If you plan to keep using your Windows 10 PC, we understand. Though the end of support date for Windows 10 won’t occur until October 2025, we recommend keeping your files backed up and easily accessible across devices using OneDrive.

End of life and end of support are terms that refer to the end of technical support and security updates for Windows 10. After 10 years, this older version of Windows will no longer receive free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes. For consumers, end of support means that Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of Windows for the latest critical updates and support that can keep you secure online.

When you are ready to purchase a new Windows 11 PC, we encourage you to leverage trade-in and recycling programs available from many of our Windows ecosystem partners including numerous retailers and PC manufacturers.

If you have an eligible device, you can also take advantage of the Microsoft trade-in program to securely and responsibly recycle your PC—and get some extra cash. This resource can help you learn the trade-in value of your used device. You can also return and recycle your device responsibly with our end-of-life management and recycling initiatives.

As of October 14, 2025, PCs running Windows 10 will still function, but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

• Technical support
• Feature updates
• Security updates or fixes

While your Windows 10 PC will continue to function, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware when Windows 10 reaches end of support. We recommend you transition to a version of Windows that is still supported. If your existing device cannot run Windows 11, a new PC that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and great experience.

No. Your PC will continue to work, but support for Windows 10 is discontinued. After October 14, 2025, your Windows 10 PC will no longer receive security updates and Microsoft will no longer be available to provide Windows 10 technical support.

Check if your PC meets the minimum requirements by opening Settings > Privacy and Security > Windows Update.

If your PC is able to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, you should see an option in Windows Update to upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

If your PC is not able to upgrade to Windows 11 or if you want to replace it, you can move to Windows 11 by purchasing a new PC. Find a PC that is right for you here.

If you need more time before moving to a Copilot+ PC or other new Windows 11 device, a one-year Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for $30 USD will help protect your Windows 10 device. Enrollment for this program will open in 2025.

There are a couple of ways to get Windows 11:

Purchase a new PC with Windows 11: Windows 11 is the most current version of Windows. If you have an older PC, you can upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 by buying a new PC. Hardware and software have improved a lot since Windows 10 was released, and today’s computers are faster, more powerful, and more secure.

Help me choose

Install Windows 11 on your current PC: Check to see if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 by opening Settings > Privacy and Security > Windows Update. If your PC is able to upgrade, you should see an option in Windows Update to upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

The upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro to the equivalent edition of Windows 11 is free (for example, Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro). Check to see if this is an option for you by opening Settings > Privacy and Security > Windows Update. If your PC meets the minimum system requirements and is able to upgrade, you should see an option in Windows Update to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

For S mode users, the upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10 Home edition in S mode and Windows 10 Pro edition in S mode is free. If your PC meets the minimum system specifications, the Windows 10 Home edition in S mode can upgrade to the Windows 11 Home edition in S mode. If your Windows 10 PC is running the Pro edition in S mode, you will need to switch out of S mode to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. Windows 11 Pro edition is not available in S mode. If you need more time before moving to a Copilot+ PC or other new Windows 11 device, a one-year Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for $30 USD will help protect your Windows 10 device. Enrollment for this program will open in 2025.

ESU is a paid program that will entitle enrolled PCs to receive Critical and Important security updates after support for Windows 10 ends. The program will provide Critical and Important security updates but will not provide other types of updates or technical support.

Windows 11 Home is the perfect operating system for personal and household use, while Windows 11 Pro offers all the familiar features of Windows 11 Home, plus additional features such as BitLocker, remote desktop, and domain join to support professionals. Compare versions of Windows 11.

Support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, when Windows 10 reaches end of support. Although these applications will continue to run on Windows 10, we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 to avoid performance and reliability issues with using those apps over time.

On October 14, 2025, support for non-subscription versions of Office will be affected in two ways:

• Support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 will end, across all operating systems.
• Office 2024 and Office 2021 (including Office LTSC versions) will continue to run on Windows 10 but will no longer be supported.

To maintain a supported configuration, we recommend that you upgrade your device to Windows 11 and consider subscribing to Microsoft 365. If you are running Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021, Office 2024, or Office LTSC 2024, you can also migrate that license to a new Windows 11 device. As you consider your options, please note that support for Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 will end one year later, in October 2026.

