I’ve just received my new Dahua SD29204S-GN as a followup to the Dahua H2.65 IPC-HDW4431C-A that I received a week and a half ago. I checked the 4431 last week just to make sure it arrived undamaged, and it did. Then I reformatted my home computer and reloaded Windows 7 after a major hardware upgrade. I check the SD29204S-GN and in Firefox, I can get into the camera and click on the video interface to download the webplugin.exe file. I do so, install it, refresh, reload, reboot, and I’m still just stuck at the «click here to download plugin». I confirm this activity for both new cameras post-reformat. I even try getting different webplugin versions… 3.0.0.1 and 3.0.0.2 and 3.0.0.3 from the Dahua cameras I have there. All do the same thing. This is dumbfounding me, because this is a clean install of Windows, so doesn’t have any bloated crap on top of it yet.

I confirm that the MMX plugin (MediaPlguin-v-3.3.37.274972) that requires activation after the loading of webplugin.exe does not even come up as an option on my freshly formatted computer under Firefox. Meanwhile, both cameras work correctly under Internet Exploder with the plugin. So.. any ideas on what’s the disconnect here? Somewhere along the way, Firefox is not updating the frame which would normally give me the option to activate the MMX plugin and then display video in that frame. The same behavior occurs under Chrome btw.. Only IE works.. I definitely don’t want o use IE.

The only thing different I can see is that on my work computers, the webplugin.exe installed to C:\Program Files\webrec\Torch\3.0.0.3 several different files. Additionally, there is also a folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\webplugin.exe with webplugin.exe3.0.0.2.exe and webplugin.exe3.0.0.2.dat from the older version. I don’t have this folder loaded on my home box. I’m thinking that it might have spawned from the MMX plugin after activation. Either way, that’s the only difference I can see.

hmm, looks like it’s not NPAPI, at least not in this case… I’ve got some machines working fine with Firefox.. It looks like Firefox is blocking the MMX plugin from being loaded. I’ve actually got two versions of it on a different machine that works fine, but getting it installed on my freshly formatted box is proving problematic. I’m going to have to keep investigating here and see what is the problem.

ok, got it resolved. Sure enough, newer versions of Firefox are blocking the loading of the MMX plugin from the Dahua camera login page. You should see something like this when you load the login page whreby it will ask you to Allow or Block the MMX plugin.
You will need to Allow & Remember to save the setting. The little icon that looks like a lego block in gray top left with the red circling around it is the plugin icon. If you don’t see that icon, it’s because newer versions of Firefox, at least with 46.0.1 will prevent the plugin load question from even being asked. It will just block it automatically. Once the plugin is loaded correctly, you should see it in your list of Addons as such:

I fixed it by uninstalling Firefox, cleaning all remaining entries with ccleaner, rebooting, reinstalling Firefox 39.0, going to all my cameras and loading the plugins like normal, then allowing Firefox to autoupdate to 46.0.1 and it still works. No doubt this behavior will continue under future versions.

nayr SmartPSS doesn’t seem to be able to control the varifocal zoom and focus can you confirm this? I can control through the cameras web page though.

Varifocals are designed to be set it and forget it, they are not PTZ’s.. adjusting zoom/focus on a regular basis is going to yield poor results.

I agree completely, though its nice to be able to set it up through one software. but its all good, at least in my case one camera not in the other I cant change the Varifocal settings did you see my post

I also hate it. I don´t understand, why i need to install for every cam different webplugins and it´s not well done being not downwards compatible. It´s really anoying for setting up i still use the webbrowser.

Nayr thanks, yeah, you’ve got a point but SmartPSS is «alot of software» and I’m still deciding what to use, currently I’ve done more testing on my Synology SS, and it’s a bit annoying ant time consuming to get to know all the new

Two more things that popped to my mind right now; one I’ve noticed, that PSS compared to SS in completely same scenario (same number of cams, settings, etc. pretty much same, still scenes), is utilizing 25-35% more CPU power…do you have maybe any experience with that, and two: regarding that, did you ever played with «HW» decoding of the streams, meaning, can you do it with let’s say Synology SS or SmartPS, and, what are prerequisites (what kind of graphic card, drivers etc…)?

I mean, I’m getting 35-50% avg cpu utilization on my i7-4790 with 8 FHD streams (AVC,30fps, 8m MBR…)

I have never touched a Synology SS; cant help you there.. perhaps its feeding you the sub-stream and not the main stream..

35-50% of a single core or overall system usage? That seems quite reasonable for 8 1080p streams if your viewing the main streams.. but there is no point in using the main streams in a grid display, even with a 4k monitor all would be scaled down to 720p tops..

