Disk2VHD Win 10 «Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware»
Experts,
short version:
I cannot get a Disk2vhd’d P2V’s OS to boot as a Windows guest (Linux host)…
Option 1
— I purchased an Intel box, Dell, refurbished. I have both a W7 Pro OA Product Key on a sticker on cabinet, and a W10 Pro (1903 installed) key from ShowKey, regedit, etc.
— When I run Disk2vhd, the resulting vhd, or vhdx converted to vdi with VBoxManage, won’t boot (UEFI shell).
— There is no EFI partition to use DISKPART on, so dead end.
Option 2
So, I tried to just install 1903 on a clean guest from a new ISO.
— But I cannot activate the guest’s OS.
— I tried the Windows 10 key, but the issue is that on my physical box: «Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware«
I can’t find any mention of anyone setting this in VB BIOS, but I’m posting anyway.
Is there a way to get Option 1 to work? A clean P2V into a VB guest would be best… Is there a 3rd option?

Are you 100% sure that your original Dell was booting in EFI mode? Did you select *all* the partitions when doing the Disk2VHD conversion?

No. system info on the running W10 says «Legacy». The UEFI shell comes from trying to boot the exported image in VBox. It ends up like this:

Oh FFS… I still had EFI enabled… Unchecked it, and the VMDK conversion (via VBoxManage) worked. I imagine all the rest will, too. Geez, no wonder the shell said UEFI!
Thanks @Socratis for making my remaining 2 brain cells bump into each other!
P.S. But I still can’t activate, as successfully booted VN in W10P says (see attached): Seems it still requires a digital license for activation. I didn’t expect the VBox bios to have the original W7Pro key (which I have from sticker on box), but how to activate from inside VBox is a problem not for this thread, I imagine…

BTW: The key shown above is a generic one that is all over the Internet. The system cannot be activated with just this key, as I think it is one of those generic upgrade keys. This is why ShowKeyPlus says this, and says yuo need an OEM key.
Think is, I have one for W7Pro, but how to apply?

Microsoft apparently allows activating Windows 10 with Windows 7 keys. I have done it several times. They must be 7 Home -> 10 Home, 7 Pro -> 10 Pro, etc.
If you have a Windows 7 Pro key that hasn’t been used, and the guest you’re trying to activate is Windows 10 Pro, you can go to the Windows 10 Activation page and change the guest’s product key. Google will show you how to do this.

«OEM key not present in firmware» probably means that this install of Windows is tied to the hardware to keep it from being migrated. Dell, HP, etc. do this, probably because the install was OEM, which is not to be moved to new hardware unlike retail, which can be moved. Virtualbox is new «hardware».
You could check out DMIdecode and the DMI editing commands in Vboxmanage, See the manual.

This didn’t work, no matter which formats I converted the vhd to. I was contemplating grabbing a w7pro iso, and going that route, but found I didn’t have any official ones lying around. So I just activated the converted VM. And when I checked the w7pro key in ShowKeyPlus, it said invalid, so… Who knows.

This is why I posted here, mostly. I thought that someone smart would know a way to have vb emulate the environment the guest OS is looking at.

Your product key is node locked to HP. You could try fiddling with the DMI information (almost certainly without success), but it would probably be cheaper to get a new license on eBay.

Thanks for writing, @mpack.
I just activated the VM with KMSpico, as I have both keys. You have me curious now about DMI… I will learn what I can, and if there is any joy or progress, I’ll be back to share.
P.S. I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know the values, or what the group of values are called, that the guest is looking to the host to provide in it’s boot environment for verifying pre-installed OSes, as in the above example? Any hints appreciated!

P2V: How to recreate conditions of MB licensing in a VM?

