Visual studio 2022 runtimes windows

Microsoft has been working on Visual Studio 2022 version 17.0 for quite some time now. Currently, their latest Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is running on Visual Studio 2022 version 17.0 Preview 4.1. It also includes Visual C++ Redistributables 2022. You can download it using the direct download links given down below.

Since it is a Preview release, Microsoft suggests that you do not run it in the production environment, but rather use it for testing purposes only. However, we will only be discussing on how you can install Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 only, while not having to deal with the entire Visual Studio 2022.

Update: Microsoft has released the Visual Studio 2022 stable version. We are updating this post with Visual C++ redistributable 2022 direct download links.

This release is not “go-live” and not intended for use on production computers or for creating production code.

Microsoft

Visual Studio 2022 brings in some significant improvements and changes as compared to its older versions. For one, they have now shifted to a 64-Bit architecture from the previous 32-Bit architecture, allowing it to work more efficiently while being lightweight.

The process involves installing a Visual Studio 2022 version 170.0 Preview 4.1 component alongside C++ Redistributable. However, you can then delete the component afterward while maintaining the Visual C++ 2022 on your computer. Here is how to do so:

Install Visual Studio 2022

  1. Download the Visual Studio Community installer and then run the .exe file by double-clicking it.
  2. You will be prompted with a notification. Click Continue.

  3. The wizard will then download a small file and move onto the next screen automatically. Now switch to the Individual Components tab from the top of the wizard.
  4. Search for “redistributable” from the search box at the top. Next, check the box next to C++ 2022 Redistributable Update, and click Install.

  5. The installation process of Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 will now begin. However, the “MSBuild tools” component will also be installed by default alongside it.

Although the additional component is only 103 MBs in size, you can still delete it by performing the following steps:

  1. Run the downloaded .exe file which was used earlier to install VS 2022. You will be prompted with a notification. Click Continue.

  2. The Visual Studio Installer will now launch and you will see Visual Studio Build Tools 2022 already installed. Click More and then click Uninstall.

  3. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

You will now have both Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 x86 and x64 installed on your computer with no Visual Studio 2022, or any of its components. You can confirm this through Programs and Features:

What’s new in Visual Studio 2022 version 17 Preview 4.1

Microsoft is now headed towards a new direction with Visual Studio. VS 2022 is now based on 64-bit architecture, which means it will not be bound to only 4GBs of RAM – but more! Therefore increasing its performance. Users will now be able to execute, debug, and edit their code simultaneously without having to wait for one task to finish.

There are other improvements in Visual Studio 2022 as well which can be discussed further:

Changes to User Interface

Microsoft is now aiming for everyone to be able to use Visual Studio. The User Interface (UI) has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly with a modernized touch. They have also made the following changes:

  • Icons have been updated for more clarity and a better contrast.
  • A new font has been introduced named “Cascadia Code” which is a fixed-width font for better readability and ligature support.
  • Improved product themes.
  • Accessibility Insights has been integrated to detect accessibility issues before end-users come across them.

A more personalized environment

More options have been added so that each developer can customize their environment to whatever they are more comfortable with. Microsoft believes that true productivity cannot come if you are uneasy with your surroundings.

Now everyone can customize their Visual Studio IDE to their liking till everything is just right.

Easier integration with Azure

VS 2022 will make it easier for developers to build cloud-based applications with predefined repositories The repositories will be made up of opinionated code showing the patterns in action, infrastructure-as-code assets to provision the Azure resources, and pre-built GitHub workflows setting up a developer with a complete CI/CD solution when the first project is created.

.NET 6 support

Visual Studio 2022 will have complete support for .NET 6 is a unified framework for web, client, and mobile apps. This includes the .NET Multi-platform App UI for cross-platform client apps on Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS.

C++20

Visual Studio 2022 will also include support for the C++ workload with the new productivity feature C++20 tooling, and IntelliSense.

Verdict

Visual Studio comes in 3 different editions: Community, Professional, and Enterprise. Community is the free version that everyone can benefit from. However, Professional and Enterprise versions are licensed and need to be purchased.

Moreover, Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 is backward-compatible (2015-2022). Meaning, anything developed with C++ 2015 can run using C++ 2022. However, vice versa is not true.

Another confusing aspect is which .Net to download. End-users only need to download the Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime. Over the years, it’s been called the redistributable package or end-user runtimes. As of 5.0, it’s now called Runtime and appears in Apps & features as Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime.

