Program files common files windows live

When you download Windows Live Essentials from its official website, you will get a web installer file, and this installer will download and install the individual components based on your choice. You may wonder if there is an installer for each individual component in Windows Live Essentials? If yes, then where are they saved in your computer?

After you install Windows Live Essentials on you computer, you can find the downloaded installers in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows Live\.cache, there are several folders with GUID names under .cache folder, and each folder contains an installer for a specific Windows Live component.

NOTE: .cache folder is a protected folder, by default, it is hidden. So you will first need to uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” option in Folder View options. To do so in Windows 7:

1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing Windows key + E

2. Click the Organize drop down on the top of window then choose Folder and search options

3. Click View tab, in Advanced settings, uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

4. Click OK to exit

Now you should be able to find .cache folder and all the MSI installers for Windows Live Essentials.

Most technicians bring along various program installers (such as the latest antivirus update, iTunes & Winamp etc.) on a USB drive to their clients houses because the client may not have internet access, it is very slow, or the program installer is very large.

MSN/Live Messenger used to be one of those installers that I frequently brought along to clients houses. However, ever since Microsoft started pushing their other “Live” products, they no longer offered a stand-alone, offline installer for Windows Live Messenger. I hated having to re-download it every time I wanted to install Live Messenger, so I found an easy way to get the stand alone offine installer. Heres how I did it.

Note: Microsoft has since released the stand alone installer on their website, so this article is now reduntant. You can download the installer here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/a/4/1a4feb1a-18e0-423a-b898-f697402e4f7f/Install_Messenger.exe

Accept the agreement and uncheck the “MSN Home” and the “Help improve Windows Live” checkboxes. Then, click the “Install” button.

Select “Messenger” and click the “Add to Installation” button. Windows Live will now download and install Live Messenger.

Once it finishes downloading and installing. Goto Start > Run and type:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

You should see something like this. The numbers in the file name may be different on yours:

MSN Live Messenger Stand Alone Installer

You might see a few files in this folder with similar names like Install_{random letters and numbers}.msi

Look for the one that is around 16mb in size. You can check the file by right clicking on it, selecting “Properties” and going to the Summary Tab. You should see something like this:

MSN Live Messenger Stand Alone Installer

The Windows Live installer downloads Live Messenger to this location, installs it from here, and never deletes it. Just rename the file to something descriptive like “Live-Messenger-Standalone-Installer.msi” and copy it to your USB drive. Now, the stupid “Windows Live” downloader is no longer needed.

Microsoft no longer provides stand-alone installers for Windows Live for direct download. You have to download it and other Live products through Windows Live Installer. Once Windows Live Installer has finished downloading and installing its software, you can find & save Windows Live software installation setups.

In Windows Vista, browse to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

Here you will be able to see the WLM and other Live product installers too.

This is the location for the Live installation, and you will find all those you have installed.

The names may appear as follows:

Windows Live Sign-In Assistant
Install_{AFA4E5FD-ED70-4D92-99D0-162FD56DC986}.msi

Windows Live Mail
Install_{EDB619FD-4E71-403C-8E99-DFC9CF9DD345}.msi

Windows Live Messenger

You may have to uncheck ‘Hide protected OS files’ from Folder Options, to be able to see this folder.

However, in Windows 7 they are stored in separate folders.

Once Windows Live Installer has finished downloading and installing Messenger, browse to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows Live\.cache

assuming your Windows 7 has been installed on C drive.

If you install Microsoft Windows Live on your computer system you download a single setup file which will download all the applications from a Microsoft server. This is bad news for users with multiple computers because it would mean to download the setup files multiple times from the Internet. It could also be impossible if the computer was not designed to have Internet access.

There is however on solution available where you only need to download the setup files once and can use them again on additional computers. You start by downloading the Microsoft Windows Live setup files from the official Windows Live website. Microsoft is actually providing the download tool for Microsoft Windows Live in two different versions. The file wlsetup-web.exe is the online installer with a size of only 1 Megabyte. This installer can be used to download only selected Windows Live applications like Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Messenger or Windows Mail.

The other setup file wlsetup-all.exe has a size of 134 Megabytes and contains all programs that can be installed. The download can take a while depending on the Internet connection though.

The full installer with the name wlsetup-all.exe from the Microsoft Windows Live website can be used for offline installations. All that needs to be done is to move the file to the other computer systems. This can be done with a network transfer, removable devices or burning it on a DVD.

If you have downloaded the other installer with the name wlsetup-web.exe instead you can do the following. Start the installer and pick the Microsoft Windows Live applications that you want to install. Those will be downloaded afterwards to the computer.

The files that are used for the installation will be stored in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows Live\.cache directory. The installers will be located in hex encoded directories. Only one file per directory and they use names like writer.msi or messenger.msi which should make it easy to identify them.

Just copy those files over to the other computer and run the installers there. The Microsoft Windows Live applications will then be installed on the other computer without additional downloads from the Internet.
