I have a Win32 application that in turn calls a Win16 application to handle a specific task.  Windows 7 balks and says it can’t run a 16 bit application when I attempt to pass it through (I’ve tried compatibility modes for XP, 98 and 95 as well, but those only support the 32 bit versions of those).  I’ve searched online for a 32 or 64 bit replacement to the 16 bit application without success.

  So, I installed the 32-bit DOSBOX, knowing that it can run 16 bit applications.  I cannot alter the code of the 32 bit application to call DOSBOX in place of the 16 bit app, so I moved the 16 bit application, created a shortcut to DOSBOX with a parameter set to the name of that application.exe, set my run directory to the application’s run directory.

  This runs the 16 bit application all fine and dandy, however it does not automatically pass on the parameters that were part of the 32 bit application’s call to the 16 bit application.  DOSBOX is passing back the output properly from the 16 bit application back to the 32 bit.

  here’s my shortcut
«C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe» c:\bioedit\apps\readsq16.exe %CmdCmdLine%

  This passes the literal string %CmdCmdLine% (or %* if I set it to that) to readsq16, not the parameters of the call.  putting either the % stuff in quotes or from before c:\bioedit to the end doesn’t work.  Using escapes before the %s (\%CmdCmdLine\%) passes the literal string minus the escapes.  So…is there a way to call a shortcut with parameters and have the shortcut pass those parameters on?

I assume I can’t create a junction for an .exe file to a .bat file

  In other words, have readseq.exe a symbolic link, pointing at readseq2.bat, which calls
«C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe» c:\bioedit\apps\readsq16.exe %*

  I assume the OS will try interpret the .bat as an .exe and crash the launching app?

Have you tried using the ‘-c’ switch in dosbox to pass the commands? According to the documentation that is how you are going to pass variables to the executed applications. So instead of using «c:\<path to dosbox>\dosbox.exe» «<path to executable>» %CmdCmdTxt% you would use -c<Command> instead of the % for passing the commands to the running application inside the emulator.

  You can find that switch here.

It might look something like this:

 "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -c <drive letter>:readsq16.exe %CmdCmdLine% "MOUNT <drive letter> c:\bioedit\apps\" 

  That might work but I don’t currently have it installed to test. What that should do is mount the directory where your application is located as it’s own drive letter (mount point) and then execute the command prior to the ‘MOUNT’ command as a normal command using dosbox as the emulation interpreter. At least that is what I think it may do. I might have to play around with this sometime and see if I can get one of my older games to emulate properly.

I had not yet used the -c parameter.  I didn’t see much point of running a command before running another command (isn’t that what a batch file is for?)

  -c command

Runs the specified command before running name. Multiple commands can be specified. Each command should start with -c though. A command can be: an Internal Program, a DOS command or an executable on a mounted drive.

name

If name is an executable, DOSBox will mount the directory of name as the C drive, and start executing name.

I’ll certainly give it a shot if I don’t make any headway with -noautoexec -noconsole -exit, running a batch file in DOSBOX, and piping to a text file in-directory (stdout.txt and stderr.txt were created in-directory, but err was blank and out just had run headers if I just wanted DOSBOX to echo «test»).  In other words, if DOSBOX can’t pipe to disk, I’ll have to use other creative measures.  Mount should be taken care of automatically, but if I can’t find the output files anywhere, I’ll certainly use the MOUNT command listed.  If I understand this right though, I think I want the -c part to be MOUNT (so that runs first) and the file to execute (e.g. «name») to be the readsq16 with parameters.

  DOS programs seem to use the opposite of unix parameters.  DOSBox specifies parameters AFTER the «name» field.

  Thanks for all your help as always.  I’ll work on this again tomorrow.  Unfortunately I have another set of things to do with my home computer when I’m home…

DOS was really a half hearted attempt at making a unix like environment that wasn’t ‘unix’ in such a way that AT&T would require a license. There are a lot of things like that in the DOS environment that are almost the same but not quite. For example: Using \ for directory structure instead of the unix /.

