This download includes an add-in for Microsoft Visual Studio® 2012. Windows Embedded Compact 2013 supports Visual Studio 2012 Professional, Premium, or Ultimate. If you don’t already have Visual Studio 2012 installed, you can download an evaluation copy of Visual Studio 2012 Professional from the Microsoft download center. Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 can be installed from here .
Windows Embedded Compact 2013 is an OS delivered by Microsoft for small footprint devices that require flexible hardware and hard realtime support. With Compact 2013, OEMs in Retail, Healthcare and Manufacturing can bring intelligent systems to market that stand out through attractive, intuitive user experiences and seamless connections to cloud services.
Developers can customize and build a broad range of small footprint specialized devices with real time capabilities by using Platform Builder, a powerful embedded-specific development tool that works as an add-in to the familiar development environment of Microsoft Visual Studio 2012.
Functionality:
This no-cost, downloadable Windows Embedded Compact 2013 toolkit gives you unrestricted access to all of Windows Embedded Compact 2013 and includes Platform Builder, the Compact Test Kit, and several board support packages for ARM and x86-based architectures so you can begin evaluating Windows Embedded Compact 2013 today. With the Compact 2013 toolkit, you can design, develop, build, and show prototype devices.
You will need to enter your full product license key during the installation.Important:
You need to accept the End User License Agreement in the installer before you can use this product. If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, you will not be able to install the product.

Windows Embedded Compact 2013 is also available for download as part of your MSDN subscription.

Before you install Windows Embedded Compact 2013, do the following:
• You have a recent, complete backup of your IDE computer.
• You have completely uninstalled any previous versions of Windows Embedded Compact and Platform Builder.
• You have your installation disks and product keys available.
• You have time to install the Compact 2013 Tools. The actual time depends on the number of features that you install. A full installation can take several hours.Note: Do not let your computer restart, hibernate, or sleep during this installation.
Install the Windows Embedded Compact 2013 developer tools
1. Insert the installation disk for Windows Embedded Compact 2013
2. Follow the instructions in the Compact 2013 installation wizard. On the Product Key page, enter your product key including the hyphens
3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, select Yes
4. After Compact 2013 completes the installation, you will have the opportunity to register for and install Windows Embedded Developer Update. Your response to this offer has no effect on the Compact 2013 installation.

Лицензирование
Благодаря особенностям в лицензировании для корпоративных клиентов (Enterprise customer) указанных в Customer License Agreement (CLA) и Program Execution Guide (PEG), вы можете поставить оборудование и Windows Embedded/IoT заказчику в следующих 3-х вариантах:
- С предустановленным приложением и Windows Embedded/IoT (для всех вариантов);
- Без предустановленного приложения, только с Windows Embedded/IoT (только для поставки корпоративному клиенту);
- Без предустановленного приложения и без предустановленной* Windows Embedded/IoT (только для поставки корпоративному клиенту);.
*При поставке конечному заказчику устройства без предустановленной Windows Embedded/IoT, наклейки COA в любом случае должны быть поставлены вместе с устройством путем размещения на устройстве либо, если это невозможно или нерационально, на сопровождающих носителях или документации. Также, необходимо предоставить образ операционной системы.

- Application Builder for Windows Embedded Compact 2013 заменяет Visual Studio for Devices (VSD);
- В Platform Builder меньше общих компонентов, упрощенна модель SYSGEN и начальная конфигурация.

Platform Builder for Windows® Embedded Compact 2013 (a plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio® 2012, 2013 and 2015) is an integrated development environment (IDE) for building customized embedded operating system designs. Platform Builder comes with all of the development tools needed to design, create, build, test, and debug your project.

Application Development Tools
To write applications for Windows® Embedded Compact 2013, Microsoft offers a familiar set of programming languages that use managed or unmanaged code. Microsoft Visual Studio® takes full advantage of the .NET Compact Framework, which uses public Internet standards to enable integration with new and existing applications running on any platform. Supported languages include Visual C++, Visual C#, and Visual Basic. Siliverlight technology is fully integrated as well.
The integrated ARM based Emulator helps you easily to test your CE image without having a hardware platform.

Development Process
We can divide between the device OS development and the application development. To start with the device development, you need a BSP (Board Support Package) from a board manufacturer or start with a built in standard BSP.
All needed drivers, configurations and settings are stored in the BSP. The more complete a BSP is, the less work you have to do! You can test your image via the device emulator. Don’t forget to choose the emulator BSP as well in your project.
After you have finished the OS design, you can export a SDK (Software Developmet Kit). The SDK contains the API-Set (Programmer Interface) supported through your Windows® Embedded Compact 2013 Image. An application developer can now install this SDK to write applications for your Windows® Embedded Compact 2013 Image and test it as well on the emulator first.

Windows Embedded Compact 2013 is the last version of Windows Embedded Compact, released on 13 June 2013.

- Snapshot boot, a feature that works by saving the state of the device to persistent storage and then restoring that state from the snapshot when the device reboots.
- Improved support for data binding.
- HTML Help viewer.
- To turn on this feature, a SYSGEN variable must be enabled. The selected one in question is SYSGEN_HELP.

- Support for MIPS, SuperH, ARMv5 and ARMv6 has been dropped.
- As part of streamlining the OS to focus on scenarios that would be most relevant to customers, the following features have been removed:

Although the OS utilizes the Windows Classic theme, the Luna theme is still available. The theme can be enabled in Core OS > Windows Embedded Compact > Shell and User Interface > User Interface > Customizable UI > Windows XP-like Sample Skin.
