Starting today, you can download an improved version of the Windows Phone App for Desktop, a free program that syncs music, photos, and other media between your phone and Windows PC. Part of the suite of sync apps for Windows Phone 8, the Desktop App can be particularly useful for managing music in iTunes.
Preview versions of the app have been available since October, but today’s release includes some handy new features:
- Expanded podcast support. Support for iTunes podcasts has been a useful feature in the preview versions of the app, but many people get their podcasts from other sources. Now, as long as your podcasts are saved in a folder, you can automatically sync them to your phone.
- Simplified updates. Previous versions of the app required you to install updates from windowsphone.com. Now the app tells you when improvements are available, so you install them with a click.
- Flexible library selection. To provide more flexibility, the app can now sync files from any library or folder on your computer, even if they’re on an external hard drive.
- Many bug fixes. We’ve rolled up your feedback on the preview versions and made fixes to improve performance.
As I hinted, there are several options for moving files to your phone. If you’re new to Windows Phone 8 and need some help figuring out the best sync strategy, our online wizard can help point you in the right direction.

Windows Phone App For Desktop — Synchronize Your Windows Phone To Your Computer
Windows Phone application for the desktop enables you to sync your favorite media files from your Windows Phone to your computer. If you’ve added your media files to your Windows library, it’ll appear in this application under the «PC» folder. When you use Windows Live tile, you can also access your Windows Phone home screen and this is where you can access your Windows Phone desktop application through the same tile.
You can also sync your Windows Media Player files to your Windows Phone for a quick and easy way of enjoying music and videos on your Windows Phone device. To do so, first set up your Windows Live tile in your Windows Phone device, then tap «select other devices». Then, go to your Windows Phone home screen and tap «media files» and choose the folder where you saved your files. You can also select the folders of your music and video folders in your Windows Live tile. Now, you can enjoy your music and videos on your Windows Phone using these same media files that you have on your Windows Phone device.
The Windows Phone app for desktop enables you to access your Windows Live tile, and your Windows Live folder from your computer and vice versa. You can easily move your files from your Windows Phone device to your Windows PC and vice versa. This will allow you to access your files wherever you are you don’t have to carry your device with you all the time.

To use Viber on your Windows PC you will first need install Viber on your mobile phone (Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Phone apps available). Next install the Windows desktop client on your PC and sign in to syncrhonize your contacts across the 2 devices. Then you’re done, call and chat to your heart’s content at no cost.
If you want to call other none VoIP users (landlines and mobile phones directly) you can using the Viber Out feature. These calls are not free, but do come at very competitive rates. You can use Viber Out by adding credit to your Viber account. Call quality is generally excellent, unless you are in an area with a poor internet connection.