Bah.  I may have to abandon ship on this one.  Or use a program that builds a bat into an exe, use that to run doskey, use that to run a bat, to run an exe:P  Then I have no idea where the output of readseq will be (file? stdin? stdout? windows variable? DOS variable?) so I may have to echo the contents of a text file in the exe-built-on-bat

  Summary:
You can’t link across file types and have it run as the actual file’s type — access execution is defined by the extension of the sym link’s name.  So I can’t link to a batch or alter parameters fed to the exe before processing
BioEdit either calls readseq or readseq.exe explicitly and windows doesn’t know that when .exe is missing it should use .exe.lnk

  I may be able to make a bat file with
«C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe» CLS -c «MOUNT q: C:\BioEdit\Apps» -c «q:\bob.bat %*» -exit -noconsole -noautoexec

  then use 7zip as such

to convert that batch file to an exe?  Leave bob.bat as a batch (and have it do the actual relevant commands like calling readsq16.exe).

  Within DOSKey %* and %CmdCmdLine% aren’t recognized, but %1s though %9 are (and if I have more parameters than that, I can use SHIFT).  DOSKey’s DOS environment has basically no variables in SET.  DOSKey also doesn’t have an ability to do a FOR/DO loop in the pseudo «DOS 5.0» environment it creates (to go through all the %n possibilities until a parameter is blank, shifting if need be).
Edit: this was my 420th post on these forums.  I think that’s telling me that this is stressing me out and I need to mellow out.  I don’t do that though:P

7zsd.sfx is a part of the packed executable that it creates.  The webpage that I reference above points to a download at 7zsfx.info, which is not the official 7-zip website.

  McAfee site advisor says «When we tested this site we found links to oszone.net, which we found to be a distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs.»

  another site I found support.clean-mx.de says that it has (had?) a Exploit.JS.Pdfka.cwm virus on the files site and currently has
a Trojan/Win32.Refroso or Artemis (but not in the file I would be downloading?)

  Prepackaged sfx files in the 7zip package just seem to make the program into an installer which extracts the bat file to my directory, rather than run the bat as an exe.

  Soooooo…how safe is the .info site?

i did a virustotal scan on the sfx file and got the following

  I don’t know what a Trojan.Malware.Win32.xPack.g is, but only one AV claims that it’s there and two others come up with «suspicious» my guess is because that’s packed into a lot of exes, virus and otherwise, out there.

  Whatever…compromising my system by installing the file:P

Since DOSBox is basically forcing an emulation it may be having some very limited functionality with the application you are using.

  What application are you trying to force through it so I can see about helping out here locally? Might help me take a look at it.

  Also you can force a compatibility mode using the advanced properties of the shortcut link, just change the properties to force a ‘windows 2000’ session. It’s in the ‘compatibility’ tab on the properties page. Just check mark the emulation and see if it will force the file to run.

  Those .info files are normally packed with a ‘compromised’ piece of software. Anti-virus applications trigger on them even if the application was a legitimate piece of open source or software that is perfectly fine. If you can’t find more than a trigger on that file then I would expect you aren’t infected. Do a thorough scan though in either case using malwarebytes and spybot to ensure it is fine.

I saw that you were trying to run Bioedit. I have a copy of it and will be testing this out in a few moments with a new version of DOSBox that I’ll be downloading. I’ll try to test and see where it may be falling out and let you know. Might take a bit of time but we’ll see what we can get done. I’ll try using some of the examples you placed there.

  Also I noticed that you have them located in your ‘Program Files (x86)’ directory. I will be setting my version of DOSBox on it’s own in the root of my secondary drive as I dislike putting things in that directory if it is not required. Most applications don’t need things to be placed there. Microsoft uses it for a convenience only as you well know. Just trying to eliminate any directory structure beyond the original 8.3 convention.

