This week, we announced the release of Windows 10, version 1903 and Windows Server, version 1903. As you look to deploy these feature updates in your organization, I want to tell you about some changes we are making to the way Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and System Center Configuration Manager download feature and quality updates.
In order to deploy feature and quality updates to devices running Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows Server, version 1903 (and later), you will need to ensure that you are running the current branch of System Center Configuration Manager, which is version 1902. Then, in the Configuration Manager console, enable the Software Update point to download updates for Windows 10, version 1903 and later and/or Windows Server, version 1903 and later.
Note: Once you make this change, updates will be available for version 1903 and later versions of the Windows 10 and Windows Server operating systems.

Figure 2. Selecting Windows Server, version 1903 and later in Configuration Manager, version 1902.
If you are using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to deploy updates to devices running Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows Server, version 1903 (and later), you will need to select a new product category to sync and download updates. To make this change in WSUS, open the Update Services administrator console, select Options > Products and Classifications, and, in the Products tab, select Windows 10, version 1903 and later and/or Windows Server, version 1903 and later.
Note: Once you make this change, updates will be available for version 1903 and later versions of the Windows 10 and Windows Server operating systems.

Will a new product category be created for each future release of Windows 10 or Windows Server?
No. We plan to service future releases of Windows 10 and Windows Server with the Windows 10, version 1903 and later and Windows Server, version 1903 and later product categories.
Why does this category need to be manually configured in Configuration Manager, version 1902 and WSUS?
With Windows 10, version 1903, we are introducing new product categories to enable future support for the Unified Update Platform (UUP) for on-premises management solutions, which provides improved delivery technologies for Windows updates. A configuration change is, therefore, required for environments running the latest public release of Configuration Manager, as well as for environments using WSUS (without Configuration Manager) for updates. (Note: UUP for on-premises management solutions is not yet available. We will have future news regarding UUP, including a public preview, at a later date.)
I am using Configuration Manager, version 1810. Can I deploy updates to Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows Server, version 1903?
No. In order to deploy updates to Windows 10, version 1903 or or Windows Server, version 1903 devices, Configuration Manager, version 1902 or later is required. We recommend that you update to the current branch as soon as possible to ensure that your Windows 10, version 1903 devices receive the targeted quality updates.
Will I have to select a new option each time Windows 10, Windows Server, or Configuration Manager is updated?
No. We plan to automatically add this new category to software update point (SUP) synchronization configurations and existing automatic deployment rules (ADRs) upon upgrade to the next version of Configuration Manager in environments in which Windows 10 updates are currently being synchronized.

Windows 10 1903: This blog post will help you enable the new product category called Windows 10 1903 and newer in your WSUS environment.
Challenge
In May 2019, Microsoft introduced new product categories in WSUS, to enable future support for the Unified Update Platform (UUP) for on-premise management solutions, ie. CapaInstaller
One of the new product categories is called Windows 10 1903 and later. The category contains all updates for Windows 10 1903 and later (except feature updates).
Because the category is not enabled by default, Windows 10 versions from 1903 and onward are not being patched from the Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) environment.
Technology
Generally speaking, the Unified Update Platform (UUP) is an improved delivery technology for Windows Updates. The technology can service all Windows-based devices, such as computers, tablets, smartphones, etc.
One of the major benefits of the UUP technology is, that the download of updates is now “differential” and not “full” like before. This decreases the download size of updates by up to 35%.
Another benefit of the UUP technology is, that it can handle the preservation of Language Packs (LP) and Features On Demand (FOD) across feature updates – also known as Windows 10 in-place upgrades (IPU).
Because many of our customers already have experienced various issues with the preservation of language packs and features on demand across feature updates, we have released our Windows 10 IPU service that solves many of these issues (and other issues as well)
History
The UUP technology is not new – it was introduced in December 2016. Microsoft has used the last couple of years to make the technology faster and more robust.
You can read more about the technology by following the link below.
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/11/03/introducing-unified-update-platform-uup/
Solution
Fortunately, the solution is fairly simple.
You just have to enable the new product category called Windows 10 1903 and later in your WSUS environment.
According to Microsoft, they will not be adding further product categories for Windows 10 to WSUS in the future. Hence, they will not add options to select updates for each release, because the current option covers Windows 10 operating systems from version 1903 and onward.
You can read more about the option by following the link below.

Microsoft finally released its latest Windows 10 build 1903, now called May Update, last week, much delayed from its initial scheduled release in March after suffering a number of upgrade issues.
If you are in a corporate network where all updates are done through a WSUS server, here is what you need to do.
First of all, there is a new product category available in WSUS that you will need to check so the related updates can be downloaded.
Open WSUS administrator console, go to Options > Products and Classifications. And in the Products tab, check both Windows 10 and Windows 10, version 1903 and later options.
The reason behind this change, as Microsoft stated:
With Windows 10, version 1903, we are introducing new product categories to enable future support for the Unified Update Platform (UUP) for on-premises management solutions, which provides improved delivery technologies for Windows updates. A configuration change is, therefore, required for environments running the latest public release of Configuration Manager, as well as for environments using WSUS (without Configuration Manager) for updates.
But that’s not enough, you will also need to check the Upgrades category in Classifications tab if you haven’t done so.
Usually, only Feature Update to Windows 10 (consumer editions) version 1903 is what you probably need. So what we do next is to approve it only to the computers eligible for the upgrade.
Also, if you are wondering what’s the difference between a business edition and consumer edition, business editions apply to Volume License media installations while the consumer editions are the OEM/Retail version that usually comes with the new PC you bought from HP, Levono, or Dell.
According to Microsoft, you need to make a change to your WSUS or Configuration Manager settings once users in your company start upgrading to Windows 1903, also known as the 2019 Spring Update.
In Configuration Manager, make sure you’re running at least version 1902 of System Center Configuration Manager. In addition to Windows 10, you also need to check the following new options in Software Update Point Component Properties:
- Windows 10, version 1903 and later
- Windows Server, version 1903 and later
In WSUS, open the Update Services console, then Options > Products and Classifications. In the Products tab, select
- Windows 10, version 1903 and later
- Windows Server, version 1903 and later
If you don’t do this, updates intended for the current versions of Windows 10 and Windows Server may not be reliably applied. This is a mandatory change.
Microsoft is doing this to enable future support for their Unified Update Platform. While that isn’t ready yet, it will provide “improved delivery technologies” for Windows updates. So this is just laying the groundwork for more efficient updates in the future.
