Nikon Electronic Format, a RAW file format containing digital photos taken by a Nikon camera. This format has detailed images as captured by the camera’s sensors, with no compression or loss of quality.

The NEF file format stores images’ metadata, such as the model of the camera itself, settings, lens information, and other details.

The main advantage of writing images in NEF file format to the memory card compared to the TIFF or JPEG format is that no post-processing is permanent.

Stuff like the hue, tone, sharpness, or white balance is applied, but these are retained as instruction sets that come with the NEF file and can be changed as many times as you want without affecting data.

Another advantage is that depending on the camera you’re using, the NEF file retains 12-bit or 14-bit data, translating to an image with a greater tonal range than an 8-bit JPEG or TIFF file.

With Nikon’s Capture NX2 software or other imaging programs, the after-capture processing of NEF files gives you greater control over the final image than when JPEG or TIFF files are processed.

You can then save them as TIFF, JPEG, or as NEF again. Provided the original NEF file is preserved, the digital negative remains untouched, and processing doesn’t change the original instruction set.

It is exclusive to Nikon cameras, and sometimes it is referred to as digital negatives and is written to the camera’s memory card in either uncompressed or lossless compressed format.

How do I process NEF files on my camera?

Here are the steps you can take to process the NEF files in your Nikon DSLR camera prior to opening the file:

1. In the Retouch menu, find NEF in-camera processing feature.
   • This lets you process NEF RAW files into JPGs within the camera, and is useful for shooting RAW files or sharing a quick JPG
2. Adjust Picture Controls or change images from color options like Black & White (B&W) or Sepia, change white balance, exposure compensation and so much more.
3. Once you’re done with and satisfied with the adjustments, preview it by pushing the magnifying glass button on the back of the camera.
4. Select EXE when you’re ready to save the JPG file to your media or memory card.
5. The original NEF file will be saved on the memory or media card so you can revert to the original capture when opening the NEF file on your computer.

If you have the right codec on your PC, you can open or view NEF files without needing more software. For Windows 10, you don’t need to install the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack.

The codecs are built-in to the operating system, but you would have to download a codec if you want to add support for DNG formats or others not supported.

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack enables viewing various device-specific file formats in Windows Live Photo Gallery and other software-based Windows Imaging Codecs (WIC).

Installing it will allow supported RAW camera files to be opened or viewable in File Explorer and is available in 32-bit or 64-bit versions.

What Is an NEF File?

An NEF file is a Nikon raw image file. It is an abbreviation for Nikon Electronic Format, and is used solely on Nikon cameras.

Like other raw image files, NEF files retain everything captured by the camera before any processing is undergone, including the metadata like the camera and lens model.

The NEF file format is based on TIFF.

How to Open an NEF File

Photos in Windows and Preview in macOS should be able to display NEF files. If your computer’s default photo viewer doesn’t open the file, give Nikon’s NX Studio software a try. Other popular photo and graphics tools should work as well, like Able RAWer, Adobe Photoshop, IrfanView, GIMP, and AfterShot Pro.

To open an NEF file online so you don’t have to download any of those programs, try Pics.io. Mobile devices can open NEF files as well. Google Snapseed and Photosop Express are two examples that can view NEF files on Android and iOS.

How to Convert an NEF File

An NEF file can be converted to a number of formats using either a free file converter or by opening the file in an image viewer/editor and saving it to a different format.

For example, if you’re using Photoshop, you can save the open file back to your computer in formats like JPG, RAW, PXR, PNG, TIF/TIFF, GIF, PSD, etc.

IrfanView converts NEF to similar formats, including PCX, TGA, PXM, PPM, PGM, PBM, JP2, and DCX.

Adobe’s DNG Converter is a free RAW converter for Windows and macOS that supports conversions like NEF to DNG.

Yet another option is to convert the NEF file with Filestar, a desktop file converter that supports dozens of export formats for NEF files.

One of the above tools should be enough, but you can use a free online NEF converter if you want another method. In addition to Pics.io is Zamzar, which converts NEF to BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PDF, TGA, and other similar formats.

Still Can’t Open Your File?

The NEF file extension most likely means that you’re dealing with a Nikon image file, but you must be careful when reading the extension to ensure that you’re actually dealing with a Nikon file.

Some files use an extension spelled a lot like «.NEF» but really has nothing to do with the format. If you have one of those files, there’s a really good chance that none of the NEF openers above will work to open or edit the file.

For example, an NEX file might be easily confused for an NEF file but it’s not related to an image format at all but is instead a Navigator file used by web browsers as an add-on file.

It’s a similar case with NET, NES, NEU, and NEXE files. If you have any file other than an NEF file, research the file extension (on Google or here on Lifewire) to learn what applications support opening that specific file or converting it to a different format.

Due to how images are written to a Nikon’s memory card, no processing is done to the NEF file itself. Instead, changes made to an NEF file alter a set of instructions, meaning any number of edits to the NEF file can be made without ever negatively affecting the image.

Simply go to File>Open or click on Load to browse and open NEF file from your computer to view it. Click on View option to preview an enlarged copy of the picture.
