download loopMIDI
Virtual loopback MIDI cable for Windows 7 up to Windows 10, 32 and 64 bit.
This software can be used to create virtual loopback MIDI-ports to interconnect applications on Windows that want to open hardware-MIDI-ports for communication.
The ports created are unique for each user and only exist while the loopMIDI-application is running. So if you log-off, the created ports cease to exist.
When you close the configuration, the application will not terminate, but rather be minimized to the traybar. When you right-click on the traybar-icon of loopMIDI, you get an options-menu to either deactivate the application, configure the ports or to activate autostart each time you log on to the computer.
This software uses the virtualMIDI driver to actually create the ports.
A few months ago we released our very own Virtual MIDI Cable Driver for Microsoft Windows.
Some users quickly reported that it was not recognized on the latest versions of Windows 10 (build 1607), because Microsoft now requires a different certification level than the one we had. We’re now proud to announce that we did what was required from Microsoft to solve the problem, and that is now working very well on those systems too 🙂
So if you had downloaded the previous version and encountered this kind of error:
Be sure to checkout the latest release. Uninstall the previous version, and install this one instead.
But what does Springbeats Virtual MIDI Cable do exactly?
Glad you asked. It’s a Windows driver which installs 8 new MIDI devices on your system. Each of this device can be used to carry MIDI data from one application to the other. Just like a cable would do if you were dealing with hardware instead of software.
A typical example would be to route MIDI notes from your MIDI controller, that were first transformed by an application, to your DAW. You’d then be able to record the transformed notes. This is how AutoTheory works for instance. It takes the notes from your USB MIDI keyboard, changes them, and lets you get these changes in another app, via our Virtual MIDI Cable.
The good thing is : it’s totally free for personal uses! More than that, it is also opensource. The only restriction being you can’t embed it with your own app if you’re a developer, without our agreement.

Looks like MIDI-Ox is not compatible with W10. So looking for best options I have empirical evidence this is true… (Bender told me!) #1 |

Re: Looking for the best Virtual Midi Cable for Windows 10 64bit
I had better luck with Tobias Erichsen’s software, but I would suggest trying both because you’re dealing with drivers and system configurations vary. What works well on my system may not work on yours, and vice versa. LoopBe1 is free: http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html I haven’t tried them since UWP MIDI was added to Sonar, so you might want to try that option with them, too. https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=NewFeatures.14.html #2 |

Re: Looking for the best Virtual Midi Cable for Windows 10 64bit
Loopbe30 and loopbe1 both work flawlessly with win 10. The choice just depends on how many virtual cables you need. Bruce. I have no problem with loopMIDI. MIDI-Ox is working fine for me as well, but I use it for diagnostic only. Sonar 8LE -> Platinum infinity, REAPER, Windows 10 pro #4 |

Re: Looking for the best Virtual Midi Cable for Windows 10 64bit
I run both loopbe30 and MidiOx in combination under Win10 with no problems. I use most of Midiox features such as Translation Maps to convert controllers, NoteOn parameters, etc and Patch Maps to select those Translation Maps (depending on what Prog Change I send it from a midi keyboard). Then the virtual midi output of that is received by Sonar tracks. #5 |

Thanks for the input everyone I have empirical evidence this is true… (Bender told me!) #6 |
In some cases virtual MIDI ports are required to send and receive MIDI data between a plug-in and a host application or between plug-ins.

Virtual MIDI on Mac
The OSX operating system provides virtual MIDI ports natively and can be enabled by following the steps below.
- Launch the «Audio MIDI Setup» application which you can find in the Applications > Utilities directory.
-
Open the MIDI Studio Window.
-
Double click the IAC Driver icon and enable the driver by checking the option «Device is online».
- Now you can add, remove and rename Ports to your preferences.
-
Restart your host application. You should now be able to select your virtual MIDI ports within your host and within the MP3244 or SQ4.
Virtual MIDI on Windows
The Windows operating system dose not provide virtual MIDI ports natively. There are several tools which can establish virtual MIDI ports.
To name two often mentioned tools:
- loopMIDI developed by Tobias Erichsen
- MIDI Yoke which is part of the MIDI OX Utility
loopMIDI is our favorit, since it is well maintained and very easy to setup. Find below a quick setup guide:
- Download and install loopMIDI: Download
-
Start loopMIDI and setup your virtual ports. You need one port for each connection.
-
To autostart your virtual MIDI ports you need to goto the traybar, right click the loopMIDI icon and activate autostart.
- Restart your host application. You should now be able to select your virtual MIDI ports within your host and within the MP3244 or SQ4.
