There are many differences between Windows 11/10 Home and Professional, including the Remote Desktop feature. Unlike the professional version, you cannot use the Remote Desktop feature in the home version. In this post, I will share how to use Windows Remote Desktop in Windows 11/10 Home and suggest an alternative for the best experience.
Your Home edition does of Windows doesn’t support Remote Desktop
It is interesting to note that components and services for the RDP server, which makes the remote connection possible, are also available in Windows Home. However, the feature is disabled or blocked on the Home version. That said, this solution is a workaround that comes from the developer binary master in the form of an RDP wrapper library.
Steps to enable Windows 11/10 Home Remote Desktop feature
- Download the latest version of RDP Wrapper library from Github
- Run the installation file. It will allow everything that is needed for the remote desktop.
- Type Remote Desktop in the search, and you should be able to see the RDP software.
- Type in the remote computer name and password to connect with the computer.
Make sure that Remote Desktop Connection is allowed on the computer you want to connect.
I connected my Laptop, which is running the Home version, to my desktop, which is running Windows Pro. It works flawlessly, just like it does on Pro versions.
After installation, if you go to Settings > System > Remote Desktop, it will still say that the remote desktop is not available. However, other computers can connect with the Windows Home PC.
How does RDP wrapper library work
So, how is it working? The RDP wrapper library—the one we just installed—makes communication possible as the necessary services are already available on the computer. If you are wondering why Microsoft didn’t completely remove it, it’s because it is needed for support and also makes third-party services possible.
We know how expensive it is to upgrade Windows Pro from Windows Home. So, you can either use this workaround or choose a third-party application. Also, it may not be legal to use an RDP wrapper as it modifies some configuration files.
Read: How to use new Windows App on Mac, Android, or iOS. It allows the user to connect to a remote desktop or a server from their client computer, so it’s basically a re-labeling of the older Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
Third Party Remote Desktop Apps
If you are not very confident about the above solution, and maybe it doesn’t work for you as expected, choose something else. If you do not want a full-fledged solution, select a remote connection via Skype or something similar.
However, if you want a complete solution, it is best to use solutions like TeamViewer. The app is now available in Windows Store as well and makes it possible to use it.
Can Windows 11 Home use Remote Desktop?
The components and service for the RDP server, which make the remote connection possible, are also available in Windows 11/10 Home. However, the feature is disabled or blocked on the Home version.
How many users can Remote Desktop into Windows 11?
Windows 11/10 Enterprise and Pro allow only one remote session connection. The new SKU can handle as many as 10 simultaneous connections.

