Windows Longhorn Build 4011 is a Milestone 4 Build of Windows Longhorn that was shared online on 2006-07-21.[1] At this point, it is relatively the same as Build 4008, though virtually all references to Windows XP have been removed.
The copyright date in the winver banner, which displayed as «2006» in builds Build 4008 and 4005, was corrected in this build, now displaying as «1985-2003».

Setup[]
Although setup itself is similar to Windows Longhorn Build 4008’s, aside from the boot screen, you are not able to get past the product key section due to WinPE bugs and Setup bugs (missing exports). If one was to get the product key section to work, all inputted characters when typing in the product key will be uppercase, alongside dashes being added after every 5 letters.
New Features[]
- The Windows XP boot screen has been replaced with a new Longhorn boot screen, removing the final few references to Windows XP. However, Windows Messenger still throws out .NET Passport notifications which still mentions Windows XP. The Windows XP Tour, which was removed in Build 5048, is also still included.
- The Parental Controls icon has been updated.

- The Desktop Composition Engine now works again, after previously being broken in build 4008. However, it only provides transparency effects.
- The design of the notifications have been updated.
- It is now possible to use the new Avalon taskbar/sidebar settings applicaton while having the new taskbar enabled.
- The title bar in Explorer has been slightly updated, with it now using a gradient instead of a solid color, alongside the icon of the running application.

The Sidebar has gained some major uplifts with new tiles being added, including options, which serves the same purpose as right-clicking on the Sidebar. Other tiles, such as the Search tile, have been updated slightly, while a few others, such as the Windows Media Player tile, no longer requiring registry modifications to be available, most likely being updated as well.
Although the Windows Media Player tile no longer crashes upon adding a sound file unlike Build 4032, you cannot play anything due to the buttons having little to no functionality. The Longhorn Status tile is still not available by default, but it can be enabled with the following code:

Bugs and Quirks[]
- Many drivers aren’t installed by default during the hardware portion of setup and have to be installed manually.
- Icons that are selected by the mouse or keyboard gradually become more pixelated.
- Windows Storage Engine often crashes on startup.
- The OOBE is broken and closes after the first page.
- Task Manager stops responding for a few seconds upon starting a new task and also doesn’t open upon pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
Installation[]
There have been several different disc images for this build that were released online over the years. The copy of this build that is widely available has a corrupt install.wim and as such will not install properly under any circumstances. The copy currently on BetaArchive’s FTP server can install properly, but all long filenames in the winsxs folder of its WinPE got truncated when the ISO was created, hence Setup cannot load the desired components which will lead to debug assertion failure errors. This issue can be fixed by restoring the filenames and rebuilding the ISO with the correct parameters.
Attempting to launch Command Prompt via Shift+F10 in WinPE will trigger a bugcheck with error code 0x0000008E (KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED).
To fix the assert errors, use the installation media from build 4008 and replace the INSTALL.WIM from the build 4008 installation media to the one from this build. Alternatively, the user can upgrade from a previous build as well.
i386 Repack
The i386 Repack is made by Ovctvct, it is available on BetaArchive. Since then the iso was deleted on google drive originally, You may download from User5274’s site about Longhorn Repack.
Unfortunately, the i386 Repack was lost as original. As of today, it was uploaded on Internet Archive though.

Product key characters are now uppercase, along with dashes now being added every five letters.
After partitioning the disk, Setup now asks the user to set a computer name.

A new boot screen has been introduced, which features the Longhorn logo and wordmark along with the Windows XP progressbar.

Notifications[edit | edit source]
Notifications now contain a close button, no longer requiring the user to wait until the notification expires.

Nearly all sidebar tiles were updated and no longer require a registry modification to appear.
Search now features a search bar, along with a My Stuff button, where the user can search for their files, help & tasks, contacts or internet queries.
The Windows Media Player tile has been updated, featuring new control buttons, information about the song currently being played and a playlist function. However, these features are not known to work, as attempting to open a file will result in a MediaUXSrv.exe crash, followed by an Explorer crash, rendering the tile unusable.
A new Synchronize tile was added, which automatically synchronizes the data on the user’s computer with the data on the network.
The Quick Launch, Most Frequent Apps and User tiles have been shrunk down to match the content inside of them.
The Set sidebar & taskbar side options located in the sidebar context menu have been replaced with a Bar Settings option. This option opens an Avalon-based app where the user can select a pre-configured sidebar and taskbar setup, or their own configuration.
Tiles now also fade in and fade out when being added or removed.

Windows Explorer[edit | edit source]
The task view pane has been updated to feature a gray to blue gradient when viewing My Computer or the Control Panel in Classic View. The pane itself now features three documents in the background, along with a counter specifying how many items are in the currently viewed folder. The icon of the currently selected file, drive or folder is now also shown.
This is the earliest currently available build to contain 3D View, a feature that animates the desktop background and icons. It can be enabled by holding down the ⇧ Shift key, right clicking on a part of the desktop, selecting View and then enabling 3D View. When enabled, the wallpaper will animate and icons will spin around while being hovered over.

Installation[edit | edit source]
- This build’s
win32k.syscontains issues that prevent proper operation within the Preinstallation Environment, resulting in failed system installation attempts. To resolve this problem, a previous version ofwin32k.sysis required, which must be implemented by booting the installation media using Standard PC mode configuration. - On installations of this build with a clean disk, Setup will fail to create a
boot.inifile. Although booting will still be possible,NTLDRwill default toC:\WINDOWS. - The out-of-box experience crashes after selecting Next on the first page.

The sidebar will fail to render properly when adjusting the resolution.

This is Windows Longhorn Build 4011 (4011.main.030305-2045) in VMware Workstation Pro (mostly). This is a Milestone 4 which was compiled on 2003-03-05 and expires on 2004-03-01 and was made available on 32 July 2006. I had DCE working in this build, but only for a little while because it makes the OS more unstable. This build was quite a pain to install because I found out after hours of attempts that this build for whatever reason cannot be clean installed in VMware (thanks to NTLDR errors after finishing the second portion of setup). This can most likely be upgraded in VMware and I’m sure there’s easier ways of getting the OS to work, but my goal was to do a clean install and get DCE working.
How I got this to run:
I used VirtualBox 7.0.20 to get past the first portion of setup and VMware Workstation Pro 6.5 for the rest. You can use newer versions of VMware of course, but make sure backwards compatibility is set to version 6.5-7.0, but if you use newer versions than VMware than 6.5, DCE will not work.
Use Longhorn packet (which can be found off BetaArchive) and copy the .ISO’s files there and save it.
I first of all created the VMware VM, then created a VirtualBox VM using Server 2003 guest settings and attached the .vmdk file to that to run setup (don’t worry about setting the BIOS date yet if you plan on doing exactly what I did). Finish the first portion of setup, then once you get to the boot screen for the first time, immediately shut off the VM and switch to VMware.

Windows Longhorn was the pre-release codename for Windows Vista and was the successor to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (built from NT 5.2 codebase). Development on the OS started in May 2001 and went through two unique development cycles separated by a development reset in 2004. The reset occurred as Microsoft’s development staff had lost focus on the project as a whole and what was required to be done in order to bring it to market. Features were being written into the OS at an alarming rate with a significant lack of QA or vision of true requirement. This combined with Microsoft’s trustworthy computing initiatives caused the reset.
Several features of Longhorn planned that were actually shipped include the glass replicating Aero theme (which followed the Slate and Jade themes from earlier builds), along with the Windows Sidebar — although this was shipped as a standalone utility where as most builds (at least in pre-reset) shipped this as part of explorer.exe. Numerous improvements to the Windows Explorer, along with an updated Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, instant search, new 3-d games and other items made it into the final version of Windows Vista.
Release notes
Windows Longhorn existed as a continuation of the Windows 2003 codebase although after build 4094 development was reset; restarted from scratch as the original Longhorn builds were growing in complication (described as ‘a mess’) and Microsoft introduced a new focus on security. These are the pre-reset builds.