I’ve made significant progress and wasted even more significant time.  Currently it works (horray!) on the import-from-clipboard function, at least for single sequences (multiple sequences not tested yet) in relatively plain text form, but it leaves the DOSBox windows generated open (which I have to «exit» or x-out) before I can retrieve my input and/or use bioedit again.

  as mentioned in my first longwinded post, compatibility mode only works for 32 (and 64) bit applications, but not for 16 bit applications.  So, basically, I’m using DOSBox as the bridge.  My version of BioEdit is 3 or 4 minor revisions from the most current — but it’d be interesting to test it out for ~version 5 clients, as that’s «popular».

  I’ll definitely share my program with you when all done, as I have a bunch of tools installed that are integrated together, so I have no idea if it’ll work on another computer once my laptop or desktop PC goes out;)

Well with that you should be able to use the ‘-exit’ switch to close the application out after it runs. Should help that all out.

  Ah you are using version 3 or 4 as the one downloaded here is the last version they had running. 7.0.9 is the version number.

I think I have 7.0.5 on my windows 7 laptop (7.0.9 — . .4 = 7.0.5 )
I have 5.0.9 on my home XP PC — which doesn’t need DOSBox as it can handle 16 bit.

  I’m already using the -exit switch.  it ain’t working:P  I think when there’s an error or warning, it must keep the window open.  either that or I’m setting the params in the wrong order or without quotes….I dunno.  I’m currently calling (pseudo code)
dosbox noop.bat -exit -c «mount Q to bioedit apps directory» -c «mount C to C» -c «real.bat» -noautoexec -noconsole. it still does the autoexec, doesn’t exit and complains about my mount C.  but hey, the console goes away…

  I might see if it can handle symlinks in DOSBox dos mode — probably not, but maybe the filesystem handles it below the OS?  In any case, the purpose of that would be to not manually mount a C drive, have it take the path from noop, but then go relative to that to the call to readsq16.  Either that or I’ll just assume that the file call is always the same and hardcode it into my DOSbox call, rather than just passing the parameters from the call to readseq.exe.

  noop.bat is just a blank file to satisfy the «name» condition and «real.bat» is the one that does the work, as I couldn’t figure out how to give parameters to «name» (enclosing in quotes made it think that the parameters were part of the file name, while leaving them off made it lose track of the -cs and other switches).

  I’ll be shooting myself if I could have solved this one with something like ‘alias’ all along.

  In any case, several hours of dealing with this thing that only cost me about 20 seconds of inconvenience (paste my clipboard to a notepad, manually adjust to fasta format, save, import from file).

Yeah there are a lot of the switches that DOSBox is currently ignoring. I’ll add -exit to that list as well as the -noautoexec.

After adding an EXIT to the end of my batch file (executed within DOSBox) and a blank line in that batch file as well as my batch-to-exe, DOSbox will exit after run.

  I don’t have a general solution for all computer setups, but I was counting on mklink in the bioedit apps directory to go to anywhere important:P  So, I might write an «installer» later to set those up (or alternatively, I might say «it works for me» and move on with my life:P ) , but if you’d like to test it, I can e-mail you the files and let you know what needs to be in-directory and what needs to be linked.

I think I’m intrigued enough to follow the logic you have going on this thread here and get a method that works on my system. Thanks for the offering of the files and I’ll send you a PM with the email address you can send it to so that I can at least take a look at the switch order and see if there is anything that can be followed up on. Right now I’m going to be out for the remainder of the day. Seems the sun is finally out enough that the waterfalls would be gorgeous today so I’m going to go see them before the snows show up.

  This technique in general should be extensible (anti-extensible?) to running ANY 16-bit application within a 64-bit (MS Win OS) environment.  I may strip it down for that function at some point.  Or if that’s your intent of what you want to do with it, feel free to go ahead and do so, but cite/reference me for the sake of pride please;)

I got your zip file and I’ll take a look at what you are doing with it. I’m just curious as how you derived your solution and will just take a look to see if it can be consolidated a bit smoother if possible. I don’t plan of making anything of it, I just like to see some solutions at times where it forces an OS to perform functions that weren’t originally intended using packages that are meant for something else. Consider that DOSBox was intended for just running older applications and games in the newer OS releases this will be an interesting thing.