People find laptops more convenient than desktops because they are lighter in weight and more portable. If you buy a laptop, you can still connect it to a larger monitor, keyboard, and mouse so that your way of using it is similar to how you have used your Windows 10 desktop. Then, you can disconnect and use it as a laptop when you travel or if you want to work in a different setting. If you have CDs or DVDs you want to access, you can still plug in an external DVD drive, usually by plugging into a USB port on the laptop.

Windows 11 PCs are easier to use and have significant improvements in startup times and battery life³. Windows 11 also has a clean improved design with everything you need for your every day needs. With improved search functionality, it’s easier to search and find exactly what you need from both the Web and your PC. Windows 11 is the newest version of Windows. Windows 10 will reach End of Support on Oct 14, 2025. For more details, please visit the End of Support page.

To see if your PC qualifies, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates if there is not already a notification that your PC can upgrade to Windows 11.

The answer depends on your specific needs. Many people find everything they need right on their new PC, but sometimes there is a need to add additional hardware to augment your experience. If you use CD-ROM software, with most modern PCs you’ll need an external CD-ROM. If you’re switching from a laptop to a desktop, you might need to purchase a monitor (and potentially a docking station). If you already own hardware that you want to continue to use, most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 are expected to work with Windows 11. If you want to be sure, please check with your accessory manufacturer.

It’s free. But only Windows 10 PCs that are running Windows 10 20H1 or later and meet the minimum hardware requirements will be able to upgrade. И только спустя почти 10 лет компании удалось пересадить основную массу пользователей на Windows 10, можно сказать, «силком», убирая поддержку в Windows 7 нового «железа», и даже принудительно обновляя ПК пользователей до Windows 10 с помощью скандальной утилиты Get Windows 10 (GWX).

Обновления

Поддержка Windows 7 официально завершена еще в январе 2020 года, однако обновления безопасности выходили все эти три года, а также Microsoft вела программу расширенной платной поддержки Extended Security Updates (ESU), которая теперь прекращена. Кумулятивные наборы обновлений для Windows 7 выпускал энтузиаст Simplix, но уже почти год его проект не работает для жителей России и Беларуси.

Еще один набор обновлений выпускал энтузиаст DrWindows с сайта www.drwindows.de, и последнюю версию этого пакета еще можно скачать в январе 2023 года. В сети появились сообщения, что компания 0Patch будет выпускать платные наборы неофициальных обновлений для Windows 7, которые можно будет купить за $25 в год за одно устройство. Попадут ли эти обновления в наборы от Simplix или DrWindows — пока не известно, но если ответ будет положительный, это позволит пользователям Windows 7 продержаться еще пару лет.

Поддержка браузеров

Еще одна неприятная новость для пользователей Windows 7 и Windows 8.1 — окончание поддержки популярных браузеров в этих ОС. Google Chrome, браузеры на его основе, и Microsoft Edge, прекратят обновляться в старых ОС уже в феврале 2023 года. Позиция разработчиков браузера Mozilla Firefox пока не ясна, но, скорее всего, браузер будет поддерживаться в Windows 7 еще какое-то время.

Обновления браузеров не менее важны, чем обновления безопасности Windows, так как в них закрываются уязвимости и дыры в безопасности, сквозь которые на ПК проникают вирусы, троянские программы и шифровальщики-вымогатели.

Почему окончание поддержки старых Windows — большая проблема?

Многие компьютерные энтузиасты и геймеры давно забыли про Windows 7, пересев на Windows 10 еще в 2015-2016 годах. Но даже в конце 2022 года, по состоянию на декабрь, статистика платформы StatCounter сообщает о доле пользователей Windows 7, составляющей 11.2%, Windows 8 — 0.66%, а Windows 8.1 — 2.6%. То есть, 14.46% всех ПК до сих пор работают под управлениями этих старых ОС, а это каждый седьмой ПК в мире!

Причем доля Windows 7 и Windows 8.1 даже увеличилась с осени 2022 года, когда мы последний раз смотрели статистику ОС в блоге «Пользователи массово уходят с Windows 10 — разбираемся, не пора ли переходить на Windows 11«.