If you look closely at Windows 10 Home, you’ll find most of the components required to run the Microsoft RDP Server already installed as part of the operating system. Enabling the remote desktop server normally requires a PC running either the Windows Professional or Enterprise editions. Here’s how you can also enable the RDP server in the Windows 10 Home edition.
Before you set up an RDP server, you should be aware that exposing an RDP server to the internet is incredibly risky. RDP is a common vector for compromising Windows systems. There have been multiple security issues with Windows RDP servers in recent years.
Only install an RDP server if you absolutely need one. Configure a restrictive firewall to keep from being accessible from the internet. Only connect to your RDP server through an encrypted network bridge, e.g. a local VPN.
Windows 10 editions that officially support the RDP Server feature can turn it on from the user interface in the Windows Settings app or the Windows System dialog: Properties: Remote. However, you won’t find these settings in Windows 10 Home or S editions. Instead, you’ll find an error message saying “Your Home edition of Windows 10 doesn’t support Remote Desktop.”
The RDP Wrapper Library (rdpwrap) project hot-wires Windows’ built-in RDP server (the Terminal Service) so you can start it even on Windows 10 Home. It also adds the required rules to the Windows Firewall to allow remote RDP connections to your PC. Make sure all accounts on your PC have strong passwords to protect it against unauthorized remote logins!
RDP Wrapper doesn’t unlock Windows’ user interface for managing the RDP server. Instead, you can use the bundled RDPConf program which comes bundled with RDP Wrapper to manage these settings.
It’s very easy to get set up with RDP Wrapper: just download the latest MSI installer, and run it. It’ll unlock the RDP server, and provide you with a new app to configure it.
Alternative approaches to enable RDP in the Home edition of Windows often make alterations to Windows components that are difficult to revert and may cause problems later when the system updates through Windows Update. RDP Wrapper instead makes some minor adjustments to Windows configuration and uses existing Windows components and services to enable remote RDP access.
You can use the Remote Desktop Connect client to remotely access the desktop of a Windows PC running an RDP server. The Remote Desktop Connection client program is available in all editions of Windows including Windows 10 Home and Mobile. It’s even available on MacOS, iOS, and Android through their respective app stores.
There aren’t any alternative third-party RDP server implementations available on Windows, so you must either use the implementation built-in to Windows or not at all. RDP is a proprietary protocol by Microsoft after all, so this may not be all that strange.
The Windows 10 Professional upgrade cost for a Home edition user is quite expensive, and it may be worth investigating alternatives like VNC. VNC is an open-source alternative remote desktop protocol. You’ll find plenty of free servers and clients available for all operating systems including Windows. VNC suffers from having many almost-but-not-quite compatible implementations, resulting in an ecosystem where not all clients work well or at all with all servers. I’ll not cover VNC any further in this article.
You may be wondering whether the Windows license allows for something like RDP Wrapper to lift limitation in the Home edition? Let’s take a quick look at the relevant parts of the Windows Operating System license:
Section 2.c: “[…] this license doesn’t give you any right to, and you may not:” and Section 2.c(ⅳ): “work around any technical restrictions or limitations in the software;
Section 2.d(ⅴ): “Remote access. No more than once every 90 days, you may designate a single user who physically uses the licensed device as the licensed user. The licensed user may access the licensed device from another device using remote access technologies.
You may argue that RDP Wrapper just enables you to take advantage of the functionality that you’re licensed to utilize by section 2.d(ⅴ), but section 2.c+2.c(ⅳ) contradicts 2.d(ⅴ) with no clear reading as to which one takes precedence. Section 2.d(ⅴ) doesn’t expressly grant an exception from 2.c+2.c(ⅳ), but 2.d(ⅴ) is more specific to the situation at hand.
I’d like to pause here to say the current Windows license text makes it clear that you’re not allowed to work around any problems and limitations imposed by Windows. Which means that you’re more than likely already violating the Windows license simply by installing any number of utility programs that extend or tweaks Windows functionality.
I.e., using the file search utility FileLocator to work around the restrictions Windows puts in place to limit your ability to find files on the system is strictly speaking a violation of the Windows license as written. Most of the third-party and even other Microsoft software you install will put you in violation of the Windows license.
The use of RDP Wrapper may be interpreted as an application of a method for circumventing digital rights management system and thus illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in the USA, and who-really-knows-what-is-illegal-in-different-member-states under the Copyright Directive (2001/29/EC) in the EU. This part of the license is, however, open to interpretation and I’d say Microsoft would be hard-pressed to apply it to any situation beyond attempts at circumventing their copy-protection and validation systems.
Not being able nor permitted to work around bugs and problems in Windows is one of the top reasons why I choose Linux over Windows. I just find it so damned frustrating. On the other hand, I understand that Microsoft wants to prevent Home customers from “needlessly” exposing their devices to external threats.
If you want to stay in compliance with the Windows license, you can either choose to use a free VNC alternative or upgrade your Windows 10 Home license to a Pro edition license by purchasing a digital upgrade code.
Remote Desktop is not available in Windows 10 Home. Features like group policy editor gpedit.msc and Remote Desktop RDP has been dropped by Microsoft in Windows 10 home since it meant for home use.
Now you can only get these features in Versions Pro and Enterprise of Windows 10. It seems like for their luxury offerings Microsoft prefers to reserve a handful of features always. And that’s why features are less in Windows 10 home edition.
On the other hand, Windows 10 Pro has more options but it is also the more expensive choice. For daily users, the Home version just offers ample features.
There are two reasons you may need a Remote Desktop for:
- To control and connect Desktop network computers via your computer.
- Over the network, you can control and connect your computer from other computers, in simple words Remotely Access.
It’s not advisable to update to Windows 10 Pro only to use a particular feature especially because on Windows Store too many remote desktop applications are available already.
No-one, though, might rule out the complexity of a Windows native method. When you go to the Windows Settings app – > System – > Remote Desktop and connect to a remote device, if you use Windows 10 Home Edition the following error message will occur.
On Windows 10 Desktop, Microsoft removed the feature but did not eliminate it completely. As a workaround, without buying an expensive Windows 10 Pro license you can still enjoy the premium feature intended for Windows Premium users in your home edition.
Technically, to make Windows Remote Desktop tool work on your Windows 10 Home PC, you don’t have to be a computer person or geek. Downloading a file and installing it on your Windows 10 Home PC is all the work you have to do.
Below we have mentioned the whole procedure of how you can download and install the Remote Desktop (RDP) in your Windows 10 Home edition.
Step By Step Guide
To be able to remote access your Windows 10 Home computer remotely through the network just simply follow the steps mentioned below.
- The first thing you will need to do is to download the RDP Wrapper Library. For automatic installation the specific filename is RDPWInst-v1.6.2.msi. For manual installation, you can also download the zip file RDPWrap-v1.6.2.zip.
- Extract the .zip archive to a folder and open the folder. Open install.bat and then update.bat ‘as admin’.
- Now, wait for execution in the command prompt.

