Hello friends
I have some difficulty understanding the meaning of this ‘Phrasal Verb’.
In my book, it is defined as (one of the meanings) :turn a handle to make something come down.
Example 1 : Could you wind down the window so that I can hear you better?
Example 2 : Could you wind down the window and let some air into the car?
They sound confusing to me. Does it mean ‘closing a window’ or ‘opening a window’?

Older cars had handles that you had to turn to open the window. When you wind down the window, you open it — it goes down and opens.
Of course, most recent models of cars have buttons and their windows are power-driven…

It means to open the window.
More precisely, it means to lower the window, so that there is an opening above it. At least in older cars, you do this by turning (winding) the handle. That is why we call it «winding down» the window.

I would say «roll down» the window, not «wind down» the window. Honestly, I can’t remember ever hearing «wind down the window».

This one interested me, because it refers to lowering the window by pressing a button:

re example one . … perhaps are confused because the act of opening a window is unlikely to make it easier to hear someone in a car. Where did you find example one? It seems like an error to me, and winding UP the window would make it quieter in a car.
By the way, if you are speaking there is a subtle difference you might like to know:
The WIND UP (or down) as a verb — is the act of turning and is pronounced with a long vowel sound
The WINDOW (noun) is the glass and pronounced with a short vowel sound.

It will make it easier to hear if you’re outside the car and the driver is trying to give you last-minute turkey-stuffing instructions just before backing out of the driveway: Could you wind down the window so that I can hear you better? I thought you said something about stuffing the turkey — but it isn’t hollow.

The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) has 48 citations for «roll down the window». It has 2 for «wind down the window». It has 132 citations for «rolled down the window». It has 1 for «wound down the window».
I’m not sure if it’s definitive but there does seem to be a definite preference, at least in its database.

I’m beginning to get confused because I’ve heard both wind down and roll down the window. I have no idea whether one would be AE and the other one — BE.
As regards Cagey’s example where a button is pressed to wind down the window, I suppose it is technically correct because the actual mechanical process inside the car door is basically the same…

«Roll down» sounds AE to me. In fact I never heard it before I read this thread.
In BrE, in a car with the old-fashioned hand-cranked windows, we would «wind the window up» or «wind the window down»

It depends which way the window opens! In cars, windows generally open in a downwards direction. If you had a windable window in a house or greenhouse and it opened upwards then you would «wind the window up» to open it.

I guess you mean someone outside a car or in front of a window which is another person stands or sits at the other side of it, so they need to open or wind down the window to hear each other well.

Yes, this is exactly the thing what I tried to mean. This example is written in my book. ‘Phrasal Verb Organizer with Mini-Dictionary’. John Flower. I also thought the same if it is faulty.

This movement is different from the movement of a car window but the verb still applies in my opinion.
Not that it matters much, but I would use «crank open the window» for something like this. I would call the handle and gear combination on this type of window a crank. Crank could also be used for a car window, although I don’t hear it much. «Crank down the window» or «crank up the window» are both possible, in my experience.
