь, как телевидение. Благодаря наличию жесткого диска пользователь может не только записывать телепередачу, но и ставить на паузу, перематывать запись вперед и назад.

Разумеется, все эти функции доступны владельцам телевизоров со встроенным жестким диском, однако вся эта техника пока еще по своей стоимости недоступна большинству покупателей, чего не скажешь о медиацентрах. Что касается записи телепередач, то ее можно производить как вручную, так и по расписанию. К сожалению, невозможно записывать один канал, а при этом смотреть другой. Даже если вы запланировали запись телеканала в какое-то определенное время, то в урочный час появится сообщение, предлагающее переключиться на записываемый телеканал. Возможность записи телепередач ограничена лишь свободным местом на жестком диске.

Другая не менее полезная и интересная возможность — просмотр телепрограммы непосредственно на экране. При наличии интернет-подключения пользователь загружает программу для каналов, на которые настроен медиацентр. Затем, нажав специальную кнопку на пульте ДУ или выбрав соответствующий пункт меню, можно увидеть анонсы фильмов и передач, ожидающихся в ближайшие две недели. При этом отображаются не только названия, но и краткие описания.

Можно также осуществлять поиск по жанрам. Например, легко находятся все мультфильмы для детей по всем каналам. В принципе, медиацентр способен заменить газету с телепрограммой, ведь, согласитесь, гораздо удобнее просматривать ее на экране. Когда медиацентр переключается на новый телеканал, на котором демонстрируется та или иная передача, пользователь сразу же видит ее название в соответствующем окне. Как и в случае с музыкой и графикой, на светодиодном экране тоже демонстрируется название телепередачи, но, опять же, русские символы корректно не отображаются.

В процессе тестирования иногда возникало сообщение об отсутствии устройства для просмотра телевизионных каналов. Приходилось заново сканировать доступные частоты и настраивать телевизионные каналы. Но и этого было мало, так как после появлялось сообщение, что имеющийся в системе ТВ-тюнер не может использоваться в России. Эта проблема решается обычной перезагрузкой.

При наличии FM-тюнера можно использовать медиацентр и для прослушивания радио. Нужно лишь выбрать соответствующий пункт в главном меню и настроить нужную частоту — вручную или автоматически.

Как уже говорилось выше, медиацентр можно использовать и для просмотра интернет-сайтов. Разумеется, речь идет о просмотре из оболочки Media Center с помощью пульта ДУ. Этот сервис называется «В центре внимания». Понятно, что сайты должны иметь соответствующий интерфейс, специально приспособленный к столь специфичным возможностям. В Рунете таких ресурсов пока совсем мало, на момент написания этих строк в меню было доступно всего два — «Прогноз погоды» и «Радио «Эхо Москвы»». На Западе уже практически все более-менее популярные развлекательные сайты оснащены таким интерфейсом. Однако, по словам представителей Microsoft, в ближайшее время и в нашей стране их число должно значительно возрасти. Создать интерфейс для просмотра через Media Center можно к любому сайту. Для этого нужно загрузить с сайта Microsoft соответствующий набор программных инструментов и подать в корпорацию заявку о тестировании сайта на предмет совместимости с Windows XP Media Center Edition.

В тот момент, когда вы смотрите телевизор, DVD или слушаете музыку, а медиацентр подключен к интернету, можно получать мгновенные сообщения в программе MSN Messenger. Эта программа никак себя не проявляет, спокойно работает в фоновом режиме и никоим образом не мешает просмотру. Но если вдруг приходит сообщение, пользователь будет о нем оповещен. К сожалению, такая функция работает только с MSN Messenger, и неизвестно, будет ли она реализована для других интернет-пейджеров, прежде всего, для популярного у нас ICQ.

Как бы ни была надежна операционная система Windows XP Media Center Edition, время от времени случаются фатальные сбои, в результате которых компьютер перестает загружаться. Никаких особых способов восстановления состояния, помимо стандартных возможностей, таких как System Restore и загрузка последней удачной конфигурации, не предусмотрено. Windows comes to the TV

One of the many editions of Windows XP, this time intended for use in the living room and to react to the growing popularity of media centers of the era like the Tivo in the US, and the Sony PSX DVR in Japan.

