The Xbox One features a comprehensive suite of online features and services, but it doesn’t always work properly. For example, you may be here looking to fix Xbox One “Double NAT detected.”
The issue seems daunting, and it requires some tech knowledge. Like changing the console’s NAT Type, you’ll likely have to mess with your router’s admin page. Luckily, we’re here to help you, as it’s not as difficult as it sounds.
In specific, the double NAT error often occurs out of nowhere while you’re playing online. The official explanation is that you have two networks trying to assign a NAT category to your Xbox. Typically, it’s the result of wrong configurations when using a gateway (modem/router).
Xbox One Double Nat Error
First, you need to understand what “NAT” means. The acronym stands for Network Address Translation. It’s the protocol that translates the IP address of various devices in a local network into a single address.
After, the single address goes to the router. At the same time, the router delivers an internet connection to the devices.
Finally, the NAT Type configuration comes innate with your router and ISP and determines how it can interact how your IP addresses (internet-connected devices) interact with other devices:
[table id=412 /]
A Double Nat Error occurs when multiple routers or gateways are trying to establish a connection between your Xbox One and the internet.
In simple words, your Xbox console is trying to connect to a secondary router instead of your main router. It’s a security measure rather than an error, but it’s not convenient for gamers.
See, the “Double NAT” message prevents your device from building a steady connection for playing online. As a result, your multiplayer becomes limited or inaccessible.
You’ll find a “Double NAT Detected” message on the Xbox’s Network menu, and you can’t access online gaming. Alternatively, a multiplayer playtime ended abruptly before seeing the message.
How to Fix Xbox One “Double NAT Detected” Error
Removing the “Double NAT detected” error requires removing the troublesome router or gateway. Alternatively, you’d need to set up your Xbox’s internet connection again.
The troubleshooting works for the Xbox One and the Xbox Series family regardless of the solution. Remember, both generations share interfaces and services.
However, you should be clear on the type of device you have:
- Router plus a modem: These are two separate devices. The modem receives internet from your ISP via a telephone cable and sends the signal to the router via an Ethernet cable. Then, your devices connect to the router’s Wi-Fi network.
- Gateway: Most people know gateways as modem/routers or cable modem routers. It’s a single device that receives internet from your provider and sends a Wi-Fi signal to your home devices. You’ll also identify a gateway if it has multiple ethernet ports on top of the telephone cable port – modems only have a single ethernet port.
After knowing this, perhaps you realized your error: you’re using both a router and a gateway.
Set Up “Bridge Mode” on Your Gateway
We recommend configuring your main router or gateway in “Bridge Mode.” The solution only works better if you gateway, as most routers don’t have the option.
The Bridge Mode disables the NAT and routing functions, which turns the router into a simpler pass-through modern. In other words, it won’t limit your IP address.
You’d need to navigate to your router’s admin page. You can do this by typing its IP address on your web browser, and you can find the address in one of two ways:
- It’s on the back of the router or modem.
- It’s one of these two common addresses:
- 192.168.1.1
- 192.168.0.1
Once you browse to your router’s IP, you will have to enter the default username and password. These are also at the back of the device. Otherwise, this should work for all router brands:
- Username: admin
- Password: admin
You or somebody else may have already logged into the router’s admin page and then changed the password. If the password is not saved on your PC, you may have to ask the router’s admin for the password.
Otherwise, you can reset the router by pressing its reset button with a pin. It’s usually within a small hole in the rear or the back of the item.
Then, after you reset the router, go back to its admin page and log-in with the default username and password.
Lastly, once you’re within your router’s admin page, navigate to the wireless options, enable Bridge Mode, and save the changes.
The process is different on all router brands, as every model comes with its interface and options. So you will have to find it yourself. Typically, it’s within the Wireless menu, and you may see it as “WDS Bridge.”
If you can’t find the exact steps, we recommend you find a brand-specific tutorial online.
Enable Access Point on Your Router
If your router doesn’t have a Bridge Mode option, there’s another way to avoid the Double NAT. The solution is making your Xbox One an access point.
