My response:
I asked Georges if he would like me to connect to his computer using
my remote desktop support service to have a closer look, and he agreed.
Everything Georges said was true. I did more research on the topic and found other people complaining of the same issue. To make things worse, the
HP Laserjet 1200 printer driver website offers 6 different drivers, including «Driver-Universal Print Driver» (with either PCL6 or Postscript drivers), «Driver-Universal Print Driver» (with 2 more programs), «Driver-USB», and «Software-Universal Print Driver» — with absolutely no indication of which you’re supposed to install.
Needless to say, I tried every single one of those drivers and none of them worked.
How to Fix: HP Laserjet 1200 Won’t Recognize in Windows 10
After a bit more research, I made some headway.
As I mentioned, there are 6 different drivers on the HP Laserjet 1200 driver website. The way I got it to work was to install the «HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver» first, then install another driver over top of that. From what I understand, the «HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver» creates a virtual printer port, then that piggybacks onto the actual print driver. If you don’t install the «HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver» first, the printer driver simply doesn’t work.
Here is what I did, step by step:
- Download and install the «HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver» first.
- Next, download and install the «HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript (64-bit)»
from HP’s site: expand the «Driver-Universal Print Driver» heading
and grab from there. I can’t link directly to the file because they keep
changing the version which would make my direct link invalid.
- During the installation, choose «Traditional printing».
- On the next page, choose the last option which allows you to specify the printer port; select the «USB HP dot4» printer port.
- After the install finishes, load up Notepad or Word, type in «test», then go to File -> Print and try printing the page
to the HP Laserjet 1200.
- If it prints garbage characters, repeat the steps above, but
install the PCL6 driver instead:
expand the «Driver-Universal Print Driver» heading and grab from
there. I can’t link directly to the file because they keep changing the
version which would make my direct link invalid.
- If it prints properly, then click Start -> Control Panel -> «Devices and Printers». Locate the HP Laserjet 1200 printer, right click it, and select «Set as Default Printer»
I hope that helps — it literally took me 1.5 hours to figure this out. Needless to say, Georges was very happy for my
service.

There are few reasons due to which HP Laserjet 1200 Won’t Recognize in Windows 10 issue may arise. Initially, switch off the system and switch it on as it might be a simple connection issue.
Now, before proceeding towards more intense troubleshooting steps, do the following. Link your Printer to the computer and then switch it on. Connect your printer to the WiFi network if it is a wireless printer.
Other methods to resolve the HP LaserJet 1200 Printer will not work with Windows 10 issue include the below-mentioned points:
Run troubleshooter and follow the steps it suggests.
Uninstall Printer and reinstall it.
Clear Spooler.
Most of the times, it is resolved by installing the correct printer driver. If it is not recognizing, install “HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver,” then install another driver over that. The driver creates a virtual printer port, then that stores itself onto the real print driver. Follow the following points for a step by step guide:
Download and install “HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver.”
Download and install the “HP Universal Print Driver for Windows Postscript (64-bit).”
Choose “Traditional Printing” when the window prompts.
Select the printer port “USB HP dot 4” to specify the printer port.
After the installation end, open Word or Notepad, type “test” and go to File > Print > and try printing.
In case it prints garbage characters, repeat the steps but install “PCL6 driver.”
In case it prints properly, click Start > Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
Locate the HP Laserjet 1200, right click on it and set it as your default printer.

I am using Windows 10 (64bit) and I would like to use my old printer laserjet 1200. I am using the USB port for connecting the printer to the laptop. Does it work?
On HP web site I found 4 different sw to allow my printer to work again:
— Universal Print Driver for Win PCL6 (64 bit);
— Universal Print Driver for Win PostScript (64 bit);
— Laserjet USB (DOT4) comunication driver for win 8 and higher (64 bit);
— print administrator resource kit.
Wich one have I to download and install?