Yes i found out that if you add cameras to SmartPSS you can control functions, but as nayr said if add your NVR you get all cameras and mobile access without opening ports for each camera.
Thanks for the picture though made me go look at why mine would not function ( no cameras installed just the NVR )

I have installed ds216j for some customers. I can’t find a plus for the integrated solution from synology.
Use it as a nas for the cam’s, that’s a reliable solution. Main thing is the IVS and apps from Dahua are working fine. I don’t want to miss them. If you don’t want to use the NAS for other purposes, you can better buy a Dahua NVR.

What can be done with Dahua cameras from a plain Chrome or Firefox browser? Is it possible to access & control Dahua cameras in at least a limited manner without the webplugin.exe or a native application (like SmartPSS appears to be)? I obviously don’t yet have any Dahua cameras or I wouldn’t be asking so thanks in advance for putting up with my Dahua noob-ness.

Using vanilla Chrome won’t work, you need to install a plugin. In just a few more days (March 7th) Mozilla is planning on releasing FireFox 52 which will depreciate all NPAPI plugins. A temporary solution is to switch to their ESR (Extended Support Release) but that will eventually stop working in ESR 59.

Failing that there is good ol’ IE (Internet Explorer, not Edge), which is what I use to access all of my cameras.

you can do everything config wise with any browser w/out the plugins for cameras; NVR’s want the plugin/Chrome app but you can plug a monitor into em if your that desperate.

I like the answer from @nayr , so why does @cryptelli say vanilla Chrome won’t work? Is it just the live streaming that won’t work without the plugin, so I’m good as long as I separately use an NVR or something like VLC to view the stream? Thanks again.

If you intend to access your Dahua device via the web browser, it’s necessary to install the plugin and enable ActiveX controls. This plugin allows the browser to fully access the Dahua IP camera, DVR, or NVR.

These instructions are valid for Internet Explorer only, the other browsers such as Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari don’t support the ActiveX controls which means you can’t access your system.

If you type the IP address of the device on the browser, the login screen will show but it will say “failed” or “error” once you enter your credentials.

For users of Windows 10, it’s important to make sure that you’re using Internet Explorer (and not Microsoft Edge).

Although both these browsers are made by Microsoft, they’re different. The plugin works on Internet Explorer only, and doesn’t get installed on Microsoft Edge (they block the controls).

Internet Explorer is the blue E with the gold ring around it. If you can’t find it, simply type “Internet Explorer” on the Window’s search bar.

Configure Dahua plugin and ActiveX for Internet Explorer

As we mentioned earlier, make sure to run Internet Explorer (and not Microsoft Edge).

Step 1. Once you run Internet Explorer, click the Settings button and then select Internet Options. This is the gear icon in the top right corner.
Step 2. On the Internet Options window, select the Security tab. Click on the green check that says “Trusted sites”, then click on Sites.

Now you should add the full IP address of the recorder (DVR, NVR) or IP camera including the http:// before the hostname DDNS or IP address.

Additionally, make sure the small tick box labeled “Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zone” is NOT checked. Close the pop-up window and select Custom Level on the previous page.

Step 3. In the security, settings window scroll down until you see ActiveX controls and plug-ins. Disable ActiveX filtering, set Download signed ActiveX controls to prompt, and set Download unsigned ActiveX controls to prompt (same as shown on the image below).

Click OK to close the pop-up. Make sure to click Apply and OK on the Internet options pop-up.

Step 4. In this step, type the full IP address for your IP camera or recorder (for example http://192.168.1.108 or http://hostname.dyns.com) in the address (URL) bar at the top of the browser.

When prompted, install the plug-ins in order that they appear. Once installed, refresh the page and log in using your username and password. If the plugin doesn’t work, check the next section.

Fix: Dahua Plugin Failed to Install

Sometimes the plugin is installed but you still get prompted to install the plugin. Or it looks like it went through, but when you log in it says “no plugin installed”. If that’s the case, it means the plugin wasn’t installed properly.

Most of the time this issue is caused by having multiple plugins installed on the computer. Each Dahua camera, NVR, and DVR requires a specific plugin and when you have all of them installed, you may stumble upon a so-called “plugin conflict”.

To fix this issue you need to delete the plugins manually. This will allow for a fresh and proper install. To avoid any permission issues when deleting the plugins, ensure the Internet Explorer is completely closed.

We need to find the plugin folder and have it deleted. Usually, web plugins are located in the (C:) drive under program files and program files(x86) on 64-bit systems.

Open My Computer or “This PC” and double click on the (C:) drive. First, navigate to C:\Program Files and look for webrec or Webplugin.exe.

If either folder is located here, delete it. Look for the same two folders in C:\Program Files (x86) and delete either of them if located there.

Once the plugin folders are deleted, go again through steps 1 to 3, then reinstall the plugins or install them the first time. Try to log in again and check if you can see the live pictures or even playback.