Again, this option is specific for routers only. Gateways won’t have this option.
- Go back to your router’s admin page
- Go to your router’s Wireless options. As before, it varies between models. You can search for a brand-specific tutorial.
- Enable Access Point (AP) Mode. You may have to click on “Edit Router to AP” first to find the option.
- Save changes
- Restart your router and your Xbox
- Test the connection again
You may find the option within Operation, Operation Mode, Network Mode, Network Operation, Wireless, Wireless Setting, Wireless Configurations, or similar menus.
Remove the Router if You Have a Gateway
If you’re using both a router and a gateway, you must remove one from the network.
We recommend you stick with the gateway and abandon the router for now. So unplug the router, and store it in a box.
First, though, put the gateway on Bridge Mode, as I explained above. As I said, it will remove its NAT restrictions on your network.
Afterward, you’d have to re-check your Xbox’s network settings:
- Reset your Xbox
- Press the Xbox button to open the Guide
- Go to Profile & system
- Go to Settings
- Go to General
- Select Network Settings
- Make sure “Double NAT detected” doesn’t appear.
Use an Ethernet Cable
If all else fails, you’d need to remove the “Wi-Fi” entirely from the formula. The solution is plugging your Xbox directly into the gateway or mode.
If you can’t set up your Xbox and monitor in such a way, there’re items you can use:
After you connect straight to the modem or gateway, restart both the console and the internet device. Then, check the console’s network settings to see if the “Double NAT” error persists.

Experiencing network problems? The problem could be down to your PC’s Network Address Translation (NAT) throwing an error. NAT errors can spoil your surfing and gameplay experience considerably, but not everyone knows what a NAT is, and how errors can ruin your fun.
If you don’t know what NAT is, we’ll help you understand its meaning and how you can fix «double NAT» errors.
What Is NAT, and What Causes a Double NAT Error?
NAT is a translation method. It translates the public IP address that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides to a private IP address used by your local network.
The middleman in this equation is the router, which performs this translation. However, when you’re using two routers or connecting your router to an ISP gateway, the translation can go wrong and lead to double NAT errors.
Double NAT errors occur when your router is connected to another router or gateway. Since the IP address is translated twice in such setups, your network is essentially split into two different private networks. Both devices will have problems communicating with each other because of two different sets of IP addresses and firewalls.
Double NAT can cause network problems and interfere with online gaming, VPN connections, port forwarding, and port triggering. Double NAT often renders Quality-of-Service (QoS) configurations useless. It can also interfere with smart home devices like cameras and doorbells.
Essentially, double NAT can choke your network and stand in the way of effectively using many devices. Let’s talk about how to fix it.
How to Detect Double NAT on Windows
If you suspect something is wrong with your router configuration, you need to see if double NAT is currently occurring. Fortunately, you can do that from your Windows PC with a few quick steps.
To check if double NAT is the problem:
- Launch an elevated Command Prompt by pressing Win + R, typing cmd, and pressing Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
-
Execute the following command:
tracert 8.8.8.8
- You’ll see a list of hops. If the first two hops are private IP addresses, you have a double NAT issue.
If you’re unsure as to which IP addresses are private or public, private IP addresses are typically in specific ranges, such as:
- 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
- 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
- 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
If you see IP addresses that look very different from these, those are public IP addresses. In our case, for example, only the first hop shows a private IP address while the subsequent hops show public IPs. This indicates that our network doesn’t have a double NAT problem.
How to Fix Double NAT Errors
Here are some ways to fix double NAT errors:
Remove a Router
You guessed it. If your current network setup includes two routers, the easiest solution is to remove one of the two routers from the equation. If you don’t absolutely need those two routers (most regular users don’t), just use a single router provided by the ISP.
Use One Router as a Modem
If you do need to use two routers, you’ll need to use your ISP’s router as a modem. This involves plugging the ISP’s router into the second router’s WAN port.
