As I wait for the Linux on Ubuntu on Windows feature to arrive in this month Windows 10 update, I decided to add the Ubuntu fonts to Windows 10 in anticipation. Turns out to be really simple:
- Download the font zip from http://font.ubuntu.com/
- Unzip into a folder
- Select all the
.ttf
and right-click and selectinstall
.
This installs all the true type fonts to the %SystemRoot%\Fonts
location and registers the fonts so that they are availble to all Widows applications (including conhost).
Now I can change the font in any windows app to an Ubuntu font. For example here is Notepad being set to use Ubuntu fonts.
and here is what it looks like:
That’s nice.
Once you’ve downloaded the font package from the website, you need to extract it into your downloads folder. To do this, open the archive and click on “Extract All” to use the default Windows 10 program to extract ZIP files. Next, double-click the newly created folder in your Downloads to open the font files. You can select multiple font files to install. Once they are installed, you’re ready to use them in your computer’s font manager.
To add a font from a different operating system, you can copy it from your Windows PC to the Linux machine. You should then move the font archive to the /usr/share/fonts/WindowsFonts directory. Finally, you can install the fonts by running the font manager application. You can also run sudo fc-cache -fv to reset the font cache.

Can I Use Ubuntu Font?
If you are using Ubuntu, you might want to know if you can use its font on Windows 10. This open source Linux distribution, sponsored by Canonical Ltd., was designed for personal computers. It can also be used on servers. Because it uses a different file extension, you may encounter problems. Font hinting is an older technology that makes fonts look different than they are. This is a common problem in modern fonts, so you need to make sure you understand the differences between the two fonts.
The Ubuntu Font Family is a sans-serif typeface. It uses OpenType features, but is manually hinted. You may not be able to use the font on Windows if you use a non-free copy of it. However, you can use Ubuntu Font in Windows if you have an open source license. Just make sure you check your license to see what it says. If you do, you can use Ubuntu Font on Windows 10!
Can You Add Fonts to Windows 10?
Can You Add Ubuntu Fonts to Windows 10 using your computer’s settings? Yes, but there are a few caveats. First of all, you must install the fonts as TrueType files. You can do this by right-clicking on the file, selecting “Extract fonts”, and then dragging the files to the dotted rectangle in Windows Settings. You can also install fonts from the Microsoft Store, though you won’t find many options there. Also, while most of the fonts are free, some packs cost $5 or more. You may even have to do a system reset after you’ve installed the new fonts.
You can download these fonts from the Microsoft Store. You can find them in the Personalization or Start menu, then select “Download and install.” Alternatively, you can download the fonts from another source, such as the Internet, and install them there. If you have to use them across devices, you must install them using the Windows fonts folder. Depending on the font that you have downloaded, you may have to re-install some of them, so you may want to do this step once or twice.
If you’d like to manually install Ubuntu fonts on Windows 10, the first step is to identify the files that contain the fonts. Once you’ve identified the files, you can remove the fonts from your system by using the rm command, which permanently deletes installed font binaries. Backup your files before proceeding! You can also modify your grep search term to identify fonts from other families.
If you’re using Windows 10, the traditional method of installing fonts is through the Control Panel. To do this, locate the font files in the File Explorer and drag them to the Control Panel. Keep the File Explorer window open while installing the font. Once the font is installed, you’ll see a progress window. When the font has finished installing, you can close the Control Panel and return to your text editor.
You’ll need to extract the font package before you can install it. To extract a ZIP file, press Ctrl+H to show hidden files. After a few seconds, you’ll see an icon for the font in your Downloads folder. Double-click this icon to open a menu. The Font Manager application will open. From here, you can manage your fonts, install and remove them.