Большинство пользователей Windows 7 и Windows 8.1 пользуются этими ОС не из-за любви к старому софту или боязни нового, а по гораздо более прагматичной причине. Дело в том, что Windows 7 и Windows 8.1 — это последние Windows, которые могут работать на слабых ПК, не превращая работу в мучения для пользователя. В первую очередь это касается запуска ОС с обычного жесткого диска, что полностью разучились делать Windows 10 и Windows 11, превращая работу на HDD в бесконечные тормоза и невозможность нормальной работы остального софта, когда загрузка накопителя держится на 100%.

И у пользователей, особенно в небогатых регионах, до сих пор в строю огромное количество ПК и ноутбуков на базе Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, AMD Athlon и Phenom с двумя и четырьмя ядрами для сокетов AM2+ и AM3, с небольшим количеством оперативной памяти и без SSD. Которые под управлением Windows 7 и Windows 8.1 до сих пор вполне справляются с серфингом интернета, просмотром фильмов, прослушиванием музыки, общением в мессенджерах и простой офисной работой.

На новые ПК у этих пользователей банально нет средств, а установка свежей версии Windows 10, не говоря уже о Windows 11, на такие ПК, превратят их в практически неработоспособные куски железа.

Что делать пользователям Windows 7 и Windows 8.1?

Во-первых, то, что обновлений безопасности больше нет, не означает, что ваш ПК или ноутбук заразится вирусами и троянами уже в феврале 2023 года. Какое-то время еще будет возможно работать и без обновлений безопасности, ведь некоторые пользователи отключают их принципиально и как-то живут. Отсутствие обновлений браузера уже критичнее, но пока можно перейти на браузер Mozilla Firefox, который в некоторых аспектах намного удобнее Google Chrome и Microsoft Edge.

Во-вторых, теперь лучше не полагаться на встроенный антивирус и установить бесплатный, например, Avast, Avira, AVG или Kaspersky Security Cloud Free. Отличные результаты в плане повышения информационной безопасности дает использование брандмауера с настраиваемыми правилами: «все что не разрешено — запрещено». Например, Comodo Firewall или simplewall, которым я пользуюсь уже несколько лет.

В-третьих, можно решиться на небольшой апгрейд — установка SSD-накопителя в старый ПК буквально вдыхает в него новое дыхание и многим из них становится по плечу работа с Windows 10. А подходящую версию Windows 10 можно выбрать, прочитав блог «Какую версию Windows выбрать в 2023 году — рассматриваем пять актуальных вариантов«. Модели SSD объемом 120 ГБ покупать в 2023 году бессмысленно, ведь добавив небольшую сумму, можно взять модель объемом 240-250 ГБ. А такие модели с интерфейсом SATA возможно установить практически в любой старый ноутбук или ПК. В Ситилинке популярны вот такие SATA модели формфактора 2.5» — KINGSPEC P3-256.

Если вариант с апгрейдом не подходит, стоит попробовать Linux, но не распиаренные Linux Mint или Ubuntu, а специальные дистрибутивы для слабых и старых ПК, которых есть множество: Tiny Core,
Puppy Linux, SparkyLinux, antiX Linux, Bodhi Linux, CrunchBang++, LXLE, Linux Lite, Lubuntu, Peppermint. Выбор огромный, и для ПК, на которым только серфят интернет и смотрят видео, переход на Linux обычно проходит без проблем.

Менее чем через месяц, 14 января 2020 года, заканчивается расширенная поддержка Windows 7 SP1 (и Windows Server 2008 R2), соответственно, после этой даты Microsoft не будет выпускать обновления безопасности и исправления для этих ОС. Microsoft предлагает корпоративным заказчикам, которые не успели мигрировать с Windows 7 на новую ОС, приобрести платную подписку для Win 7 по программе Extended Security Update (ESU). В рамках этой программы будут выпускаться и распространятся критические обновления безопасности для снятых с поддержки продуктов. Уведомление об окончании поддержки в Windows 7 Home

Начиная с апреля 2019 года пользователи домашних редакций Windows 7 (Home Premium) стали регулярно получать уведомление о приближающемся окончании поддержки Windows. Уведомление об окончании поддержки Windows 7 выглядело так:

Можно скрыть это уведомление поставив чекбокс “Do not remind me again”. Если нажать на кнопку “Learn more”, вы перейдете на страницу с описанием процесса обновления до Windows 10 (до сих пор есть варианты бесплатного обновления до Windows 10).