Experts,
I have HP boxes that have been upgraded from W7 (mostly) to W10. I have both licenses. I want to take a P2V’d machine ,and make it happy in a VM, but there is a snag.
The VM knows it is not on the original hardware, and does not recognize either the old W7 or new W10 keys.
How can I adjust the BIOS/SMBIOS/DMI/… in my VM to make the VM happy?
I see this as 2 steps:
1. Find where the code/data is burned to the MB (BIOS?), and…
2. Use VBoxManage and DMI (?) to enter these same values into a VM’s «motherboard» (prob something like this)

Product: HP EliteDesk 800 G1

Hello community.
I have an issue with a refurnished HP EliteDesk 800 G1 which had Windows 10 Pro installed when we bought it, but originally came with Windows 7. The issue is that after the setup and updates, Windows is still saying that it isn’t activated. I managed to retrieve what I believe is the OEM licence that came with it using ShowKeyPlus, which one of your community expert members mentioned in another post. I used this key to both attempt to activate the curently installed Windows 10 Pro and to download the Windows 7 ISO from the Microsoft website (after reading that the OEM key only works with W7 that came with the PC), and in both attempts it gives an error.
So my questions is: Is there another way to activate Windows 10 Pro using the OEM licence it originally came with? And is it possible to download the OEM version of Windows 7 in order to try the licence key I retrieved?

Hi,
Those two key retrievel software give the same result as the one in the Windows registry, I assume because that’s where the software is getting the information from.
Thanks for the link for the Windows 7 download, I’ll try that now and see if the key works when attempting to install W7.

Unfortunately I cannot dowload a copy of Windows 7 yet as the available keys for the month have been used, so I will need to wait till next month.

Most Elitedesk 800 G1’s should have either a W8 Pro or W8.1 Pro product key in the BIOS.
What OEM version of Windows does the Showkey plus report indicate?
It should be W8 or W8.1.
This is what my PC’s showkey plus report indicates…
OEM Edition: Win 8.1 RTM Professional OEM:DM
Once you let me know, that, I will give you a free way to install W8.1 Pro and then from there, you should most likely be able to upgrade for free to W10 Pro.

You’re very welcome.
You won’t be able to activate Windows without a key.
If you are finding a W7 installed key, most likely it is a volume license key, and those can’t be used to activate an installation no matter what.
You have nothing to lose by trying it of course.
You are probably going to have to buy a copy of Windows.

In the last year I bought a used HP p6501f desktop that had Windows 7 originally but was updated to Windows 10 when I got it. I put a new 1tb drive in it, downloaded a Windows 7 ISO from MS, installed that, then used the product key from the COA sticker on the case. I got a message from MS that I needed to call them with a code they provided which I entered, then they gave me another code to enter(which I did) and I then saw that Windows was activated and that it is Genuine Windows. I recently bought a used HP p6320f empty case only and built my own( Gigabyte MB, AMD 6350 processor, Crucial 8gb RAM and a generic multi format optical drive) in the case. I used the previously downloaded Win 7 ISO and the product key on the case ‘s COA sticker. I had to go through the same process with the code they gave me, I called in and they gave me a new code to enter and Win7 was activated and Genuine. Hope this helps in some way and if you have the COA sticker on the case you should get it working. If you don’t see a COA sticker look very closely on the back it may have a Windows 8/8.sticker for which I know not how to obtain the product key,sorry.

Hi all,
I installed Windows 10 dvd on an old notebook which was running vista(it means I cleaned the hard disk and installed Windows 10 dvd). However win 10 has a minor problems. I’m an insider, so I checked build 10240 and 10547(upgraded last week by windows update). When I checked with showkeyplus, it says «Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware». I suspect it be embedded in SLIC, but I don’t know how to get rid of the «marker».
How can I remove it?

You can’t, it’s part of the manufacturer programmed bios firmware that doesn’t get changed with a standard bios upgrade. Just curious, why do you want to?

I have minor problems with this notebook which I don’t have with the desktop; With this notebook, when I installed build 10240, hitting start button, some items (settings, file explorer) are missing. It varies time to time. Recently upgrading to 10547 (I was given 2-3 weeks ago, so it was about 10 days ago), when I boot, the login screen doesn’t accept the password; after ctrl+alt+del, login screen accepts password. It is as if Windows were blocking intentionally.
So I suspect something wrong with this notebook exist. So this notebook isn’t reliable. When write the first message, I checked the product key with ShowKeyPlus and found it’s BBBBB-BBBBB-…(all B’s) in other words, the value is zero. And at the same time I got a message «Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware». Note this notebook had Windows Vista before. So I suspect this harm.
On the desktop (normally behaving), showkeyplus says «OEM key not found in the firmware».
What is wrong with notebook do you think ?

To solve the ctrl+alt+del issue:
1. Win+R key to bring up run dialog
2. Type netplwiz and enter
3. Click the advanced tab in the user accounts window that opens.
4. Bottom section, uncheck «require users to press ctrl+alt+del»My laptop also has the Windows 7 marker and it shouldn’t interfere with anything. I think that was just the preparation Microsoft and the computer manufacturers were making to store Windows 8 product keys in bios.

Thank you for ctrl+alt+del problem. But it was unchecked from the beginning. So I cannot fix this. This notebook still requires ctrl+alt+del. Especially when rebooting, the whole screen flicks black and white twice or 3 times, then initial screen appears. Then ctrl+alt+del is required….so I suspect windows 10 is intentionally doing this.
What can I do? I’m at a loss.
Looking at SLIC-toolkit (advanced tab), only «No OEM Certificate found» is red, but this is no longer OEM, so I don’t mind.
Now I’m doing «dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:wim:f:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess» for sure. Am I off the point?

It appears you clean installed windows 10 10240 on a blank HDD without a prior windows 10 (Preview) activation or an upgrade from a qualifying OS (Windows 10 upgrade activation)

Microsoft changed the rules after the consumer release went out. You have to do the free upgrade and activate Windows 10 on that hardware to be able to do a clean install. Even the Insider Preview. Or install and activate a Retail version first. Then opt in for insider builds. My guess is its to stop you from running the Insider preview for free for ever. 10240 confused things as it had no watermark and showed as activated. A glitch I think. If you never upgraded in the first place, and originally clean installed the Insider Preview, if you do a clean install now and it won’t activate. It’s confusing and very hard to explain. Вопросы про активацию Windows 10 — среди наиболее часто задаваемых пользователями: как активируется система, где брать ключ активации для чистой установки Windows 10 на компьютер, почему у разных пользователей одинаковые ключи и на другие подобные комментарии приходится регулярно отвечать.
И вот, спустя два месяца после релиза, Microsoft опубликовала официальную инструкцию с информацией о процессе активации новой операционной системы, все основные моменты из него, связанные с активацией Windows 10 я изложу ниже. Также вы можете использовать Windows 10 и без активации, см. Какие есть ограничения при работе в Windows 10 без активации.
Начиная с прошлого года Windows 10 поддерживает активацию по ключу Windows 7, 8.1 и 8. Сообщалось, что такая активация перестанет работать с выходом Anniversary Update, но она продолжает оставаться работоспособной, в том числе для новых образов 1903 при чистой установке. Обновления в активации Windows 10 в версии 1607 (сохраняется и в версии 1903 2019)
Начиная с августа 2016 года, в Windows 10 лицензия (полученная путем бесплатного обновления с предыдущих версий ОС) привязывается не только к идентификатору оборудования (что описано в следующем разделе этого материала), но и к данным учетной записи Microsoft при ее наличии.
Это, как сообщает Майкрософт, должно помочь в решении проблем с активацией, в том числе и при серьезном изменении оборудования компьютера (например, при замене материнской платы компьютера).
В случае, если активация оказалась не успешной, в разделе параметров «Обновление и безопасность» — «Активация» появится пункт «Устранение неполадок при активации», который, предполагается (лично пока не проверено), будет учитывать вашу учетную запись, лицензии, закрепленные за ней, а также количество компьютеров, на которых используется эта лицензия.
Привязка активации к учетной записи Майкрософт происходит автоматически к «главной» учетной записи на компьютере, в этом случае в информации об активации в параметрах Windows 10 версии 1607 и выше вы увидите сообщение о том, что «Система Windows активирована с помощью цифровой лицензии, привязанной к вашей учетной записи Майкрософт».
Если же вы используете локальную учетную запись, то ниже в том же разделе параметров вам будет предложено добавить учетную запись Microsoft, к которой и будет привязана активация.
При добавлении, ваша локальная учетная запись заменяется аккаунтом Майкрософт, а лицензия оказывается привязанной к ней. По идее (тут я не гарантирую), вы можете удалить учетную запись Майкрософт после этого, привязка должна остаться в силе, хотя в сведениях об активации информация о том, что цифровая лицензия привязана к учетной записи исчезает.
Цифровая лицензия как основной способ активации (Digital Entitlement)
Официальная информация подтверждает то, что было известно и ранее: те пользователи, которые бесплатно обновились с Windows 7 и 8.1 до Windows 10 или купили обновление в Windows Store, а также те из них, которые участвуют в программе Windows Insider, получают активацию без необходимости ввода ключа активации, через привязку лицензии к оборудованию (в статье Microsoft это названо Digital Entitlement, каков будет официальный перевод я пока не знаю). Обновление: официально это называется Цифровое разрешение.
Что это означает для обычного пользователя: после того, как вы единожды обновились до Windows 10 на вашем компьютере, она автоматически активируется при последующих чистых установках (если вы обновлялись с лицензии).
И в будущем вам не нужно изучать инструкции на тему «Как узнать ключ установленной Windows 10». В любой момент вы можете создать загрузочную флешку или диск с Windows 10 официальными средствами и запустить чистую установку (переустановку) ОС на том же компьютере или ноутбуке, пропуская ввод ключа везде, где его требуют: активация системы произойдет автоматически после подключения к Интернету.
Самостоятельный ввод подсмотренного ранее после обновления ключа при установке или после нее в свойствах компьютера в теории может даже навредить.
Важное примечание: к сожалению, не всё всегда проходит гладко (хотя обычно — да). Кому нужен ключ активации Windows 10
Теперь о том, что касается ключа активации: как уже было сказано, пользователи, которые получили Windows 10 путем обновления не нуждаются в этом ключе (более того, как многие могли заметить, на разных компьютерах и у разных пользователей может быть один и тот же ключ, если посмотреть его одним из известных способов), так как успешная активация зависит от него.
Ключ продукта для установки и активации необходим в случаях, когда:
- Вы купили коробочную версию Windows 10 в магазине (ключ располагается внутри коробки).
- Вы купили копию Windows 10 у авторизированного ритейлера (в интернет-магазине)
- Вы приобрели Windows 10 через Volume Licensing или MSDN
- Вы приобрели новое устройство с предустановленной Windows 10 (обещают наклейку или карточку с ключом в комплекте).
Как видите, на текущий момент времени мало кому нужен ключ, а у тех, кому нужен, он, вероятнее всего есть и вопрос о том, где найти ключ активации не стоит.

