Your desktop is the first thing you encounter when you sign in to Windows, and having it organized to your liking can significantly enhance your productivity and overall experience. This article describes how to customize the default desktop icons, add new shortcuts, adjust their size to suit your preferences, and show or hide all icons as needed.

Customize the default desktop icons

By default, Windows includes the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. Essential icons that you can customize include:

This PC: Provides access to the computer’s drives and connected devices
Recycle Bin: Where deleted files are temporarily stored
Network: Allows you to view and connect to network resources
User’s Files: A shortcut to your personal folders

Additional shortcuts can be added to suit individual preferences and enhance productivity.

To customize the default desktop icons:

In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Personalization > Themes or use the following shortcut:

Select Desktop icon settings
Select the icons you would like to have on your desktop, then select OK

Note: The option Allow themes to change desktop icons allows or prevents themes from changing the icons used for common desktop shortcuts such as This PC, User’s Files, Network, and Recycle Bin. By default, themes are allowed to change these icons. However, if you have customized these icons to your preference, you might not want them to be altered whenever you change your theme.

Add shortcuts to your desktop

By placing frequently used applications, files, and folders directly on your desktop, you can access them quickly without navigating through multiple menus or folders. This can save time and reduce the effort needed to perform routine tasks.

To add shortcuts to your desktop, you can use one of these options:

Right-click on an empty area of the desktop
Select New > Shortcut
Follow the prompts to create a shortcut to a specific file, folder, or web page

Select Start and select All to display a list of all installed applications
Scroll through the list to find the app for which you want to create a shortcut
Drag and drop the app you want to create a shortcut for to the desktop

Navigate to the file or folder you want to add
Right-click on the file or folder and select Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)

Open your web browser and navigate to the web page you want to add
Click and drag the padlock icon (next to the URL) to your desktop

Resize the desktop icons

Resizing desktop icons can be useful for improving accessibility and organization. For example, if you have a high-resolution monitor, the default icon size might appear too small, making it difficult to identify and click on the icons. By increasing the icon size, you can make them more visible and easier to interact with. Conversely, if you have many icons on your desktop and want to fit more on the screen without scrolling, reducing the icon size can help you manage your workspace more efficiently.

Tip: You can also use the scroll wheel on your mouse to resize desktop icons. On the desktop, press and hold Ctrl while you scroll the wheel to make icons larger or smaller.

Show or hide all desktop icons

Hiding desktop icons can be useful in various scenarios. For instance, if you’re giving a presentation or sharing your screen during a meeting, hiding desktop icons can help create a cleaner and more professional appearance. It can also be beneficial if you want to focus on a specific task without the distraction of numerous icons cluttering your desktop.

Right-click on an empty area of the desktop
Select View, and then uncheck Show desktop icons. This will temporarily hide all icons, and you can easily show them again by rechecking the same option.

Tip: If you hide your desktop icons and need to access the desktop, you can do so through File Explorer. Simply open File Explorer , and select Desktop in the navigation pane.

This article explains how to change the size of icons on the desktop and File Explorer in Windows 10.

How to Change Desktop Icon Sizes in Windows 10

Your desktop is part of Windows 10 that hosts shortcuts to the Recycle Bin and your favorite apps. These shortcuts are represented by icons that can be made larger or smaller to match your tastes.

On the Windows 10 desktop, right-click anywhere to bring up a menu. Select View.
Select Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons to change the size of the icons on your desktop.

Your current Windows 10 icon size setting has a black dot next to it in the menu.
After selecting an icon size, the icons on the desktop resize automatically. You can repeat this process as many times as you like to get your icons looking the way you want.

How to Change Windows 10 File Icon Sizes

When browsing your Windows 10 device’s folders in the File Explorer or when looking for a file to upload to an app or website such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, or Twitch, it can be helpful to adjust the size of the file icons to make it easier to locate the file you need.

Open File Explorer from the Windows 10 Start Menu.

Depending on your Start Menu settings, the link to File Explorer may appear as a small icon that looks like a folder. You can also type «File Explorer» into the Windows search box to open File Explorer.
Select the View tab on the File Explorer window.
In the Layout section, point to Extra large icons, Large icons, Medium-sized icons, Small icons, List, Details, Tiles and Content. As you do, all the icons preview the selected size so you can see how each option will display.
Select the icon size you want to apply it.

Your icon size preferences are folder-specific in the File Explorer. For example, if you want the Extra large icons option enabled for every folder, you’ll need to change each one manually.

Resize Desktop Icons

If the icons on your desktop are too large or too small, you can quickly resize them into one of the three available sizes.

First, right-click anywhere on your desktop. In the context menu that appears, hover your mouse over «View.» In the sub-menu, you’ll see three sizes to choose from: large, medium, and small. You’ll see a dot next to the current size. Click the size that you want.

If you find that the three available options aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, you can place your cursor anywhere on the desktop, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then scroll your mouse wheel up or down to increase or reduce the size of the desktop icons, respectively. This adjusts the size in smaller increments, letting you get the size closer to what you want.