Это уведомление стало появляться после установки обновления KB4493132 (это небольшое обновление, размером около 250 кб, распространялось через Windows Update и относилось к категории “Необязательное/Optional”):

Обновление помещает файл sipnotify.exe в каталог C:\Windows\System32\ и ежедневно запускает его через Task Sheduller (taskschd.msc). Для этого в планировщике созданы два задания Notify1 и Notify2 в разделе Microsoft\Windows\End of Support.

С 15 октября аналогичное уведомление об окончании поддержи стало появляться и у владельцев Windows 7 с редакцией Professional. Уведомление начинает появляться после установки обновления KB4524752. Текст сообщения:

Обновление KB4524752 не показывает уведомление End of Support( EoF) на компьютерах с Professional и Enterprise версиями Windows 7, которые включены в домен Active Directory, в Windows Server, на устройствах, работающих в режиме киоска, на компьютерах, на которых ранее отключено уведомление о бесплатном обновлении до Windows 10 через реестр (параметр DisableOSUpgrade=1).

Вы можете скрыть уведомление об окончании поддержки Windows 7, поставив соответствующий чекбокс (при этом изменяется значение параметра DontRemindMe на 0 в ветке реестра HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SipNotify или скрыть обновление в Windows Update (в Панели Управления или через модуль PSWindowsUpdate).

Если обновление KB4524752 уже установлено, вы можете запретить появление уведомления у пользователей через реестр командами:

Полноэкранные уведомления об окончании срока службы Windows 7

В декабре 2019 Microsoft выпустило еще одно обновление для уведомления пользователей о предстоящем окончании поддержки — Windows 7 — December 10, 2019—KB4530734 (Monthly Rollup). Обновление заменяет файл %windir%\system32\EOSNotify.exe. Уведомление сделано более заметным – теперь это полноэкранное всплывающее окно. Данное уведомление будет показываться, начиная с момента окончания поддержки ОС (с 15 января 2020 года).

В окне уведомления указываются риски при продолжении использования Windows 7 после 14 января 2020 года.

Это окно предупреждение появляется при входе, а затем через день в 12 часов дня. Уведомление показывается заданиями с помощью задач планировщика EOSNotify и EOSNotify2 из раздела диспетчера заданий Microsoft\Windows\Setup\.

Вы можете отключить эти задания с помощью команд:

schtasks.exe /change /TN “Microsoft\Windows\Setup\EOSNotify” /Disable
schtasks.exe /change /TN “Microsoft\Windows\Setup\EOSNotify2” /Disable

Или изменив значение параметра DiscontinueEOS (тип DWORD) в ветке реестра HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify на 1. FAQ по программе расширенной поддержки Extended Security Updates для Windows 7

Обновления для Windows 7 и Windows Server 2008 R2 в рамках Extended Security Updates (ESU) доступны для компаний, участвующих в программе корпоративного лицензирования (Volume Licensing), а также через программу Cloud Solution Partner (CSP). Стоимость годовой подписки на обновления безопасности в рамках программка ESU:

• Первый год (январь 2020 – январь 2021) – 25$ за одно устройство Windows 7 Pro и 50$ за Enterprise
• Второй год (2021-2022) — 50$ за Windows 7 Pro, 100$ за Windows 7 Enterprise
• Третий год (2022-2023) — 100$ за Windows 7 Pro, 200$ за Windows 7 Enterprise

После приобретения подписки на программу Extended Security Updates для Windows 7, вы должны в личном кабинете на сайте лицензирования (VLSC) получить MAK ключ для Windows 7 (Licenses -> Relationship Summary -> Licensing ID -> Product Keys).

Количество активаций MAK ключа ESU зависит от количества устройств, подержки которых вы оплатили.

Полученный ESU ключ для Windows 7 нужно установить на клиенте:

slmgr /ipk <MAK ключ ESU >

Проверим статус активации:

Обход подписки Extended Security Updates и полуение обновлений в Windows 7

В Интернете уже появились инструкции, описывающие способ обойти защиту ESU и бесплатно получать обновления безопасности для Windows 7 после января 2020 (https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606/).