Use Bridge Mode
Another method to fix double NAT errors is enabling bridge mode. Some routers don’t have this option so you’ll first need to check if yours does by accessing the router’s firmware.
The bridge mode turns a router into a modem that relays all the traffic that comes its way directly to the router.
When you enable bridge mode, it disables NAT and allows all traffic to pass through without translation.
The method for configuring bridge mode differs for every router. You can generally access the router firmware by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into the browser’s URL bar and pressing Enter. Log in using the credentials provided by the ISP or the manufacturer.
If you can’t find the bridge mode settings, it’s best to contact the ISP or manufacturer.
Forward Connections Using DMZ
If bridge mode isn’t available, you can put your router in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). When you set up DMZ, you’ll create an area where all ports are forwarded to. This way, you won’t be disabling NAT, but you’ll create a port forwarding rule that says all traffic, from any port, is forwarded to a specific address.
Effectively, DMZ is a setting that bypasses DHCP, NAT, and firewall to give another router a direct connection to the internet.
Again, your router may or may not have the DMZ option.
Before you set up DMZ, you’ll need your secondary router’s IP address. This should be a static IP address, which means you can’t use DHCP mode. Once you’ve configured the router to use a static IP, go to the router firmware’s homepage or the page showing basic network details and note down the IP address.
To set up DMZ, log into the router’s firmware and locate the DMZ setting. Enable DMZ and enter the other router’s static IP address.
Eliminate Double NAT Errors and Enjoy Your Network Again
Double NAT errors be a major problem, especially for those who love online gaming. Solving the double NAT error can be as simple as removing the second router or involve some technical steps like using a static IP address and enabling DMZ.
Hopefully, you were able to resolve the double NAT issue with one of these errors. While double NAT can prevent you from joining sessions, there are other factors that can cause the game to lag even though you’re able to join the session. If you don’t want to rewire the whole network, setting the gateway to Bridge mode is best. Also, once enabled it will disable NAT and other routing functions. To learn how to activate Bridge mode, follow the steps below:
1. Open your browser and type the default gateway address. (If you have no clue about it, you can search online for the model you are using.)
2. Log into your router/modem > configuration menu > navigate to Bridge Mode (this action varies from model to model)
3. Enable Bridge Mode > save changes
4. Reboot both gateway & Xbox One
If everything is done as instructed, the double NAT error should be resolved. If not, you can try other methods explained below.
Note: If you face problems while looking for Bridge Mode, you can contact your ISP. They will help you with it.
2. Delete your ISP router
If enabling Bridge Mode did not help, try removing the router’s ISP from the network, or the one with weaker performance. For this, follow the steps below:
- Disconnect from the router’s WAN port, and connect with your router.
- Next, plug-in Xbox One with the newly configured router
Once done the Double Nat error should be resolved.
Note: Sometimes ISP providers do not let you do this easily. This means you might have to repeat step 1 several times.
3. Fixing Double NAT if Bridge Mode is not found
If your gateway doesn’t support Bridge Mode, there’s nothing to worry about. You can still fix the Double NAT error on your router, using the steps explained below:
- Open your browser and enter the address of the router (We are talking about router address, not gateway)
- Login to router
- Head to wireless options (this option differs from device to device.)
- Edit Router to AP (Access Point) / Enable Access Point (AP) mode.
- Save changes and reboot both router and Xbox One
What is Access Point?
Basically, used to enhance the range of wireless network Access Point (AP) acts as a portal for devices to connect to a LAN.
Note: Features like QoS, Parental Controls, and NAT might not be available after performing this operation.
Wrap Up
If you receive Double NAT detected an error while playing games on Xbox One, don’t worry, you can fix it. Using the steps explained above this problem can be easily fixed. Also, remember the main reason for this error message is the use of multiple routers on a network. In addition to this, removing the router removes the less powerful one as this will help overcome the error message.
Hopefully, the above fixes help troubleshoot the Double NAT problem on Xbox One. In case you have tried other fixes and they have helped please share the same in the comments section.