Активация после изменения конфигурации оборудования
Важный вопрос, который многих интересовал: а как будет срабатывать «привязанная» к оборудованию активация, если поменять то или иное оборудование, особенно если замена касается ключевых компонентов компьютера?
Microsoft отвечает и на него: «Если вы обновились до Windows 10, используя бесплатное обновление, а после этого произвели значительные аппаратные изменения вашего устройства, например, замену материнской платы, Windows 10 может больше не активироваться. За помощью по активации обратитесь в службу поддержки».
Обновление 2016: судя по имеющейся информации, начиная с августа текущего года лицензию Windows 10, полученную в рамках обновления, можно будет привязывать к вашей учетной записи Майрософт. Делается это в целях облегчения активации системы при изменении конфигурации оборудования, а вот как именно будет работать — еще посмотрим. Возможно, удастся и перенести активацию на полностью другое железо.
Заключение
Сначала отмечу, что все это касается только пользователей лицензионных версий систем. А теперь краткая выжимка по всем вопросам, связанным с активацией:
- Для большинства пользователей на данный момент ключ не требуется, его ввод нужно пропустить при чистой установке, если она потребовалась. Но это сработает только после того, как вы уже получали Windows 10 путем обновления на этом же компьютере, и система была активирована.
- Если ваша копия Windows 10 требует активации ключом, то либо он у вас есть и так, либо произошла какая-либо ошибка на стороне центра активации (см. справку по ошибкам, выше).
- При изменении конфигурации оборудования активация может не сработать, в этом случае необходимо связаться со службой поддержки Microsoft.
- Если вы участник Insider Preview, то все последние сборки будут активироваться автоматически для вашей учетной записи Microsoft (лично мной не проверено, работает ли это для нескольких компьютеров, из доступной информации тоже осталось не совсем понятным).
