About dialog

Windows 8 build 8064 is a build of Windows 8, which was released to Microsoft partners through the Ecosystem Engineering Access Program (EEAP) around 15 August 2011 and as is common for such builds coming from the fbl_eeap branch, it had the entire Metro user interface stripped out at compile time and therefore cannot be redpilled in its vanilla state. It was publicly uploaded onto a Google Drive account on 22 January 2021. The x64 version of this build was shared on 28 October 2024.

Prior to its upload, screenshots of its setup interface and their components’ file properties were shared to PCBeta on 16 August 2011.[1][2]

Changes[edit | edit source]

User interface[edit | edit source]

Milestone 3 preparation work[edit | edit source]

The first set of steps meant to accommodate the upcoming Developer Preview release — due for September 2011, the same time the then-upcoming Microsoft Build conference was set to take place — have been carried out. These changes include the arbitrary disablement of the semantic view zoom mode in the Start screen, the complete removal of ability to modify the Start screen color and accent design, as well as last-minute branding changes (such as updated boot screen image resources).

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

The default user profile images have been updated to use a generic, nondescript silhouette of a person positioned in front of a black background.

The name of the Slovak keyboard layout in the taskbar has been changed from «SVĆ» to «SLK».

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

Windows Setup[edit | edit source]

It is recommended to use the keyboard in order to navigate through the initial setup interface as a bug prevents the mouse cursor from being normally displayed.

OOBE[edit | edit source]

  • Like previous unredpilled builds of Windows 8, this build’s Windows 7 OOBE background is in monochrome on the left, and on the right, it is entirely black.

Windows 8 build 8064

В списке изменений к билду значатся:

  • Новые обои;
  • Новый BSOD;
  • Новый экран загрузки;
  • Новый вид подготовки к установке и WinPE;
  • Internet Explorer 10 Developer Preview;
  • Новая заставка Windows при установке;
  • Новые иконки WiFi/Ethernet;
  • Новая иконка Touch Keyboard;
  • Отсутствие Windows DVD Maker;
  • Отсутствие Windows Media Center;
  • Больше нет обоев Windows 7;
  • Новый пользовательский аватар;

If you’re a Windows enthusiast, you’ve likely spent the greater part of the last year scattering the Internet for information about what Microsoft is planning for the future of the platform. Today, we’re all getting to learn a little bit more, since yet another build of Windows 8 has surfaced, or should we rather say, leaked.

Although the build itself hasn’t leaked, Chinese website PCBeta has published a changelog and several screenshots, allegedly depicting the new build. The build number, 8064, also reveals that Microsoft is edging closer to reaching Milestone 3, the end of the current stage of the system’s development, and quickly heading to pre-beta stage. During said stage, Microsoft will hopefully improve Windows 8’s quality in order to get it ready for a widely available, perhaps public, beta build.

According to the changelog that leaked, Microsoft has continued the process of making Windows 8 more multi-touch friendly by bringing “immersive” user interfaces to more standard Windows features. The Control Panel, for example, is now an “immersive” application and will work right out of the box from Windows 8’s new full-screen multitouch and tablet-friendly user interface, which was first shown off earlier this year. Allegedly, Windows Remote Desktop has received the same treatment and is now a full-screen app.

According to the changelog, an early Developer Preview of Internet Explorer 10 was also added in, yet two other applications have been removed: Media Center and DVD Maker. It’s not surprising that the latter was removed, since it has never managed to gain the needed traction among Windows users. Media Center, on the other hand, had been at the cornerstone of Microsoft’s media strategy for a few years and it’s surprising to see it go, yet it perhaps won’t be needed anymore since Windows Media Player will likely be converted into a full-screen app and work essentially the way Media Center does today. There are a few other visual improvements scattered all across this new Windows 8 build, such as new icons, a new bootscreen that finally does away with the beta fish and a new installation screen, shown below.

Windows 8 Set Up

All the traditional “hidden” features are allegedly inaccessible in this build, at least through traditional methods. There will undoubtedly be new ways to expose secret features, yet none is currently available.

Windows 8 is expected to be shown off in its entirety at this year’s developer-oriented conference hosted by Microsoft, known as BUILD, which will take place between September 13th and the 16th. An experimental build will likely be handed out then.

Check out the whole change log and some more evidence below.

  • A new wallpaper (5th generation)
  • A new BSOD (2nd generation) (back to blue with a smiley : ( )
  • A new bootscreen (2nd generation) (betta fish is gone)
  • A new installprep and WinPE look. (5th generation)
  • Internet Explorer 10 Developer Preview (pre release version) (with Internet Explorer 10 splashscreen)
  • A new colored “Windows” splashscreen during installprep loading file.

Screenshots and a changelog have leaked from what appears to be the latest Milestone 3 (M3) developer release of Windows 8. This leak comes from PCBeta (and BetaArchive) and shows the Windows Developer Preview Setup, rumoured to come straight from Windows 8 build 6.2.8064.0.FBL_EEAP.110806-1000; which as the string suggests was built on August 6th. This would also nicely coincide with previous rumours that Windows 8 hit build 8063 on August 4.

The reported changelog is as follows:

  • A new wallpaper (5th generation)
  • A new BSOD (2nd generation) (back to blue with a smiley : ( )
  • A new bootscreen (2nd generation) (betta fish is gone)
  • A new installprep and WinPE look. (5th generation)
  • Internet Explorer 10 Developer Preview (pre release version) (with Internet Explorer 10 splashscreen)
  • A new colored «Windows» splashscreen during installprep loading file.
  • Immersive Remote Desktop (old)
  • Immersive Control Panel (old)
  • WinStore (old)
  • Windows 7 wallpaper deleted
  • New WiFi/Ethernet icons (old)
  • New Touch Keyboard icon
  • New genuine center (old)
  • Windows DVD Maker gone
  • Windows Media Center gone
  • New User avatar
  • New Advanced Security Setting tab (old)

OLD = Present in 80xx build

Curiously both Windows Media Center and DVD Maker appear to be gone from this build – both were (especially Media Center) loved features from Windows 7, so this quite likely is only part of the alleged developer preview build. It is also reported that the build is 100% locked and hidden features cannot be revealed through means used for previous leaked builds.

Microsoft is set to release more information about Windows 8 in an official manner at their BUILD conference between September 13 and 16, which Neowin will be attending.