Once you have them installed, if there are updates pushed out, then you may be notified about an update by Windows Update.

But not always, so that’s why I use the 3rd party tool — sometimes an update might slip through the cracks, and Windows Update is not 100% accurate 100% of the time. The use of a 3rd party tool helps stay on top of the updates manually.

Thanks for your replies, guys, but I think you’ve both misunderstood my question.
Have another look at my previous post again.

The question is: Does Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime replace all these individual redistributables?
MajorGeeks offers an explanation which I have linked to above.

My latest Handbrake update required Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime (linked above) which it never did before. Maybe it’s a Windows 11 thing. Not sure. That’s why I’m asking.

I think you are misunderstanding the utilities.

These are Microsoft Runtimes. Directly from Microsoft. Simply packaged into a convenient single file installer package.

If there are updates, Microsoft may install updates.

It does not replace what you already have installed — regardless of whether you download each individual one from Microsoft and install it or use this handy single file installer to install them all in one fell swoop.

Nah, I see what I missed.

Think about it this way.

JAVA doesn’t replace C++, neither of which replace BASIC.

This utility is for VisualC++ Runtimes. What you are looking at is .NET runtime. .NET is not C++ anymore than JAVA is.

Different languages == Different runtimes.

Before the VCRuntimes, there were also the VBruntimes (VB1-VB6) which pre-dated the VC runtimes.

As long as programs require the runtimes because that language was used to develop a program, you’ll need to install it. Since so many programs rely on VC Runtimes, I just pre-install them. Good programs will script their installer to check for the presence of the runtime, and only install if it is not detected as being installed on the computer. Bad programs will install it even if it is already present.

As for the .NET — I have the latest 3.1, 5 and 6 preview also instaled on my machine. Again, they are completely separate and indepdent of the VC Runtimes.

Handbrake prompted me to use Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime, which in the past, I never needed. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever used it previously. What confused me more was the MajorGeek article, which said:

Over the years, it’s been called the redistributable package or end-user runtimes. As of 5.0, it’s now called Runtime and appears in Apps & features as Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime.

But I now know we are talking about two different beasts.

Yup — only in 1.4.0 and newer does the actual UI need the newer .NET desktop Runtime, versus the older (and usually included with Windows 10) .Net 4.x runtimes. But they’ve used the native .Net 4.x for a while now.

Распространяемые пакеты Microsoft Visual C++ (Visual C++ Redistributable) содержат необходимые компоненты для запуска игр и программ, разработанных с помощью соответствующих версий Visual Studio и, как правило, нужны при ошибках вида «Запуск программы невозможен» так как система не обнаружила файлы DLL с названиями, начинающимися с msvcr или msvcp. Чаще всего требуются компоненты Visual Studio 2012, 2013, 2015, но есть возможность загрузки и установки распространяемых пакетов Visual C++ версий 2005-2022.

Далее в инструкции описаны способы скачать распространяемые компоненты Visual C++ для Windows 11, Windows 10 и предыдущих версий, x64 и x86 (32-бит) официальным способом с сайта Майкрософт и путем установки из стороннего источника, о проблемах, с которыми можно столкнуться при установке и дополнительная информация, которая может оказаться полезной.

Первый из способов скачать компоненты Visual C++ — официальный и, соответственно, самый безопасный. Для загрузки доступны следующие компоненты (при этом некоторые из них можно загрузить разными способами).

  • Visual Studio 2015-2022 — при установке этого набора устанавливаются все необходимые распространяемые компоненты Visual C++ 2015, 2017, 2019 и 2022 в рамках одного файла установщика.
  • Visual Studio 2013 (Visual C++ 12.0)
  • Visual Studio 2012 (Visual C++ 11.0)
  • Visual Studio 2010 SP1
  • Visual Studio 2008 SP1

Важное примечание: если вы загружаете библиотеки для исправления ошибок при запуске игр и программ (система не обнаружила определённую DLL из пакета), а ваша система — 64-разрядная, следует скачать и установить как x86 компоненты (для 32-бит), так и x64 версии, так как многим программам для запуска нужны библиотеки 32-бит (x86) даже в x64 версиях Windows.

Порядок загрузки компонентов будет следующим:

  1. Зайдите на официальную страницу и выберите нужный компонент для загрузки.
  2. Для Visual C++ 2015-2022 достаточно напрямую скачать и установить файлы vc_redist.x86.exe и vc_redist.x64.exe для x64 систем, только x86-вариант для 32-бит систем или vc_redist.arm64.exe для устройств с ARM-процессорами.