Если и у вас не работает должным образом принтер в Windows 10, в этой инструкции — один официальный и несколько дополнительных способов, которые могут помочь исправить возникшую проблему. Также приведу дополнительную информацию, касающуюся поддержки принтеров популярных марок в Windows 10 (в конце статьи). Диагностика проблем с принтером от Microsoft
Прежде всего, можно попробовать автоматическое решение проблем с принтером, используя утилиту диагностики в панели управления Windows 10, либо скачав ее с официального сайта Microsoft (отмечу, что я точно не знаю, будет ли отличаться результат, но насколько смог понять, оба варианта равнозначны).
Для запуска из панели управления, зайдите в нее, затем откройте пункт «Устранение неполадок», затем в разделе «Оборудование и звук» выберите пункт «Использование принтера» (еще один путь — «зайти в устройства и принтеры», а затем, кликнув по нужному принтеру, если он есть в списке, выбрать «Устранение неполадок»). Также для запуска инструмента устранения неполадок принтера можно скачать файл с официального сайта Microsoft здесь.
В результате запустится диагностическая утилита, которая в автоматическом режиме проверит наличие всех типичных проблем, которые могут препятствовать правильной работе вашего принтера и при обнаружении таких проблем исправит их.
В числе прочего будет проверено: наличие драйверов и ошибки драйверов, работы необходимых служб, проблемы соединения с принтером и очереди печати. Несмотря на то, что гарантировать положительный результат тут нельзя, рекомендую попробовать использовать этот способ в первую очередь.
Добавление принтера в Windows 10
Если автоматическая диагностика не работает или же ваш принтер и вовсе не отображается в списке устройств, можно попробовать добавить его вручную, причем для старых принтеров в Windows 10 имеются дополнительные возможности обнаружения.
Кликните по значку уведомлений и выберите «Все параметры» (а можно нажать клавиши Win + I), затем выберите «Устройства» — «Принтеры и сканеры». Нажмите кнопку «Добавить принтер или сканер» и подождите: возможно, Windows 10 сама обнаружит принтер и установит драйвера для него (желательно, чтобы Интернет был подключен), возможно и нет.
Во втором случае, нажмите по пункту «Необходимый принтер отсутствует в списке», который появится под индикатором процесса поиска. У вас появится возможность выполнить установку принтера по другим параметрам: указать его адрес в сети, отметить что ваш принтер уже стар (в этом случае его поиск системой будет осуществлен с измененными параметрами), добавить беспроводный принтер.
Не исключено, что данный способ сработает для вашей ситуации.
Установка драйверов принтера вручную
Если пока ничего не помогло, зайдите на официальный сайт производителя вашего принтера и найдите в разделе «Поддержка» (Support) доступные драйвера для вашего принтера. Хорошо, если они для Windows 10. Если же таковые отсутствуют, можно попробовать для 8 или даже 7. Скачайте их себе на компьютер.
Прежде чем запускать установку, рекомендую зайти в Панель управления — устройства и принтеры и, если там уже имеется ваш принтер (т.е. он определяется, но не работает), кликнуть по нему правой клавишей мыши и удалить из системы. И уже после этого запускать установщик драйвера. Также может помочь: Как полностью удалить драйвер принтера в Windows (рекомендую сделать это перед переустановкой драйвера).
Информация по поддержке Windows 10 от производителей принтеров
Ниже я собрал информацию о том, что пишут популярные производители принтеров и МФУ о работе своих устройств в Windows 10.
- HP (Hewlett-Packard) — компания обещает, что большинство ее принтеров будут работать. Те, которые работали в Windows 7 и 8.1 не потребуют обновления драйверов. В случае возникновения проблем, можно будет загрузить драйвер для Windows 10 с официального сайта. Дополнительно, на сайте HP имеется инструкция по решению проблем с принтерами этого производителя в новых ОС: http://support.hp.com/ru-ru/document/c04755521
- Epson — обещают поддержку принтеров и МФУ в Windows Необходимые драйверы для новой системы можно загрузить со специальной страницы http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportWindows10.jsp
- Canon — по информации производителя, большинство принтеров будут поддерживать новую ОС. Драйверы можно скачать с официального сайта, выбрав нужную модель принтера.
- Panasonic — обещают выпустить драйверы для Windows 10 в ближайшем будущем.
- Xerox — пишут об отсутствии проблем с работой их устройств печати в новой ОС.
Если ничто из вышеописанного не помогло, рекомендую воспользоваться поиском Google (причем рекомендую именно этот поиск для данной цели) по запросу, состоящего из названия марки и модели вашего принтера и «Windows 10». Очень вероятно, что на каких-либо форумах уже обсуждалась ваша проблема и было найдено ее решение. Не бойтесь заглядывать на англоязычные сайты: на них решение попадается чаще, а даже автоматический перевод в браузере позволяет понять, о чем идет речь.