Resize Taskbar Icons

There’s an option to adjust the size of the Taskbar icons in the Settings menu, but you only have two options: normal and small.

Right-click on an empty space in the Taskbar. Click «Taskbar Settings» at the bottom of the context menu that appears.

Right-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar Settings from the context menu.

The Taskbar Settings window will open. Near the top of the list of options, toggle the slider to the «On» position under the «Use Small Taskbar Buttons» option.

Click the toggle switch under 'Use Small Taskbar Buttons.'

This will reduce the size of the taskbar icons.

To change the icons back to the default size, toggle the slider back to the «Off» position.

Resize File Explorer Icons

File Explorer lets you adjust the icon sizes to extra large, large, medium, or small.

First, open File Explorer. You can use the Windows+E keyboard shortcut, or just click the File Explorer icon on the taskbar.

Next, click the «View» tab.

Click the 'View' button near the top of the window.

In the «Layout» group, choose the icon size that you want. The current setting is highlighted in blue.

Select between icon sizes, or a list view.

If one of these four options doesn’t fit your requirements, place your mouse anywhere in File Explorer, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then scroll your mouse wheel up or down to increase or decrease the icon size, respectively. This will adjust the size of the icons in smaller increments.

Changing icon sizes in Windows 10 is easy, but there’s no need to stop there. You can also change the size of Windows 10 text and even your cursor.

How to change icon size on a Windows 10 computer

First of all, note that changing the icon size of files in a folder changes the size of all the icons in that folder. It doesn’t change the icon sizes in other folders.

1. Use the File Explorer to navigate to the folder you want to change icon sizes in. Using the top toolbar, click «View.»

3. You can change your icon sizes by clicking on the different options. You can hover your mouse over the different options to preview them.

4. Alternatively, you can hold the Ctrl key while scrolling up or down with your mouse to change between these options, even without opening the View menu. Scrolling up will make the icons larger, and down will make them smaller.

The «Details» and «Content» options will sort your files into a single vertical column, while «Tiles,» «List,» and all «Icons» options will sort them into multiple columns.

Для того, чтобы изменить размер значков в проводнике Windows 10 доступны все те же способы, что были описаны для значков рабочего стола. Дополнительно, в меню «Вид» проводника присутствует пункт «Огромные значки» и опции отображения в виде списка, таблицы или плитки (на рабочем столе такие пункты отсутствуют).

При увеличении или уменьшении размеров значков в проводнике есть одна особенность: изменяются размеры только в текущей папке. Если требуется применить те же размеры для всех остальных папок, используйте следующий метод:

После настройки устраивающего вас размера в окне проводника нажмите по пункту меню «Вид», откройте «Параметры» и нажмите «Изменить параметры папок и поиска».

В параметрах папок откройте вкладку «Вид» и нажмите кнопку «Применить к папкам» в разделе «Представление папок» и согласитесь с применением текущих параметров отображения ко всем папкам в проводнике.

После этого во всех папках значки будут отображаться в том же виде, как и в настроенной вами папке (Примечание: срабатывает для простых папок на диске, к системным папкам, к таким как «Загрузки», «Документы», «Изображения» и другие параметры придется применять отдельно).

Как изменить размеры значков на панели задач

К сожалению, возможностей изменения размера значков на панели задач Windows 10 не так много, но всё-таки это возможно.

Если вам требуется уменьшить значки, для этого достаточно нажать правой кнопкой мыши в любом пустом месте панели задач и открыть пункт контекстного меню «Параметры панели задач». В открывшемся окне параметров панели задач включите пункт «Использовать маленькие кнопки панели задач».

С увеличением значков в данном случае сложнее: единственный способ сделать это системными средствами Windows 10 — использовать параметры масштабирования (при этом также будет изменен и масштаб других элементов интерфейса):

Нажмите правой кнопкой мыши в любом свободном месте на рабочем столе и выберите пункт меню «Параметры экрана».
В разделе «Масштаб и разметка» укажите больший масштаб или используйте «Настраиваемое масштабирование» для указания масштаба, отсутствующего в списке.

После изменения масштаба потребуется выйти и снова зайти в систему, чтобы изменения вступили в силу, результат может выглядеть примерно как на скриншоте ниже.

Большие значки на панели задач Windows 10

При изменении размеров значков на рабочем столе и в проводнике Windows 10 описываемыми способами, подписи к ним остаются прежнего размера, а горизонтальные и вертикальные интервалы задаются системой. Но при желании это можно изменить.

Первый из способов: зайти в Параметры — Специальные возможности и в разделе «Дисплей» изменить размер шрифта для системных элементов Windows 10, включая подписи к значкам.

Второй вариант — использовать бесплатную утилиту Winaero Tweaker, в которой в разделе Advanced Appearance Setup (дополнительные настройки оформления) присутствует пункт Icons, позволяющий настроить:
