I have a user who deleted some of her windows start up files. I now get a prompt that says "windows is bypassing your startup files" the screen is then black with a C:/
I tried changing the drive to the A:/ and running a startup disk but I keep receiving the error that I cannot run this command.
I cannot bypass this black screen …I need to at least be able to get to the recycle bin so i can restore the files she deleted. Is there a way to "trick" win98 into starting up w/out all the correct files??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I took a look at that site. However, I do not even have the start menu as an option. The entire screen is black w/the C:/ prompt.
I have to force a hard shutdown every time I want to restart it for troubleshooting purposes.
I ran the scandisk DOS command and that returns with no errors and then it goes back to the black screen that says "Windows is bypassing your startup files" C:/>>

Set the BIOS to A:\ as first boot device, and then Boot to A:\ from Startup disc….(i.e. dont boot to C:\ and then switch to A:\)
Then type
SYS C:

HOWEVER;
First go to C:\ ….type
CD Windows
press Enter

(or whatever she/he named the win directory)
now your at C:\Windows
Dir /p /o:n
press Enter

look for System.ini and Win.ini
if found type
Edit System.ini
view it to see if it looks normal
do the same with win.ini

also what does your msdos.sys look like? it is a hidden file so you will have to run attrib msdos.sys -s -h -r so you can look at it and possibly edit it if need be…all os this is possible if you can get the system to boot from the startup disk

Buckeye;
That’s why i kinda reposted right away;
first, she said that the files were deleted…meaning that she wouldn’t be able to get to a command prompt if msdos.sys was not there..
secondly, that message she’s getting.
thirdly, the SYS C: command will take care of that(usually), however, -without- System.ini and Win.ini…no Windows..
Yes it couldn’t hurt to look and see, and the msdos.sys file is on the Root (C:\) drive, just in case she wants to look…..good call on the attrib stuff, though.

rosie123;
You can "hold" the CTRL key or press F8(repeatedly) while booting…towards the end of POST, (right before Win logo would appear) to get to Win Startup menu,( SafeMode, Bootlog.txt, Step by Step, etc..)

To TekTippy4U and Buckeye;

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this type of verbage; but…isn’t this indicitive of a ‘sticky’ F5 key?

To rosie123;

Has any of the above suggestions helped or have you simply reinstalled?

As for the recycle bin—if my memory servers (and sometimes it doesn’t)—the files that are placed there are compressed and renamed. I personally would not suggest you attempt a "restore" from the Bin in DOS mode which sounds like what you are saying you want to do.

My suggestion to you falls along the same lines as TekTippy4U.

1) "Bypassing startup files" — Check the keyboard for sticky keys.

2) "Getting a C: prompt" — Obviously you have DOS Mode; so it narrows it further to a Windows’ problem. (also with #1 above if you press the F5 [or is it F8], you may also get that verbage.) Check following files: Autoexec.bat (last entry should be WIN), Win.com (should exist), System.ini (should have something like:
[boot]
shell=Explorer.exe
:try changing the "Explorer.exe" to "PROGMAN.EXE" and see if you can gain

ANY!! access to Windos. (if it does work you can exit program manager by clicking on File/Exit—just don’t forget to fix the System.ini file.

Let us know what works and what didn’t.

I ended up calling in a tech. He re-installed win98 after unsuccessfully trying many other methods. System.ini and Win.ini were missing and autoexec.bat needed to be modified. After 3 hours the workstation is finally up and running.

Thanx for the follow up rosie123, as the info will undoubtedly help us all. Glad to hear it’s up and running..

Hello, I tried to boot a computer with a boot disc. No matter what I try, DOS always bypasses windows. I have read every message concerning this problem in this forum. I have tried all the suggestions. Nothing seems to work. I do not have Restore CD’s. Please help!

#2

·

What do you mean «bypasses Windows»? That is what a startup disk is supposed to do — land you at an a: command prompt, not «Windows».

Perhaps you should explain your Windows problem further. Can you start in Safe Mode?

#3

·

After the troubleshooting tools have sucessfully loaded, I recieve the message that windows is loading. It then switches to Bypassing windows. Then:
To get help, type Help, then Enter
C:\

I have typed in everything I can think of and nothing works. I can’t reach Safe Mode.

#5

·

Be clear about what happens when you try to start either in normal mode or in Safe Mode. Forget about the boot disk for now.

If you get an error message, copy it EXACTLY.

Also when was the last time Windows started successfully? And what changes, if any, were made that led to the problem.

#6

·

WhitPhil, I am sorry, I must not be explaining the problem correctly. (Headache) It has been years since I worked with DOS and that was with Win95. I am trying to exit DOS and return to windows. I know this must be simple to do, yet I have typed:
exit
win
windows
win98
window

Every time I start the computer it gives me the option to start with or without the cd rom or type help. No matter which option i chose I receive:

Preparing to start windows
Bypassing windows
Not ready reading Drive A:\
Abort Retry Fail

if I choose Abort or Fail, it tells me Windows 98 start up disk could not create a temp drive for diagnose tools.
path not found :\command.exe
Path not found :\ extract.exe
Path not found :\readme.txt

The diagnostic tools successfully loaded to drive
Bad command or file name
File not found
For help, type Help and enter
C:\

When I try to start in Safe Mode:

Windows is bypassing your Startup files
(copyright info)
C:\

I am stuck at the C:\ prompt

The last time the computer started normally was before I used the boot disc.

#7

·

You gotta take the startup disk out of the drive, or it will reload itself EVERY time

#8

·

Yes, I realize I have to remove the start up disk.

: )

#9

·

Are you saying that all the information you posted above (post #6) is what you see with NO start up disk in the drive?

#10

·

Angel, Yes I am saying that is all I see. That is why I am confused.

#11

·

You said the system booted fine before you first tried using the startup disk. Why were you trying to accomplish by using a startup disk? What did you do after you first booted with the startup disk? Looks like the contents of the startup disk were copied to your hard disk or something wierd.

What happens when you type dir at the c:\ prompt (what do you see?)

#12

·

If you are just restarting rather than shutting down completely, do a complete shutdown and let it sit for a few seconds to ensure memory is flushed.

Also, normally if a startdisk was in the drive you would end up at an a: prompt not a c: prompt.

If you still end up at a c: prompt enter:

dir

and see if it reads the drive and you have a Windows directory.

If you do, enter:

cd windows

then you should be at

c:\windows

from there enter:

win

Also, you say you tried Safe Mode. Did you ever get a startup menu with numbered options that include command prompt, Safe Mode, etc…. ?

If you are having trouble shutting down completely as opposed to a ctrl-alt-del type of restart, try pressing and holding the power button down for about 8 seconds.

#13

·

dir gives me a list of all files/directory’s. I was actually trying to reset windows. The computer has so many bugs, worms, spys, ads, etc.. I had removed most of them. However, when windows started, Every programs, icon, link, shortcut, opened MS Works. I had already run all the system checks I could runs in windows. I began reading posts to this site. I followed instructions to create a boot disk from a safe computer.
I have also:scanreg /restore
sys /making a new MSDOS.sys file
And followed the instructions from several other posts here and tips from Win 98 Help on the safe computer.

#14

·

Ah ha! Rollin’ Rog, Himen.sys is missing! I know I saw a cure for that some place?

#15

·

I used:
A:\copy HIMEM.sys C:\windows

It still tells me HIMEM.sys is missing.

C:\windows dir shows hundreds of .dll files,

Any cl ues?

#16

·

Hi and welcome. In post #13 you mentioned that you were trying to ‘reset windows.’

I’m not quite sure what that means, can you explain that a bit more.

You also said you don’t have any restore cds. Do you have a Windows 98 installation cd?

And can you tell us EXACTLY how you got to this point. I’ve read the thread 3 times and I’m still confused

#17

·

If you have verified that Himem.sys is in c:\windows then do this:

Use your startup disk to return to a command prompt. If it takes you to the a: prompt enter:

c:

so that you are at the c:\> prompt. Then type and enter each line:

attrib -h -r -s msdos.sys
edit msdos.sys

What do you see? Does the msdos.sys file open in the editor?

It MUST contain the following lines at the top. NOTHING else must precede this. There can and should be other stuff below, but this is vital:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

If you do not see that at the top, create it, including the brackets around Paths.

If you see this line somewhere beneath:

BootGUI=0

… change the value to BootGUI=1

Then: In DOS after you edit it, hit alt+f to access the file/save and exit menu to save and exit.

Then try rebooting.

#18

·

attrib -h -r -s msdos.sys
Not Resetting Hidden File msdos.sys

Edit msdos.sys

has only one line:
;w98ebd

#20

·

It gave me the message I can’t modify a read only file.

#21

·

Try this, from the c: prompt enter each line:

attrib +r +h +s msdos.sys
attrib -r -h -s msdos.sys

Do you keep getting that same message? Very weird

If no error this time, try editing it again.

If necessary, delete it and create a whole new one.

#22

·

This time i was able to edit the msdos.sys. On the reboot? You guessed it….no go. I peeked at the autoexec.bat and the config.sys. I think they need a lot of work! I did try to copy the msdos.txt file, many times today.

I thank everyone for their help. I believe I have had enough for tonight! I’ll try again tomorrow.

#23

·

You don’t need config.sys and autoexec.bat at all. In fact to ensure the cause no errors you can do this, from the c: prompt enter:

ren autoexec.bat autoexec.xxx
ren config.sys config.xxx

Does msdos.sys show the correct information now? And are you receiving the same error on startup or a different one?

Keep trying the Safe Mode startup option, that’s the best chance of getting to Windows.

#24

·

Good Morning! The problem is 98% solved! I have one more question. The computer boots to Windows now but I have to select:
Load with CD Rom

Then it brings up the:
Can’t read Drive A
Abort? Retry? Fail?

After I select Fail, the computer loads windows. Any ideas?

#25

·

Start, run, type msconfig and hit enter. Do you have an autoexec.bat and config.sys file loading? If so, uncheck those two items, then reboot.

#26

·

I’m still confused, what did you do to get from where you were last to wherever you are now?

And can you get online with the current issues? If so, get HijackThis

Direct HijackThis download link: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

BUT, instead of posting the usual «scanlog» we ask for, post a «STARTUPLIST» instead. To do this select «Misc Tools», check «list minor sections» and then select «Generate Startuplist». Post that.

When I boot up during load up the screen says" windows is bypassing startup file". Then it boots to safe mode. Checked msconfig and systray.exe is checked. However, control-alt-delete shows only explorer running.

You have a driver problem of some kind. Look in Control Panel/System/DeviceManager and fix any device showing a yellow excamation mark.

  • #3

Click on RUN from the start menu on the desktop and type sfc and set the resulting window to check for corrupted files and then click to start it.

Restore any corrupted files it fines from your original Windows OS installation disk or from your hdd if you have them copied there.

  • #5

przero, I’d like to know why the hll you bumb this thread without at least the courtesy of telling us that our suggestions is suck.

If you can’t take the time to try what’s suggested and then give us some feed back you can forget about getting any more help.

  • #6

Sorry, I am working this problem over the phone. The modem did have a yellow question mark in device manager. The system however began to work properly. When they tried to sign on to ISP, the system hung. On reboot problem re-appeared. Now going to remove the modem from the board. Didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers, I always try all suggestions and appreciate the help. It’s just hard to try and solve via the phone. Bumped it to keep it fresh till I(WE) get it solved.

  • #7

Windows cannot find SFC. Rt. click "my computer" and "properties" to get to "device manager" and it opens "my documents". "Start/settings/control panel/ system" gives us "accessibility properties".

  • #9

Anybody got any ideas? Cannot get into My Computer/propeties. cannot open anything in Control Panel. How do I make it go to Startup file?

  • #10

Is there a sys C: command available from the WinMe startup disk? If so you could give that a try or some of the other startup disk utilities. Print the startup disk readme and/or text file from the startup disk and see what all is available.

  • #11

Sounds like ME is corrupted to the point where it needs to be reinstalled.

Just try to reinstall over existing set up.

I have win98se on desktop. I could not boot win98 on my desktop. I used startup disk to boot. It went to startup with cdrom or without. I chose startup with cdrom. It came up «The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive D» and A: prompt came out. I have 2 separate hard disc drives in the desktop.
Please help urgently. Thanks.
