After months of testing, the Remote Desktop app for Windows 10 is finally out after Microsoft began beta testing the app back in December, using Insider feedback to improve its user experience
This app was only available to those who had installed the Microsoft Remote Desktop Preview app. As Microsoft finishes the preview phase, the app is now universal and replaces the 8.1 version for devices running both Windows 10 and Windows 10 mobile.
After a few months working on the core feature set, we’re excited to bring the app out of preview so everyone on a Windows 10 device, whether that be a desktop, tablet, phone or through Continuum for phone can benefit from the same great experience.
The Remote Desktop for Windows 10 allows you to connect to a remote PC from anywhere and get your work done wherever you are, a great tool for professionals on the go. In order to use the Remote Desktop app, you have to first configure your PC for remote access. Download the app to your PC, install it and you will be able to access your computer from everywhere.

Microsoft’s efforts to improve the app and roll it out as soon as possible are appreciated. However, it seems that Remote Desktop app runs terribly in Continuum mode. The app works slower than similar remote connection apps, and mouse interaction is not at all precise. Users complain that in Continuum mode, they can only use the app for basic tasks, severely limiting their output.
We suggest you first use this workaround to fix Continuum problems in Windows 10 and then launch Remote Desktop in Continuum mode to see if the issues have been fixed.

The Insider version of the official Microsoft Remote Desktop UWP app for Windows 10 received a pretty big update this week. The app now supports light and dark modes, adds ARM64 support, and much more. The app also now uses the same RDP core engine as its macOS and mobile counterparts.
Here’s a look at the full release notes:
- Rewrote the client to use the same underlying RDP core engine as the iOS, macOS, and Android clients.
- Added support for the Azure Resource Manager-integrated version of Windows Virtual Desktop.
- Added support for x64 and ARM64.
- Updated the side panel design to full screen.
- Added support for light and dark modes.
- Added functionality to subscribe and connect to sovereign cloud deployments.
- Added functionality to enable backup and restore of workspaces (bookmarks) in release to manufacturing (RTM).
- Updated functionality to use existing Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) tokens during the subscription process to reduce the number of times users must sign in.
- Updated subscription can now detect whether you’re using Windows Virtual Desktop or Windows Virtual Desktop (classic).
- Fixed issue with copying files to remote PCs.
- Fixed commonly reported accessibility issues with buttons.

Remote Desktop has been a feature in Windows for a really long time. It allows for you to remote into and use a Windows computer from another Windows computer remotely as if you were sitting down at that computer directly. This is a feature used by many Developers and IT Pros for various reasons such as installing updates, troubleshooting support issues, or just using a Virtual Machine (VM) that is hosted on a server or even in Microsoft Azure. The Remote Desktop Preview app in the Windows Store bring Remote Desktop capabilities to the Microsoft HoloLens as well as any other Windows 10 device.

Here’s a short video I recorded demonstrating the Windows 10 Remote Desktop Preview app from the Windows Store running on a Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition. In this video I’m remoting into a Surface Pro running a Windows 10 Inside Preview build. I also have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse paired with the HoloLens allowing for text input and mouse interaction on the Remote Desktop PC through the HoloLens.
P.S. Yes, that’s an original Microsoft Surface Pro I’m using. Seemed fitting to use a first generation Surface Pro with a first generation Microsoft HoloLens.
