The Samsung ML 1710 printer offers you more convenience with a media capacity of 250 sheets, so you don’t have to load paper every now and then. This USB laser printer with 1 USB 2.0 port allows you to connect other data devices to it. This Samsung mono printer’s toner saver and paper saver features allow you to replace toner and cartridges frequently.
Like many desktop printers, the advertised output capacity of 50 sheets becomes a bit overloaded after 30 or 40 sheets. You also can’t go past 250 pages without refilling the input drawer, even if you offer Samsung extra money – it doesn’t offer a second drawer or other higher capacity option. We think this is a missed opportunity to take out a key competitor, the PagePro 1250W from Minolta-QMS, which offers a 500-sheet secondary cartridge (but whose primary input is an inkjet-style folding tablet).
Aside from the power button at the rear right, the only control at the top is a button that cancels a job in progress, prints test pages when held down while the printer is idle, or toggles a toner saver mode that Samsung says reduces toner usage and thereby extends life the life of the cartridge by 40 percent.
This feature makes printouts look weak, with gray text instead of black, but readable enough for internal or draft documents – although we suspect you’d get a headache reading them all day.
We’ve already written that 600 dpi laser printing is more than sharp enough for text documents and presentations. In fact, 600 dpi resolution is the default or middle setting of the ML-1750 driver – 300 dpi makes graphical backgrounds or fills look splotchy. While the 1,200 x 600 dpi mode was only slightly worth our slightly slower speed and still at that tended to form streaks in solid colored areas.

If you choose the 1,200 dpi setting, you can click either the Text Enhancement or Image Enhancement checkbox. However, we preferred the former for our 8×10-inch digital camera photos as well as word processing documents. Image Enhancement mode made prints too dark and dull.
