It came to our attention that in mid December Avid announced the end of Pro Tools First, their free version of Pro Tools. What does this mean for Pro Tools users and will it be replaced?

Avid doesn’t always update Pro Tools First when they release a Pro Tools update. However, after the dust has settled following the release on Pro Tools 2020.9 for Vanilla and Ultimate users, it transpires that Avid has also released Pro Tools First 2020.9 which adds macOS Catalina and Ableton Link support to the free version of Avid’s DAW software.

Avid has recently emailed all their customers who have free Avid Cloud Storage Accounts, advising them that soon they plan to clear down older Pro Tools Projects from user’s free cloud storage accounts. Avid have chosen to email all their users to advise everyone of the release of Pro Tools 2019.6, which resolves an issue where interruptions in internet connectivity can cause Pro Tools First, Pro Tools, and Pro Tools Ultimate to delete local (offline) Projects. 2019.6 does also bring a couple of new features including making Heat available to more Pro Tools users, and Avid have squashed a number of bugs with 2019.6.

This is bringing a feature that Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate users already have to Pro Tools First users. Until now Pro Tools First users could only have a maximum of 3 Pro Tools projects that were stored in the cloud. With this new Unlimited Projects feature, you can now create and save as many projects as you want locally on your computer. Then you can use any 3 of these local projects to sync to the cloud for anytime, anywhere access and collaboration. 

If you are creative working in the music production sector then you should at least know how Pro Tools works. Even if you use another DAW, it makes sense to have a working knowledge of Pro Tools and the good news is that you can with Pro Tools First — the free version of Pro Tools from Avid.

The recent 12.8 update for Pro Tools | First added some new features to this free version of Pro Tools.