  3. Для компонентов Visual C++ 2013 аналогичным образом скачайте файлы установщиков из раздела «распространяемые пакеты Microsoft Visual C++ для Visual Studio 2013».
  4. Для некоторых компонентов (например, для версии Visual C++ 2012) вы увидите предложение войти с вашей учетной записью Майкрософт. Но делать это не обязательно — ниже в этой статье я дам ссылки на прямую загрузку с сайта Майкрософт без необходимости входа.

Также на сайте Майкрософт доступны отдельные страницы для загрузки распространяемых пакетов Microsoft Visual C++ список таких страниц далее:

  • Visual C++ 2013 (во второй части страницы есть прямые ссылки для скачивания x86 и x64 версий)
  • Visual C++ 2010
  • Visual C++ 2008
  • Visual C++ 2017 (x64)
  • Visual С++ 2015  — первая и вторая страницы загрузки на официальном сайте

После скачивания нужных компонентов Visual C++, запускаем загруженные файлы и проходим весь процесс установки.

Возможные проблемы при установке:

  • Если при установке отдельных компонентов вам сообщат, что они уже есть на компьютере, попробуйте установщик другой разрядности (возможно, не хватает именно его).
  • Если вы уверены, что проблемы при запуске программ или игр вызваны каким-то набором компонентов, но он не устанавливается, посмотрите: присутствует ли он в списке в Панель управления — Программы и компоненты. Если да, то попробуйте удалить его там и заново запустить установщик.
  • Если вы отключали какие-либо службы Windows 11, 10 и предыдущих версий системы, связанные с обновлениями или «установщиком Windows», это может приводить к ошибкам при установке библиотек Visual C++.

Winget

В Windows 11 и 10 присутствует встроенный менеджер пакетов Winget, позволяющий выполнять загрузку и установку программ и компонентов из доверенных источников с помощью интерфейса командной строки. Достаточно выполнить следующие шаги:

  1. Запустите командную строку, Windows PowerShell или Терминал Windows от имени администратора: сделать это можно из меню по правому клику на кнопке «Пуск».
  2. Введите команду 
    winget search vcredist

    и нажмите Enter. В результате вы увидите список доступных для установки компонентов Visual C++ Redistributable.

  3. Выберите необходимый для установки компонент, скопируйте его ИД из соответствующей колонки, введите команду 
    winget install скопированный_ИД

    и нажмите Enter.

  4. В результате будет автоматически загружен соответствующий файл и автоматически запущена его установка.

При необходимости, используя Winget вы можете автоматизировать установку и сделать так, чтобы набор нужных компонентов устанавливался автоматически без необходимости вводить команды вручную для каждого из них по порядку, подробнее — в этой инструкции.

Неофициальный способ скачать библиотеки DLL — Visual C++ Runtime Installer (All-In-One)

Есть и неофициальные установщики необходимых для запуска программ DLL файлов Visual Studio. Один из таких установщиков, судя по всему, безопасный — Visual C++ Runtime Installer (All-In-One), устанавливающий сразу все необходимые компоненты (x86 и x64) из одного оффлайн-установщика.

Процесс установки выглядит следующим образом:

  1. Запуск установщика и нажатие Y в окне установщика.

  2. Дальнейший процесс установки будет автоматическим, при этом, перед установкой компонентов, существующие наборы распространяемых пакетов Visual Studio будут удалены с компьютера. Устанавливаются распространяемые пакеты Visual C++ 2005-2022 годов, а также дополнительные библиотеки.

В завершение — некоторые дополнительные нюансы, которые начинающие пользователи часто упускают при установке распространяемых компонентов Visual C++ на компьютере:

  • Библиотеки Visual C++ не являются взаимозаменяемыми: например, если для работы игры или программы требуется версия Visual C++ 2013, нужно её установить, несмотря на то, что на компьютере уже установлена версия 2015-2022.
  • Как было отмечено в первом разделе материала, для x64-систем почти всегда требуется установка не только x64-версии библиотек, но и x86 (32-бит), поскольку многими программами используются именно 32-разрядные DLL даже в 64-бит Windows.
  • В случае, если перед тем как прийти к загрузке и установке компонентов вы вручную скачивали отдельные файлы DLL со сторонних сайтов и копировали их в системные папки, рекомендую их удалить (только те, что вы самостоятельно туда поместили) перед запуском установки компонентов.
