Unassociate file types for windows 7 windows vista

  • Выполняет переназначение или отмену ассоциаций;
  • Все изменения вступают в силу без перезагрузки ПК;
  • Не требует установки;
  • Не имеет русской локализации;

Unassoc работает только на операционных системах Windows Vista и Windows 7.

The utility discussed in this article helps you unassociate a file type quickly in your Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC.

Windows 7 & Vista do not provide a GUI option to unassociate file types. That’s the reason I wrote this simple tool (Winhelponline.com).

Unassoc is a free program that allows you to disassociate certain formats from certain programs on Windows Vista and Windows 7. You probably know that with the standard tools of these operating systems, you can, for example, make the video in MKV format to open in the right multimedia players, and TXT-documents in your favorite text editor. So, Microsoft has not provided any tools for canceling such format bindings to certain programs. You can only «re-associate» the format with another program. But the cancellation can be done with this small utility.

The Unassoc interface consists of one small window and does not even need to be installed in the system to run it. Just download and run the executable file. So, what do you need to do to undo the association of a certain format with a certain program? To do this, simply enter the required extension (or select it from the list) in the «File types» field and press the «Remove file association» button. The application of the changes is instantaneous.

Unassoc allows users to easily remove file association with certain applications on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The program automatically generates a list of extensions that have an association. After deleting it, you can update the list by pressing the «Refresh list» key. There is also a key that deletes the specified extension from the list — «Delete file type». In general, this is the end of all the significant interface elements that Unassoc has. The developer tried to make the program as simple and understandable as possible.

— Cancellation of any format association with a specific program;

— simple interface consisting of one window with several keys;

— automatic generation of a list with extensions;

— working in a portable mode;

— support only for Windows Vista and 7 (you will not be able to install the program on other operating system versions).

Download Windows Speedup Tool to fix errors and make PC run faster

Windows OS does not provide a GUI to unassociate or dissociate file type extensions. But if you need to remove file associations, you can do so using this portable utility called Unassociate File Types.

Download unassoc.zip from the link mentioned below, and save it to Desktop.

Next, extract the contents to a folder and run the file unassoc.exe

Now select the file type from the list

Click Remove file association (User).

The user-specific association for the chosen file type is now removed from the registry. The system will now use global file association settings.

The Remove file association (User) button Removes the user-specific association (via the Open With dialog) for the chosen file type. Note that this button will remain dimmed if there is no user-specific association for the file type.

The Delete file type button Deletes the file type completely from the registry. Both the user-specific and global associations for the chosen file type is removed.

And the Refresh list button, Refreshes the list box contents.

This utility requires administrative privileges to work correctly.

So if you need to remove file associations you can download the free tool here and use it. It works on Windows 7 and Windows Vista only.

Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 users may want to check out FileTypesMan and Default Programs Editor. They are similar tools that may interest you.

PS: If you find that you cannot open a particular file type, then our File Association Fixer will be able to easily help you fix, repair, and restore the broken file associations. Incidentally,  you may also want to read about how one can set or change file type associations using the Control Panel.