Important Things to Consider
Before you invite someone to remotely connect with your PC there are a few important things you should consider
- Besides the “Enable Remote Desktop” in System Properties add a tick mark. Go to Run –> systempropertiesremote to open to these settings directly.
- You must confirm that the Windows firewall allows TCP and UDP port 3389 since the RDP server will use it as the default port.
- You will still be in breach with Microsoft Windows EULA means “End User Licensing Agreement” despite the fact that this method is not illegal. That’s why in commercial settings you should avoid it.
- As a safety precaution only allow remote access of your system to those who are bounded by a contractual or legal obligation and the ones whom you trust.
- If you want you can you can use the same username and password which you use to login to your system, but to make it more secure you can use a different password as well.

Difference between Microsoft Remote Desktop Server and Client
Before we move forward, you must understand that Windows has a Remote Desktop Server and a Remote Desktop Client. Remote Desktop Client is still present in the Home edition, which you can open using the mstsc cmdlet. This means you can still connect to other devices from a PC with Windows Home. However, the Remote Desktop Server has been removed, which means other devices cannot connect to your Windows Home computer.
Microsoft disabled the Remote Desktop Server on Windows 11/10 Home but did not remove it entirely. As a workaround, you can still enable the premium feature reserved for Windows Pro users to allow remote connections.
Trust me! You don’t have to be a computer geek to make Windows Remote Desktop tool work on your Windows Home PC. All you need to do is to download a file and install it on your computer.

Enable Remote Desktop on Windows 11 and Windows 10 Home Editions
The following steps will allow remote access to your Windows 11 and Windows 10 Home computer remotely through the network:

While these steps are reasonable for most computer users, many people are not comfortable with the idea of patching their OS to add or remove features. At iTechtics, we suggest going for an inbuilt tool whenever possible over a third-party alternative.
Nevertheless, there are tons of remote desktop applications available for Windows 11 and 10. You can use that application to establish remote connections to and from your PC without any workarounds. These applications also offer mobile and tablet apps. I will start with my personal favorite and the most popular one—TeamViewer.
Third-party apps also reduce the risks involved in enabling the RDP port over the network. The native RDP app from Microsoft is vulnerable to all sorts of security threats, especially when you allow access to your computer over the internet.

Conclusion
The idea of using a pro feature on the Home version of Windows without paying for an upgrade, while a fascinating idea, is a workaround. It might or might not work for you.
If you’re a business that relies on Remote Desktop tool for business processes, the workaround isn’t exactly a cost saver for you. I recommend you upgrade to Windows Pro edition or buy a license to one of the aforementioned tools. For everybody else, I recommend giving this technique, to enable the RDP server on Windows Home, a try before going for an alternative.
That said, a third-party tool known as “RDP Wrapper Library” used to work as an alternative tool to enable RDP on Windows Home edition. However, the tool has not been updated since 2017 and no longer works on either Windows 10, or the Windows 11 operating system. Therefore, it can be concluded that the RDP Wrapper Library has become obsolete.