По заявлениям автора данный bat файл позволил автоматически получить и установить тестовое обновление ESU (будет ли работать этот способ после января 2020 годе — не понятно).

Можно протестировать получение этого обновления так:

1. Проверить или установить обновления для поддержки SHA2:KB4490628 и KB4474419;
2. Установить последнее обновление стека: KB4531786;
3. Установить BypassESU;
4. Установить тестовое обновление ESU — KB

Для информации: по статистике сайта WinITPro около 22% чиателей все еще используют Windows 7 (Windows 10 – 52%). Так что в ближайшее время рекомендую задуматься о переходе с Windows 7 на Windows 10, тем более уже сейчас нельзя установить Windows 7 на компьютерах с новыми моделями процессоров.

The end is finally here! After over a decade of being the most chosen Windows version, Windows 7 has reached its end of life. While the OS’s Extended Support ended on Jan. 14, 2020, the Extended Security Updates (ESUs) reached their end of life on Jan. 10, 2023.

As we bid farewell to this successor of Windows Vista, and by far one of the most user-friendly OSs, let us take a deep dive into what Windows 7 end of life entails.

Windows 7: Then and now  

Officially released on Oct. 22, 2009, Windows 7 was the 24th addition to the Washington-based tech giant’s OS arsenal. As an immediate successor to Vista, Windows 7 resolved some of the common issues associated with its predecessor, including User Account Control and stability.

In addition to its flashy features, such as a slick, less cluttered taskbar; a renovated system tray; and multi-touch support, the OS also flaunted a minimal list of hardware requirements.

• Processor: 1GHz or faster (32-bit or 64-bit)
• RAM: 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit)
• HDD: 16GB (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit)
• Graphics card: DirectX 9 with Windows Display Driver Model 1.0 and above

Even though Windows 7 was a popular choice among both home and enterprise users, it finally gave way to Windows 10.

The Windows 7 end of life timeline 

While it might seem that Windows 7 has gone through multiple end of life announcements and cycles, here’s a timeline of the entire process:

• Jan. 13, 2015: Microsoft ended Mainstream Support for Windows 7.

• Sept. 6, 2018: Microsoft announced the ESUs for Windows 7. The ESU program is a paid service that provides critical security updates for legacy products for up to three years after Extended Support ends.

• August 2019: Microsoft announced a year of free ESUs, but only for select users, including customers with an Enterprise Agreement or Enterprise Agreement Subscription with active Windows 10 Enterprise E5, Microsoft 365 E5, or Microsoft 365 E5 Security subscriptions. This was limited to only Government E5 stock keeping units.

• Jan. 14, 2020: Microsoft ended Extended Support for Windows 7.

• Jan. 10, 2023: The ESUs reached their end of life on the first Patch Tuesday of 2023.

•  Mainstream Support: This is the first phase of the product life cycle. It includes incident support, security update support, and non-security updates. 

•  Extended Support: This is the support phase that starts after Mainstream Support ends. It includes paid support and free security updates.

What does Windows 7 end of life mean for you as a user?  

The Windows IT Pro Blog stated, «For Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7 Professional for Embedded Systems, the Extended Security Update (ESU) Program will be entering its third and final year of providing security updates beginning on January 12, 2022 and ending on January 10, 2023.» 

Because the ESUs reached their end of life on Jan. 10, 2023, no further security updates will be provided for Windows 7. This means the OS will not receive any further patches and thus can be a target of exploitation if any vulnerabilities are found in it.

Besides security updates, the latest Microsoft 365 apps are no longer supported by the OS. Microsoft has also stated that Edge version 109 is the last version to support Windows 7.

In the absence of regular security patches, Windows 7 is now a haven for threat actors. By exploiting any unpatched vulnerabilities in the software, hackers can potentially exfiltrate sensitive data or deliver ransomware payloads into a system. If that’s not convincing enough, you should know that a total of 2,334 vulnerabilities were reported in Windows 7 from 2012 to Jan. 10, 2023.

The solution? 

It is safe to say that systems that haven’t been upgraded even after Windows 7 end of life await doomsday. The ideal solution is to upgrade to the latest OS versions (i.e., Windows 10 and above) for the systems that meet the requirements.

Upgrading Windows 7 end of life systems to the latest Windows versions is definitely a headache when there are many machines in an enterprise.
