Microsoft is rolling out a somewhat unexpected new feature for Windows 10 users. The aging operating system received a new weather widget ported straight from Windows 11’s lock screen. It offers a new forecast UI when the system is locked, plus it allows opening MSN Weather from the lock screen to get extra information. The new widget is rolling out gradually to Windows 10 customers, but you can force-enable it if that is something you want right now.
How to enable the new weather widget on Windows 10 lock screen?
- Begin with installing the January 2023 non-security update for Windows 10 version 22H2. That is KB5034203 with build number 19045.2996.
- After installing the update, go to GitHub and download the latest ViVeTool release. Extract its files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. For example, you can place those files in C:\vive, so it is easier for you to execute commands from Command Prompt.
- Press Win + R and type cmd, then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to launch Command Prompt as Administrator. If you know other ways to launch elevated Command Prompt, feel free to use them.
- Open the folder containing the previously downloaded ViVeTool files using the CD command. For example, CD C:\Vive.
- Type vivetool /enable /id:48129505,48158013 and press Enter. Credit for the IDs goes to @thebookisclosed on X.
- Restart your computer.
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and press the plus button under «Choose one app to show detailed status on the lock screen.» Select Weather.
- Press Win + L to lock your computer and check the result. Note that Windows might take some time before showing you the new weather widget. If it is not there right away, give the operating system an hour or so to work its software.
The new weather widget is already getting all sorts of feedback from Windows 10 users. Some like the new variant, while others think the original widget from the Windows 8 era looks and feels much better than the new one.
Although Microsoft does not provide a user-friendly method to switch back to the old widget, you can do so by completing the same steps as described above, with the exception of step 5, where you should replace /enable with /disable. That is assuming your system has already received the new variant.

To show the Weather on your Windows 10 Lock Screen, follow these simple steps:-
Step 1. Install a Weather App
To display weather information on your lock screen, you need to have a weather app installed on your Windows 10 computer. Microsoft provides a built-in weather app called “MSN Weather” that works seamlessly with the lock screen. If you don’t have it already, you can download it from the Microsoft Store by following these steps:-
(a) Click on the “Start” button in the taskbar.
(b) Search for “Microsoft Store” and open it.
(c) Once the Store is open, click on the search bar in the top-middle.
(d) Type “MSN Weather” and press “Enter.”
(e) Select the “MSN Weather” app from the search results.
(f) Click on the “Get” or “Install” button to download and install the app.
Step 2. Configure Lock Screen Settings
Now that you have the weather app installed, you need to configure your lock screen settings to display weather information. To customize your lock screen, follow these steps:-
(a) Press the “Windows key + I” on your keyboard to open the Settings app.
(b) Click on the “Personalization” option.
(c) In the left sidebar, select “Lock screen.”
(d) On the right side, scroll down to find the “Choose an app to show detailed status on the lock screen” section.
(e) Click on the button under the “Choose an app to show detailed status on the lock screen” section to display a drop-down menu, and choose “Weather” as your preferred app.
Step 3: Customize Weather Display (Optional)
If you want to customize the Weather display further, you can personalize how the weather information is displayed on your lock screen. Follow these additional steps:-
(a) Click on the Start button and search for the Weather app.
(b) Click on the Weather app in the search results to open it.
(c) In the left sidebar, click on Settings (gear icon) to open Weather settings.
(d) Here, you can choose to show the temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius, and even change the default location or set it to detect your location automatically.
Once you complete the above steps, Windows 10 will display Weather information on your Lock Screen in the bottom left corner.

Starting in KB5034203, Windows 10 version 22H2 includes a new weather forecast widget to the lock screen. The patch is an optional «preview» update, meaning that you have to install it manually, or wait a little before it becomes available as a mandatory Patch Tuesday release. It raises the OS version to Build 19045.3996. While the new weather option is rolling out gradually with this release, you can get it enabled right now.
Similar to Windows 11, its predecessor has got the same Weather widget on the lock screen. So in the upcoming weeks, more users will get enhanced weather experience for the lock screen.
The previous weather information on the lock screen was not interactive. It is just a line below the date telling you your location and weather conditions.
The new widget offers much more. This will include dynamic and interactive weather updates, providing you with more information at a glance. By simply hovering over the weather on your lock screen, you will be able to access additional details. Additionally, by tapping or clicking on the weather card and signing in, you will be directed to Microsoft Edge with the full forecast displayed in MSN weather.
But, as said above, the feature roll-out is limited and gradual. So installing KB5034203 or having Build 19045.3996 doesn’t guarantee you the new weather option in the OS. You can find what build you have installed by pressing Win + R, entering winver in the Run dialog, and pressing Enter.
But here is a bit of great news. With help of ViVeTool, a free and open source app, you can activate the updated new lock screen widget.
Let’s review the steps in detail.
To enable the new weather widget on the Windows 10 lock screen, do the following.
- Open the Settings app (Win + I), and go to Update & security > Windows update.
- On the right, find the KB5034203 optional update, and click on Download and Install. If you already have installed Build 19045.3996 or greater, you can omit this step.
- Open Settings once again and go to Personalization > Lock screen.
- Select Weather under the Choose one app to show detailed status on the lock screen.
- Now, download the ViVeTool from this GitHub page.
- Extract it to the c:\vivetool folder.
- Right-click Start, select Run and type cmd, then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open a new command prompt as Administrator.
- In Terminal, type
c:\vivetool\vivetool /enable /id:48129505,48158013 /store:bothand hit Enter.
- Click the power button in the Start menu and select Restart.
- Finally, click your user icon in the Start menu, and select Lock from the menu, or press Win + L. On the Lock screen that appears you will now have a new weather widget below the clock.
That’s it! Notice that Windows 10’s version of the forecast comes with a unique design and layout. It doesn’t replicate the one seen in Windows 11.

В настоящее время я использую настольный компьютер с Windows 10 Pro (21H1, сборка 19043.1288) и не могу заставить приложение «Погода» отображать подробную информацию о состоянии на экране блокировки. В настройках приложения «Погода» я установил местоположение по умолчанию на свое текущее местоположение. Приложение «Погода» без проблем отображает правильную информацию о погоде, когда я запускаю его после входа в систему.
Может кто-нибудь пролить некоторый свет на это? Есть ли другие настройки, которые я могу проверить? Мне также кажется подозрительным, что большинство приложений в списке экрана блокировки имеют серые значки, как будто они отключены. Может ли это быть намеком на какую-то проблему?
