Sometime in 2012, Microsoft is expected to announce its next major version of Windows for the client platform. It has the working name «Windows 8», and was previewed to developers at the BUILD Conference, this September. A member of Chinese tech site PCbeta community got to play with a newer build of Windows, build 8172. Screenshots of its most common user interface elements, such as desktop, Windows Explorer, PC Settings (control panel), etc., were posted. Engadget notes that these screenshots don’t reveal much else from the Windows Developer Preview shown at the BUILD Conference.

The first screenshot above reveals the Start screen featuring Metro UI design elements (which replaces the Start Menu), the second reveals PC Settings screen, which serves the purpose of the Windows Control Panel, and the next two screenshots reveal the Windows Explorer user interface with its «ribbon» element collapse and expanded.

The next screenshot (above), reveals the new file transfer dialog, which provides a little more information than just a progress bar, an animation, and a few numbers. The progress bar embeds a graph that reports transfer speeds in real time. Next up, is the new Task Manager, which gives greater control over running tasks and processes; and the final screen reveals the new sidebar, which makes the taskbar optional. In all, Microsoft plans some major UI changes, while retaining compatibility with many of the elements found in Windows 7, to ease the transition. The window titlebars themselves look identical in function to the ones Windows 7 gives you, but that there are some aesthetic changes. Basically every rounded-edge is sharpened out. The PCbeta member who leaked these screenshots confirmed that build 8172 is still pre-beta.

Another week, another Windows 8 leak. This time it’s the turn of PCBeta, who have revealed four new screenshots from a developer build. The version shown is build 8172.

The screenshots show off the new PC settings page, with links to customise notifications, searches and device access. The lock screen is also easily customisable from here, with apps able to run in the background and pop up notifications even when the device is locked. The settings screen carries on the Metro style that has been slowly making its way through Microsoft’s product line.

Two more screenshots show off the Windows 8 desktop with Explorer running. Microsoft has made it clear that the desktop will be accessible from the Metro screen, and Microsoft look like they’re still continuing with the ribbon theme that debuted in Office 2007. The ribbon can be expanded and hidden as the user wishes.

The final screenshot is a sparse-looking start page with only a few icons present. It’s easy to see how the start screen will vary in appearance depending on the computer, with apps and tiles populating the screen as the user adds more.

Thanks again to FaiKee, he has pointed out that these shots have been dismissed by Canouna of MDL, who is on a different source channel but PCBeta have been right in the past.

Update: We cannot confirm these shots are real, if anything it’s some eye candy for what’s to come, these are reportedly from the OEM channel. So make of it what you will :)

Update 2: This may explain the odd build number:

Update 3: Added some more screenshots to the gallery, as posted here by PCBeta.

Updated

Hope you weren’t expecting anything groundbreaking from the latest leaks of Windows 8, because so far as we can tell, build 8172 looks just about like the build we toyed with back at… BUILD. That said, these do look a wee bit more polished than earlier betas, and there are a few appreciated shots of the store and a new look for settings. If that kind of nerd-speak gets you all hot and bothered, head on down to the source link with your eyes peeled.