Install

Mostly appears the same as Windows XP Professional and even identifies itself as such.

Desktop

The desktop will resemble a stock version of Windows XP. The only difference you will notice is the Media Center icon in the start menu.

This is the main attraction to the Windows Media Center edition and is only included in these editions of Windows XP. It’s intended to be controlled using the media center remote which would have been included with the Media Center PC, although third-party remotes, along with their dongles would come available. As such it’s fiddley to use with just the keyboard and mouse.

MyTV

The place where your TV channels are located. Here you can browse the TV Guide, also known as an EPG, and set up and configure recordings that allow your PC to become a DVR (Digital Video Recorder, like a Tivo or Sky+) There are various options to set up your TV signal, either through cable (with or without a set-top box), satellite or terrestrial/antenna signals.

Settings up the TV signal requires you to connect to Microsoft and provide your Zip or postal code (only US zip codes work, my postcode wasn’t recognized at all despite my locale being set to the United Kingdom)

I was curious to see if my DVB-T tuner was recognized over USB, since Freeview had only recently launched back in 2002 when this operating system was released, Sadly this was not the case as DVB-T wasn’t supported, despite being a thing in 2002 (Freeview in the UK launched in 2002, and we had DTT since 1998 with the launch of ONdigital, however, the USofA uses ATSC which Media Center might support since Microsoft tends to be US-centric for its first generation products)

In a way this is the successor to Web TV for Windows that shipped with Windows 98

My Music

Music tracks ripped from an audio CD will appear here, and sync with Windows Media Player so any tracks added with also appear in Media Center. Presumably, this would also support DRM music from either MSN Music, since this predated Playsforsure or the Zune DRM (Microsoft had a lot of music stores).

My Pictures

Photos and image files located in the My Pictures folder will be displayed here and can be played in a slideshow. Images can be sorted into albums if you have sorted them into folders within the My Pictures folder. Pictures can be sorted by name or date

My Videos

Similar to Pictures, but videos are shown instead. We seem to run into the same issue with playing DVD video as documented below, likely due to requiring graphics acceleration for video playback.

Windows Media Player doesn’t seem to give a shit and will play the file regardless, so why can’t Media Center?

I was unsuccessful in getting a DVD movie to play, and I believe this is due to the lack of a hardware MPEG2 decoder that is required to play back DVDs. This was a Microsoft OEM requirement and meant some TV tuner cards were incompatible as they decoded MPEG2 in software instead, using the main CPU to do the decoding.

As VMWare lacks a hardware MPEG2 decoder, Windows Media Center and Media Player are unable to play back DVDs in their current form. Even after installing the K-Lite codec pack, we are unable to play.

We might have better luck installing on an actual system from the era, specifically one with a graphics card that has onboard MPEG2 decoding, assuming Media Center is compatible with it. I should note that some ATI All-In-Wonder graphics cards of the time also used software decoding to reduce costs and had issues getting their cards certified for the media center due to this implementation. As for why Microsoft did not allow for software decoding, it could be because of multitasking concerns if the user tries to do something else whilst watching a DVD, or DRM concerns. In contrast, the Xbox console decodes MPEG2 in software on its Pentium 3 processor, but it’s unknown if the GeForce GPU accelerates this somewhat.

Maybe later versions are more flexible when it comes to decoding but for now let’s skip ahead.

Conclusion

And that’s it, its pretty much Windows XP with an added Media Center application bundled in. As for why it wasn’t sold as a software upgrade package was due to Microsoft imposing strict hardware specifications in order to use Media Center, specifically with the processor, hardware MPEG decoding, 3D graphics acceleration and an IR remote and sensor. Microsoft really didn’t want anyone using this on hardware that was subpar or missing any components in order to give a consistent experience for the end user.
