Why Failed to load window layout error window showing in Unity 3D

In Unity 3D “Failed to load window layout” error is showing when there are any errors in your Editor script. “This happens if layout contains custom windows and there are compile errors in the project”. This is what mentioned in the error window.

Sometimes, the same error window is displayed even if you create and opening a new unity project. When you have a custom editor window in your project and it doesn’t compile successfully; Unity 3D is not able to load your window and the project.

How to fix Failed to load window layout error in Unity 3D

To fix the “Failed to load window layout” error in Unity 3D you can use the options provided in the error window. There will be three options to proceed further.

The first one is “Load Default Layout” – when you’re using this option, the Unity project window is set to the default layout. And it will remove your custom window and use Unity’s default layout types.

The second one is “Revert Factory Settings” – this will remove all the custom layout window preferences in Unity 3D and load the default layout for the editor.

The below window will be shown when you select this second option, click the continue button when it asks for confirmation for resetting the layouts.

The last one is “Quit” – it will quit the process of opening the Unity 3D project and close the project without any changes in it.

The other option is if you have the custom window script in your project open the script in Visual Studio and fix any error in the script. If your project doesn’t have any custom window and you’re facing this error, please try the above options to fix them.

Alternative way to fix the error in Unity 3D

If you tried all the above and the same error window is showing or getting the error even for a new project then try the following option to fix. It will replace the project layout support file with the default layout file.

1. Open Users/<currentUser>/AppData/Roaming/Unity/Editor-5.x/Preferences/Layouts/default
2. Open Default.wlt fine using any text editor
3. Copy the content from the Default.wlt file
4. Go to your project folder and find the folder named Library
5. Now open the CurrentLayout-default.dwlt file in any text editor
6. Paste the copied content and save the file and try to open the project

Please close all the instances of Unity before doing the changes. The above solution will work perfectly without any issue and you’re able to open your project successfully.

To avoid the issue in future projects please check that Unity 3D has the write permission in the installation directory. Maybe sometimes this causes the error.

Import Playmaker from asset store.
save the project.
Close and open unity then get this message:

I am not adding anything else to the project

Any help would be appreciated. I just got playmaker so i would love it to work

Nevermind, solved it.
I forgot I added a custom action. That was the issue.

Clicking «load default layout» does nothing (just rerenders the alert box), clicking «revert factory settings» also does nothing.

I’ve googled this issue and the common solution is to reopen unity and to reimport all assests except this is a brand new project. There is nothing in it to import.

I’ve tried creating a new project and it still gives me this error.

I’m running version 2020.1.5f1 and the target platform is Windows 64-bit

Quit Unity and do the following:

  • Go to «AppDataRoamingUnityEditor-5.xPreferencesLayoutsdefault» or «~/Library/Preferences/Unity/Editor-5.x/Layouts/default» for mac, delete LastLayout.dwlt and copy Default.wlt
  • Paste Default.wlt into the «Library» folder of your project
  • Delete CurrentLayout-default.dwlt and rename Default.wlt to CurrentLayout-default.dwlt

Reopen Unity and load the project. The editor should open normally. You should now be able to create new projects as usual too.

the simple solution if it has yet to be tried would be to uninstall unity and reinstall.
if you have already tried that try updating to a newer version see if unity 2020.3 works to narrow the problem down a bit more. I had the same problem for me I just updated unity to a newer version and everything worked perfectly.

I tried the solutions posted by @carmelo343 and @Abhishek Dubey, but it still didn’t work. My solution was to create the unity project using an older version (I used 2019.3.12f1), which shouldn’t cause that layout error, then change the unity version to 2020.1.5f1 in Unity Hub (see below)

I get this most every time I launch a project in Unity. Then I close and relaunch and all is fine. I am using a personal layout. I am using Unity 2020.1.8f1. These kind of things never happened before 2020 version.

On Windows:

  1. Open your project folder and delete the CurrentLayout-default.dwlt file

  2. Go to «C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingUnityEditor-5.xPreferencesLayouts»

  3. Copy Default.wlt file to your project library folder and rename it to «CurrentLayout-default.dwlt«

Здравствуйте, появляется вот такая ошибка при запуске Unity (Скриншот)
Ошибка стала появляться после того как я билдил игру под андройд и внезапно закрыл Unity (Ооочень долго собиралась, думал завис)

Unity 3d doesnt work, when I try to open my project it says that This can happen if layout contains custom windows and there are compile errors in the project. I tried reinstalling OpenGL and something that I found on the internet but didn’t work. Search through the

Known Issues in 2020.1.0a3

maybe your problem is already listed there.


In general

do not touch

alpha or beta versions unless you want to checkout a new added feature and test it.

For anything else stick to the

stable

releases like

2019.1.14f1

or 2019.2.6f1

On the last letter you can see their state:


  • a

    = Alpha

  • b

    = Beta

  • f

    = Release

Not sure if these are related but here and here also others had this problem already in early version so maybe one of their hot-fixes work for you as well.


Solution 2:

This error may occur in released versions.

To resolve this problem:

  1. Go to this directory:

UnityException: Build path contains project built with «Create Visual Studio Solution» option, which is incompatible with current build settings. Consider building your project into an empty directory.

sounds pretty self-explanatory.

Before you have built the project with that option enabled, now you are trying it without.

Either

  • A. Enable that option again if you want to create a VS solution
  • B. Delete the content created by the former build or
  • C. As the exception suggests simply choose another target folder for the new build.

Question:

When creating a new 3D project in Unity (version 2019.3.3f1), I got an error in the unity console without making any change or doing anything within Unity.

The Error:

IndexOutOfRangeException: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
VSCodeEditor.ProjectGeneration.b__25_0 (System.String asset) (at Library/PackageCache/com.unity.ide.vscode@1.1.4/Editor/ProjectGeneration/ProjectGeneration.cs:175)

And the line of code supposedly wrong is from the file created w/ the Project called projectGeneration.cs.

Solution 1:

Go into your Unity Package Manager and find the visual studio code package. Click ‘see all versions’. Change the versions and try downgrading/updating (Sadly I don’t know which version is compatible). Restart Unity and it should be fixed.


Solution 2:

I had the same problem.

The solution for me was to install .NET Framework 4.7.1 Developer pack from:- https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-framework/net471

This is quite an old version, however this was the version requested by OmniSharp in the output window of VS Code.

Note: This solution works with even the 1.2.0 version of the Visual Studio Code Editor package.


Solution 3:

Downgrade visual studio code version to 1.1.3 to fix this error

Open Unity, then go to:

Window->Package Manager->Visual Studio Code 1.1.3

After that, just restart Unity and it will fix the error.
